The Nation's Pulse

There Are Towns a Lot Tougher Than Cambridge

If only Henry Louis Gates had been a little more circumspect.

A couple of years ago around 11 o'clock at night, I got on a New York City subway with a bicycle. I wasn't sure whether it was legal but I asked the tollbooth clerk and he waved me through.

When I got on the car, however, a black transit cop came up to me and said, "You're not supposed to have a bicycle on the subway."

I responded, "I asked the tollbooth clerk and he said it was alright."

The cop stiffened. "Will you please not say, 'What?'" he barked at me.

"I didn't say 'What'" -- the words were almost out of my mouth when I grabbed them. It was easy to see where this was going. The cop would say something even more irrelevant, to which I would make an even more rational response. We would exchange volleys, me showing off my superior logical and verbal abilities, always with a note of condescension ini my voice, until he got mad enough to arrest me. I would probably spend the night in jail.

So I swallowed my pride and said, "Okay." That was enough. He left me alone and I got off at the next stop. I found out later that bikes are allowed on the subway, but what difference did it make? The important thing was he had the gun and the legal authority and he was going to win the argument. I didn't feel like staying up all night just to prove a point. It was a small surrender but one I would easily make again.

Now I realize I'm not as important Henry Louis Gates, Jr. I don't have his Harvard professorship or international reputation or his long history of pain and suffering. Yet somehow I wish he had been a little more circumspect in taking stock of the situation in Cambridge the other day before dragging the nation into another of these morose racial melodramas.

Gates and his cab driver were putting their shoulders against his front door on a Thursday afternoon in a residential neighborhood after finding it damaged in -- wouldn't you know it -- a previous burglary. A woman in the street saw them and called the police. An officer responded almost immediately. Is there anything unusual about this? Would we want the police or the woman to act in any other way? If nothing else, Gates should feel fortunate that he lives in a neighborhood where people look after such things. In many another urban neighborhood, somebody could be prying a door open in mid-afternoon and no one would pay the slightest attention. Even if they did, the police might take half an hour to arrive.

Gates could have perceived the whole thing for what it was -- an obvious misunderstanding. He could have produced his identification, proved to the officer that he lived in the house and explained his unusual behavior, perhaps showing a little deference to the law in the process. Instead, he decided to treat the whole things as an intolerable insult, refusing to step outside and insinuating that the police were only at his door "Because I'm a black man in America." His rant attracted such a crowd that the officer was finally forced to put him in handcuffs for disorderly conduct. This is what police officers must do. They cannot simply walk away from a disruptive situation. Their business is to maintain public order. That the charges were later dropped only proves the point. An arrest in this circumstance is only meant to pacify the situation, not inflict some kind of permanent punishment.

So is this all a matter of "racial profiling"? If it is, then we'd better find the woman who made the report and arrest her because surely she is the guilty party. Once a police officer arrives on the scene, his sole responsibility is to find out what is happening. Gates treated all this as irrelevant. He was too important to be the subject of a police enquiry. "Do you know who you're dealing with?" he announced. (All this is eerily reminiscent of that other Boston Brahmin, John Kerry, who when caught cutting into theater lines or otherwise exercising his prerogatives would always respond, "Do you know who I am?") In any case, it was obviously his preconceived notions that turned a routine investigation into an incendiary confontation.

What if Gates had actually been an intruder? Is the policeman supposed to walk away without determining what is going on? If an unknown person inside a house announces the investigating officer is a racist, does that settle the matter? If Gates the homeowner had lost valuable property in the incident, would he be satisfied if the police told him, "We caught the guy in the act but he said we were being racist so we had to let him get away"? Would Gates accept this as an excuse, or -- since he was now the disadvantaged party -- would he discover yet another insidious form of "racism"?

Gates has chosen to drag the whole country into a racial melodrama just to prove a point. Maybe that isn't so bad. Maybe we can forget about health care for a while. (On the other hand, maybe the liberal press will tell us we have to adopt Obama's health-care program in order to assuage our guilt over the ordeal of Henry Louis Gates.) Boston is a very class-conscious town, with Harvard professors at the top and Irish cops very near the bottom. It won't be surprising to see the entire academic establishment set its weight upon the police force, once again turning them into scapegoats with all the implications for crime and disorder that occurred in the 1960s.

In any case, there's a much better example of how Gates could have responded. In The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Malcolm X tells of another encounter with the Cambridge police. In this case he was actually out with a carload of thieves burglarizing homes in a residential neighborhood. While cruising the streets they spotted a cop car making its rounds. Knowing they were about to be "profiled," Malcolm X had an inspiration. He jumped out of the car and flagged down the cops, pretending to be lost and asking for directions. The cops bought it and the whole gang got away.

Would that Henry Louis Gates had the same kind of street smarts instead of his more predictable academic arrogance. He might have saved himself spending a few hours in handcuffs and the whole country a grueling ordeal. If nothing else, however, Gates is an egotist, so maybe that's what he wanted in the first place.

Why did the cab driver hang around? I've never heard of a cab driver staying around after they get their fare. In the meantime chew on this:

“There is a class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs-partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”

- Booker T. Washington (1856-1915.)

Spot on, Mr. Tucker. Good to see someone heaping the weight of common sense and self-restraint on Mr. Gates and our fearless leader.

I will submit that folks of every race abdicate any agenda they may have when faced with a cop (of any race) with a gun every day with much less fanfare. Gates got what he deserved.

It would have been refreshing for Obama to put the "stupid" label where it belonged, but 20 years of listening to Wright and the "United States of KKK" certainly precluded that from happening.

The lack of real leadership in the White House is unfortunate, to say the least.

Darin| 7.24.09 @ 7:09AM

Any bets that Gates's address is on the "do not respond" list at local police stations?

Michael L. Hauschild| 7.24.09 @ 7:24AM

The real tragedy here is not that the “Black Tower” mentality was led away in cuffs, or that there now exists a “Black House” making proclamations which define the term ignorance. Arrogance is multicultural, but continued examples of prejudice be they reverse or otherwise are no less offensive having their origin in academia, politics, or judicial nominees.

Rocco| 7.24.09 @ 7:25AM

What we have here is another Ivy League pompous blow hard who happens to be black. I don't give a hoot what color they are, they are all equally deserving of my deep contempt. These people have over inflated ideas of their own importance, have thin skins and fragile egos, including that imposter in the White House who should have kept his trap shut after saying he didn't know all the facts. I scorn all of them and give them the contempt they so richly deserve. And when accused of racism, as I have been on a couple of occasions, I look them in the eye and tell them in no uncertain terms that they could stuff their racism up their a##. (The reaction is priceless.) I let them know flat out I am no guilt-ridden white sissy who will allow himself to be rolled over.

As Mr. Tucker was intelligent to do, on two occasions, I have been visited by police at my home because of "incidents" in the neighborhood. Upon request, I showed them my driver's license and my (retiree) military ID. They were courteous, thanked me and went on their way. COMMON SENSE, people. It is so damned uncommon these days.

Mr. Rosencrans, thanks for the Booker T. Washington quote. It is priceless and spot on!

stephanie| 7.24.09 @ 7:28AM

Gates teaches African-American Studies.
What else would he be, but racist.
Keeping it stirred up is beneficial to him. And that our president took the stance he did, is truely unfortunate. This has indeed opened up another can of worms.

Curly Smith| 7.24.09 @ 7:48AM

"Yet somehow I wish he had been a little more circumspect in taking stock of the situation in Cambridge the other day before dragging the nation into another of these morose racial melodramas."

Umm... How do you know that Gates didn't want to get arrested and that the situation isn't playing out exactly as he intended?

Old Soldier| 7.24.09 @ 7:54AM

If Gates had been courteous and cooperative there never would have been an arrest. There would also not be a big media opportunity for this blowhard to spew his hate. I think that this was a very calculated move by Gates. Unfortunately for him, he picked the wrong white cop to accuse.

Bdub| 7.24.09 @ 7:54AM

Curly wrote

We don't know that, but if he did, that makes him disingenuous and a liar at best.

Either way, a pox on his house.

Glenn| 7.24.09 @ 7:55AM

Professor Gates is just another profiteer of the highly lucrative American race industry, albeit a more higher end and ostensibly respectable one that such bottom-feeders as Sharpton, Jackson, Wright and Kimber. I suspect that his immediate reaction to being questioned by the police was far less a sense of righteous indignation than it was all about his quick perception that opportunity was knocking for another 15 minutes of his victim agenda.

Melvin| 7.24.09 @ 8:18AM

In spite of all the titles and flourishes that Mr. Gates has, an ass is still an ass.

jack| 7.24.09 @ 8:19AM

How do race baiters like Gates end up in places like Harvard? How do places like Harvard graduate students like Obama who appear to know nothing of basic economics, world history or US history? I wish I could claim race everytime I have been arrested for simply acting like a fool. Its time for African Americans to denounce grifters like Gates and Obama. They are no different than lowlifes like Sharpton and Jackson. You go to jail when you mess with the law no matter your color. I am proof of that.
This whole thing is simply an attempt by Obama to either distract the public from inspecting his moronic attempt to take over the health system. either way he is a racist just like rev wright.

Louis Jenkins| 7.24.09 @ 8:20AM

Law Enforcement Officers have discovered where The Obama-Community Activitist-In-Chief's loyalties are! I'm sure there's a bunch of 'em out there who voted for him. Wise up America! Obama's slash and burn policy never rests. Which one of you will be the next to get the proverbial knife in the back?

Deborah D| 7.24.09 @ 8:32AM

It truly is unfortunate that certain people are so consumed with race that they can't perceive of any other rational explanation. That Prof. Gates and Pres. Obama both came to the same conclusion means they have both been steeped in the Rev. Wright school of racial prejudice. These are our teachers of the younger generation. While the majority of whites have gotten further and further away from any kind of racial thinking (taking to heart MLK's "judged by the content of their character, not by the color of their skin") -- it doesn't seem to work in reverse, does it?

Tim| 7.24.09 @ 8:32AM

Maybe the one most striking thing about this disgrace is how the President so quickly and easily steeped into racial scold mode. There he was lecturing us on our racism, and giving that wierd pronounciation of 'latino" that all the hustlers use.
Suddenly he was no longer President, but "The Black President" and it was clear he had had enough of white stupidity.
I am sure that during his campaign he had a daily brief where somebody said, "Don't ever sound like Jesse Jackson". Well, he sounded like Jackson the other night and I wouldn't be surprised if it costs him in the next wave of approval polls.

stephanie| 7.24.09 @ 8:33AM

I had another thought as I was shoveling maure in my barn this morning.
With obama telling us all how "stupidly" the police acted, we now have proof that we have an angry racist as our president. We knew this time last year that his wife is an upfront racist, and now we have the proof that he is of the same cloth.
I truely hope that the republicans are getting their act together for the elections next year!

Andrew B| 7.24.09 @ 8:34AM

In my career, I have been awoken in the middle of the night many times by the alarm company from my place of business. It requires me to drive to work, shut off the alarm and check the building. It also means that I have frequently met police officers while doing so.

I have never had a run-in like Professor Gates, but that is because I am always courteous, up-front and helpful. I have even asked the police to come in and help me search the building, which puts their concerns at rest.

I am not black, but neither am I an arrogant jerk like Professor Gates. I also understand that, late at night in a dark building with an alarm going off, the cost of my stupidity could be very high indeed.

Big Java| 7.24.09 @ 8:41AM

Many years ago my wise Daddy drummed into my thick skull when dealing with a police officer, you need to 'yes sir' or 'yes ma'm' him/her to death; and that is mostly all you say.

Rick| 7.24.09 @ 8:42AM

It all boils down to a 58 year old man having a temper tantrum and then playing the race card as an excuse for his immaturity.

Michael Tomlinson| 7.24.09 @ 8:53AM

Since I've never heard of Gates what "pain and suffering" is Tucker referencing? That he's a rich black man, living in a rich liberal bastion with the power of the Presidency to bully policemen? Or is this the “collective” suffering of the 21st century African-American community . . .?

This incident had nothing to do with Gate’s academic arrogance. The problem is like Obama Gates allowed his latent racism to create a firestorm out of nothing. What this encounter does illustrate is the prevalent racism among African-Americans and liberals who are looking to be divisive.

Sometimes mistakes are made. Had Gates responded calmly the situation would have been diffused with a perfunctory apology from the police, but Gates chose to escalate the altercation by his combative behavior – something real home-invaders do when confronted by the police. Why didn’t Gates, who had done nothing wrong, respond calmly and/or civilly?

In August 2001 after finishing a military school I took 10 days of leave to spend with my wife before deploying. I'm an Anglo, clean shaven, wear my gray hair very short and sometimes wear a ball cap. The police in the area were looking for a white bearded man with long brown hair half my age who wore a ball cap that was robbing convenience stores. An over zealous African-American night clerk at the motel noticed I was wearing a baseball cap and called the police (I guess we all look alike). The police came to our room, knocked on the door and asked if I would come out (my wife was armed in case this was an attempted robbery). I did so. At first they were a bit rude and confrontational, but I kept my cool and after a lengthy talk things were resolved. My action was a chose that avoided inflating a situation. Later I was flattered that the clerk thought I looked like a man half my age so I didn't file a complaint against her.

My suggestion is Gates take anger management courses, racial sensitivity training and a ride along with a local white policeman. These things would go a long way in dispelling his racist stereotypes and help him control his temper in stressful situations.

Jack Bauer| 7.24.09 @ 9:00AM

I assume the Professor indulged in Gate Speech.

Anyone who has ever watched an episode of Cops knows exactly what went down, except in that show the perp is often some tattooed white guy without his shirt...

Cop goes to an incident.

Cop spots suspicious character.

Cop approaches character and politely asks questions, such as "Who are you sir, and what are you doing?"

Suspicious character get's more and more verbally belligerent.

Cop finally has enough, arrests and cuffs the guy.

GB| 7.24.09 @ 9:03AM

The racist bit is secondary, Gates is well educated and perceptive, he saw a big payday! Watch and wait.

Mike| 7.24.09 @ 9:36AM

An interesting article. Not being there, I will never really know what happened. It appears that Professor Gates acted stupidly. However, once he established his identity, one wonders why a police office who trains other officers not to profile could not defuse the situation. Perhaps Dr. Gates was too out of control. Perhaps not. I won't ever know because I wasn't there. Even if I were, my biases may have prevented me from making a truly objective judgment. Mr. Tucker writes: "Now I realize I'm not as important Henry Louis Gates, Jr. I don't have his Harvard professorship or international reputation or his long history of pain and suffering." The words "long history of pain and suffering" grabbed my attention. Being white, I have no first hand experience of what it means to be black in American. Candidly, I glad I don't. If you are white, aren't you glad too? Its too gratifying playing playing the resentful, victimized white guy role.

About the Campaign Against Racial Profiling

The Racial Justice Program's Campaign Against Racial Profiling fights law enforcement and private security practices that disproportionately target people of color and Muslims for investigation and enforcement. We represent individuals who have been victims of racial profiling by airlines, police, and government agencies, and our present work also encompasses major initiatives in public education, including the creation of a film, bustcard, “Know Your Rights”brochure, and a fact sheet on Highlights in the Fight Against Racial Profiling. Our advocacy also includes lobbying for the passage of data collection and anti-profiling legislation and litigation of egregious airline and highway profiling cases.

What Is Racial Profiling?

Racial Profiling is any police or private security practice in which a person is treated as a suspect because of his or her race, ethnicity, nationality or religion. This occurs when police investigate, stop, frisk, search or use force against a person based on such characteristics instead of evidence of a person's criminal behavior. It often involves the stopping and searching of people of color for traffic violations, known as "DWB" or "driving while black or brown." Although normally associated with African Americans and Latinos, racial profiling and "DWB" have also become shorthand phrases for police stops of Asians, Native Americans, and, increasingly after 9/11, Arabs, Muslims and South Asians.

Racial profiling can also involve pedestrian stops, "gang" databases, bicycle stops, use of police attack dogs, suspicion at stores and malls, immigration worksite raids, and in the 2000 presidential election in Florida, harassment on the way to polls, "voting while black or brown". Customs and other airport officials also engage in racial profiling of passengers. Read more about different kinds of racial profiling.

