The Entire Postmodern Left Is Chinese
Protest in China over “zero COVID” policy, Nov. 27, 2022 (DW News/YouTube)

I see the Left somewhat shocked by the images of protests coming from China. In the past, many communists were cured of their moral sickness by visiting (and suffering) the Asian giant and crossed over to the right wing. The images we’re seeing these days should provoke a similar reaction on the postmodern Left. It won’t happen. What Chinese communists are doing is the same thing that European social democrats and American progressives would do if they had the power to pull it off. The only difference is that while in Beijing the police beat you up in the street, here the political police cancel you, defame you, put you out of work, fine you, and call you out on social networks to see if there is any luck and you just give up, or at least to see if some crazy tweeter scares you into silence.

The West is quietly returning to communism because the entire Left is heading there. It is a stealthy creeping advance that many conservatives and almost all leftists refuse to see. The reactions to the pandemic crisis were an eye-opener about how leftists resolve conflicts: When they have a real problem, they revert to communism; they revert to the state lording over the souls of its subjects. Their whole climate policy is an immense and typically communist plan for social control.

Maybe it was stupid to label their ideology “woke.” It’s a stupidity that I also commit on a daily basis. With that kind-sounding label we avoid calling things by their name. The Western Left is engaged in a totalitarian maneuver that is a carbon copy of the one that followed the communist revolutions in the 20th century. The methods are changing, but only because explicit violence ends up provoking a victorious counterrevolution. That is why it is easier to enact the revolution with modern weapons: in particular, attacking people’s public image and destroying social prestige, which is man’s greatest asset in the digital age.

The Left has no right to be outraged that the CCP is repressing demonstrations in China in such a savage manner. It is the same Left that wants to impose a single way of living, thinking, behaving, speaking, and voting.

This attack can occur against individuals, like when progressive hordes on social networks rush to cancel and denounce a well-known personality on television. It can also occur collectively: When Joe Biden assures us that we must choose between the Republican Party and democracy, he is implicitly denying the rightful citizenship of anyone who does not vote for him. That is, at the very least, half the country, and that’s not even counting his party’s ballot-box rigging. Twentieth-century totalitarianism was not complete totalitarianism. Even in European dictatorships some businessmen could make free decisions about the future of their companies, as long as they did not get involved in the regime’s political affairs. That is not the case today. The great advance of leftist totalitarianism in the 21st century is to have finally managed to infiltrate big corporations. In the 20th century, revolutionaries were content with infiltrating newspapers; the new revolutionaries need to control hamburger manufacturers, energy companies, and all digital companies. If for a second they lose control, even partially, of any of them, they go crazy and start an all-out war in all directions. Just ask Elon Musk.

So yes, the images coming out of China are appalling. Xi Jinping is a murderer, a despicable being, a guy for whom life, with the exception of his own, is worth nothing. We should not be on any terms with China while it does not show even the slightest commitment to freedom and human rights. But, nevertheless, the Left has no right to be outraged that the Chinese Communist Party is repressing demonstrations in China in such a savage manner. It is the same Left that wants to impose a single way of living, thinking, behaving, speaking, and voting. That is what the CCP is devoted to.

Even conservatives who are the least sympathetic to the libertarian cosmos are fine with people thinking whatever they want as long as they stay within the law and bear the worst burden, which is their own conscience. The postmodern Left does not acknowledge individual conscience, preferring to impose a collective one. An example: Today’s Left has become so absurd and insane that it no longer even promotes sexual liberation but instead encourages strange obligatory rituals that, as the very name indicates, do not liberate but condemn. Even the bloodiest revolutions had something romantic and amusing about them. The most exciting and entertaining thing that today’s revolutionary Left proposes is that we take a knee at the beginning of any sporting event.

Every day I find myself chasing the same thought around my head: We should reflect upon the possibility that, if the virus came out of communist China and infected the world, maybe Providence is trying to tell us something.
