This morning’s news and commentary yielded the usual score or more of lefty commentators declaring that if the Republican Party is to have a future it must “reach out.” They mean, of course, to minorities, single women, gays, NPR regulars, and other wholly-owned subsidiaries of the Democratic Party.
It’s heart-warming to know how much these lefty commentators are concerned about the future of Republicans. (Hell, I am one and I’m not sure the party deserves to stay around.) But there’s considerable confusion about what “reach out” means exactly in this context.
So as a public service I consulted the “Patriotic Americanos’ Political Dictionary For the Alert and Focused,” where I learned that “reach out,” when applied to Republicans, means be more like Democrats.
When applied to Democrats, “reach out” means…. Hmm. Hang on. Be back in a second. Hah! Just as I thought. “Reach out” is never applied to Democrats.
I don’t wish to compete with lefty commentators in the matter of concern for the future of the Republican Party. But from where I sit, it appears that Republican party pooh-bahs would be better directed toward spending a little time reaching out to the party’s conservative base, while there still is one.