Is Racial Profiling Real?

Most Americans think so. A July 2001 Gallup poll reported that 55 percent of whites and 83 percent of blacks believe racial profiling is widespread. And the reports of thousands of racial and ethnic group members across the country add credibility to the perception that racial profiling is real. These are stories from all walks of life, not just hardworking everyday people, but celebrities, professional athletes, and members of the military. Also, reports of racial profiling come from respected members of communities of color such as police commanders, prosecutors, judges, state legislators, lawyers, dentists and even representatives in Congress, who have been victims.

Racial profiling is a new term for an old practice known by other names – institutional racism and discrimination – and owes its existence to prejudice that has existed in this country since slavery.

Tens of thousands of innocent drivers, pedestrians, and shoppers across the country are victims of racial profiling. And these discriminatory police stops and searches have reached epidemic proportions in recent years, fueled by the "War on Drugs" and the "War on Terror" that have given police a pretext to target people they think fit a "drug courier," "gang member," or "terrorist" profile. In fact, racial profiling is the first step in a long road that leads to the heavily disproportionate incarceration of people of color, especially young men, for drug-related crimes, and of Arabs, Muslims and South Asians for suspicion of terrorism. Racial profiling continues to occur even though people of color are no more likely than whites to use or sell drugs, and Arabs Muslims and South Asians are no more likely than whites to be terrorists.

Words are cheap, and means nothing. The flag the wars. The question I would like to ask all Blacks in America why are they fighting in the ARAB world, when they don't have freedom in their own country.

That is something I have never understood.

New Report From ACLU And RWG Finds Racial Profiling Still Pervasive (6/30/2009)

Groups Submit Report To U.N. Committee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: (212) 549-2666; media@aclu.org

NEW YORK – Widespread racial profiling by law enforcement agents as a result of Bush-era policies remains a pervasive problem throughout the United States, according to a report out today by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Rights Working Group (RWG). Government policies are a major cause of the disproportionate stopping and searching of racial minorities by law enforcement agencies, according to the report, which was submitted today to the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD).

"Racial profiling remains a widespread and pervasive problem throughout the U.S., impacting the lives of millions of people in the African American, Asian, Latino, South Asian, Arab and Muslim communities," said Chandra Bhatnagar, staff attorney with the ACLU Human Rights Program and the main author of the report. "The U.S. government must take urgent, direct action to rid the nation of the scourge of racial and ethnic profiling and bring this country into conformity with both the Constitution and international human rights obligations."

Today's report came in response to a last-minute Bush administration submission to CERD in January 2009 that was plagued by omissions, deficiencies and mischaracterizations. In both its initial report to CERD in April 2007 and the follow-up submission in January, the Bush administration relied on the Justice Department's 2003 "Guidance Regarding the Use of Race by Federal Law Enforcement Agents" to support claims the government was taking steps to eliminate racial profiling. However, that document doesn't cover profiling based on religion or national origin, doesn't apply to state or local law enforcement agencies and doesn't include any mechanisms for enforcement or punishment for violating the recommendations. It also contains a blanket exception to the recommendations in cases of "national security" or "border integrity."

As a result of U.S. reliance on the vague Justice Department guidance and other Bush policies, people of color have been disproportionately victimized through various government initiatives including FBI surveillance and questioning, special registration programs, border stops, immigration enforcement programs and the creation of "no fly lists," according to today's report.

"Instead of curbing racial profiling, the overbroad national security and border integrity exceptions in the Justice Department guidance have actually promoted profiling and created justification for state and local law enforcement agents to racially profile those who are or appear to be Arab, Muslim, South Asian or Latino," said Margaret Huang, Executive Director of RWG. "We hope the Obama administration will fix the failed policies of the Bush administration and live up to its commitment to end racial profiling in the United States."

Recently, Attorney General Eric Holder stated that ending racial profiling is a "priority" for the Obama administration and that profiling is "simply not good law enforcement." Today's report from the ACLU and RWG calls on the Obama administration to fix Bush administration policies that led to pervasive racial profiling. It also calls on Congress to pass the End Racial Profiling Act (ERPA), which would compel all law enforcement agencies to bar racial profiling, create and apply profiling procedures and document data on stop, search and arrest activities by race.

CERD is expected to consider the U.S. government's follow up submission, the submission of the ACLU and RWG and the submissions of other civil and human rights organizations in its August session. CERD will then issue recommendations to the U.S. government regarding its human rights obligations under the treaty.

CERD is an independent group of experts that oversees compliance with the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, a treaty signed and ratified by the U.S. in 1994. All levels of U.S. government are required to comply with the treaty's provisions, which require countries to review national, state and local policies and to amend or repeal laws and regulations that create or perpetuate racial discrimination.

The ACLU and RWG's report to CERD is available online at: www.aclu.org/intlhumanrights/racialjustice/40055pub20090629.html

The Bush administration's final submission to CERD is at: www.state.gov/documents/organization/113905.pdf

And then there's the story (don't know whether it's true or not) of the busy airline counter and an irate traveler butts in at the counter screaming.."Do you know who I am?" The attendant picks up a microphone and says over the public address system..."There is a person at the counter who doesn't know who he is. If anyone can identify him, please report to the ticket counter."

In reality, most of these people that think that everyone should know who they are, are really not worth knowing at all.

Thomas| 7.24.09 @ 10:01AM

This is simply a case of a man with connections talking himself into jail. It happens all of the time. There may even have been alcohol or recreational chemicals involved to produce such behavior. If the police report is any indication, it was a totally justified arrest. What is interesting is that prosecutors dropped the charges. In the same circumstances, we ordinary mortals would still be facing a trial date.

The larger issue of perceived bigotry can not be answered as easily, simply because there is an entire industry devoted to keeping this perception alive in this country. This is illustrated magnificently by Making the world aware of USA's post. In that poster's world, minorities are stopped for their appearance, not for any violation of the law. While whites are stopped only for law violations. And that mentality has no bearing on the case of Professor Gates.

The sad, pathetic reality of this situation is that Gates was the one doing the racial profiling. Rather than seeing a cop doing his job, Gates immediately profiled the white cop as someone looking to put a black man in his place.

I guess we should add "feigned outrage while black" to our lexicon. I wonder if Spike Lee would care to make a movie about that.

Kearney| 7.24.09 @ 10:41AM

Gates was wrong, but he is small stuff. When the President of the United States gets involved and tells (mistakenly) how the police should do their job, the nation has a serious problem. We have a micro-manager mentality in Obama, and the nation is in for a hard time.

Unfortunately with too many blacks it is race first, last and always. Very difficult to deal with that kind of mind set from a White point of view. It's usually best to just allow them their infantile rants and move on.

Robbie Tolan dreamed of a career with Major League Baseball.

The 23-year-old, by all accounts, was looking forward to spring training and hoping to move on from the minor leagues after a stint in 2008 for Texas City’s Bay Area Toros of the Continental Baseball League and stretches in 2007 playing for the Washington Nationals rookie team, the Gulf Coast League Nationals, and the Hagerstown (Md.) Suns, a Class A team in the South Atlantic League.

His father, Bobby, was an outfielder for several teams, including the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals, with whom he won a World Series title in 1967.

That dream is in serious jeopardy, now, as Tolan lies in a hospital recovering from bullet wounds after being shot in the driveway of his home in the tony Houston suburb of Bellaire by a white police officer.

Police said Tolan was shot at 2 a.m. New Year’s Eve while officers were investigating what they believed was a stolen vehicle. According to a statement released by the Bellaire Police Department, officers questioned Tolan and his cousin, Anthony Cooper, as they got out of a 2004 Nissan Xterra in the family’s driveway.

“An altercation ensued as officers attempted to detain and question these two suspects,” the statement said. “Sgt. Jeff Cotton of the Bellaire Police Department discharged his firearm, striking one of the suspects once. Sgt. Cotton then immediately summoned an ambulance and attempted to render aid until the ambulance arrived.”

According to the family’s lawyer, Geoffrey Berg, however, Tolan’s parents came outside and told police the car belonged to them, that Tolan and his cousin lived at the home. Both young men had been forced by police to lie on the ground, Berg said.

Hearing the commotion, Bobby and Marian Tolan, came out to investigate. At one point, Berg said, Cotton grabbed Marian Tolan and pushed her against the garage door. When Robbie Tolan made a move to protest, he was shot.

Gates is nothing more than a leftist race whore; a revolutionary politician masquerading as a scholar. He's just like Cornell West and all the rest of the bogus "African-American Studies" crowd (and "Women's Studies," etc.) that infests our institutions of laughable learning.

I'm sure that when he was trying to shoulder his door open it ran through his mind that the police might show up and he was all ready for them with his rehearsed script when they did. From there, things played out exactly as he wanted them to, other than the fact that there were so many witnesses his fraud ended up being exposed (Why else the "your mama" taunt, which, if the cops had truly been racist, could have very easily gotten him killed?). He'll be more careful next time, I'm sure.

William 5| 7.24.09 @ 12:50PM

Wow, the venom spewed in these responses is rather amazing. Are you guys really this angry?

In our joining of sides, are we not overlooking the obviousness of this situation?

Children. Both grown men in the situation, Mr. Gates and Mr. Crowley, were presented with a situation and, from all accounts (from both sides), an opportunity to diffuse the situation. Both men decided to act like children instead.

Mr. Crowley seems a very intelligent man. Mr. Gates seems a very intelligent man. That the situation resulted in an arrest is indicative of both men's failures to use that intelligence. Both sides can now dress it up however they wish, but that's merely window dressing.

Further, that both gentlemen now refuse to A) apologize and B) meet with the other to patch things up, well, I believe I last acted and thought in such a manner back 'round the age of 8.

Absurd.

William 5| 7.24.09 @ 12:54PM

Further, I would like an apology from both Mr. Gates and Mr. Crowley, for the fact that I've now had to wade through the press overkill of this subject, for far too many days now, in order to get to news that actually matters.

And I'm gonna hold breath until they do!

Crusader| 7.24.09 @ 1:03PM

The point of any police encounter is to get it over with as quickly and as calmly as possible. I, being a "leave me the hell alone" type of conservative, am no fan of cops, (especially our ever-increasing para-military wannabe "rogue" cops). However, if this were me, I would have simply met the cop outside (no way for him to assume I'd waived my 4A rights and visually search the inside of my home and make up RAS for a further search), shown my valid drivers' license with my home's address, apologized for the misunderstanding, and sent him on his way.

If this happened and the cop further persisted then you may have a case of an overzealous rogue cop.

Doing anything different is just not in my non-perpetual victim DNA. But I'm White and heterosexual, so I am not a member of the plethora of perpetual victim classes.

Libtard reader, its self-hating whites like you who helped elect the Kenyan usurper in chief. I wouldn't pi$$ on the likes of you if you were on fire.

Ann| 7.24.09 @ 1:16PM

In a strange way, this is kind of amusing. I lived in Cambridge for 15 years. Once I smiled (maybe a tad sarcastically) at a bunch of cops because they were in a donut shop; I thought they were going to arrest me. That was during the busing controversy and times were testy.

In another Boston neighborhood, I once had a MDC cop pull me over because I went into a swimming pool parking lot the wrong way. I had lost my dog, was upset and he made fun of me. He was just a random jerk...FYI I'm 5'1" and Irish Catholic! In Providence, where my mentally ill brother lives in a mostly minority neighborhood, I've also been followed by cops because I had out of state plates and they thought I was buying drugs.

Cops are cops, so I kept my mouth shut in all cases. Black men may be targeted more than others, but one has to comply with cops. And I don't envy them. Crowley sounds like a good man and Gates has been in academia too long. As is always true in Boston, this is about class and race, not just the latter.

Liberal Reader| 7.24.09 @ 1:23PM

This website has more than its share of racist readers, which is a shame, because it reinforces the false notion that most conservatives are racist.

Am. Spec. might consider covering racial issues -- after all, race is one of the major themes of American history and politics -- in such a way as to alienate the bigots that are clinging it like barnacles.

Perhaps the in-your-face photograph of Gates coupled with the assumption that this is yet another example of "reverse racism" and white victimization attracts the nasty racist posting you find here.

William 5| 7.24.09 @ 1:36PM

Well said Liberal Reader.

There are constructive dialogues to be had on this website, with these articles, with most of the readers.

There are a few, easily identifiable, who you shan't pay any mind to.

Liberal Reader| 7.24.09 @ 1:51PM

If you read current literature and public statements by groups like the KKK or Aryan Nation, you find them attempting to reinsert themselves into main stream discourse by focusing on a) "reverse racism" and b) "European heritage."

Reverse racism is so attractive as a topic to these people because it appeals to Americans' desire for fair play and our sympathy with underdogs. It also BORROWS or appropriates the language of black civil rights, pretending that -- say -- a white man unfairly treated by an affirmative action policy is no different from -- say -- a black man in 1957 being denied the vote or a job, or even perhaps being lynched for something he said in church.

All Americans should consider the importance of equality before the law and the larger issues of fairness when it comes to race. As it turned out, the Ricci case was well decided by the Supreme Court, and obviously a goal is for a society in which all people have a fair shot at success.

But the undercurrent of white resentment and divisive racial hostility that is just perceptible beneath the surface of some of these stories is extremely unproductive, and it gives a place for some pretty ugly bigotry.

MuchAdo| 7.24.09 @ 1:58PM

I am not a lawyer and certainly laws governing this vary from state to state. But my question is whether or not a policeman has the right to stay in one's home after they've learned that IT IS YOUR HOUSE. At that point, don't they need a warrant to continue to remain in your house?

Let's assume a black policeman did the same thing as this white policeman did, and the homeowner was Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. How would that work? How far would the policeman be able to take it? Can you see a black policeman hauling Sean Hannity out of his own house in handcuffs in the same situation? And do you think Hannity would keep HIS mouth shut? Face it, it is impossible to imagine.

Now, with Limbaugh it is different because there could have been, in the past, a drug angle, but still. Then they would need a warrant to continue on in the house. It just seems like a Catch 22 situation when a policeman can handcuff a homeowner for the act of entering his own home.

I imagine Professor Gates couldn't believe what was happening. And for all of those who used crude racial language in your posts - you demean yourselves, not Professor Gates or President Obama. I'm assuming that none of you are professors or presidents.

William 5| 7.24.09 @ 2:12PM

The "outrage" expressed as a result of Obama's comment is almost as absurd as the entire situation.

That it got to the point that a question about this grade school situation would be asked to the President, is absurd.

No one, it seems, on either side, conservative or liberal, wants to recognize the obvious. There's no way this should have resulted in an arrest. Both Mr. Gates and Mr. Crowley are culpable in the resulting situation. But it's far too easy to point fingers.

How old are we?

William 5| 7.24.09 @ 2:17PM

Further, it is stupid. That's a perfect word. Gates is Obama's friend, so he's not going to call his friend stupid.

But as a lefty, I'll call him stupid. I'm not so blind by my politics and beliefs not to recognize the absurdity of this entire situation.

A Harvard professor was acting very stupidly.

The arresting officer was acting very stupidly.

Moving on now...

Chris| 7.24.09 @ 2:27PM

He wasn't arrested for entering his own home, but for disorderly conduct. I don't agree with the charge, but cops love to slap handcuffs on disrespectful people, whatever their race. I understand Gates being hot, the cop should have walked away and let Gates cool off. End of story.

Marc Jeric| 7.24.09 @ 2:28PM

That blubbering racist Gates is director of Harvard's WEB Du Bois Institute. Who was that guy Du Bois? Well, amomg other things he was a proud recipient of the Lenin Peace Prize, shared with previous recipients Stalin and Mao. Upon his return fron the USSR and China in 1957-58 he was so impressed with the mass murders there and their system of Gulag re-education and extermination that he became member of the Communist Party USA. Then, disgusted with American capitalism and imperialism he went to live in that socialist paradise Ghana. When that racist bottomfeeder Gates said to the policeman that "I would 'talk' to your mama" - well, in his place (I mean policeman's) I would forget about my career and would have beaten that "racaille" Gates into pulp before arresting him. What is Harvard doing with these criminals-professors"?

