Shooter Rampages in DC Navy Yard

by

A man armed with an assault rifle opened fire today at approximately 8:20 this morning, injuring at least four people on the street outside of Naval Sea Systems Command, on the grounds of the Washington Navy Yard in Southeast Washington D.C. Initial reports suggested that the shooting occured within the Sea Systems Command building, where 3,000 people work, but current developments reveal that the shooting likely occured outside. One victim, male, was shot in the head and received emergency CPR from passersby before being taken to the hospital.

Authorities say that there is one gunman, who is labeled an active shooter. D.C. and Capital police are on the scene, along with ATF agents and helicopter patrols. The area is closed, with heavy traffic disruptions.

UPDATE: From DCist:

The Navy said in a release that there was one confirmed injury. MPD later confirmed that five people, including an officer, were shot. The officer was shot in the legs, according to the Fire and EMS scanner.

MPD described the suspect as a black male wearing a black shirt and black hat between 5’10 and 6’0 and 170 pounds. Police say the shooter has barricaded himself in the building, but is still active.

Mayor Vince Gray urged people to stay away from the scene.

More to come.
