Maggie Nails It Again

In his fine piece on Margaret Thatcher’s religious faith this morning (Margaret Thatcher the Methodist), Mark Tooley quotes the Iron Lady getting to the crux of things:

“So when you’ve relieved poverty and ignorance and disease, if you are not a Christian you think that sorts out the problems of the world,” she explained to the Catholic Herald. “You and I know it doesn’t, because there is still the real religious problem in the choice between good and evil.”

Exactly so. This is what leftists of all stripes, including the bureaucrats and pseudo-intellectuals who now run the Methodist Church (and the rest of the mainline Protestant denominations), will never understand.

This reminds me of an insightful non-fiction piece by my favorite novelist, Walker Percy, who wrote of “the man Kierkegaard described who read Hegel, understood himself and the universe perfectly by noon, but then had the problem of living out the rest of the day.”

Yes, materialists have always had, excuse the expression, a devil of a time deciding what to do with the rest of the day. And they always will, as they have absolutely nothing to guide them. Nothing. Or, as the older barman in Hemingway’s famous story would have put it, nada. “Our nada, who art in nada, Nada be thy name……” High GDP and full employment, if these ever happen again, can never fill this kind of vacuum. Maggie understood this, as she did so many things. God bless her soul, which, I have complete faith, will never go wobbly.
