As Jordan Gonzalez noted earlier, New Hampshire Senator Kelly Ayotte announced her support for the Gang of Eight’s immigration reform/amnesty bill yesterday.
Ayotte has been taken to task by some conservatives given her previous position against amnesty when she ran in the 2010 NH GOP primary.
I believe Ayotte’s change of heart may have been as a result of gun control.
A couple of months ago, Ayotte voted against the Toomey-Manchin gun control bill which would have required expanded background checks on gun purchases. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s PAC Mayors Against Illegal Guns launched an ad against Ayotte for her vote as did former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords’ group, Americans for Responsible Solutions. The ads helped her popularity plunge in the Granite State.
Enter Reclaim America, a PAC which launched ads in defense of Ayotte’s record on firearms and public safety. Reclaim America is headed up by none other than Senator Marco Rubio. This would be the same Rubio who is co-sponsoring the aforementioned immigration reform/amnesty bill.
I cannot help but wonder if Ayotte would be singing the praises of the immigration reform/amnesty bill if not for a little help from her new friend Mr. Rubio.
