Ben Stein's Diary

End Times

There is that feeling in the air.

Thursday
Strange day.

I awakened to a text from a close friend who is a devout Christian and who was so angry at the elite media that she could not sleep. “I am so frikkin’ sick of the media telling us that Islam is a ‘religion of peace,’” she said. “Look, people make fun of Jesus all of the time and I mean ALL of the time and we don’t kill them or harm them. But do anything at all that offends any Muslim and they start killing Christians and Jews — and then Obama apologizes for it. How long can this go on? The times of Tribulation are at hand.”

I got up, walked out on the deck and looked out at the perfect fall day over Lake Pendoreille. An absolutely perfect Fall day, blue skies, light breeze, just a slight chill in the air.

At breakfast, my wife suddenly said, “And then I beheld a red horse ridden by a man with a great sword….”

“What is that?” I asked her.

“It’s Revelation,” she said.

“I know, but where does that come from?”

“I just feel as if something big is about to happen,” she said. “Something feels like we’re about to live in a totally changed world. It feels like end times. Why are we apologizing to the Muslims? They’re killing and expelling their Christians and we don’t say a word. End times.”

I nodded. There is that feeling in the air.

I got another text from my very devout Christian friend. “Don’t tell me Obama isn’t a Muslim,” she said. “I don’t care what he calls himself, he’s a Muslim. That’s why he’s always apologizing to the Muslims.”

I think she’s bit off the mark here. If Obama says he’s a Christian, he’s a Christian.

I slept for a long time while listening to Mozart and the trains. Then I went to the mail box and got the latest news from the Obama/Biden campaign — oops, meant to say, “The New York Times.” Naturally, it was filled with rage against Mitt Romney There was very little vitriol against the killers in Libya, but plenty against Gov. Romney.

I sure hope that the people at the Romney campaign don’t read The NY Times. It is just endless propaganda against Republicans. Nonstop. We Republicans should campaign on our own issues. Mr. Obama’s idiot foreign policy is such an issue.

I went off to do my errands in Sandpoint. A visit to a super pleasant post office. A helpful clerk was patient with my terrible handwriting. Then a visit to the Alpine Shop to see my pal, Tim Farmin, who looked happy but told me my boat needed a new battery. Then, a visit to Ivano’s to pick up some grub for tonight.

At Ivano’s, I talked to a man who seethed with rage against Mr. Obama. He simply could not believe that Mr. Obama would make time to be among his Hollywood big shots but not make time to see Benjamin Netanyahu. “These are getting to be Biblical days,” he said. “The final days.”

"I think she's bit off the mark here. If Obama says he's a Christian, he's a Christian."

Mr. Stein, if I call myself a Martian, does that make me a Martian?

Aristocat| 9.14.12 @ 6:28AM

This is the end of Obama. His Muslim chickens are coming home to roost. Just like Jimmy Carter and our diplomats in Iran being taken hostage. Only this time they were killed, not just kidnapped.

Jack in Wi| 9.14.12 @ 7:41AM

Romney is tanking this election with his nonsense war talk. He can't defend any of his positions because he is incompetent, not quick on his feet, and inarticulate when he finally gets his act together. I have stated all along that foreign policy would decide this election. The people that Romney needs to win Paul supporters, independents, and young people are the most antiwar people in the country. I have begged him to moderate his message, get rid of his Neocon advisors and give us some hope for peace. Until we bring the troops home and end these wars there is no hope for fiscal solvency. Romney and his kids aren't going to fight these wars. The people that will are sick to death of endless wars and endless deployments for no sane reason.

Bob K| 9.14.12 @ 9:19AM

Get in line Jack! Or get up earlier. Your non sequiturs are getting tiresome.

Darin| 9.14.12 @ 9:41AM

The surest way to ensure peace is to prepare for war and make it clear to any potential adversary that you are ready, willing, and able.

Think of it this way. You lock your house and car. Why? If someone is determined to get in, they will. So why bother? Once Jack in Wi answers this, we'll see if he has an understanding of the inherent evil nature of man or if he views life through rose colored glasses.

Jacobite| 9.14.12 @ 3:03PM

In re an earlier post: if you say you're a Martian, that doesn't make you a Martian. But if you say you're a Ron Paul supporter, that definnitely makes you a Martian.

RichardJKelley| 9.14.12 @ 1:09PM

Hmmm. What do you think, Jack? We've got Libya, Egypt, and a pretty good start in Syria. Another 4 years of putting the Arab world in the hands of the Muslim Brotherhood? Yeah! There's the answer to bringing harmony in the Middle East! Ooooo, that war-mongering old Romney! Yeah! Give us 4 more years of Obama! THAT should fix it! (And he does it so eloquently!)