Liberal Reader| 7.24.09 @ 2:28PM

I agree that the whole situation is stupid.

I also ardently wish Obama had not remarked on the situation.

Complaints about police misconduct can and should be handled at a local level.

The president should be concerned with the big picture. If he has anything to say about police, it should be praise: we live, all told, in one of the best policed countries in the world. If we are arrested, we have great protections and rights. The police, by and large, are honest, brave, and good.

Professor Gates sounds like he has a legitimate complaint. I'm sure he'll be able to make himself heard in Cambridge. For Obama to get involved is just needless distraction.

Liberal Reader| 7.24.09 @ 2:32PM

Marc Jeric --

Your desire to be a police man so you can "beat" black men for being disrespectful is very disturbing to read.

However, I can be grateful that you are not a police man, and that probably you would not pass even the most rudimentary testing required to become one.

William 5| 7.24.09 @ 2:38PM

M Jeric -

DuBois is actually a fascinating historical figure and unbelievably complex. Check out D.L. Lewis' biography - it's so indepth you'd think he (the biographer) lived alongside the man.

If anything, the history of this wonderfully complex country of ours, and it's figures, deserve more than a 'Hannity' treatment of one's life.

PMW| 7.24.09 @ 2:42PM

Gates is clearly the only one in this situation that acted racist.

OlderFarte| 7.24.09 @ 2:50PM

Recently there was a fundraiser event in California where two 60+ year-old caucasian women were thrown to the ground on their own property by a police officer responding to a noise complaint? A similar incident where older, non-threatening persons who questioned the policeman's authority and were then man-handled and arrested ON THEIR OWN PROPERTIES!

Where are all the conservatives who defend their gun rights because of fears of the government coming and dragging them out of their homes? We are all very aware that (alot) of police abuse their authority whenever they feel like it. It's wrong and you all know it is. Cops should respect their elders.

He was requested to cease and desist and he refused and continued to cause a disturbance. He refused a second instruction to stop causing a disturbance and was arrested. This should not have merited more than a small article in the local paper. Except that the President of the United States of America, leader of the Free World, decided to weigh in on the issue.

Assets; Time to Get Rid of the Federal Reserve Act of 1913
Submitted by Administrator on Sat, 04/11/2009 - 21:19
Here we reproduce Patrick S. J. Carmack’s warning letter about the bailouts of banks. The gist applies to government bailouts of banks and other financial institutions in general.

The irony of the U.S. government bailing out failing banks! The U.S. government had around $10 trillion of debt, which it had no hope of paying off, before it started bailing out failing banks/financial institutions. How does a bankrupt entity bailout institutions facing bankruptcy?

Criminal Jews, empowered by the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, are leeching more wealth from the public. As Carmack warns, the Jewish banking parasites will restore the economy eventually, but emerge more powerful and with greater concentration of wealth in their hands. The boom-bust economic cycle will repeat till almost no person owns anything but the ability to borrow, credit scores rather than savings will determine the average American’s ability to engage in economic activity – as in buying a home or car – and no one could publicly speak against criminal parasitic Jews.

The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 needs to be repealed ASAP. Fractional reserve banking – the practice of creating over 90% of a loan out of nothing – and money creation in any form should be forbidden on the part of private banks.

Bernard ‘Bernie’ Madoff $50- or $65-billion Ponzi Scheme – A Newer Type of Jewish Deception
Submitted by Administrator on Sun, 04/12/2009 - 05:40
With the Jewish Crime Network exposed to millions around the world, criminal Jews are increasingly looking at having some of their own criminals arrested to protect the Jewish crime network at large. The $50- or $65-billion ponzi scheme allegedly run by Jew Bernard Madoff is a case study of this phenomenon.

Here are a few of Madoff’s alleged victims:

Victim | Loss

HSBC | $1 billion

Access International | $1.4 billion

Fortis Bank | $1.4 billion

Tremont Capital | $3.3 billion

Union Bancaire Privet | $1.1 billion

Kingate Management Ltd. | $2.8 billion

Santander | $3.1 billion

How can professional financial institutions – banks, investment firms, hedge funds – become the victim of a ponzi scheme? There’s no way professional financial institutions will invest hundreds of millions or more with any entity without a thorough multi-year audit to determine how the returns were being obtained. In other words, a ponzi scheme won’t get past professional financial institutions, period.

The Bernard Madoff case gets more interesting though. We are told that he had been running his ponzi scheme for 20 years, unbeknownst to the SEC, other financial regulators and even his own senior employees! The mainstream media have extensively covered the Madoff ponzi scheme, reported Madoff’s assets as between $800-$900 million, but they have yet to tell us what happened to the $50- or $65-billion allegedly swindled by Madoff and what is a good estimate of the amount of money swindled by Madoff.

What is the Bernard ‘Bernie’ Madoff case about? It’s not difficult to figure out:

Jews are trying to convey that a few bad fish are responsible for the financial turmoil instead of the concerted working of many.
To convey the impression that organized Jewry isn’t at fault, Jews flooded media outlets with all the Jews that have supposedly been defrauded by Madoff. The victimizing Jews are claiming to be victims, as usual! Just a few examples:
First we heard about bigwigs such as Jeffrey Katzenberg (CEO of Dreamworks), Carl Shapiro (Kay Windsor clothing), Steven Speilberg (Film Director), Elie Wiesel (Master Holohoaxer), etc. Take a look at this image from the Daily mail online; an all-Jew list isn’t a coincidence.
Jews gave extensive publicity to a Mr. Goldstein who lost his life savings to Madoff. Why not a Mr. Jones or Mr. Johnson?
Then there was (Jewish) Brandeis University ending up on the verge of financial collapse, facing a $79 million deficit over the next 6 years, thanks to Bernard Madoff.
We were told about the sob story of the financial rug pulled out from under three generations of the Siegler family, as an illustration that the heartless Madoff even targeted non-millionaire Jews.
Since fraud is alleged, there’s going to be an ‘investigation’ involving high profile lawyers and finance people. This will allow Jews to leech a few hundred million dollars from the taxpayer for the ‘investigation.’ The investigation will obviously be a joke. As it is, Bernard Madoff plead guilty, obviating the need for prosecutors examining the financial trail of evidence, which is surely very scant of documentation.
Since fraud is alleged, there will be compensations and tax credits.
Obviously, criminal Jewish parasites are going about leeching more money by presenting us with the ridiculous ponzi scheme tale. But the more important issue, and reason for cheer, is that they have to now make some sacrifices to preserve their crime network. Who gets sacrificed? Preferably the less important members of the international Jewish crime network. An old Madoff, who may have some disease that won’t let him live long, may just have been the right Jewish criminal to sacrifice. But there’s bound to be some friction among Jews regarding who should be sacrificed, eventually leading to criminal Jews trusting each other less because each Jew is trying to sacrifice any Jew but himself. This should progress to some criminal Jews considering ratting out other criminal Jews in exchange for police protection, and if this starts happening, then it won’t be long before the Jewish crime network is destroyed.

Jeff | 7.24.09 @ 3:34PM

The whole situation was an unfortunate misunderstanding. Both sides should have shown restraint. Gates by not continually yelling at the cop and the cop by understanding why Gates was so upset. That being said, the thinly veiled rascism and not so thinly resentment of this site never ceases to amaze me. Gates, a respected Harvard academic was arrested for disorderly conduct on his OWN PROPERTY. You conservatives are always so uppity about being bothered by the government yet you show no sympathy. Hmmm, is it because he is black and an academic. Funny how some right wing hypocrisy works?

Dustoff| 7.24.09 @ 3:36PM

Let's see. Obama was the Prez of the Havard law review and being that he should have known not to say a thing until he had all the facts. But he didn't. Instead he opened his big mouth and now he's having to eat his words.
Not what I would say very smart. For a person they claim is SO smart.

Mazzuchelli| 7.24.09 @ 3:37PM

I will admit a deep-seated resentment of the bloated professional victim class in this country no matter their actual financial status, e. g., Gates, Sharpton, La Raza, et al. After living in San Francisco for years, I've witnessed and experienced dealings with angry protected classes as well as angry cops.

There are jerks in every profession but cops are generally fair, they treat us all with contempt. I really don't have a problem with that because it maintains a level playing field for the average Joe as it relates to the police.

Dealing with protected classes is a whole other ball game. There may be rules but no one has told me what they are. All that comes through is an overwhelming hatred and resentment for someone that represents the white, hetero majority.

Be it the supermarket or the streetcar, I much prefer interacting with a police officer since there is a general acknowledgement of the ground rules.

While abuse of the elderly is indeed appalling, Gates was going for the headlines, and he got them.

Dustoff| 7.24.09 @ 3:40PM

Jeff.. Maybe you should read the arrest report (again) The officers were there for a reason. Gates was being an ass.

By the way, it's NOT his property... he's a renter
It's own by the college. Not that it matters.

Ted| 7.24.09 @ 3:48PM

As a white male, I am always amazed at those who say that only white people can be racist because blacks never have any power over white people. In that case,
I should have told my black drill sergeants at Fort Jackson back in 1973 to "Back off! You have no power over me!" Imagine how that would have went over.

Jews Shooting and Killing American Troops in Iraq
Submitted by Administrator on Fri, 05/08/2009 - 20:31
Jews can often not get their propaganda right. They’ve tried to pass the following video (↓) as that of an Iraqi insurgent or a group of insurgents shooting American troops in Iraq. The thing to note is that the video is unsettled every time there’s a shot. This is because the videocam is mounted on the gun. The Israeli company Rafael makes sophisticated video cam-mounted guns that remotely transmit the video feed to a receiver.

This video was shown by Anderson Cooper at CNN on October 18, 2006. The source was identified as ‘a representative of an unnamed insurgent leader.’ CNN even claimed that the camera used to film the shootings wasn’t mounted on the rifle, which the video easily falsifies.

How did Iraqi insurgents get a hold of such sophisticated rifles? And why hasn’t it occurred to these insurgents that if they stop shooting and blowing up American soldiers, then the Americans will leave? After all, the Americans went to Iraq in search of Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction and to free the Iraqi people of this tyrant, isn’t it?

Incidentally, the Rafael Company also makes improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that the Jews claim the insurgents are using against American troops. Go figure.

The Mossad is up to its old tricks: by way of deception thou shall do war. Mossad Jews are shooting and blowing up American soldiers in Iraq as well as blowing up Iraqis and blaming it on ethnic strife. This creates outrage among Americans, many of whom end up determined to have America defeat the ‘insurgents’; facilitates the prolonged stay of American troops in Iraq; angers American troops and prompts them to go after Iraqis, unnecessarily killing a number of them; gives Jews more time to go about slaughtering Iraqis, especially its scientists and intelligentsia, and also have fun along the way as in raping Iraqi women; and gives Jews more time to install puppets in the Iraqi government to ensure long-term Jewish control of Iraqi oil.

Dustoff and Mazzuchelli,

Take race out of the situation. I realize it was Gates who brough it in - but take the juicy headlines out of it.

If I'm going to be an ass, anywhere, I should be able to be an ass in my house, or on my porch. If I threaten a police officer with bodily harm, even in my own setting, then slap the cuffs on and march me off to jail

Gates is alone - he's acting a fool in his house, on his porch. A police officer can't let that go?

I think we're all getting to this - cooler head should have prevailed, on both sides. Both sides.

The Global or International Jewish Crime Network
Submitted by Administrator on Fri, 02/20/2009 - 04:16
‘Jewish Crime Network,’ ‘Jewish cabal’ and ‘Jewish mafia’ are not in everyday usage. The irony is that the phenomenon described affects the typical person, for the worse, on an everyday basis.

The existence of a major Jewish International Crime Network is easy to prove. Whereas one could list the evidence for numerous crimes committed by Jews, the typical skeptical reader has a limited attention span and limited time. We shall concern ourselves with major lines of evidence.

Gun Grab Legislation
The most powerful organizations behind gun grab legislation are Jewish. Why go for guns owned by the public? There can only be a few possibilities: a) misguided people may have come across some horror stories of children accidently coming across a loaded gun and killing themselves or a playmate, b) police personnel don’t want their authority undermined and c) criminals, for obvious reasons, don’t want an armed public. Which of these possibilities applies to the Jewish community? The first possibility is an emotional first response that can be taken care of by pointing out the rarity of children accidently shooting themselves, evidence that gun restrictions don’t prevent criminals from obtaining guns but prevent law abiding citizens from defending themselves and other evidence listed in the book ‘More Guns: Less Crime.’ The first possibility obviously doesn’t explain why Jewry is so relentless in pursuing gun restrictions and trying to take away people’s guns, and neither does the second. That leaves the third possibility.

Jews are so desperate to grab people’s guns that they

Liberal Reader| 7.24.09 @ 4:08PM

The Jewish Crime network ...

Because we all know how criminality and Jewishness go hand and hand.

Look ups| 7.24.09 @ 4:13PM

Jews are so desperate to grab people’s guns that they have orchestrated many shooting sprees to use as the impetus for gun grab legislation – e.g., the Port Arthur massacre and the Columbine shootings.

Hate Crimes Legislation; Suppression of Free Speech
The foremost enemy of free speech in Western societies is Jewry, usually manifesting in the behind-the-scenes work of the ADL. From the dissolution of the Roman and Classical Greek civilizations to the Renaissance, over a millennium passed with almost no progress in science and technology. Why? The Church was successful in suppressing free speech and free inquiry, and forced the people to live in superstition and ignorance. Should we not have learned our lessons about the value of free speech? Jewry can’t claim ignorance or even claim that it means well because the law that prevents homosexuals or Islam from being critiqued doesn’t prevent heterosexuals or Christianity from being disparaged. The very issue of meaning well is effectively meaningless since it should be abundantly clear that the benefits of truth about major matters outweigh the negatives… as the Bible says, the truth shall set us free (John 8:32). So why does Jewry go after free speech, so desperately? Simple…Jewry has to prevent people from exposing the criminal behaviors and crime network of the Jews.

9/11 was a Jew Job
The 9/11 ‘terrorist attacks’ were clearly planned and orchestrated by Jews, and Jews benefitted from them. 9/11 was no amateur job. The professionals who executed it didn’t just decide all of a sudden to carry out a major attack. They surely had committed major crimes before 9/11, had long-term interests in mind when planning 9/11, and have committed major crimes after 9/11.

Years ago I lived in Cambridge and know that policemen there have large egos. On the other hand, I know from personal experience that Harvard professors have huge egos. I also know that I've seen police reports that aren't the whole truth.

I don't know what happened because the police and Gates disagree on the facts. But reading the responses on this column, I can come to a conclusion -- IT IS OBVIOUS WHY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HAS SO FEW BLACKS AND HISPANICS. There is no objectivity here -- you guys automatically blame the black guy.

I could make a case that this was a mono-on-mono male testosterone ego episode. My take on it was that neither side did the right thing -- and Obama was consistent because he didn't do the right thing either.

Having suffered a similar encounter as Gates on a dark night a couple years ago and being confronted by two Cops (one that looks like the white officer in this case and the other one that looks like Barrack Obama) I know something of the momentary rage when feels one feels wronged. In my case I had done exactly what I had done for years at the same time and place (trying to find an open door and enter a public building that was locked in this case) when the two officers cut me off back at my car. I won’t go into their “probable cause or lack there of” or the long discussion I had with their LT back at the station (via back channel means) but two things did not happen after having to endure answering a check list of leading questions and being physically searched in front of my friends who arrived for the same event we were scheduled to be at. I didn’t act like an ass and refuse any of their commands. I offered my ID without being asked for it in fact. Hence I didn’t get a special new picture of self added to my widely distributed collection of same in numerous government data bases. Nothing came of the matter outside of some embarrassment on both sides of the issue. Could have turned out quit differently.

