The March for Life Media Coverage—or Lack Thereof
by

Attention all “enemies of reproductive rights”!

If you visited Fox News, CNN, or MSNBC this morning looking for the top news of the day, you would have no idea that hundreds of thousands of people are gathered on the National Mall for the annual March for Life.

The current temperature is 9 degrees Fahrenheit—not exactly balmy weather—and students, teachers, businessmen and women, and even members of Congress are at the Mall, marching for the sanctity of life.

With those huge crowds, you would think major media outlets would at least want some bottom-of-the-front-page coverage of a major event. Think again.

There were no Twitter updates from Fox and CNN, and no video footage of thousands of Catholic school kids filing out of Mass last night.

However, if you happen to be an “abortion foe” (thank you Washington Post) and you do a bit of gumshoeing, you will find a few articles.

You’ll find that along with the Washington Post, USA Today, the CNN religion blog, and The Washington Times did bother to post something, along with a handful of smaller publications.

Oh, and The New York Times and CBS focused on Republicans’ “anti-abortion rights” stance, and threw jabs at Todd Akin’s insensitive remarks and the right’s war on women. Because, of course, the March demonstrates how the entire Republican Party is “callous on women’s issues” and initiating an “extreme attack against women’s rights.”

More moderate stories simply asked the question, “Is the March effective?” noting that only 30 percent of Americans want to overturn Roe v. Wade. But, what they failed to report is that the number of people who believe abortion should be legal in all circumstances has dropped from 34 percent in 1992 to 28 percent in 2013. Not to mention, 80 percent of Americans believe abortion should be illegal during the third trimester of pregnancy. The progress might be slow, but Americans are becoming more pro-life.

Thankfully, there is news out there letting us know this is the March’s 40th year, March for Life has an app, and this year’s theme is adoption. Instead of typical long speeches, a few brief comments will be made and a Catholic musician will play for the crowds. Due to inclement weather, we heard the voices of some marchers whose charter buses were cancelled, but who said it hadn’t dampened their pro-life spirits.

Despite their best efforts, it looks like Melissa Harris-Perry and other “advocates for reproductive justice” haven’t completely tied down the media. But of course I’m being unfair: “There may be liberals on TV at MSNBC, but the network is not operating with a political objective.”
