I came across this AP piece while traveling back to Boston from New York about how for the first time in its history Sweden has more men than women. The articles begins this way:
Famous for its efforts to put women on an equal footing with men, Sweden is experiencing a gender balance shift that has caught the country by surprise: For the first time since record-keeping began in 1749, it now has more men than women.
Swedes don’t quite know what to make of this sudden male surplus, which is highly unusual in the West, where women historically have been in the majority in almost every country. But it may be a sign of things to come in Europe as changes in life expectancy and migration transform demographics.
It isn’t, however, until the 10th and 11th paragraphs that we get to the heart of the matter:
Statistics officials say Sweden’s demographic shift is mainly due to men catching up with women in terms of life expectancy. But the arrival in recent years of tens of thousands of unaccompanied teenage boys from Afghanistan, Syria and North Africa is also having a significant impact.
Sweden’s biggest male surplus is in the 15-19 age group, where there are 108 boys for every 100 girls. That imbalance could grow to 115-to-100 this year when the impact of last year’s record number of asylum-seekers – including more than 35,000 unaccompanied minors – is reflected in the population statistics.
I believe it is fair to say that there aren’t many practicing Presbyterians among those “unaccompanied teenage boys from Afghanistan, Syria and North Africa”.
It isn’t that Swedes don’t know what to make of this demographic shift. Rather it is an indication of Swedes being unwilling to look at the consequences of a liberal immigration policy that failed to promote the egalitarianism Swedes so cherish. Simply put, Sweden didn’t demand assimilation and is now beginning to feel the consequences.
Frankly, it shouldn’t surprise Swedes at all. Men 55 and under outnumber women in Afghanistan and the same is true in Syria. Afghanistan is notorious for female infanticide and Syria isn’t much better.
Given how little value is given to lives of girls in Muslim countries like Afghanistan and Syria can it really be a surprise that Sweden would experience a similar demographic shift by importing a large mass of people who hold such values?
This isn’t to say all Muslim males who have emigrated to Sweden are prepared to commit infanticide much less carry out terrorist attacks. But when when a 60 Minutes crew from Australia is violently assaulted while covering a story on the Syrian refugee crisis, when Israeli tennis players must volley and serve inside empty stadiums and Swedish authorities must hush up sexual assaults by Muslim migrants for fear of being called racist, the Sweden of ABBA, Ikea, Volvo and equality will soon become a relic of the past.