I find it reprehensible that Gate’s apologists are so willing to not look at the fact as they come out vs. doing the very same thing Barrack Obama did by running his mouth when he should have kept it shut. Gates was not on his property and there is no way the officers could have determined that any way since it was a rental. Such things take time and Gates allowed no time. The arresting officer’s “black” officer companion stands behind the arrest 100%. Gates refused two orders to “cease”. The officer (the one that looks like Barrack Obama) searching me in front of my friends went to some effort to explain “why” and was virtually apologizing to me by the time it all said and done. The white officer tried to engage me in small talk to defuse what was clearly distress on my face. I held them blame less then and now as I knew something that Gate’s apologists don’t know. They were following written procedures and they made a lot of procedural mistakes that could have gotten them killed in the blink of an eye if I turned out to be what they thought I might have been. Their LT admitted they cut me some slack of the type that could have cost them their lives and I had the means and opportunity. That encounter is still vivid in my mine but I’ve had two years to figure out what might have gone differently and keep coming up with the same answer, don’t be an ass for the sake of being an ass.

So while you Gate’s apologists keep rationalizing why the responding officers should have stepped back from this in order to not have your racist President embarrass himself on the world stage I would suggest two things for you to do before you open your mouths next time. 1) Spend 30 nights riding with your local PD in the worst part of your city or town getting to know the nice people that Cops spend 90% of the shifts dealing with. 2) Join your local PD and put your silly rationalizations into practice on your dime. A Cop was killed two blocks from my house early one morning just doing an ordinary traffic violation with a convicted murder. He violated standing department procedure; he had the convicted murder in his car when the background check came back over the air. He made an assumption that got him killed. He never heard the shot that killed him two blocks from my house. The Cop was white, the convicted murder was what 80% of this Nation’s murders are. Take that ride apologists, put your money where your mouth is and see if things work out in the real world like you think it should in your make believe world. Blink of an eye is all it takes get yourself killed or injured in a profession none of you could probably measure up to.

The Cops followed procedures established at Dept level. If you don’t like policy and procedures take it up with the ones that write it; Gates was an ass (witnesses back this up); the rest is just the Race card being played for political purposes.

I'm sure Gates has an oversized ego and I'm sure Crowley is not a racist, but I'm sure glad most of the commenters to this article weren't the cop answering that call, because there's an awful lot of pent-up racial animus reflected on this web page, and I'm sure Gates and other African-Americans have been on the receiving end of such animus in the not so distant past.

The fact remains, it's hard for many people to fathom, including this white guy who respects cops, (1) why the officer, by his own admission, requested that Gates step outside on his porch, and (2) what a short, slightly-built, sober, well-spoken man of 58 could have done to warrant being cuffed and taken down to the station in broad daylight from his own residence in a quiet, residential neighborhood after the officer had established to his own satisfaction that the man was properly in his own home.

Liberal Reader| 7.24.09 @ 7:24PM

Just so long as we're clear here: Gates was IN HIS OWN HOME.

Many people around here profess to love the Constitution. Article 4 anyone?

Sure, Gates over-reacted. Sure, he should have been more measured.

But the man, was in his OWN KITCHEN. He doesn't HAVE to watch his words. He doesn't HAVE to be nice.

Man's home is his castle. Case closed.

Liberal Reader| 7.24.09 @ 7:27PM

The fact that conservatives aren't JUMPING to defend Gates -- when obviously they would if he were white -- suggests something pretty ugly going on here.

I mean Jesus. Think about it. He was in his own house; he showed ID. How does he end up in handcuffs?

maureenS| 7.24.09 @ 7:44PM

Why yes, it's striking that our president, a man who spent years listening to Rev. Wright in church, immediately singled out the cops for acting "stupidly."

Wake up, folks.

Thom| 7.24.09 @ 8:02PM

" man was properly in his own home."
" Gates was IN HIS OWN HOME."

No he wasn't and it has no material bearing in this matter since a horde of people have been arrested in their "homes" over simple accusations of criminal behavior like domestic violence. Try looking up police policy and procedures there before you open your mouth on this. The entire PD there is not going to go down on this for a “stupid” cop which is the rationale being offered here.

"I mean Jesus."

Jesus would have been arrested had he acted as Gates did but he wouldn't have been crucified and neither was Gates. What Gates and you apologists are doing is using a broad brush to crucify LE and the PD there in particular because you are blatantly ignorance of Police procedures and Police power that has been in effect for over a century. It’s a little late to bring up that 4th amendment given all the other amendments that you trash on a regular basis. Get over it, he acted belligerent and made an ass of him self for no rational purpose if such a rational purpose could possibility even exist. If you have a “beef” take it up with the PD there and see how far that gets you.

I’ve got no dog in this fight and have been on the receiving end but I have something that Henry Louis Gates doesn’t have an ounce of, common sense.

Serious Crime & Fraud in USA| 7.24.09 @ 8:07PM

August 8, 2005, Garri Grigorian, a 43-year-old Russian living in Sandy, Utah, was sentenced to 51 months imprisonment and ordered to pay $17.42 million in restitution to the Russian government for his role in laundering over $130 million on behalf of Moscow-based Intellect Bank and its customers through bank accounts located in Sandy, Utah.”

Marat Balagula received an 8-year sentence for credit card fraud and, in 1992, an additional ten years for evading federal taxes on the sale of four million gallons of gasoline. When questioned, he was not forthcoming regarding Russian mob activity in the U.S. ” No,” he insisted, “there is no such thing as the Russian Mafiya. Two or three friends hang out together. That’s a Mafiya?”

At first, investigators recognized Russian crime as a growing problem, but not an organized one. Food stamp scams and the like were treated as isolated cases committed by street criminals, who were not mobbed-up in mafia-like relationships. Further investigations were to reveal that the Brighton Beach boys did in fact constitute a criminal enterprise, and had corrupted the local cops who were on their payrolls so that were able to act freely and openly without threat of arrest. “Cops in cheap suits who looked like gangsters worked the door as bouncers and sat at the front tables in Russian mob joints.”

”Nobody takes the Russian Jewish mob seriously,” said a NYPD detective. “The lack of interest of law enforcement has given them time to grow.” A major roadblock was the super sensitivity to the Jewish aspect of émigré crime. The Jewish leaders worried that the resulting negative publicity from acknowledging the existence of Russian Jewish mobsters, of which there were an estimated 5000 in the New York metro region, would foster a wave of anti-Semitism.

“The Mafiya dominates Russia, and has Eastern Europe in a bear hug. It is also turning Western Europe into its financial satrapy, and the Caribbean and Latin America have quickly become sandy playpens for coke and weapons’ deals with Colombian drug lords. There are few nations where the Russian mob does not hold some influence, making efforts to combat it ever more difficult.”

I guess it's a teachable moment to have all these crackpot Nazis posting on the site today: perhaps we can both keep in mind just how sane and decent most people -- liberal and conservative -- are.

But your reasoning is not very convincing. First, I haven't trashed any amendments at all. Generalize much?

Second, it makes a great deal of difference that Gates was in his home. He was NOT beating his wife. He was cussing out police officers who were treating him like a criminal in his own home.

Like I said, he probably should have "sirred" the cops and gotten the whole thing over with.

But he didn't.

Obviously -- don't you people even READ these news stories??? -- he didn't deserve to get arrested: the police dropped the charges and said it was an unfortunate misunderstanding.

Liberal-Poster, since one person can post under any anonymous handle they choose as many times as they please by your standards sites like DailyKos and MoreOn would disappear if we applied your idea of a standard of posting…..

It is my belief that the Democratic purpose is served best when it is done in the bright sun light of day and not from behind anonymous names, back room deals and secret ballots, etc. The secret ballot and similarly the ability to make comments from behind a wall of secrecy may be a noble thought on the surface but in practice it ultimately is the biggest single source of fraud in a Democracy. Even criminal defendants get to face their accusers and a unanimous ruling of a jury doesn’t leave any wiggle room without regard to who is responsible for their vote to convict. Same thing with what people (or a single person) using multiple anonymous handles here. It’s a kind of fraud and it stands to reason most of those posting the idiotic stuff here would not do it if their true identity was tractable and say known to their relatives. Most of this would disappear if true identities were tied to what people post. Game for that Liberal-Reader?

“he didn't deserve to get arrested” Yes he did. He became belligerent and created a public disturbance after having been told twice to stop. Playing the race card right off the bat and calling this particular Cop a racist is the sign of a true idiot. If you have a problem with the “system” take it up with the system. I have no dog in this fight.

“A man has the right to be secure in his person and in his own home.” The Constitution says one has the right to be secure from unreasonable search and seizures, safe in one’s papers, etc things like that. The castle rule is central to that for sure but as I’ve already said, you are about 100 too late on that. Court ruling after court ruling has striped away the broad definition of what that was intended to protect. No court in the land will stand behind a concept that says a man can create a public disturbance and be safe from arrest simply because it is his property. Gates was in his home not in his property. I can't hide in my pup tent and tell the Cops I'm not coming out.... Inside or outside the house is still property for this purpose. If you don’t agree with that then crank up a 500 watt home stereo system at 2:00 AM in your neighborhood on a week night and discover your own teachable moment. The Cops will come on your property; they will ask you to turn it off or down so they can’t hear it beyond your “property” and they will come into your home and arrest you and hall you off to jail if you do not. After all is said and done they may even drop the charges but that does not mean you didn’t do anything wrong. Cops understand teachable moments too and Gates got his for basically no cost beyond public embarrassment which I think he richly deserves. He is certainly free to seek legal recourse as is the Cop in this matter. Gates will lose and nothing good will come out of him proving beyond any doubt he is an ass.

Liberal Reader| 7.25.09 @ 12:37AM

Thom --

You keep saying he caused a "public disturbance," apparently unaware of the irony: he was not in "public," he was in his house.

I agree he acted foolishly, although I honestly don't know how well mannered I'd be in his position.

I guess I'm also a little puzzled by the contradictions being aired out here.

A conservative will explode with rage if someone proposes a nickel tax increase to pay for the war in the Middle East: the state, he will inform us, in between spasms, has no business interfering with our lives.

Yet here is a man dragged from his property in cuffs and taken off to jail for the crime of being insufficiently subservient to an officer of the state.

Black men, it seems, are not to accorded the hysterical over-reactions with which white men are privileged when they feel the state has gone too far. Black men should know their place and be respectful. If the state over-reaches, if the state interferes too much in his private affairs, the black man should file a formal complaint, in triplicate, and wait his turn in line like a good boy.

White men, on the other hand, take to the airwaves with any perceived inconvenience placed upon them by the state. The DMV or sensible regulations to protect drinking water are the Two Horsemen of the Apocalypse, ushering in an age of Totalitarian Domination by Big Brother.

Liberty is something many people yelp for when they feel limitations upon their own desires or preferences being enforced: but often, too, they can only feel free if they know some other class of people are not.

Bill Sullivan| 7.25.09 @ 12:52AM

Police have the guns and the authority, but they undermine the trust we need to have in them when they force submission under threat of arrest. A cop who is secure in his own manhood should be above this kind of pettiness. I absolutely dispute the logic of a world where all that matters is that gun and the power to arrest. "The important thing was he had the gun and the legal authority and he was going to win the argument," says Mr. Tucker. Well, seriously, is that how they teach it at the police academy? 'Remember, nobody can get the best of you, by golly, because you've got a gun and all the power and nothing will ever happen if the odd disorderly conduct charge gets dismissed.' Wouldn't want your manhood threatened, after all. Well, to me, a good cop knows the law (unlike the subway incident, apparently) and knows how to defuse rather than escalate a situation. He looked to rub Gates' nose in it, and managed, perhaps, to do it to one of the relatively few people capable of a real response. The cop blew it when he didn't walk away, and it's kind of surprising to see this conversation taking such a partisan shape. Why would conservatives be so blase about the abuse of authority? Are these apologists for the police spending 5 seconds to ask themselves what they'd feel like under these circumstances? Everybody gets hysterical about a mythical attempt to impose new gun control laws, but it's ok to let this silly incident get out of hand?!? I have respect for the police, but that's respect that is earned by trust. And if I ever have to wonder if the police are on my side, that trust is gone. This is America, dammit.

What can you say| 7.25.09 @ 7:30AM

The only thing wrong here is you all assume the police "Crowley" is telling the truth. I would bet your first born his story is a lie.
Every time he tells his story it is different. The police said he new it would raise a stink but I am going show this black man that think he is something that I can take his ass to jail cause I'se the police.
So Crowley wanted to rasie some stink.

I didn't see a sign on Gates that read: This is my home. I live here.

What Can You Say: you have major white guilt.

John Navratil| 7.25.09 @ 9:56AM

Why is race anything by a sideshow? If reports are to be believed, Gates injected it in his invective. He could have been just as abusive to Crowley without injecting race or even being black.

The problem I have here is that two grown men behaved badly. Gates was, as I would have been, indignant at being challenged in his own home. He could have defused the situation, but so also could Crowley. Once a professional police officer, who had every right and responsibility to investigate a possible burglary, determined what the situation was he should have left. He might even have imparted a little wisdom about value of a police force protecting Gate's property. Sometimes it is not a career, it is just a job. The man we entrust with the power to deprive others of their liberty is held to a higher standard.

On first take, it seemed like 'Professor' Gates was staging a race hustler incident not unlike something 'Reverend' Sharpton would cause.

As the facts dribble out though, the only racial arson here was committed by the presiDENT. As far as Gates went, this exchange was mainly about someone whose self-exalted status was being questioned by a mere public servant. This fellow could not contain his 'friend of the presiDENT,' respectee of Oprah, preppy dressin', movin' on up, Harvard proFESSor emminence.

Hopefully it will result in higher (positive) professional visibility for officer Crowley and diminished respect in the media world for the sanctimonious, pompous leftist Gates.

But then, Prof Gates teaches at Harvard. Common sense, you know.
But I have another idea, and bear with me please. Maybe Prof Gates, who is very clever, had one of his friends call in this report, hoping that a white policeman would show up. He could create a drama, complete with pictures, and use it in a documentary! What do you think?

Wondercat| 7.25.09 @ 3:13PM

Hi, Lib'rul Reader. Gotta go with Thom on this one, though you make many good points.

If a police officer is in hot pursuit of a witnessed crime, or has good reason to believe that a crime is taking place, then -- well, then the home = castle business is swept aside.

And, don't you know, it's the cop who in the heat of the moment is accorded a LOT of leeway to decide what constitutes "good reason".

Residence-specific ID doesn't cut it if the situation evokes suspicion. I've posted elsewhere on this site two examples -- one involves presenting faked ID, which might be worth generating if the burglary haul will be substantial enough. The other I present again below.

"My wife / partner, via a protection order, has recently had me evicted. She is on the floor of an upstairs closet, bloodied, bound, and gagged. Cop arrives for report of break-in. I flash my (ex)-residence - specific ID, the cop leaves…."

Cool, calm behavior defuses suspicion. Rage inflames it. Rage prompts, in the officer being raged at, the thought, "Maybe I'd better run a check on this guy." And to run that check through radiotelephone, via the station house, can mean quite a lot of time during which the officer wants to keep the person being checked in direct sight.

Was Gates giving Sgt. Crowley that time, or was he yelling "Yo' mama!" at him? If the latter, then Sgt. Crowley, increasingly suspicious that Gates had something to hide, may have sighed to himself and said, If Gates won't let me do my job, it's time to get him out of my face.

And then the handcuffs went on.

Does the W E B DuBois Institute offer a course called, "In the Belly of the Fascist Beast: Living as a Black Man in AmeriKKKa 101"? One that offers practical instruction, such as, "Say nothing to a cop except 'Yes, officer' and 'I'm sorry, officer'"? It does? Sounds as if Prof Gates needs to audit a few sessions.

Liberal Reader| 7.25.09 @ 3:27PM

Wondercat --

You make some fine points as well, but I guess questions still remain for me.

The whole conservative ethos -- the conservative style of political debate and protest -- is one of outrage. The rhetorical register is one of "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

Any government action, large or small, is likely to provoke reactionary rage, as though the imposition of a building regulation or an additional gas tax were generated from the Terrible Turbines of the Dark Satanic Mills.

The right wing radio screeches, booms, and hollers 16 hours a day about the invasion of the government into the private sector and into our private lives. We are told by heaving, fist-pounding prophets of resentment and fury that Obama is a totalitarian and a fascist because he forced the resignation of a bank executive.

These are -- by the way -- issues on which conservatives have important, strong arguments to make. When they prevail upon themselves to sit still and talk in measured tones, they often win the day.

