If you can't sleep at night, or you're worried sick about your life, I promise that you will be very glad you read this.
It's not about what's hot in real estate right now or what investment is about to melt down.
It's about you.
This article will give your peace back to you, and let you to clearly see your future.
If you've read my earlier pieces in The American Spectator and note the dates on them, you will see that I called in advance the real estate meltdown and the Wall Street fiasco. Having called these events in advance is not important right now except to give authority to my next recommendation which is:
How to Survive All This.
How to navigate the present circumstances and come out stronger and more successful.
I am deeply troubled by the epidemic of gifted and talented people being absolutely frozen in panic and fear today about the economy and their lives.
Many people, especially 30 and 40-somethings, are to the point they can barely function or perform to their normal high levels of excellence, and their home lives are starting to suffer over their fear and insecurities of what's going on with the economy.
This is horribly wrong and dangerous to the individuals involved and to the country as a whole. America depends on the productivity and creativity of its brightest citizens, and will desperately need this productivity and creativity to come out of this. .
I know how the secret to surviving a recession or even a depression and I'm going to share it with you.
If you are accustomed to wearing Prada, driving a new car, vacationing in cool spots and sending your kids to private school, you're probably terrified that it may be all over.
It isn't.
You will get through this, but you will need a road map. Here it is:
My steps are so simple that you may forget them or skip over them, but others will keep this column and email it to their friends.

Uh, boy, whenever someone suggests that we turn to faith in times of turmoil, I know we're headed for a catastrophe. I can see those four horsemen of the Apocalypse galloping our way.

Don| 3.24.09 @ 8:59AM
People like Kitty do not realize that they rely on faith many times during their normal day just to get through it. e.g. One gets in their car having the faith that it will start. What Kitty is not saying is that she does not have faith in God and does not see how other people are able to get through their day with faith in Someone who controls it all.

Gee, Don, for someone who doesn't know me at all, you think you know me very well.
[Btw, I'm the conservative Kitty, not the liberal one who popped up on TAS the other day, so I'll call myself KittyM.]
I never wrote, nor implied, that I do not have faith in God. On the contrary, I do.
I said what I meant, and I meant what I said -- that whenever someone suggests turning to God that things must really be bad. Otherwise, Thomas might be advising us where to invest our money.
Personally, we're pumping all the extra money we have into basic home improvements -- new roof, new plumbing, new furnace, etc. -- before 1) Barry confiscates it through taxation and/or 2) runaway inflation reduces our savings to a loaf of bread.
And I pray every day for the best.

Amen and amen....though I would put the "trust in God" part first and last.
Oddly enough, what is going to happen in the next short period is that people may actually start going back to church, or at least start searching again for answers because they don't find them in their materialistic lifestyle.
Honestly, I hope this recession gives us a bit more perspective than having to have all the great stuff in the here and now, on credit, whether or not we can afford it. Both Christians, "Christians," and non-Christians need to wake up to what materialism REALLY is, and how much it affects us in America.
I don't really have to have it all...because it all goes away anyway.

For the step on re-inventing yourself. Go to the store, or sign up for a course on Excel right now. From executive level to bookkeeper you need to know this. I have taught undergraduates this course for years. I now teaching graduate students in engineering and my advice is the same, learn this software. For executives, don't rely anymore on someone compiling information for you - do it yourself; get a feel for the numbers. Bother to learn formatting. I can't tell you the number of executive level people who cannot put together a good looking spreadsheet that others want to read and study. As for others on the career path learn it deeply in all its facets. We have moved past the acquisition stage of hardware and software now more than ever it's time to put it to good use!

I've known Excel for about eight years now, and it didn't really change my life -- just helped me keep my job. My money's on Photoshop :)

On a micro- and macro-economic level, God is in control. What's more, he wants what's best for each and every one of us economic units - AND He throws in the guaranty of Eternal Life, to boot (a bargain at any price).
The problem for many folks (including, for the most part, folks who support liberal statists like Obama) is not that they don't believe in God, but that they don't believe they can rely on Him. They look to their own devices and convince themselves that they need to be in control of their "own" lives.
As a result, most folks worry about everything, including what will happen tomorrow, next week, next year, or the next ten years. Paralyzing fear, resentment, and self-pity follow on the heels of their failure to retain control, and they look for hope, not from God, but from someone as absurd as the "What, Me Worry?" kid, our current POTUS.
Yeah, I worry, too, about the absolute mess of our national economy and the mess I'm in, financially, but that's a failure of faith - on my part.
Here's some inspiration:
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “That's why I'm telling you to stop worrying about your life—what you will eat—or about your body—what you will wear, because life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the crows. They don't plant or harvest, they don't even have a storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds! Can any of you add an hour to the length of your life by worrying? So if you can't do a small thing like that, why worry about other things?"
"Consider how the lilies grow. They don't work or spin yarn, but I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. Now if that's the way God clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and thrown into an oven tomorrow, how much more will he clothe you—you who have little faith?"
"So stop concerning yourselves about what you will eat or what you will drink, and stop being distressed, because it is the gentiles who are concerned about all these things. Surely your Father knows that you need them! Instead, be concerned about his kingdom, and these things will be provided for you as well. Stop being afraid, little flock, because your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom."
Luke 12:22