Petronius| 9.14.12 @ 2:11PM

Jack
The day the Muslims take over this country and they cut off your infantile head, I'll hold up cards awarding them style points. This country has been repeatedly attacked by these insaniacs and what happens? A doubling down on Liberal Cowardice. The only people the U.S. Government wants to fight are the last Real Traditional Americans who adhere to the culture of Henry V who kicked ass and took names. That the meek shall inherit the earth is total crap! Any Baptist fundie knows that. If we are conquered, the responsibility will be laid at the feet of our feminized, drooling, bed wetting urban populace who believe conflict resolution works. The first thing Romney needs to do domestically is get rid of the psychologists running education and have all the boys take boxing lessons as a required course. A reckoning is coming. Take your goodie goodie emotional investments and your Binkie someplace else.

Jack in Wi| 9.14.12 @ 2:30PM

The Muslims can't take this country over and neither could Hitler in his day. Who controls the media, the banking industry and stock market, the foreign policy and controls the vast majority of our political class using bribery, blackmail, and intimidation? They do all that with our own laundered foreign aid money. I will give you a hint. It isn't the Nazi's or the Muslims. Quit with all the nonsense. We can kick out the Muslims any time we want. Why should we? They have been mostly hardworking and good citizens. I don't believe in branding any group by the bad action of a small minority.

Jack in Wi| 9.14.12 @ 2:45PM

According to the sidebar on this site right now Romney is sinking like a rock in the swing states in the NBC poll. Zogby says according to his polling Romney is behind McCain at this time. Romney should be way ahead, with this economy. First he goes to England Poland and Israel and makes a fool of himself. Then he goes looking for more wars when the people he has to get to vote for him are against more wars. Besides that he can't even explain himself well on any of his issues. It is pretty bad when he can't even outshine old purple lips, who has been a disaster for the country. fire the neocons and change directions fast. Start attacking the Federal Reserve and Ben Bernake on a daily basis. It is time for some well deserved demagogry on the subject. Humphry in 1968 went from war to peace a couple weeks before the election and almost pulled it out. This election can be won but not by a warmonger.

Stkman| 9.14.12 @ 3:19PM

Anote to all posters regarding Jack in WI. Only a fool argues with an idiot.

Jack in Wi| 9.14.12 @ 3:38PM

Well you must be a fool Stkman because you have argued with me many times. The psycho Psychiatrist Occam calls for mass murder and genocide of millions everyday on this site. He just did it again in the comment below. He belongs locked in a room in his own mental wards. You will see that both these boys just give out name calling and nonsense. Jack regards the sodomization of our US Ambassador before he was killed as a job perk.

He is a coward and a 4-F.

The correct answer to this problem is to consider, "What would Alexander the Great do?" The answer is obvious.

TLP| 9.15.12 @ 5:06PM

Indeed.

What would Pershing do?

What would Sherman do?

What would Patton do?

What would Truman do?

And, what would Reagan do?

GOD works in Mysterious ways.

Romney UP by 3.

Nuff said.

confusedamericancitizen| 9.15.12 @ 11:02AM

I am a parent and hate fighting of any kind. That said, you don't "talk it out" with bullies. You don't take your ball and go home, thinking that the issue is resolved. I told my first son not to fight, to turn the other cheek. Then he met a bully that saw that as a challenge. After that, I told my kids not to throw the first punch, but make sure the second punch is the last punch thrown. It worked out much better and my kids weren't subjected to very many fights. I'm all about peace, but sometimes you have to throw a mighty 2nd punch.

DidITweetThat| 9.23.12 @ 6:47PM

I learned, if there is going to be a fight, get the first punch in and make it the last.

Oh, now I sound like Bush.

Ralph Novy| 9.17.12 @ 10:42PM

Screw these chickenhawks criticizing you here.

Bob K doesn't wouldn't know a non sequitur if it logically spit in his face.

Darin just wants to "hunker down with guns" and wait for "the enemy."

They're paranoid fools, Jack. Don't worry about 'em.

Some goomer the other day at a public function I attended started talking about "them" coming up the Chicago River/Canal from the Mississippi into Lake Michigan. I naturally assumed he was talking about Asian Carp. But NOOOOOO.....he was actually talking about Chinese troops!

Oh, so this is "End Times" Mr. Aristocat? I don't think so. What the end of your times will be is when the Occupy Movement tweaks their sit-ins from Wall Street to the neighborhoods of your favorite politicians (e.g., Cantor, Boehner, Ryan). Do you get the picture mister? It will be 20,000 people laying siege to your streets—no one in and no one out! This will be the "People's" day bro!
http://lyneussfields.blogspot......their.html

Conservative Bob| 9.17.12 @ 3:39PM

Only in areas of limited 2nd amendment freedoms.

