Canada’s NDP Leader: Parliament Hill Shooter Not a Terrorist
by

Tom Mulcair, the leader of the NDP and leader of the official opposition, has stated that Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who murdered a Canadian soldier standing guard at Canada’s War Memorial before storming Parliament Hill, is not a terrorist.

Instead, Mulcair characterizes Zehaf-Bibeau’s actions as “a criminal act.” Mulcair, “When you look at the history of the individual, attempts to get help, even to be in prison to get help if that turns out to be the case, I think that we’re not in the presence of a terrorist act in the sense that we would understand it.”

Days before the attack, Zehaf-Bibeau made a jihadist style video which the RCMP states that he was “driven by ideological and political motives.” On October 21st, Zehaf-Bibeau was overheard at the Westgate Mall in Ottawa asking a man, “If soldiers bombed your family, wouldn’t you want to kill them?” Less than 24 hours later, he kills a soldier standing guard at the Canadian War Memorial. He then proceeds to the Canadian Parliament, the very institution that authorized sending soldiers into Iraq one week earlier. This is a terrorist act exactly as we would understand it.

But in the world Tom Mulcair occupies there is no such thing evil unless you are a conservative who supports Stephen Harper. The words Islamic and terrorism will never collide in the same sentence. Mulcair’s attitude is no different than that of President Obama who concludes that the Fort Hood shootings are an act of workplace violence.

It is this unwillingness to accept reality as it is that rendered me unable to remain an NDPer and a man of the Left. It enabled me to open the door to the wisdom of conservatism. It is a wisdom that is often weary, but it is a wisdom that helps me understand the world in a way that the Barack Obamas and the Tom Mulcairs of the world will not consider.
