Open Letter to Rob Manfred, Commissioner of Baseball

Rob:

I know you already understand this. But maybe Marvin Hudson doesn’t. And reminders, even of the obvious, never hurt.

People who like baseball, the folks on whom the future of your game and your job depend, shell out handsomely to go to the ballpark, or tune in on television, to watch gifted athletes like, to pick someone at random, Bryce Harper, perform. They don’t go to the park or tune in to watch guys like Marvin Hudson call balls and strikes (even when they get it right most of the time). And they sure as hell don’t go there to watch Marvelous Marv pitch Harper for some, please excuse the technical language, chickens**t infraction.

Next time you see Marv, please ask him for me that the next time he puts on the mask to (1) take 10 deep breaths, (2) don’t take your personal troubles to the ballpark, and (3) get your reflux medicine prescription filled. And, oh yeah, when you miss a call, as you so obviously did on that first pitch to Harper, expect a little justified chirping. Tune it out, and go on with the ball game. The ball game that includes the players the fans came to see.

If there was any delay in Wednesday night’s game it was caused by Marvin Hudson, not by Bryce Harper or Matt Williams. If anyone should have been pitched from the game it was Hudson. Umpiring is not a good career choice for the overly-sensitive. I’m not sure about crying, but there are no trigger-warnings in baseball. Those who can’t call ’em fast and walk away tough should turn in the mask and the chest protector.

There are obviously lines players cannot cross with umpires. But neither Williams nor Harper crossed the line Wednesday. Hudson clearly lost it, as did the folks who came to see Bryce Harper play. I hope Hudson understands this today.

Cordially,
