Federal spending seems more outrageous when it hits close to home, and now smart phone users are able to monitor government waste instantly with the  “Open the Books” mobile phone application.

The free app allows citizens to “see the massive money flows from Washington, D.C. into every zip code.” The application “hyper-localizes” the fed’s checkbook spending, including contracts, loans, grants, direct payments, insurance payments, farm subsidies, and five years of federal salaries.

According to non-profit group, For the Good of Illinois, Inc., “Open the Books” is a transparency project to hold elected officials accountable and is “the only application to aggregate across the entire continuum of federal spending, 2000-2011.”

“Open the Books” founder Adam Andrzejewski said, “Until this point, we’ve had to vent blindly–now we have detailed, specific information on the unique transactions of federal spending.”

This may be the smartest thing smart phones have produced yet.