The first thing Generation Yners need to learn is that it is NOT all about them personally. The reason your resume does not get any nibbles is NOT that "They Don't Like Me." The reason you flunked geology is NOT "the teacher doesn't like me." The reason you got fired from your secretarial job is not "My boss doesn't like me."
The reason is that, whether you like it or not, Someone Else IS the Boss Of You.
You didn't get the job because you sat down, crossed your legs, and started interrogating the interviewer about his "sustainable energy" plans, about "work-life balance", and about how much time off you get and how many perqs; and because you told him "I GOTTA leave at 4:00 to pick up my kids at daycare" even though the clearly advertised quitting time, if any, was 5:30.
The reason you flunked geology was that you didn't show up for class, your work was incomplete, you failed most of the exams, and you persisted in standing at the teacher's desk and whining that your F grade was "unfair" because you TRIED SO HARD ... when you and the prof both knew that the only thing you tried hard to do was pass the class without doing the work.
Your resume was rejected because half the words were misspelled, and the cover letter used was written in text message gibberish (e.g. the word is PEOPLE, not ppl.) A person who cannot spell, punctuate, paragraph, or recognize poor grammar in a letter of application is a person who cannot be left alone to do the job; and a person who needs a nanny to watch her work is depriving some useful person of a chair and a desk.
And you were fired because you couldn't do the work, or even worse, you WOULDN'T do the work. When telephoned from the boardroom to bring your pad and pen and take lunch orders, you sniffed, "I'm not a waitress!" When you were called from court at 4:55 and asked to get a boardroom and order coffee and snacks from the kitchen because your boss and the clients were coming back and by the way, stand by to take instructions because the Judge had decided to hear argument on damages tomorrow instead of Monday, you whined, "But I go home at fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive!" and you spent the next five minutes frantically trying to find someone else to do your work before you shut off your machinery and shot out the door.
And the next day when you came in, a 59 year old woman had your job ... because she could read, write, spell, punctuate, take lunch orders, run to the mall for nylons when your boss ripped hers right before a meeting, address clients with deference and stay til the work got done.
True, we were lucky enough to have parents who taught us these things, and who toiled in the factories and the fields so we would not have to. And you may have had four fathers and three mothers before you graduated from university. But your biggest problem is, was, and always has been that you believed that the world was your oyster and everything revolved around you.
Now it doesn't.
So you have a choice. Will you sit on the kerb and whine that it's not "fairrrrrrrrrrrrrr" and vote for the next demagogue or puppet who tells you he'll take stuff from others and hand it to you ... or will you save us all a world of trouble and just starve to death now?
Or will you find a 59 year old woman and ask her what the secret of success is? It's not in your pocket, Kimberly. The ball is in your court.
Your move.

"Yeah, I worry, too, about the absolute mess of our national economy and the mess I'm in, financially, but that's a failure of faith - on my part. Then Jesus said to his disciples."
Not enough to not blindly vote the line and spew illogical nonsense that contradicts your own supposed values. Here's a hint when one party has a surplus and excess social security and the other runs off with 700 Billion and leaves us in economic shambles they were not conservative I'm sorry to say. We just finished the presidential equivalent of an Enron scandal and these corrupt corporations buying our politicians circumventing the free market , taxing us to keep their empires afloat on empty credit , imaginary money and disingenuous, non competitive business practices are ruining you and I as well as the dreaded liberals. Look at what the ideals of capitalism , free market, and the values that our country was founded on. When ever we falter we can see our ideals have run counter to the forefathers. Compare these to what our conservatives and corporate leaders are practicing. Then thank Jesus you have enough food to eat and ask him help you find compassion and love for your fellow man. Don't expect he cares about and is watching over your stock portfolio though. The only praise Jesus values is that of living in accordance to his teachings, of humility, and compassion. He doesn't care how often you drive your BMW to church to sing of his glory , he had no BMWs or lavish churches only his teachings of love for the poor and contempt for those who pursued material wealth , worshiped false idols and competed with his fellow man while ignoring gods kingdom within.
Just so you know Jesus despised with all his holy being the pursuit of wealth , the concern with saving money, (story of the framer who hoarded grain to be set for life only to die in the night comes to mind.) and the collection of material things. The poor and meek shall inherit the earth , it is easier to fit a camel (proper translation of camel meaning rope) through the eye of a needle than for a wealthy man to gain entry into the kingdom of heaven. (you might be surprised at what Jesus considered wealth and decadence BTW)