Send numbers of "occupiers" into peaceful neighborhoods I am familiar with and you will have a much different picture than you wishfully imagine.

Occupy has not encountered much resistance because of where it has chosen to play, where mostly sympathetic police forces at the behest of city leadership has sought to manage rather than stop the antics.

The thing you 'radicals' don't quite appreciate is the degree to which those of us that work hard for what we have will go to defend what is ours.

You takers are used to someone else providing your needs, mom, the gov.... we have been getting up early solving problems and making things happen all of our lives, it is not just habit, it is in every fiber of our being.

For the roll out of bed at 10 to face the day crowd this is hard to understand, but trust me, if the day you describe comes to pass you will see the difference in an instant.

Lyneuss Fields | 9.17.12 @ 7:59PM

First off jackass, nobody but you has said anything about violence. And, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled all citizens, excluding idiot stinks—too stupid to breathe—like you, have the right to possess arms. If you knuckle-dragging idiots can comprehend my hyperlink above, maybe a call to occupy your neighborhoods is exactly what America deserves and needs to affect some "real change".

TLP,

It's amazing the number of radicals who are part of, or have passed through his life.

It's like a Who's Who of radical extremists from the 20'th century.

You could play the Six Degrees of Separation game, only it's more like three or four degrees of separation between him and practically every radical the past hundred years.

And yet the mainstream media tries to sell this guy as some "moderate", yet, they can never tell us WHEN he made this Moderate Conversion because it never happened.

It is truly astonishing what is going on in this country right now. If it were a movie where I could watch it and go home, it would be entertaining. The problem is we are living it and cannot "go home".

Primary and general election opponents both have sealed court records leaked to the press. The same press that couldn't care less about O'bwana's far-left terrorist friends and his anti-American preacher. This is conspiracy-theory stuff, but they say that even paranoids can have real enemies. Go back to '74. CONTEST.

TinaB| 9.14.12 @ 2:18PM

Shakespeare said all the world is a stage and we are all players. It is a cosmic drama, and the Creator has apparently chosen to allow His offspring to have a choice themselves. This is the playing out of our family lives, our love lives, our work lives, our play lives, with Him or without Him as the Director.

However, as nature abhors a vacuum, someone else, Lucifer, once an angel of Light, now, by choice, the angel of Darkness, comes in and rearranges things. The set, the designated players, and on and on according to how pliable a man is, are now determined by the Darkness. Once that choice is made, there may never be another opportunity, or invitation to choose. Now is the hour. The time is at hand.

TLP| 9.14.12 @ 3:28PM

With all due respect, I believe Valerie is his 'handler'. Who do you think is running the White House and administration while Obama and Biden are out of the state running for re-election? Do some research on her and I think you will see what I mean. It is one sad mess any way you look at it!

TLP| 9.14.12 @ 3:27PM

I have consulted with the Judges, and "Handler" is an acceptable answer.

Jack in Wi| 9.14.12 @ 8:12AM

If it is the end of times Ben, it is time to get baptized quick. I see a hidden Christian in you. It is time to act on it now. It might do you a world of good. Keep reading the New Testament. It is among God's greatest gifts to the world.

Darin| 9.14.12 @ 9:43AM

As well-intentioned as this is, baptism by itself is meaningless. It's fine to do, but it has nothing to do with salvation.

FBX1999| 9.14.12 @ 10:57AM

Well, actually that's not true. Look at John 3:5, where Jesus says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." See also Romans 6:3–4; Colossians. 2:12–13; Titus 3:5.

Jesus did not tell his apostles to go forth and give out altar calls. Instead, he commanded them to "baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit".

Baptism + Faith = Salvation

Boar Hunter| 9.14.12 @ 12:30PM

I think that what Darin is saying is that baptism in Jacks case in meaningless.

There will be many at the end who say "Lord, Lord."

Baptism absent faith is merely a dip in the pool.

Jack claims he is a believer in God, so does Satan.

Jack hates Gods people and curses them daily. Jack refuses to accept God's warning concerning those who curse his people.

Jack in Wi| 9.14.12 @ 3:47PM

My God, Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ the Prince of Peace, has said. " Blessed are the Peacemakers. Those who live by the sword will die by the sword. Love your neighbor as yourselves. Do on to others as you would have them do on to you. TheTruth will set you free." That is my mission here to keep spreading the truth and pushing for peace is a hostile and barren area. Mr. Boar Hunter is among the most vile and murderous people here. Yet I pray for his repentance and salvation everyday. Repent and come over to the Lord. Love your neighbor and quit with all the hate. Shalom

Boar Hunter| 9.14.12 @ 5:26PM

How funny, that you, who shakes his fist in defiance of God daily tries to quote the bible to shame me.

