The Thuggishness of The Trump Campaign UPDATE
by

When you consider the months of boorish behavior from Donald Trump, can one really be surprised when that behavior rubs off on his staff?

How else does one explain Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski assaulting Breitbart.com reporter Michelle Fields following his press conference on Tuesday night? The incident has been captured on audio.

How else does one explain the efforts of the Trump campaign to defame Fields’ character and reputation rather than discipline Lewandowski?

If Trump can pull off stunts without consequence, his staff figures they can do the same.

Dislike the media to your heart’s content. But there’s just no excuse for what happened. Fields is not only with a media outlet sympathetic to Trump, she was hardly doing anything out of the ordinary. I fail to see how posing a question to Trump about affirmative action warrants being physically accosted never mind engaging in defamation.

Lewandowski has to go. If he doesn’t it will only embolden him and Trump’s staff to behave in a more thuggish manner in the future. In which case, it is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured or even killed for asking a question, taking a picture or otherwise exercising one’s 1st Amendment rights or just plain being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I hope Jake Tapper asks Trump about this incident during tonight’s debate because he can put a stop to this nonsense if he wants especially if he plans to come off as presidential. But given that Trump set the tone for Lewandowski’s behavior in the first place, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Thugs tend to gather in bunches.

UPDATE: The incident was not brought up in the debate although other incidences of violence at Trump rallies were. Following the debate. CNN’s Dylan Byers asked Trump about it and he said Fields made the whole thing up.

Donald Trump is a jerk of the first order.

Well, since Trump not only refuses to acknowledge the incident, but is claiming Fields lied about this leaves Field with one option – pursue criminal charges against Lewandowski. It would be nice to see Lewandowski led out of Carson’s endorsement of Trump in handcuffs.

UPDATE II: Fields has now filed a complaint with police in Jupiter, Florida against Lewandowski. The Trump campaign left her with no other recourse.

I hope the Trump campaign realizes this episode would have been a footnote had they done the right thing, apologized to Fields and disciplined Lewandowski. But that would have involved admitting wrongdoing & behaving in a civilized manner. As with the truth, Trump and his campaign have a tenuous relationship with civility.
