Miss Teen Delaware

This is how we live now?

Now for a sad story of our times.

A few days ago, I opened my AOL to read a story that has me reeling. I have since learned more about it and this has me reeling, too.

Very recently, a staggeringly beautiful young woman of about age 18 entered the Miss Teen Delaware contest. I know Delaware well, but I do not know where this woman, named Melissa King, is from in that small state.

By virtue of her beauty and charm, Miss King became Miss Teen Delaware. Soon thereafter, the news came out that at some point after winning some teen pageants and turning 18, but apparently before she became Miss Teen Delaware, this poor confused child had answered an ad or some other kind of solicitation, direct or indirect, to do a porn video.

As far as I can tell, and I am not an expert in the porn world, the porn website to which she responded specializes in very young looking — but over 18 — young women (girls) having extremely explicit sex on camera, which then goes out over the Internet and is there for eternity.

For this “work,” this sad child was paid $1500, I have I learned, also on the Internet.

The porn site noticed that Miss King had won Miss Teen Delaware and plastered the video over the Internet. Miss King lost her crown and was humiliated. She has recently been offered $250,000 to be the spokeswoman for a porn site. No word on whether she will do it. I am guessing not, but I could be wrong.

What a stunning commentary on today’s lifestyles. This girl was apparently a good student, a cheerleader, an ace gymnast, had won academic awards. Yet she somehow thought it was a good idea to do a porn video and when asked why, answered, “I thought it might be fun and I need the money.”

What a sick, twisted world we live in where a young child, barely of legal age, would think that doing a porn video would be “fun” and a good way to make money. What on earth goes through a young woman’s mind that she thinks of doing this kind of thing? In prosperous, wealthy America? I can imagine it in some sad, poverty stricken country in a faraway continent. But in Delaware? Right next to Maryland, where I so enjoy my crabcakes, where I grew up?

What horrible men would even enter a business that entices teenagers to do porn acts with strangers on camera to make money for themselves? I guess people will do anything for money. But for them to wreck this girl’s life when she had just won a major beauty contest and was having her moment of glory? How could anyone have been so mean-spirited?

Don’t get me wrong. I love beautiful women and the female figure at its best is, as my late father in law, Col Dale Denman, Jr. used to say, “the form divine.” And I do not in any sense claim to be a model citizen where any human weakness is involved. Far from it.

But to just throw this girl’s life into a trash compactor for a few bucks? That’s too much.

I understand that in America, showing porn is legal — but showing photos of murdered aborted fetuses isn’t. I understand that to show a high school gymnast in a porn video is constitutionally protected… but that teaching that there are immense gaps in the theory of evolution is not. I understand it all.

We poor wretched creatures, we poor, poor wretched creatures. And heaven knows I am one, but I don’t think I would ever wreck a child’s life for money. I keep thinking of that great hippie era song, “Arizona,” where a line says,

And all they can do is laugh at her,
Doesn’t anybody know how to pray?

God help Miss King. God help us all.

Where was her mother when she was growing up? Or was her mother one of those Toddler in Tiaras Moms who thought dressing her daughter up like a porn star when she was five years old was 'cute"? Oh, and by the way, where was her father?????

But of course, there's Danica Patrick, doing near-porn advertising for GoDaddy, well known site for Escort Services (nudge nudge wink wink say no more), who although a pitifully poor race car driver, is an example to little girls who might have more talent than she has, that doing Naughty Nurse advertising can make them ritch....

Seriously? Danica Patrick is the most successful woman in the history of American open-wheel racing and is the only woman to win a race in the IndyCar Series. She holds the highest finish (a very respectable third place) by a woman at the Indianapolis 500. Only a tiny number of race drivers, male or female, can match her record.

Mr. Stein, what is so disturbing about pornography is not just the sex but the utter depravity-- the brazen and ugly performance of an act that should only be performed behind closed doors.

Many watchers of porn are getting more kicks from the depravity than they are from the sex.

I read recently that there are 42 million porn sites on the internet, and many young boys are accessing the sites.

Hard-core and hateful pornography is just a mouse click away for these young lads. What they see on the sites will give them a very twisted idea of sex, and their girlfriends and future wives will suffer the consequences.

Need I say that pornography has introduced a heightened violent element in the sexual act.

As the personal is also the political, I offer the following:

When Joe Biden’s son Beau first ran for Delaware Attorney General in 2006, he campaigned that he would establish a Child Predator Task Force to prevent the flower of Delaware’s youth from being corrupted by opportunists on the internet who might sexually exploit them.

Having gone through her teenagerdom during Biden the Youger Lesser’s protectorate, I am glad to see that she reached the age of majority without having anyone take advantage of her. Apparently, during the time she spent in foster care, she developed the good judgment that one would expect of a young woman raised in such a Biden influenced environment.

I can’t wait until she buys that double barrel shotgun for self protection and follows the advice of Biden the Elder Lesser to protect against unwanted intruders. Of course, she might want to take care of those warrants in Maryland first, both federal and Delaware law have restrictions on fugitives being able to purchase or possess firearms.

We know him now as a diarist, but in his lifetime he was far more important as a champion of professional, relatively non-corrupt government administration. I have no real opinion on whether she should have been able to keep her crown; but were the officials of the Miss Teen Delaware contest more concerned for her or for their organization?

Having had a few teenagers (having been one myself eons ago), I know that there is often a disconnect in their minds between actions and consequences’. There is a belief that they can walk up to the very edge of a cliff, dangle their toes over the abyss, and then safely walk away. That the abyss has a way of sucking one over the cliff is a reality that they don't anticipate--a failing that even the best of us have to painfully learn to hard way.