You, a hater of Jews who roots for the destruction of Israel says Shalom.

As you are the most aggressively ignorant self absorbed hypocrite I have ever encountered I am certain the irony of your hypocrisy is lost on you.

Jack in Wi| 9.16.12 @ 12:17PM

I love the Jews and want them following God's laws. Israel was founded and has been run by Atheists, Communists, Socialists, and Facists who are all a pack of murderers thieves, liars, and criminals. If they were following God's laws they would love their neigbors as themselves, as the Torah demands. They would follow the 10 Commandments witch forbid murder, theft, lies, and coveting of neighbors property. There are rightous Jews in Israel but they haven't got much to say about how it is run.

Nick| 9.16.12 @ 6:54PM

Israel was founded and has been run by Atheists, Communists....blah, blah, blah....
- Jackboot the Nazi

Then, why does the Holy See have diplomatic relations with Israel, you illiterate, anti-Semitic rube?

Jack in Wi| 9.16.12 @ 8:35PM

Just this week the Vaticans chief official in the Holyland gave a scathing condemnation of the Israeli government and it's educational system which it accused of hatemongering against Christians and muslims. He said. " If the Jews want the respect of others they must respect others as well." this was in response to the desecration of a Catholic monastary in Israel. there have been numerous attacks on Christian churches and mosqes. If it was a synagogue somewere it would get worlwide attention. The Vatican also condemned the attacks on clergy of the Christian denominations who are spit upon on a daily basis by even young children. Christian and Muslim archealogical sites are destroyed on regular basis.

The Vatican did not recognize Israel for decades even though the Popes tried to have good relations with the Israeli's. The Knesset sent a orchestra to play for the 80th birthday of Pope Pius the 12th for example. The reason that the recogintion did not come until later was concern that the situation between the Arabs and Jews would only get worse if the Vatican recognized. Israel. Israel has never lived up to it's agreements with the Holy See. Check for yourself. I am too busy now. It is well documented.

Nick| 9.17.12 @ 12:37AM

The Vatican is a building (or hill,) not an organization, Jackboot the Nazi.
And, liberal clerics are constantly releasing bogus statements that have not been cleared by the Holy See. Only dupes are fooled by them.

Try reading what Blessed Pope John Paul II had to say about the Shoah & Catholic-Jewish relations:

http://www.vatican.va/roman_cu.....ah_en.html

The document also apologizes for those Catholics who didn't do enough during the Holocaust, and those who were actively anti-Semitic.

So, as a Catholic, I would like to apologize to all the Jews, who post here, for Jackboot. As Occam's Tool has mentioned many times, he recognizes that Jackboot doesn't represent the typical, faithful Catholic.

TLP| 9.15.12 @ 5:12PM

Indeed.

KyMouse| 9.15.12 @ 8:35AM

FBX1999, if someone puts his faith (obedient trust) in Jesus but is killed on the way to his baptism, will he go to heaven or to hell?

If he goes to heaven, then baptism isn't necessary for salvation. If He goes to hell, then trusting in Jesus, by faith, isn't enough for salvation. Doesn't that go against the Scriptures which say that salvation is a free gift (Rom. 6:23) received by faith (Eph. 2:8-9)? Yes, it does.

Saying that baptism is necessary for salvation is dangerous because it is saying that there is something we must do to complete salvation. That's wrong -- see Galatians 2:21 and 5:4.

Jack in Wi| 9.16.12 @ 12:09PM

Look up baptism of desire and baptism of martyrdom. That will answer your question. This man has been baptized by both methods.

Nick| 9.16.12 @ 7:18PM

Don't listen to Jackboot the Nazi, KyMouse.
It is called baptism of blood and baptism of desire. Your scenario would fall under the latter.

Christ said that "he that believes AND is baptized shall be saved" (Mk 16:16). Saint Peter said that baptism "now saves you" (1 Pet. 3:21). Saint Paul was told by Ananias to "arise and be baptized" (Acts 9:18, 22:16), even though Christ chose Paul Himself, and Paul accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.

Christians do not say that baptism "completes salvation," we say that it begins the road to salvation. Because it is a rite of Christian initiation. Salvation isn't completed until we enter the Beatific Vision, which is Heaven.

The verses from Galatians that you cite are referring to the Mosaic Law (and the numerous additions by the Pharisees,) which Christians are no longer bound by.
God Bless!