And so I guess what you are saying is that Gates should have behaved himself. He should have said, "Yes sir," and "I'm sorry, sir," and then he should have filed a complaint following proper channels. Fair enough.

But here was a man who was in fact on his own property. It wasn't a debate on radio between the claims of the private and the public sector: an agent of the government, armed, was on his property, and he cuffed him for his mode of verbal protest. No one accuses the elderly Gates (he walks with a cane and is sickly) of menacing the police; no one accuses him of threatening them.

It just seems to me that conservatives are energized and delighted by a white man's invective and hypberbole on the radio or at some ghastly rally, but a black man refusing to be deferential enough on his own property draws their ire.

Kearney| 7.25.09 @ 3:28PM

If racism went away, the three saddest people in the country would be Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Henry Gates. They all make their living hyping racial issues.

Liberal Reader| 7.25.09 @ 5:48PM

Well, Kearney, congratulations. You manage to type correctly an oft-repeated bromide.

Do you ever stop to wonder whether "racism" might really have actual consequences other than whatever career benefits it confers upon Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton?

John Navratil| 7.25.09 @ 6:57PM

Wondercat,

Yes you could of course be in the house with ID AND a restraining order compelling you not to be there. You could also be running a male prostitution ring, making ricin, printing child pornography or cooking meth.

The officer has his eye and ears and may legitimately follow you in to ensure that you, or someone else isn't under any duress. That is NOT and open invitation to begin a search (which Crowley didn't do).

The fact that a criminal activity could have an innocent face does not mean that all innocent faces are suspicious. Similarly, a smooth talker isn't necessarily innocent. Certainly calling an officer a racist is inflamatory, but it, in no way, suggests there is any other crime going on. By your logic, once the officer was called he had carte blanche to investigate whatever he wanted to. Obviously the man was agitated... possibly on drugs... let's have a cavity search. I don't think so!

As I said before, Gates behaved badly and could have made things a lot easier on himself, but if a man can't be and arrogant bigot in his own house, we are all in trouble.

I tend to agree that Gates "behaved badly," but I also question this surmise.

Remember, this incident took place in broad daylight. Is this the usual hour for break-ins?

Gates was arrested on his own property for the crime of not speaking respectfully to a police officer.

Perhaps Gates should have been more polite, but that doesn't explain the angry reaction against him on this website. I think we all know what that's about.

David Gonzalez| 7.25.09 @ 8:12PM

A *bunch* of decades ago, I was on patrol in a Florida city. There was a public disorder. I responded. An elderly white woman was contending that a black man attempted to rape her. I pulled the (impeccably-dressed) black man aside and asked for some ID. He produced a driver's licence and a hospital card identifying him as a physician/surgeon. He told me that he had made eye contact with the matron and had bade her a good morning. She began screaming. \

Sizing up the situation, I (sotto voce) asked him to play along with me. I took him by the elbow and led him to my vehicle, opend the back door, and placed him inside. As I drove away, I apologized for any humiliation I had caused him and explained that I was trying to extricate both of us from a hostile situation. I drove him to the hospital where he worked, opened the back door for him, and offered my hand---which he took warmly.

Amazingly I find myself agreeing with lib reader, I thought the day would never come. Gates may be a jackass but that is not illegal. Arresting a man for telling off a police officer while comitting no crime is an abuse of authority. I know I could expect the same thing if I told a cop to go to hell, but that doesn't make it right. I know I'm in the minority here, but libertarians are in the republican party.

shaggydave| 7.25.09 @ 11:23PM

However I feel lib reader does many of the commenters here a disservice when he accuses them of racism. Their defense of Crowley stems from a "law-and-order" conservative's nature to side with police and from the fact that Gates is an ass. Their condemnation of Gates stems from a sort of populism you see in the republican party of today where elites (such as Harvard professors) are held in contempt because of a "They think they're better than we are! Who do they are!" kind of mindset. Their condemnation of Gates also springs from the fact that Gates is an ass. I havn't seen any great deal of racism on this site, and I read here daily even if I don't often post.

steve| 7.25.09 @ 11:24PM

When God invented the sphincter, He named it Gates.

shaggydave| 7.25.09 @ 11:24PM

"Who do they THINK they are?" kind of mind set.

Apologies

Liberal Reader| 7.26.09 @ 12:22AM

Well, Shaggydave, you might examine Steve's post directly above, or the dozens of posts that refer to Gates as all kinds of things he's not.

The animosity is unbelievable towards this man. People are calling him a "bigot" and a "racist" even, which is just pathologically idiotic.

Gates, by the way, is a very mild, very polite, very learned civilized man. He's married to a white woman, so people here who are convinced he hates white people may want to rethink that. He has three children with his white wife.

Anyway -- I'm not going to try to defend the notion that some of the posts above are racist.

Some are not racist, that's for sure. And of course every criticism of Gates is not racist. I repeatedly wrote above that I thought Gates probably could and should have behaved differently.

You should probably scroll up and read a few more of these posts.

Often people at the site respond to ANY claim of racism with a dismayed cry of indignant wonder. Or, they heave a world-weary sigh, and say: "There he goes again, of course, crying 'racist' just because we criticize a black guy."

Well, in fact, there are racist people out there, and I refuse not to say anything about it because many white people are offended or made anxious by the discussion.

shaggydave| 7.26.09 @ 1:00AM

Steve called him a sphincter, I called him an ass, the only difference is that he was more specific.
There are a great many racist people out there, this is true. They are a minority in the general population and I would surmise a minority here. The jew haters are irritating but this seems to be a recent development and other posters have expressed their disdain for such antisemitism. It is only natural for people to be called racist when they are not. There are some blacks like Sharpton and Jackson who use accusations of racism as a shield and it is easy to lump Gates in with this crowd based on what he said to the police as they investigated the "break-in." I can't say for myself as I have never read anything he wrote but such an assumption is easy to make.
"I refuse not to say anything about it because many white people are offended or made anxious by the discussion. "
You can say what you will, I just don't feel the criticism of Gates springs from the melanin content of his epidermis.

shaggydave| 7.26.09 @ 1:02AM

It is only natural for people to dislike to be called racist when they are not.

Not my night, apparently.
Apologies.

Bonnie L| 7.26.09 @ 1:05AM

Seems like the outcome was entirely in Gates' control. It would have been so easy and sensible for this gentle person to have responded in a gentlemanly manner to the public servent who showed up at his door to investigate a report of a possible break-in. A smile, a little laughter and a motion to the officer, "Come in, come in, come in, officer. We had to push that door so hard we could have fallen in! Here is my ID, it's my home and I'm safe. No one broke in... I'm glad I have a neighbor who notices things out of order because my house was broken into recently!"

Why couldn't that have happened? Give me one good damn reason why he couldn't have responded as a gentleman? Would Gates have blasted off if the officer had been black? What a disgrace and a stinking, miserable example to any other American citizen, old or young, who ever has a police officer come to his door for any reason. And to think that they put their lives on the line all the time for arrogant, short-sighted people in an ordinary day.

shaggydave| 7.26.09 @ 1:38AM

The outcome is not entirely in Gates' control when "disorderly conduct" laws allow police officers to arrest people and find a reason later.
The issue (in my eyes) is not Gates' behavior but the fact that he was arrested even though he had committed no crime. Should he have responded differently? I would have. Did he do anything to warrant an arrest? No, in a free society telling off a police officer should not be illegal. We shouldn't have to kiss their ass just because they wear a badge. They get paid through our taxes, don't forget this.

conservative| 7.26.09 @ 9:52AM

Dear Shaggydave,
I agree being an AS* in not a crime and if it was there would be more people spending the night in jail. (me on more than one occasion) - that being said, Mr Gates was/is and racist and he showed his as* for no reason.
He has been on national tv calling the cop rouge and a racist.
He set a bad example for young men that may look up him, and that example may land them in trouble or worse at the hands of a truly rouge cop.
I am a good natured person and see myself in others, just as Mr. Gates see himself in others.
Its hard to be the black victim when you are living the upper crust lifestyle, but he is making his best effort.

Richard Baker| 7.26.09 @ 10:42AM

Shaggydave:
So screaming and yelling at quarter to one in the morning isn't disorderly conduct? I suggest you read up on what constitutes that offense. If that's no big deal then your neighborhood must be a hoot in which to live. White liberal guilt is a wonder to behold.

M. T. Wallitt| 7.26.09 @ 11:43AM

Yeah, Jew-haters, why not crawl ALL the way out from under your rock and tell us what your solution is to what you probably call "the Jewish problem"? Is it different from Hitler's, or are you too busy fantasizing about child molestation to have given it much thought? Put all of your cards on the table.

Liberal Reader| 7.26.09 @ 12:09PM

Bonnie --

You claim that "Gates was in control." You seem like a decent person: maybe you've never dealt with police.

In fact, and for good reason, when the police arrive, THEY are in control. That's how it works. They've got the guns; they've got the cuffs. They assert control over any situation they enter -- and, the world being what it is, they'd be crazy not to.

The problem is that at some point the police had to have realized their error. Gates had lost his temper -- is there anyone here who has never lost his temper? -- and probably was acting abit foolishly.

Still, police are trained to look beyond this sort of thing. They deal with people who have lost their tempers all the time, and we as a society trust them to control theirs.

These police officers did not sufficiently control their own feelings -- of pride, or whatever.

But it's also not as if they over-reacted in some unforgiveable terrible way, either. Gates had to cool his heels in jail.

It seems to me both parties will live.

Liberal Reader| 7.26.09 @ 12:13PM

The real problem I see is with the reactionary impulse to brand any black person or minority as "racist" or "bigoted" if they claim they are the victim of racism.

It is a weird habit of reactionary rhetoric: the people with the guns and the power become the "victims" of those who are weaker.

All liberal thought in the western tradition -- which is to say, all enlightened political thought concerned with human rights and human liberty -- works against this reactionary tendency. It is a basic, terrifying fascistic impulse in all modern societies.

Behind The Bible Fraud -
What Was The Church
Trying To Hide?

When I first spoke to a close Christian friend of mine about the publishing of Tony Bushby's The Bible Fraud, her reaction was one that many Christians have expressed, and one that made me aghast. She didn't want the book available because it would "persuade them away from the Bible and the word of God." Further discussions with her and many other Christians around the world about The Bible Fraud all result in the Bible being quoted as the ultimate reference for the apparent "words of God," and therefore the basis for their arguments. The problem lies in that they believe the Bible is infallible.

If we examine the oldest known Bible to date, the "Sinai Bible" housed in the British Museum (I believe that, during his many years of research, Tony had a private viewing of this priceless book), we find a staggering 14,800 differences from today's Bible and yet it still remains the word of God?

As Tony points out, the history of our 'genuine' Bibles is a convoluted one. Firstly we cannot be sure that we have the full version as it was originally intended. In 1415 the Church of Rome took an extraordinary step to destroy all knowledge of two second century Jewish books that it said contained the true name of Jesus Christ. The Antipope Benedict XIII firstly singled out for condemnation a secret Latin treatise called "Mar Yesu" and then issued instructions to destroy all copies of the book of Elxai. The Rabbinic fraternity once held the destroyed manuscripts with great reverence for they were comprehensive original records reporting the life of Rabbi Jesus.

Later, Pope Alexander VI ordered all copies of the Talmud destroyed, with the Spanish Grand Inquisitor Tomas de Torquemada (1420-98) responsible for the elimination of 6,000 volumes at Salamanca alone.

Solomon Romano (1554) also burnt many thousands of Hebrew scrolls and, in 1559, every Hebrew book in the city of Prague was confiscated. The mass destruction of Jewish books included hundreds of copies of the Old Testament and caused the irretrievable loss of many original handwritten documents.

The oldest text of the Old Testament that survived, before the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls" was said to be the Bodleian Codex (Oxford), which was dated to circa 1100 AD. In an attempt by the church to remove damaging Rabbinic information about Jesus Christ from the face of the earth, the Inquisition burnt 12,000 volumes of the Talmud.

In 1607, forty-seven men (some records say fifty four) took two years and nine months to re-write the Bible and make it ready for press. It was, by the order of King James, issued with a set of personal 'rules' the translators were to follow. Upon its completion in 1609, it was handed over to the King James for his final approval. However, "It was self evident that James was not competent to check their work and edit it, so he passed the manuscripts onto the greatest genius of all time... Sir Francis Bacon"

The first English language manuscripts of the Bible remained in Bacon's possession for nearly a year. During that time ... "he hammered the various styles of the translators into the unity, rhythm, and music of Shakespearean prose, wrote the prefaces and created the whole scheme of the Authorized Version. At the completion of the editing, King James ordered a 'dedication to the King' to be drawn up and included in the opening pages. He also wanted the phrase 'Appointed to be read in the churches' to appear on the title page.

The King James Bible is considered by many today to be the 'original' Bible and therefore 'genuine' and all later revisions simply counterfeits forged by 'higher critics'. Others think the King James Bible is 'authentic' and 'authorized' and presents the original words of the authors as translated into English from the 'original' Greek texts. However, as Tony points out, the 'original' Greek text was not written until around the mid fourth century and was a revised edition of writings compiled decades earlier in Aramaic and Hebrew. Those earlier documents no longer exist and the Bibles we have today are five linguistic removes from the first bibles written. What was written in the 'original originals' is quite unknown. It is important to remember that the words 'authorized' and 'original', as applied to the Bible do not mean 'genuine', 'authentic' or 'true'.

By the early third century, it became well noted that a problem was occurring . politics! In 251AD, the number of Presbyter's (roving orator or priest) writings had increased dramatically and bitter arguments raged between opposing factions about their conflicting stories. According to Presbyter Albius Theodoret (circa 255), there were "more than two hundred" variant gospels in use in his time. In 313, groups of Presbyters and Biscops (Bishops) violently clashed over the variations in their writings and "altar was set against altar" in competing for an audience and territory.

When Emperor Constantine conquered the East in 324, he sent his Spanish religious advisor, Osius of Cordoba, to Alexandria with letters to several Biscops exhorting them to make peace among their own. But the mission failed and Constantine, probably at the suggestions of Osius, then issued a decree commanding all Presbyters and their subordinates "be mounted on asses, mules and horses belonging to the public and travel to the city of Nicaea" in the Roman province of Bithymia, the country of Asia. The Presbyters were instructed by the Emperor to bring with them the manuscripts from which they orated to the rabble (that's us!) "wrapped and bound in leather".

Constantine saw in this developing system of belief the opportunity to make a combined state religion and protect it by law. The first general church council was thus convened and the year was 325.

On 21 June, the day of the Summer Solstice, (and under those cult conditions) a total of 2048 "presbyters, deacons, sub-deacons, acolytes and exorcists" gathered at Nicaea to decide what Christianity really was, what it would be, what writings were to be used and who was to be it's God.

Ancient church evidence established that a new 'god' was to be approved by the Roman Emperor and an earlier attempt (circa 210) to deify either Judas Khrestus or his twin brother Rabbi Jesus (or somebody else) had been 'declined'. Therefore, as late as 325, the Christian religion did not have an official god.

After a long and bitter debate, a vote was finally taken and it was with a majority show of hands that Judas Khrestus and Rabbi Jesus both became God (161votes for and 157 votes against). The Emperor effectively joined elements of the two individual life stories of the twin brothers into a singular creation. The doctrine of the Celtic / British church of the west was democratically attached to the Presbyters stories of the east.

A deification ceremony was then performed 'Apotheosis'. Thus the deified ones were then called 'saviours' and looked upon as gods. Temples, altars, and images with attributes of divinity were then erected and public holidays proclaimed on their birthdays.

Following the original example set by the deification of Caesar, their funerals were dramatized as the scene of their resurrection and immortality. All these godly attributes passed as a legal right to Emperor Constantine's new deity, Jesus Christ.

The Emperor then instructed Bishop Eusebius to compile a uniform collection of new writings "bound together as one" using the stories from the large collection of Presbyters as his reference source. Eusebius was to arrange for the production of "fifty sumptuous copies ... to be written on parchment in a legible manner, and in a convenient portable form, by professional scribes thoroughly accomplished in the art". This was the first mention of finished copies of a Christian 'New Testament' in the history of mankind.

