Marc Rowan, genius capitalist, worthy of Carnegie and Rockefeller in his understanding of philanthropy, going against his beloved alma mater, UPenn, for its failure of nerve against the pro-Hamas fascists. And now Bill Maher, with a short speech worthy of Churchill in its fierce, unapologetic championing of the West, its biting wit, its soaring nobility under the anguish.
Could it be that Rowan and Maher represent, at long last, the breakup of the Left’s dominance over the “narrative”? Could we be back at the “vital center” wherein conservatives and liberals, transcending their differences, stand shoulder to shoulder for freedom, for civilization? In which case, thank Israel for being so steadfast, so brave, so much like England under the Blitz, for saying, as Churchill did, that it would never, never surrender? I do not know. But here are a few great lines from Bill Maher, and let us hope his bold intervention in debates that in a normal American never should even be taking place, read by every American. Maher notes, starting fast out of the block, that “Western civilization is what gave the world pretty much every goddamn liberal precept that liberals are supposed to adore.”
“Individual liberties,” Maher continues, “scientific inquiry, rule of law, religious freedom, women’s rights, human rights, democracy, trial by jury, freedom of speech.” None of this is encouraged, let alone practiced, in any of the countries with protesters supporting the Hamas slogan about sweeping Jews out, “from the river to sea,” who include — this is important — plenty of people even in our own government who piously object to Hamas’ Oct. 7 invasion of Israel.
Maher continues, “The world would be a better place if it had more Israels”; we would not be putting words in his mouth to note that this obviously would mean the vast, overwhelming majority of the 2 billion Muslims living, almost all of them, under the boots of police state regimes.
Do regimes exist, said Maher, “where there are no laws against sexual harassment, spousal rape, domestic violence, homophobia, honor killings, or child marriage?” Is that what the liberals want? Is that what the Obama-Biden-Harris-Blinken gang wants? Then why not encourage Israel? Forcefully, unapologetically, fiercely. Tell them to seize land, not give it up. Colonize; don’t decolonize; colonization brings civilization and freedom.
Of course, that is moving too fast and asks for more problems than anyone needs. As one of the great Adams said, we’re better off, in the final analysis, not going abroad seeking dragons to destroy, much as we might like to. Maher says, “And for the record, the Jews didn’t colonize Israel or anywhere ever other than maybe Boca Raton.”
