Remember This During the Next Pledge Drive

The Very Rev. Bill Moyers, First Archbishop and Very Exalted Poobah of the First Primitive Church of Left Geekery, is at it again. From his taxpayer-subsidized perch on the PBS program “Moyers & Company” last week, Moyers, never more comfortable than when dissing America, said the American pledge of allegiance is “a lie – a whopper of a lie.”

Moyers, who began his public career helping to make the world safe for that paragon of truthfulness, Lyndon Baines Johnson, and therefore pretty savvy about being economical with the truth, elaborated on the pledge: “We coax it from the mouths of babes for the same reason our politicians wear those flag pins in their lapels – it makes the hypocrisy go down easier, the way aspirin helps a headache go away.”

Well, a guy who devoted himself to the advancement of LBJ’s career, and then goes on to preach about honesty certainly should know his hypocrisy. And I have to point out that the main difference between headaches and Bill Moyers is that headaches, even the worst of them, eventually go away. In the case of Moyers, who has been at the public trough since Cadillacs had tail fins, there appears to be no chance of this.

It’s not altogether clear why Moyers considers the pledge a lie – just as most of what he says eludes coherence. It has something to do with “justice for all” being sequestered away by the likes of Paul Ryan and his evil ilk and by the “Fix the Debt gang of plutocratic CEOs who, with a wink-wink from our president, claim, ‘Oh, we can’t afford that!’” (No mention of the well-heeled PBS CEOs who have kept Moyers on the air and in the top tax bracket for a fair fraction of human history).

This little vignette is proof, if further proof were needed, that though PBS is called “public” broadcasting, it takes the best care of the far-left corner of the public. Don’t expect to see a clip of the Rev. Moyer’s latest catechism during the next PBS pledge drive.