As one can imagine, to condense the real life of the Jesus Christ, the Church and His teachings with supporting evidence into a short article is very difficult. It is therefore wise for those who wish to have supportable evidence to read and study Tony Bushby's epic work, The Bible Fraud, along with it's detailed blood lines (family trees) and over 869 references. (see www.thebiblefraud.com)

However, attempting to summarize what Tony has written..... in 325 AD, the first Christian council was called at Nicaea to bring the stories of twin brothers, Jesus 'the Rabbi' and Judas Khrestus into one deity that we now know as Jesus Christ. Tony says they were not born of virgin birth but to Nabatean Arab Mariamne Herod (now known as the Virgin Mary) and fathered by Tiberius ben Panthera, a Roman Centurion. The brothers were raised in the Essene community and became Khrists of their faith. Rabbi Jesus later was initiated in Egypt at the highest of levels similar to the 33rd degree of Freemasonry of which many Prime ministers and Presidents around the world today are members. He then later married three wives, one of whom we know as a Mary Magdalene, a Druidic Princess, stole the Torah from the temple and moved to Lud, now London.

Tony believes the reason Jesus stole the Torah was that he said it contained "a very special secret", which he was going to reveal that secret to the world. He was stoned to death and the Torah taken from him before he could.

The elder brother, Judas Khrestus, with his "Khrestian" followers conspired to take the throne of Rome, his royal birthright, and was captured, tried, and was sentenced to be crucified. (The "Khrestians" and the Essenic army, the Nazarenes, would today be likened to terrorists.) At the trial, Judas exercised his royal birthright to have a replacement in Simon of Cyrene (Luke 23:41) and then was sold as a slave to live out his days as a carpenter in India.

Rabbi Jesus spent a considerable amount of time at the Palace of the British in Rome and sometime around 48 AD, he left for Egypt to pursue his greatest esoteric goal. The spiritual knowledge from his secret education in the Essene and Druid movements was soon to be elevated to the highest level possible - initiation into the innermost rite of the Egyptian temples.

It was probable that Rabbi Jesus' earlier initiation into both the Essene and Druid schools played a major part in his acceptance into the Egyptian school. The Druids could claim a very early origin and the essence of their wisdom was also that of the Essenes. In the case of the Essenes, it is possible to show that their movement was specifically established to preserve secret information, for they knew and used the sacred writing of the Initiates. The full meaning of the point being made by Bushby is that in the case of all Secret Schools, the inner and ultimate Mystery was revealed only to a High Initiate.

Those who were initiated into the Ancient mysteries took a solemn oath never to reveal what had passed within the sacred walls. Every year only a comparatively few Egyptian initiations were conducted, and the number of persons who knew their secrets was never at any time large. The initiations always took place with the onset of darkness and the candidate was entranced for periods of varying length, depending upon the level of the degree for which he had entered.

The first initiatory step involved a forty-day procedure that basically involved purification, not only in physical form, but dissolving all tendencies to evil thoughts, purifying the mind as well. It appears that he would have fasted, alternatively on vegetables, juices and very special herbal concoctions.

The New Testament recorded that this happened to Rabbi Jesus who "was led into the desert.... and he fasted forty days and forty nights" (Matt. 4:1-2).

This trial period involved more than just fasting. During the forty days and nights' ordeal, Tony says the candidate was required to study astronomical charts to supplement his skills in astronomy and memorize charts of the heavens. They were also given a particular ritual from which to memorize certain passwords, secret signs and handclasps, skills that are still practiced to this day in Freemasonry.

These initiations were not limited to Egypt. The ancient civilizations inherited these Mysteries from a remote antiquity and they constituted part of a primitive revelation from the gods to the human race. Almost every people of pre-Christian times possessed its institution and tradition of the mysteries. The Romans, the Druids of Britain, the Greeks, the Cretans, the Syrians, the Hindus, the Persians, the Maya and the American Indians, among others, had corresponding temples and rites with a system of graduated illuminations for the initiates.

The modern world knows little of these ancient rites yet they were conducted in a huge variety of buildings the world over.

Fraud in the Bible
or
It Sucks That You Don't Know Hebrew, Greek or Aramaic
http://www.mksmith.org/

What is Pious Fraud?

Pious fraud was a common technique employed by early Christian writers to make a point. Their intention was to convert anyone and everyone by any means available. One of the more persuasive methods was to write a text and falsely tell others that it was written in first person. For example, the four canonized gospel tales were not written by Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. That has been a well known fact for about 200 years. And to this day, no one knows who the gospel stories were written by. These texts are perfect examples of pious fraud. Pious fraud is the foundation of the deception known as Christianity and it continues to this day.

During the first couple of centuries of the Common Era the early Christian priest craft, which would eventually become the early Catholic fathers, were in the process of assimilating religions from all over Europe. Ultimately the new religion become known as the Christian religion, or more accurately The Catholic Church. The Bible was put together by hundreds of people who were either at the head of the fraud or were pawns in its assembly. Once the original languages were translated into Latin, it was only a matter of time before the original language nuances could be discarded. Ever wonder why it was punishable by death to read the Bible during the Middle Ages? Punishable by death by the common folk to read it, that is. Well, the reason was that the priest craft was well aware of the errors, inconsistencies and flat-out lies that riddled the Bible. If the common man found out, it could have been the death of the Church's authority, power and control over the masses. And since the original languages are rarely, if ever, used by those who read the Bible (well, those who actually READ it), the fraud is perpetuated.

When a pious fraud is knowingly perpetuated in the name of power and money, you have deception. Remember, 1700-2000 years ago, when these texts were being assembled into a 'new testament', the vast majority of humanity was illiterate. Science was not known. Demons rules the world. Anything could be put forth and said to be 'absolute truth' when it was in fact, completely fraudulent.

What is the implication of this? The implication is self-evident. The story of Genesis, that Christian proselytizers love to advance (althou it is part of the much older Jewish texts), is a complete and utter forgery. In that story we are led to believe that there was a single god who created the earth, etc. in 6 days. Not only has science proven the timeline to be completely false, the religious aspect is a complete fabrication. At the time that the Genesis story was supposed to have been written the Hebrew people were not monotheistic. That's history. They believed in many gods and Genesis proves it. The story actually goes back to before the Hebrews were a distinct people-it is not Hebrew in origin.

Pious Fraud in Translation

Let's take a look at the very first words of the book of Genesis. Note very carefully that the Hebrew culture, at the time of this writing, was not monotheistic, but rather, polytheistic. Will your priest, minister or preacher tell you that? No. But you can find out for yourself with a simple dictionary.

The Hebrew word for God is el; the plural is elohim, gods. What is the first sentence in the Bible?

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Gen. 1:1).

Here is Genesis 1:1 in Hebrew (transliterated into the Latin alphabet, of course):

"Bereshith bara elohim," etc.,

"In-beginning created (the) gods (the) heavens and (the) earth."

In the same chapter the word "elohim" (gods) is used thirty times., Those gods are the ones who created the 'universe' in 6 days.

To clarify, here is the translation of the Hebrew text of Genesis 1. Notice how Jewish and Christian 'fathers' don't bother to tell you what the original text says. They would like you to believe that a single god created everything. But, they messed up big time and actually translated it properly. In plain English, the translation reads 'let us make man in our image':

Here are three examples of the Hebrew plural gods mentioned in Genesis: 1. "And-said elohim (gods), let-US-make man (adam) in-image-OUR, after-likeness-OUR" (1:26).

2. And when "adam" had eaten of the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge, "the Lord God" said, "Behold, the-man has become like one of US, to know good and evil" (3:27).

3. And when the Tower of Babel was being built: "The Lord [Heb. Yahveh] said ... Come, let US go down," etc.

Elohim

When speaking of the Hebrew deity, Yahveh, elohim, (gods) is used in the Hebrew texts, The plural elohim is used 2570 times. It is always falsely translated to the singular "God", thus falsely making us believe that this text was written at a time when the Hebrew people were monothestic, when it clearly is the case (written at least 2570 times, no less!) that they WERE NOT.

In the three Genesis verses above, there are three different designations of the Hebrew deity or deities: elohim, (gods), falsely translated "God":

Lord God (Heb. Yahveh-elohim); and Lord (Heb. Yahveh). Yahveh is the proper name of the Hebrew God, which, in English, is Jehovah.

Yahveh-elohim is a Hebrew "construct-form" which is translated to "Yahveh-of-the-gods." Invariably these personal names were falsely translated "Lord" and "Lord God," respectively, for purposes of pious fraud.

First Man, First Woman

There was no first man "Adam," according to the Hebrew text. The word adam in Hebrew is a common noun, meaning man in a generic sense and in Genesis 1:26, it states:

"And elohim (gods) said, Let us make adam (man)"; and so "elohim created ha- adam (the-man); ... male and female created he them" (1: 27).

In the second creation story, where man is first made alone:

"Yahveh formed ha-adam (the-man) out of the dust of ha-adamah-the ground" (2:7).

Man is called in Hebrew adam because he was formed out of adamah, the ground; just as in Latin man is called homo because he was formed from humus, the ground. Early Christian father Lactantius stated it as 'homo ex humo' ('man from the ground', or 'dust' as it commonly stated today).

The forging of the name Adam from the Hebrew noun adam into a mythical proper name Adam, was after the so-called Exodus. The fraud in the forging of fictitious genealogies from "in the beginning" to Father Abraham.

And this wasn't done by Christians, but rather by early Hebrew priests. Nonetheless, early Christians took this deception and used it for their own newly forged religion.

Who has a Soul?

In Genesis 1 is the account of the creation of the elohim-gods-on the fifth day, of "nephesh hayyah" which is "the moving creature that hath life," and of "nephesh hayyah-every living creature" out of the waters (1:20, 21); and on the sixth day of "nephesh hayyah-the living creature" out of the ground (1:24); and he gave to ha-adam-the-man dominion over "kol nephesh hagyah-everything wherein there is life," (1:30.)

The Hebrew text states that all animal living creatures are by God called "nephesh hayyah," literally "living soul".

In Chapter 2 is the history of ha-adam made from ha-adamah; and, in contrast to these lowly "living creatures" (nephesh hayyah), Yahveh-clohim "breathed into his nostrils nishmath hayyim -- (living breaths), and ha-adam became nephesh hayyah-a living soul". (2:7)

In Hebrew everywhere you read the word nephesh it simply means soul, and hayyah (living) is the feminine singular adjective from hai, life.

In the original Hebrew texts, Man was created exactly the same as the other animals. All had or were 'nephesh hayyah' or living souls.

Remember, tho, that the reason there are two creation stories is because two culture's stories of creation were woven together by the early Hebrew priest craft.

Unknown scribes, in translation, made animals merely creatures, and "Creation's masterpiece, Man," became a "living soul." They falsely altered these plain words so as to deceive us into believing a special God-breathed soul is in man which is completely different from animal that merely perishes to dust.

The implication of this is that someone has fraudulently decided that we are a special creation that has a soul, and eliminated the actual words of what Genesis says. Now all other animals don't have a soul. According to the story, all things that live have a soul. So what happened here? Forgery. That's what happened.

Chalk one up for vegetarians.

There Was No Continuous Hebrew Monotheistic Culture

When Yahveh appeared to Moses in the Burning Bush, and announced himself as "the God of thy fathers," he was a total stranger to Moses. How do I know? Read the account. It doesn't take a scholar to read where Moses ASKS who's taking. No, Moses wasn't merely surprised at the voice…he simply didn't know what was going on. (The fact that Moses is just a rehash of the Egyptian Mises is another essay altogether. But for the purposes of this essay, I'm pretending that Moses was a real person.)

Moses did not know this Yahveh, and had never heard of him. So that he asked, "What is thy name?" -so that he could report it to the people back home in Egypt, who had never heard it. After some intermission, the God came directly to the point, and declared-here are the exact words-one of the most notorious falsities in the Hebrew text:

"And elohim spake unto Moses, and said unto him., anoki Yahveh -- I am the Lord!

"And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of el-shaddai, but by my name Yahveh (JEHOVAH) was I not known to them." (Ex. 6:2, 8.)

The Hebrew God for the first time since the world began, is "revealed" to mankind the "ineffable name" of Yahveh, here first appearing in the Bible translations, and there printed as JEHOVAH in capital letters; for more vivid and awe-inspiring impression.

But this is a notorious lie-since we known that Moses did not write the first five books of the Hebrew text.

In Genesis 2:4, the name YAHVEH first appears; "in the day that Yahveh-elohim made the earth and the heavens." Its first recorded use as a mystical personage, was when Eve "conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from Yahveh-the Lord." (Gen. 4:1.)

The personal name YAHVEH occurs in the Book of Genesis one hundred and fifty-six times. It's spoken dozens of times by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as any one can read in Genesis. Every single time that the title "the Lord" and "the Lord God" appears, it is a false translation by the priests for the Hebrew personal name YAHVEH.

Throughout the Hebrew "scriptures" it occurs thousands of times: "The sacred name occurs in Genesis ~156 times; and is found in the Old Testament approximately 6000 times, either alone or in along with another Divine name."

More exactly, the Tetragrammaton (YHVH), appears in the Old Testament 6823 times as the proper name of God as the God of Israel. As such it serves to distinguish him from the gods of the other nations." Thus was the Hebrew tribal god YAHVEH distinguished from Bel, and Chemosh, and Dagon, and Shamash, and the dozens of "gods of the nations". Just as James would distinguish his name from Rudolph, or Cary, this was precisely the Hebrew usage-to distinguish one heathen god from another.

And this the pious translators, foisting their fraud on us, sought to hide, giving names to all the "other gods," but suppressing a name for the Hebrew deity, who as "the Lord," or "the Lord God," was high and unique, "a god above all gods," -the one and only true God-thru the use of a tetragrammaton.

But yet a more malicious and evil-intentioned deception, 6828 times, is the name of the Hebrew God concealed by false rendition for the deliberate purpose of forging the whole Hebrew texts, as translated, into a semblance of harmony with the false declaration of Exodus 6:3, that "by my name YAHVEH was I not know unto them."

Search as one may, outside Exodus 6:3, the god-name YAHVEH (Jehovah) is never to be found in the translations, except in Psalm 78:18, and Isaiah 12:2 and 26:4. (But they are irrelevant for this discussion because those passages were written well after the original 5 books were forged.)

The false translations thus "make truth to be a liar," the lie of Exodus 6:3 to seem the truth; and a barbarous heathen tribal god among a hundred neighbor and competitive gods to be the nameless One Lord God of the Universe. For more on this tribal god, you can read

Who is this Jehovah and Where Does He Live?

What does this imply? It implies this: the Hebrew-Christian-One-God is a patent forgery and myth; a mythological Father-god can have no "only begotten Son"; Jesus Christ is a myth even before he is mythically born by the forged whimsy of the early Christian 'fathers'.

A Few Translations

These translations, while only three in number, will change your whole way of thinking about what is being presented in your Bible.

Son of Man: In all three major Semitic languages (Aramaic, Hebrew, and Arabic) the term barnasha means "human being". Jesus often referred to himself as a human being (28 times in the Gospels). Barnasha comes from bar (son) and nasha (man). The meaning of barnasha has created a lot of confusion in the Gospels. It is impossible to translate the Aramaic term of barnasha literally as "son of man" - and yet most biblical translators have and still do just that to this day. In the Aramaic language the word bar is combined with many other words to create different meanings - most specifically is means a "likeness." For example barabba means "resembles his father". Barhila translated literally would mean "son of power" but in reality it means "soldier". So when we read in the Gospels the phrase "son of man" it should be read correctly as "human being".

Son of God: The word bar means a likeness or resemblance to the suffix word. The Aramaic term that Son of God comes from is bardalaha. Translated literally as "son of God" it does not mean this. Bardalaha in reality means "like God" or "God-like". So when Jesus is referred to as the "Son of God" we should read this correctly as "God-like" or "like God". So what does that tell you about the translation we read in today's Bibles? It tells you that Jesus was not the Son of God - but that he was "God-like". There is a big difference. Jesus himself repeatedly referred to himself as a "human being". The Aramaic reference does not mean one is physically divine - it means there is an important spiritual relationship between God and the man whom is bestowed that phraseology. In addition, don't forget that the Council of Nicea in 325 CE voted to change the human Jesus to a supernatural being. It wasn't until that time that any church thought of Jesus as such.

