The top of page 1A headline in this morning’s “Tampa Tribune” shouts, “Court Tackles Marriage.”
Well now that doesn’t exactly describe yesterday’s court proceedings, does it? If one must deal with these matters in football language, the real question is whether the Supremes will block for marriage, or will they sack an institution that, while less than perfect (as is everything this side of the grave), has served us well, as is, for centuries.
If the Supremes ferret out a hitherto unknown penumbra that guarantees Bill the right to marry Steve, and Jane the right to marry Sally, thereby satisfying a noisy minority for the moment, will the “Trib.” headline read, “Court Throws Marriage for a Loss”? Don’t count on it.