Like Mr. Stein, a song comes to mind which is a hymn to compassion for a shamed young girl: Neil Young "Country Girl"

If you Google "nude Girls" you get 96,700,000 HITS. Each of the sites has thousands of images on them and I'm sure there are a lot of duplicate, but that still leave a lot of photos and videos. My point is there are an awful lot of MEN and WOMEN doing this.

A lesson to be learned. Hollywood Writer James Bacon wrote about traveling to a Nudist Colony to be a judge at a Peagant. He has a woman assisting him and she is naked as everyone else. Now, unfortunately, the lesson she's learning (one that she may well have missed in her earlier travels) is that there are consequences for the choices we make.

Should we have a set of social values in which porn is universally understood to be bad if not evil, and certainly not something a respectable person gets involved with? Sure. But we abandoned that social attitude long ago for non-judgmentalism.

On college campuses, in some of the nicest buildings available, they have dozens of well paid, tenured women's studies professors who preach that porn is evil driven not by so-called exploitation of women but rather their anti-male, anti-heterosexual philosophy. Porn is bad because men like it.

These feminists are product of, not against, chivalrous patronage that taught women to use sex to exploit men (not the other way around) such as one guy wrote "getting guys to carry her books for her". Feminism is the notion that women should still have men as their servants and even slaves, but without giving sex. Slaves should merely be allowed to exist for their services.

It's funny that both feminism and chivalrous conservatives are so hung up on sex.

It's my understanding that the women's movement, known as feminism today, started out long before the 1950's and back to the civil war era. Giving them the vote was the first mistake! (Think about it: They've voted for Nazis (Hitler) and communists ever since!)

The first thing the empowered women (usually wealthy women with too much time on their hands) did was find ways to stop men from having fun. (Something most women like to do, but usually are too busy to get around to doing.) They were the stormtroopers of the temperance movement (see how that turned out?), closing down houses of prostitution (far better for normal women to engage in it via a new tradition known as "the dinner date") and also heavily involved in going after the smut trade as well.

There may be some hard core rednecks in DE (just as there are virtually everywhere else), but to say Delaware is full of them is to deny the composition of the state’s congressional delegation. And I would suggest there are some very “decent” parts of Delaware other than its beach resorts, particularly as one looks north and northwest of Wilmington.

Well, I think it is strange, though perhaps not in the way that loulou thinks that is in. A professor at the University of Delaware [(not from the English Dept.’s Womyn’s Collective, who have done some stellar work) an august institution which awarded to the VPOTUS, Chris Christie and me Bachelor’s degrees, and for which Joe Flacco transferred and Joe Biden was a walk on for the football team] used to say in the 1970s that the state should be dissolved, and New Castle County be given to Pennsylvania, Kent County be given to Maryland and residents of Sussex County be given voting rights in Alabama.

The accuracy and inherent prejudice expressed in his sentiments notwithstanding, for better and for worse, the demographic has shifted dramatically in the last half century. With the shipbuilding and the auto assembly plants, we got significant black migration from the deep south, along with white migration from Appalachia. Though many of the latter settled in Cecil County, Maryland; the city of Wilmington became home for many of the former, and the arrest cards of large volumes of the instigators and participants of the riots and follow-on crime wave in the late 60s have Place of Birth (POB): SC or GA on their arrest cards.

The 1980s brought the New York banking employees to New Castle County as so many of the large financial institutions relocated their credit card operations here. I occasionally amuse at barbecues guessing whether a transplant is from Staten Island or Far Rockaway by their accent. Welfare reform brought another dislocation; as since the late 1990s, many welfare recipients are limited to five years of benefits in their state of resident, where once families migrated to New York projects in the 1960s and put down roots for multiple generations on the dole, a new mini-diaspora (also aided by the Giuliani era anti-crime efforts) has also brought many former residents of New York to the Diamond State. Now, POB:New York is much more common than a southern origin for out non-native criminal population.

Eastern Sussex County in and around the shore is now home to retired pensioner tax refugees from other states on the East Coast, as I noted above, and Dover Air Force Base has a large community of Air Force retiring there, disrupting Kent County’s traditionally stable demographic.

I imagine a century past, there was someone bemoaning all of those Poles and Irish immigrants who became my grandparents were arriving here from foreign shores, including my ancestors with roots back to the 19th century (and the English, Dutch, Swedish and Lenni-Lenape natives).

I won't comment on the politics here. But again for Christians, Christians only. How do you spend your time? Politicizing or evangelizing? 100 years from now who wins the mid terms simply won't matter right? Who wins the presidency four years from now won't matter. Only one thing and one thing alone matters. Where people spend eternity.

Last year, "conservatives", who were sadly almost "coincidently" Christians, were more than willing to talk to friends/co-workers/relatives people on the street for goodness sake about the election. Man phone banks, get involved. But share their faith with those same people, something infinitely more important? No. Don't want to be thought of as strange do we? And yet take that co-worker. What's more important, MR winning the election or him being shown how to get "home"?

In the case of this girl, want to change her behavior, some Christian in her life needs to talk to her, not about the midterms, but now the Risen Savior. Even afterwards we're not perfect but behavior tends to change. You're looking for the great revival? Well it starts with you.

In my wife's country the family still displays the bloody sheet after their daughter's wedding night...there's still reason in this world to be proud that your daughter remained a virgin until her wedding night.