Only Begotten Son: The world ehedaya is Aramaic. It is very important to understand its meaning when hearing that phrase being bantered about. When we read that Jesus was God's "only begotten son" - it is an incorrect translation of the Aramaic word. The term is found exclusively in the Gospel of John. The phrase we read in English was translated from a Greek word, monogenes. Monos means "single" or "one" and genos means "kind". So the Greek translation originally was with "one-of-a-kind". So where does 'begotten' come from? The Greek word genos is distantly related to the verb gennan which means "to beget". Thus, to translate monogenes as "only begotten" is improper and incorrect--which is an indication of an ill-trained translator being involved with the text. The actual translation should be "unique son" or "one-of-a-kind". The Aramaic word ehedaya means "sole heir" and "the beloved". So when we combine monogenes ehedaya we get "one-of-a-kind, beloved son". That's considerably different from 'only begotten son'.

About the Ku Klux Klan
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ku Klux Klan is a racist, anti-Semitic movement with a commitment to extreme violence to achieve its goals of racial segregation and white supremacy. Of all the types of right-wing hate groups that exist in the United States, the Klan remains the one with the greatest number of national and local organizations around the country.

More than 40 different Klan groups exist, many having multiple chapters, or “klaverns,” including a few that boast a presence in a large number of states. There are over a hundred different Klan chapters around the country, with a combined strength of members and associates that may total around 5,000.

After a period of relative quiet, Ku Klux Klan activity has spiked noticeably upwards in 2006, as Klan groups have attempted to exploit fears in America over gay marriage, perceived “assaults” on Christianity, crime and especially immigration.

KKK Symbol
Founder: Confederate Civil War veterans Captain John C. Lester, Major James R. Crowe, John D. Kennedy, Calvin Jones, Richard R. Reed, Frank O. McCord
Founded: 1866
Headquarters: Each different Klan group has its own headquarters.
Background: The Klan has fragmented into more than 40 separate factions of varying sizes. There is no “one” Ku Klux Klan.
Estimated size: There are over a hundred different chapters in the various Klan organizations, with varying memberships. Overall, there may be as many as 5,000 members and associates of the Ku Klux Klan. The Klan is strongest in the South and in the Midwest.
Criminal Activity: The Klan has a relatively high association with criminal activity, ranging from hate crimes to acts of domestic terrorism.
Media: Mass mailings, leafleting and the Internet
Strategy: Public rallies and protests, "adopt a highway" programs and other attention getting stunts, Internet
Ideology: White supremacist ideology not far from that of neo-Nazis, although it tends to be more Christian-oriented and to stress nativism.
Affiliations: National Socialist Movement, Aryan Nations, Christian Identity groups
Financial support: Little. Most funding comes from membership dues and sales of Klan paraphernalia.

The Ku Klux Klan first emerged following the Civil War as America’s first true terrorist group. Since its inception, the Ku Klux Klan has seen several cycles of growth and collapse, and in some of these cycles the Klan has been more extreme than in others. In all of its incarnations, however, the Klan has maintained its dual heritage of hate and violence.

Paranoia as Patriotism:
Far-Right Influences on the Militia Movement

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aryan Nations
Headquartered near Hayden Lake, Idaho, Aryan Nations is a paramilitary hate group founded in the mid-1970s by Rev. Richard Girnt Butler, now 77 years old. It was formed around Butler's Church of Jesus Christ Christian, one of the several hundred churches affiliated with "Identity," a pseudo-theological hate movement. Identity doctrine maintains that Anglo-Saxons, not Jews, are the Biblical "chosen people," that non-whites are "mud people" on the level of animals, and that Jews are "children of Satan."

Aryan Nations militantly advocates anti-Semitism and the establishment of a white racist state. Although primarily an Identity group, Butler's Aryan Nations reflects a Nazi-like philosophy; Butler himself has praised Hitler. During the 1980s, several of Butler's followers joined members of the neo-Nazi National Alliance and some KKK splinter groups to form a secret organization known as The Order, which planned to overthrow the U.S. government. To raise money for their planned revolution, The Order engaged in a crime spree involving murder, counterfeiting, bank robberies and armored car hold-ups. The group's activities ended with the death of its founder and leader, Robert J. Mathews, in a shootout with Federal agents in December 1984, and the incarceration of many of its members.

As noted, anti-Semitism is a basic tenet of the Aryan Nations ideology. For example, Dennis Hilligoss, the group's state coordinator in Oregon, recently said that "The Jew is like a destroying virus that attacks our racial body to destroy our Aryan culture and purity of our race."

To aid in recruitment efforts, Aryan Nations hosts many racist activits during its summer festivals of hate at Hayden Lake, called the "World Congress of Aryan Nations." At these conferences, Butler's organization has offered courses in urban terrorism and guerrilla warfare. Numerous extremists have addressed Aryan Nations gatherings. John Trochmann, a featured speaker at the 1990 congress, later became a founder and leader of the Militia of Montana.

Legacies of slavery

“Slave Emancipation; or John Bull Gulled out of Twenty Millions”. Documents in the National Archives link two of the City’s most renowned names – NM Rothschild, patriarch of the banking dynasty, and James William Freshfield, founder of City law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer – more closely to slavery than had been previously disclosed. Until now Mr Rothschild’s chief known connection with slavery was helping to end it by lending the UK government £15m of the £20m it used in the 1830s to bail out slave-owners after it abolished slavery – depicted in this cartoon (by CJ Grant and reproduced with permission from the UCL Art Collection).

For 170 years, papers documenting one of England’s darkest periods and showing companies, families and institutions that knowingly benefited from slavery, remained hidden in the National Archives. Nick Draper’s research will form the basis of a project by University College London to list every slave-owner resident in Britain in the 1830s and highlight the companies, art collections and institutions that have links to 19th century colonial slavery. © Daniel Lynch

Rothschild’s Antigua counterclaim for compensation. Among National Archives documents is a claim for £3,000 compensation made by Nathan Mayer Rothschild and his brother Baron James de Rothschild. The documents show the brothers agreed £3,000 owed to Lord James O’Bryen, after the sale of his estate in Antigua, should be secured to NM Rothschild via a mortgage on 88 slaves on the estate. © Daniel Lynch

Asset values. After the man who bought Lord James O’Bryen’s estate went bankrupt, NM Rothschild used the government compensation scheme to claim the £3,000. Details of claim. Neither the Rothschild family’s own archive nor Niall Ferguson’s history of the family, reveal Nathan Mayer Rothschild’s claim as a mortgagee of slaves under the compensation system he helped create. Among founders of lawfirms whose successor companies still exist, the Freshfield's name appears most often in the slave compensation records, having successfully collected government bail-out money on 10 claims as trustees, or owners-in-fee of slave estates for a total of 4 clients, according to a parliamentary list of awarded claims. © Daniel Lynch

Particulars of Freshfield’s counterclaim. Uniquely within the records, Freshfields partners also entered a claim for money on behalf of their firm under the compensation scheme for slave-owners as they sought to recoup unpaid legal fees. © Daniel Lynch

Slideshow: Slavery connections uncovered

Oh for the love of God, buzz off!

5th Protocol of Zion| 7.26.09 @ 5:14PM

The Fifth Protocol --
"We will so wear out and exhaust the Gentiles by all this that they will be compelled to offer us an international authority, which by its position will enable us to absorb without disturbance all the governmental forces of the world and thus form a super-government.

"We must so direct the education of Gentile society that its hands will drop in the weakness of discouragement in the face of any undertaking where initiative is needed."

Zion| 7.26.09 @ 5:24PM

Return to Table of Contents/ . . .
PROTOCOL No. 7
1. The intensification of armaments, the increase of police forces - are all essential for the completion of the aforementioned plans. What we have to get at is that there should be in all the States of the world, besides ourselves, only the masses of the proletariat, a few millionaires devoted to our interests, police and soldiers.

2. Throughout all Europe, and by means of relations with Europe, in other continents also, we must create ferments, discords and hostility. Therein we gain a double advantage. In the first place we keep in check all countries, for they will know that we have the power whenever we like to create disorders or to restore order. All these countries are accustomed to see in us an indispensable force of coercion. In the second place, by our intrigues we shall tangle up all the threads which we have stretched into the cabinets of all States by means of the political, by economic treaties, or loan obligations. In order to succeed in this we must use great cunning and penetration during negotiations and agreements, but, as regards what is called the "official language," we shall keep to the opposite tactics and assume the mask of honesty and complacency. In this way the peoples and governments of the GOYIM, whom we have taught to look only at the outside whatever we present to their notice, will still continue to accept us as the benefactors and saviours of the human race.

UNIVERSAL WAR
3. We must be in a position to respond to every act of opposition by war with the neighbors of that country which dares to oppose us: but if these neighbors should also venture to stand collectively together against us, then we must offer resistance by a universal war.

4. The principal factor of success in the political is the secrecy of its undertakings: the word should not agree with the deeds of the diplomat.

5. We must compel the governments of the GOYIM to take action in the direction favored by our widely conceived plan, already approaching the desired consummation, by what we shall represent as public opinion, secretly promoted by us through the means of that so-called "Great Power" - THE PRESS, WHICH, WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS THAT MAY BE DISREGARDED, IS ALREADY ENTIRELY IN OUR HANDS.

6. In a word, to sum up our system of keeping the governments of the goyim in Europe in check, we shall show our strength to one of them by terrorist attempts and to all, if we allow the possibility of a general rising against us, we shall respond with the guns of America or China or Japan. (The Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 - Ed.).

Death of Democracy by Jews| 7.26.09 @ 5:49PM

POISON OF LIBERALISM
8. Under various names there exists in all countries approximately one and the same thing. Representation, Ministry, Senate, State Council, Legislative and Executive Corps. I need not explain to you the mechanism of the relation of these institutions to one another, because you are aware of all that; only take note of the fact that each of the above-named institutions corresponds to some important function of the State, and I would beg you to remark that the word "important" I apply not to the institution but to the function, consequently it is not the institutions which are important but their functions. These institutions have divided up among themselves all the functions of government - administrative, legislative, executive, wherefore they have come to operate as do the organs in the human body. If we injure one part in the machinery of State, the State falls sick, like a human body, and ... will die.

9. When we introduced into the State organism the poison of Liberalism its whole political complexion underwent a change. States have been seized with a mortal illness - blood poisoning. All that remains is to await the end of their death agony.

10. Liberalism produced Constitutional States, which took the place of what was the only safeguard of the GOYIM, namely, Despotism; and A CONSTITUTION, AS YOU WELL KNOW, IS NOTHING ELSE BUT A SCHOOL OF DISCORDS, misunderstandings, quarrels, disagreements, fruitless party agitations, party whims - in a word, a school of everything that serves to destroy the personality of State activity. THE TRIBUNE OF THE "TALKERIES" HAS, NO LESS EFFECTIVELY THAN THE PRESS, CONDEMNED THE RULERS TO INACTIVITY AND IMPOTENCE, and thereby rendered them useless and superfluous, for which reason indeed they have been in many countries deposed. THEN IT WAS THAT THE ERA OF REPUBLICS BECOME POSSIBLE OF REALIZATION; AND THEN IT WAS THAT WE REPLACED THE RULER BY A CARICATURE OF A GOVERNMENT - BY A PRESIDENT, TAKEN FROM THE MOB, FROM THE MIDST OF OUR PUPPET CREATURES, OR SLAVES. This was the foundation of the mine which we have laid under the GOY people, I should rather say, under the GOY peoples.

WE NAME PRESIDENTS
11. In the near future we shall establish the responsibility of presidents.

12. By that time we shall be in a position to disregard forms in carrying through matters for which our impersonal puppet will be responsible. What do we care if the ranks of those striving for power should be thinned, if there should arise a deadlock from the impossibility of finding presidents, a deadlock which will finally disorganize the country? ...

13. In order that our scheme may produce this result we shall arrange elections in favor of such presidents as have in their past some dark, undiscovered stain, some "Panama" or other - then they will be trustworthy agents for the accomplishment of our plans out of fear of revelations and from the natural desire of everyone who has attained power, namely, the retention of the privileges, advantages and honor connected with the office of president. The chamber of deputies will provide cover for, will protect, will elect presidents, but we shall take from it the right to propose new, or make changes in existing laws, for this right will be given by us to the responsible president, a puppet in our hands. Naturally, the authority of the presidents will then become a target for every possible form of attack, but we shall provide him with a means of self-defense in the right of an appeal to the people, for the decision of the people over the heads of their representatives, that is to say, an appeal to that same blind slave of ours - the majority of the mob. Independently of this we shall invest the president with the right of declaring a state of war. We shall justify this last right on the ground that the president as chief of the whole army of the country must have it at his disposal, in case of need for the defense of the new republican constitution, the right to defend which will belong to him as the responsible representative of this constitution. (Iran? Grenada? Kuwait? Iraq? Panama? Somalia? Bosnia? Kosovo? Indonesia?)

14. It is easy to understand that in these conditions the key of the shrine will lie in our hands, and no one outside ourselves will any longer direct the force of legislation.

15. Besides this we shall, with the introduction of the new republican constitution, take from the Chamber the right of interpolation on government measures, on the pretext of preserving political secrecy, and, further, we shall by the new constitution reduce the number of representatives to a minimum, thereby proportionately reducing political passions and the passion for politics. If, however, they should, which is hardly to be expected, burst into flame, even in this minimum, we shall nullify them by a stirring appeal and a reference to the majority of the whole people ... Upon the president will depend the appointment of presidents and vice-presidents of the Chamber and the Senate. Instead of constant sessions of Parliaments we shall reduce their sittings to a few months. Moreover, the president, as chief of the executive power, will have the right to summon and dissolve Parliament, and, in the latter case, to prolong the time for the appointment of a new parliamentary assembly. But in order that the consequences of all these acts which in substance are illegal, should not, prematurely for our plans, fall upon the responsibility established by us of the president, WE SHALL INSTIGATE MINISTERS AND OTHER OFFICIALS OF THE HIGHER ADMINISTRATION ABOUT THE PRESIDENT TO EVADE HIS DISPOSITIONS BY TAKING MEASURES OF THEIR OWN, for doing which they will be made the scapegoats in his place ... This part we especially recommend to be given to be played by the Senate, the Council of State, or the Council of Ministers, but not to an individual official.

16. The president will, at our discretion, interpret the sense of such of the existing laws as admit

ISRAELI SNIPERS KILLING US TROOPS IN IRAQ.

Anderson Cooper of CNN showed this video of snipers killing U.S. troops in Iraq on his October 18, 2006 show. CNN says it obtained the video from a "representative" of an unnamed "insurgent leader." Bear in mind that Anderson Cooper used to work for the CIA.

Richard Wilson's hypothesis: Israeli soldiers and/or Mossad agents are killing our soldiers in Iraq in order to enrage American troops so that the slaughter continues.

Proof: At the very beginning of this video clip, you see a rifle with a video camera attached to it. This weapon is made by the Rafael company, an Israeli arms manufacturer, that also makes IEDs. If you watch the video all the way through, it explains how this rifle works. CNN stated that the camera used to film these shootings was not a mounted rifle camera. But as you watch the video, you see that with each shot fired, the camera recoils. That would only happen if it were mounted on the rifle. Why is this significant? Because this kind of rifle-camera is extremely sophisticated and not available to your average Iraqi insurgent. I mean, it's not exactly an easily obtainable Saturday night special! Something this sophisticated points to Mossad.

Mossad is a master at false flag operations, e.g., Oklahoma City, the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen, the bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Buenos Aires, the July 7, 2005 London bombings, the 9-11 attacks in New York, the assassination of the Prime Minister in Beirut, the stoking of Muslim riots in France last year, the bombing of the Hassan al-Askari Mosque in Samarra, Iraq, etc.

