Missouri U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill’s mother has died. Sincerest condolences. Losing a parent is always traumatic. My heart goes out to the senator.
That said: What is it with deaths in families of major Senate candidates in Missouri? Gov. Mel Carnahan was trailing ever-so-slightly in the polls in 2000 when he tragically was killed in a plane crash with just three weeks left in the campaign; he was elected posthumously, with his wife eventually taking his seat. And U.S. Rep. Jerry Litton died ina plane crash on the day he won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in 1976.
This is eerie. And very, very sad.