Israelis freely move among US and UK troops in Iraq, and have access to top-level US intelligence. Until July 2003, the head of all US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan was General Tommy Franks, a Zionist Jew. (He is now on the board of directors for Bank of America.) On November 7, 2006 another Zionist Jew became a principle liaison between Mossad and US forces in Iraq: Major General Richard F. Natonski of the Marine Corps. His title is Deputy Commandant for Plans, Policies and Operations.

Because of this access, the "insurgents" (i.e., Mossad agents) know exactly where US vehicles will be and who will be inside them. This allows them to target for maximum false flag effect.

For example, on July 23, 2005, a detachment of 19 female US Marines was sent to Fallujah to check Iraqi women for bombs. An IED blew up their truck. Two of the young American women were killed, five were critically wounded, and four were captured. The bodies of the four captured women turned up later in a garbage dump with their throats cut. Americans were outraged. Islamic clerics insisted that only Israelis could be so cold-blooded. And who was in charge of US forces in Fallujah at the time? None other than Major General Natonski, the Mossad liaison.

Americans are supposed to believe that rag-tag "insurgents" use IEDs powerful enough to kill three US troops per day, on average. An American soldier even set up a blog on how "Intel" is betraying and targeting US troops. But sometimes Mossad bomb-makers accidentally blow themselves upin Iraq.

According to Richard Wilson, Israeli sniping and IEDs are false flag operations. He says that on March 28, 2005, Americans arrested 19 Mossad agents who fired twice on a US Marine checkpoint. The Marines beat up the Mossad agents and tore off their Star-of-David necklaces. (The US media incorrectly said the agents were Americans.) The Mossad agents said they were employees of Zapata Engineering, which helps the CIA conduct interrogations, and also manages US ammo dumps and US motor pools in Iraq.

IEDs in Iraq are powerful enough to flip over a 70-ton tank. Some of the models shoot depleted-uranium projectiles, and are triggered by electronic devices surreptitiously planted on US armored vehicles. Zapata Engineering (which employs Mossad agents) makes this exact kind of trigger, and oversees some of the US motor pools.

Rumsfeld says the IEDs come from Iran, but Richard says they come from Mossad, and are not "improvised" at all. The Israeli company, Rafael (see above), makes IEDS, which are buried in the middle of a road. Beside the road is a device which emits a laser or radio signal. This device is manufactured by firms like Zapata Engineering, which is controlled by Zionist Jews. The IED mine, manufactured by Israel, is inert until a US vehicle (secretly planted with a triggering device) rolls over it.

Whenever Mossad carries out these false-flag operations they produce a videotape or a recording from an "unnamed source" that is "close to al-Qaeda." Sometimes they say "the claim was posted on an Internet website, but its authenticity could not be verified."

But Israelis would never kill anyone in cold blood, would they? After all, the USS Liberty massacre was "an accident!"

US TAXES to Kill US Troops| 7.26.09 @ 6:59PM

Israel and Egypt are the two largest recipients of U.S. aid. For its“participation” in the Gulf War, Egypt was forgiven its indebtedness of $9 billion. Israel pays its bills. It receives $2.8 billion every year. Of that amount, $2.0 billion is for military aid and $0.8 billion for economic aid. It’s fair to ask whether this is a good deal for the American taxpayer.

What are the Facts?

eric m| 7.26.09 @ 9:55PM

One thing is for damn sure, I will not risk my reputation by reporting any suspicious activity of a person of color.
That is the bottom line on the President's response.

dicktater| 7.26.09 @ 10:36PM

Gates is an idiot with a big mouth who knows less about his Rights than you. He should have given Crowley enough rope to hang himself with. But, no. His ego wouldn't let him. Instead, he wanted to engage in a contest to see who could be the bigger horse's ass.

Crowley is another policethug whose only concern is ensuring that those with whom he has dealings act subservient to him. He's been conditioned and trained to be this way.

Put together, they are a recipe for disaster. Thank those who control the educational system in this country, for they are to blame.

You and your fiance are both wimps who obviously can't dream of standing up for your Rights. And in turn, you both instruct people to bow down to police as if they are gods. Though they may want to be, they are not gods. They are men and women who chose to be servants in the defense of our Rights. Their only legitimate function is to defend our Rights, not to push us around as if we are someone's (their?) slave. In no way does that give us the right to abuse or disrepect them. But, if ye love Liberty, use it or lose it. You only have those Rights which you are willing to defend.

re Richard Baker
"White liberal guilt is a wonder to behold."
I quite clearly remember posting that I am a libertarian. This does not necessarily mean a member of that party but rather a republican voter with a libertarian philosophy. Did you read anything else I posted or did you simply assume I was a democrat troll because I'm not mindlessly repeating what everyone else has already opined?
Liberal Reader, I do not feel that the reaction you see in this forum is a response to a black crying "Racism!" but rather a black making a false allegation of racism. A subtle but important difference. If there was evidence of genuine racism at play I think the reactions of commenters here would be different.

macdaddy| 7.27.09 @ 2:32AM

Unable to assemble a cogent argument that might sway conservatives, the liberal trolls have taken to spamming this site. There really needs to be a moderator otherwise you're going to get all of War and Peace posted here before long.

Richard Baker| 7.27.09 @ 7:38AM

Macdaddy:
Let them go. Their incoherence IS their only argument.

Dr.Dawg| 7.27.09 @ 10:06AM

"He could have produced his identification, proved to the officer that he lived in the house"

He did.

PeterH| 7.27.09 @ 1:08PM

American Spectator:

Does anyone monitor the comments? Could we please eliminate the handbag ads and the neo-nazi rants that have no relation to the article?

Richard Baker| 7.27.09 @ 7:53PM

Dr. Dawg:
Yes, the officer made it clear that he didn't know who this guy was. He continued to demand ID, which he FINALLY got. Gates then continued to shout and scream in a most immature fashion at 12:45 am. That got him the disorderly charge. Do you think it normal for someone to be yelling at the top of their voice at that time of morning? Must be a hoot where you live, then.

Sarge| 7.27.09 @ 8:09PM

It just goes to show you that an education does not give you common sense. You would think that an educated man like Mr. Gates would have used common sense , showed his ID and used a nicer tone of voice to the officer. I'm sure if he was nicer and showed his ID that would have been the end of it. Mr. Gates thought he was above the law. I applaud all the Police officers for the job they do. I could not put up with the crap that they have too.

Brother in Blue| 7.28.09 @ 1:23AM

First of all, I am a police officer. Second, the next person who decides to post a comment, do all of us a favor and read the report before commenting on stuff like "did't he need a warrant to be in the house" or "he arrested Mr. gates in his house" or something similar. Mr. Gates followed him outside. Sgt. Crowley warned Mr. Gates more than once before arresting him. Mr. Gates acted like a jerk. And for Jesus' sake, just because the charges were dropped, does not mean Sgt. Crowley made an improper or illegal arrest. District Attorney offices decline cases all the time- even if the person is guilty.

The situation:
If a police officer is called to a burglary ( most likely a felony charge), and the person the officer reasonably believes to be the suspect is inside the residence, the suspect is usually going to be proned out at gun point. The suspect will be handcuffed for detention purposes only, searched for weapons, and then the questioned. That is standard officer safety tactics in that type of situation. Once it is determined that the person is not a criminal, they are picked up, brushed off, and apologized too. It is explained to them why they had gun pointed at them. If they have any sense, they will be happy the officer was willing to take charge of a possible dangerous situation. Homeowners should be glad (and mostly are glad from my experience) that the officer cared enough to protect their property.

I have read the report. If the report on "The Smoking Gun" website is indeed the actual report, Sgt. Crowley handled the situation the way he needed to. Sgt. Crowley was totally justified being inside the residence without a warrant based upon the facts on scene:
1) The witness saw two men (she did not recognize) force open a door,
2) The "suspect" was still inside the residence, possibly burglarizing the residence and
3) Sgt. Crowley was by himself with two possible burglars (who could have been armed with weapons if it was the real deal). Mr. Gates should have thanked Sgt. Crowley for his timely response and for tying to portect his residence.

Our job is hard. It is 99% uneventful and 1% chaos. It is easy to Monday morning quarterback when you have not experienced the 1%. We come to work to protect you. We work long hours, screwed up shifts, for average pay or even less. We come back day after day because we care. Yes, there are a few bad apples, but the vast majority of police officers are smart, sensible, witty, upstanding citizens.

I am not going to slander Mr. Obama. I am not the President, nor do I know the pressures involved in the presidency. One thing I do know is that I was trained that you do not have probable cause to make an arrest unless you know the facts. Let us hope the criminal justice system does not decide to adopt Mr. Obama's philosophy about the Gates incident, because police officers would not need to "know the facts" anymore before making an arrest. Food for thought.

Back the blue, because they back you!

Dennis| 7.28.09 @ 11:26AM

Lets stop calling them African Americans, they are Americans just like everyone else who's in this country.

crs1| 7.28.09 @ 1:10PM

Let me start off by stating, I cannot stand Democrats or Republicans as I think they are one in the same beast now. The real 2 party system is dead and a thing of the past. What exists now is not a Republic or a Democracy. We have merely become nothing more than a greed based Capitalist society. Now on the losing end of the New World Order our leaders have taken part in creating. So please save all all the "you must be a Demass or a RepubliPuke" for writing this in your comments.

Now I would like to address some of the things that enraged me about Obama's speech and some things I find bothering about him in general. First off the man is an ego maniac the same as Bush-if not larger. He doesn't want to sit behind the desk and do the job of presidency. He just wants to play one on TV and make a million photo-ops for himself. His constant droning of preacher like sermon/speeches grows tiring. He has had to keep America in a constant fear based state of pretend crisis to try to force through everything he's done since in office! First it was the "sky will fall if we don't bail out the assholes who got us all into this mess, but it's really for the good of the little people" bullshit. Now last night he states we will "bankrupt the entire country" if we don't hurry through his new health care plan of his! What scare tactics.

He ran on the idea of not to vote against him due to his race-if you were white. While at the same time plying blacks to vote (the most ever in the history of the US) for nothing other than this one simple fact and the 'came from the mean streets of Chicago lie' he'd been spinning. Then went onto start his presidency off by spinning the biggest staged photo-op by using MLK day as a back drop to compare himself to Martin Luther King himself 24/7 via every channel in the USA. In some ways I think the man still thinks he's running for president the way he still courts the media on a daily bases versus just getting his hands dirty doing the real job, lol.

He promised us all he would "read the budget line by line". Gee, think he has read the first 20 pages by now? No, he's too busy printing up the money to spend as fast as he makes it! Oh wait no, I know he read it while in Russia when he snubbed them by staying in with the wife and kids, right??? FYI Mr. President meetings with public dignitaries in their foreign countries is the time to do your job. Not for taking a Summer break with the family. Especially since you just stated this week you are clearing the schedule for most of August to "spend more quality time with the family" before the kids go back to school. Notice no one offered to shake his hand nor is his 'rock star status' established there. If anything the country came off looking like the weak inexperienced man we hired for the job to Russia. In fact, why is it Hillary couldn't go? Can a little frail woman not fly on a plane and still do her job with a broken wrist? I wonder what Max Cleland would think of that idea? Thus the only reason for him going there was for the press and the family vacation, nothing more. Yet America never got to really see the Russia debacle. We were to busy being inundated with coverage from Africa and his God like status there where he is touted as a "son of Africa". Funny as that's actually a lot closer to the truth than where his fake birth certificate states he was born, lol!

The entire news conference was staged in advance with him knowing who to call on and the prepared questions. Poor Helen still raised her hand as usual, only to be ignored again. They know not to call on her as they fear her which is why they have played her off as 'too old to be relative to the people' and disrespect her in the ways they do now. In fact since she stated recently during a live White House news conference " the point is the control from here. We have never had that in the White House. And we have had some control, but not this control. I mean I'm amazed. I'm amazed at you people who call for openness and transparency and you have controlled" I bet they never call on her again. Especially Obama himself. Just as Bush he has a hard time when grilled as his arrogance turns to anger too quickly.

He came out and literally read emotionless off the teleprompter for the first 15 minutes. While again stating we are in a crisis and that "only passing this bill will save us all". When asked if he thought he was the man for the job he touted "of coarse, I am the president". He just does not get what his job description is. Or even how the 3 governmental branch system works despite being a former (inexperienced) Senator! Sound like anyone we know that just left that office??? Again we have another "I'm the decider" in office who demands it's his way or we're all going to hell!

Despite blabbering on for almost 1 hour, he never really gave any concrete answers as to how all this would all be paid for. Other than to give his brilliant idea of not paying it or not putting the cost into the deficit (ya know the one he has tripled since picking up where Bush Left off in spending like there's no tomorrow) for the next decade..... Now this is the man who just lectured the entire country on over spending and credit card usage-as if that was what was really behind the banking/mortgage debacle. We were told to all "tighten our belts and stop living outside our means" yet now he expects us to get behind the idea of 'robbing Paul to pay Peter' for the next decade=give me a break!

He also really needs to learn to do some math if he actually thinks 97% of the people will be able to pay into this system. Get real 97% do not even pay taxes. Nor count all the welfare cases paying nothing already in any form. Also how do the 15-20 MILLION ILLEGAL'S fit into this system? Oh wait, that's right he will reward them all with citizenship and that will force them to finally pay into the systems they have been leeching dry for the past 3 decades. Yet even if they still refuse to pay he plans on subsidizing the cost for them. So it's a win, win once again on the backs of real Americans. Citizenship for coming here illegally, never paying taxes and still a free ride. Wow, if only we could all live the 'American dream' of the illegal, lol!

Yet what most offended me is he actually took time out of trying to convince us all how screweded we are without shooting this bill through like a speeding bullet to end the news conference (if you can really call it that, lol) by inciting more racial strife. He knew that question in advance. The man is his personal friend and he planned on his answer. He actually planned to call the police STUPID. This is the man who controls the entire military branch of the government and he picked the word stupid? He actually took the time to remind us all how he worked on the racial profiling bill in the Senate. What really was the need for this? Other than to remind us all that despite everything he said before getting into office. It really all comes down to the color of your skin in America and that only a black man can understand or change this! I thought his 'change' was about bringing us all together, not back handedly causing more racial divide? Also no coincidence he picked a Latina woman with the same views to sit on the Supreme court. As an American, as the niece of 4 uncles who served in the wars-1 of which who was a POW in Vietnam, and as the daughter of a police officer I was deeply and personally offended! If he were the president he promised us he would have stuck to the issues and not ended on such a note. If indeed we are to believe the catastrophes he claims we are doomed to suffer. Why belittle the situation by purposely choosing to end with laugher and belittlement?!?

Sadly the man has spent more time debating the breed of his dog versus this bill or even the bailouts he unwisely handed out before this! Now I realize just as he used his race to side step the real questions before the election. He is now using race as a way to divert important issues as the president and we are once again all falling for it! Is this the idea of 'change' we all hoped for? Wake up and think America! Written by a hard working white chick doing one of the many jobs Bush and a lot of other morons claim only an illegal would do and doing it well-while paying all my taxes!

Brother in Blue:
I read the report and was impressed with Sgt. Crowley's response. If my house were possibly being burglarized or broken into, his actions would be what I'd expect. The critics are trying to cover for an immature man who thinks that "Harvard" gives him leave to act in any way that he wishes. The disorderly charge was due to his shouting and yelling at 12:45 am. Pretty clear to me. Good message, yours.

Brother In Blue,

I cannot disagree with a single word you have written. I also respect you for the job you do.

I do wish to know if you would have written anything differently if there had been no arrest? That is, was the arrest necessary; I'll grant you there was plenty of justification.

In this fine line of a conflict between, what I will stipulate for the point of argument, an arrogant bigot and one of Cambridge's officers, would it not have been better that a trained officer called for a possible felony crime, once made aware of the fact that the situation was not what it appeared, simply stand down.

In the end, Gates probably got one of those "teaching moments". Perhaps he will benefit with a Red Stripe from the President. I cannot admire him, but I really don't think -- all reports aside -- that a man indignant at being challenged in his own home and without any indication of being a threat to the public should have been arrested.

I wasn't there. I could be wrong. But, as I have said before, if a man cannot be an arrogant bigot in his own home we have serious problems.