TinaB| 9.14.12 @ 2:37PM

What the heck is a hidden Christian. I have never heard of such nonsense. If you believe it, you walk it and breathe it, and carry the Good News at all times. It is not a hidden agenda, like the other phony religions are. You shine that light, for all to see.

Stkman| 9.14.12 @ 3:24PM

I beleive Mr. Stein is a Jew. He has no need to baptised. For all we know he is one of the 12,000 of the twelve tribes. He may rise before we even know of the second coming.

Jack in Wi| 9.14.12 @ 3:54PM

He needs to be baptized if he believes. I believe a rightous and honest Jew, Muslim or Pagan can be saved. But once someone thinks he should become a Christian, because he believes, he should act on it. Now I have been following Ben for many years and think he has some sound and rightous tendencies. He still has a long way to go, in my opinion. The time is short for all of us.

mzk| 9.15.12 @ 1:39PM

Here this Ben? A man who works for the extermination of your people, whom he no longer believes are chosen, want you to convert to Christianity.

By their fruits shall you know them, indeed.

Jack in Wi| 9.16.12 @ 12:31PM

I believe the Jews were chosen for the most important missions God gave to anyone. They were given the job of telling the world about the One True God, bringing forth God's 10 Commandments, as a moral code for the world, and finally to bring forth the Messiah Of The Whole World. Their mission has been completed for 2000 years. Their mission now is to love their neighbors as themselves and to follow Jesus and his teachings. If they can't accept Jesus, then at least they shoud follow the Torah which also says. Love your neighbor as yourselves and follow the 10 Commandents. It is time to get with God's progam. The time is short for all of us. Follow God's laws and work for peace.

My thoughts exactly. Ben was actually on target for a couple of days, but now he's fallen off the Reality Wagon again.

A co-worker who up until now has said not a word this year about politics or the election, commented on the Embassy attacks. Said 'where are all the moderate Muslims?" My answer was that there aren't any, and unless we give the lying Muslim POTUS the bum's rush come November 6, America is finished. His response was that he wasn't entirely sure if I am right, but neihter could he say I am definitely wrong.

Ralph Novy| 9.17.12 @ 10:51PM

I'm not too inclined to contradict a foaming-at-the-mouth lunatic either, pal.

Is that the technique you used to woo your wife?

Sheesh.

TinaB| 9.14.12 @ 12:50PM

Thanks Gerald. The Lord Himself said that He will someday say to many who call themselves His followers, "Get away from me, I hardly knew you."

Christian means Christ follower, not for an hour, or for a day, but all the Way to the Cross. I say that for you, Ben Stein. If someone tells you they're a Jew, does that mean that they are? Religiously, I mean?

I reckon you would check out their walk. Does it match their talk? Observing BHOs walk for the 8 to 10 years it can be verified, anyway, I can tell you straight up. The man is no Christian. NO CHRISTIAN. Got it, Ben? Just ask those authentic Christian friends of yours.

mzk| 9.15.12 @ 1:37PM

Unfortunately in the US it is all self-indentification. It is the same with Jews; there are plenty of people who are not Jewish by the calssic definition, yet they are referred to as Jews. Furthermore, the left-wing denominations have denied that the source of the Law is revelation at Mount sinai, which is the very basis of the religion.

Obama is a left-wing Christian. This means, like in left-wing Judaism, his Bible is the Democratic party platform. So Ben is not incorrect; it's a matter of semantics, is all.

Ralph Novy| 9.17.12 @ 10:54PM

Of course it's a matter of semantics, mzk.

But apparently you don't know what "semantics" means.

So everything you said was just nonsense.

Go. Read. Think. THEN write.

OKC08GT500| 9.14.12 @ 1:40PM

By their fruits shall ye know them. 0bama is bearing very bitter fruit and is obviously not a Christian. One of 0bama's prime objectives is the establishment of a Middle East Caliphate. He is our first enemy-President.

KyMouse| 9.15.12 @ 8:11AM

I could say that I am Queen Elizabeth II, but who else says that I am? What are their credentials for claiming to know?

When Obama claims to be Christian, I look at the other people who say that he is -- Jeremiah Wright, for example.

Matthew 7:16 points out that we can recognize believers in Jesus by the "fruits" their faith produces. Well, Obama's fruit is often quite rotten.

For example, as an Illinois senator, he voted against requiring abortionists to provide medical care for babies who survive abortion. A baby who manages to stay alive after being sliced and diced could be placed with a loving, adoptive family -- but Obama voted against giving those children of God a chance.

Information about Obama's abortion votes can be found at
http://www.jillstanek.com/2008.....ction-act/

Bad fruit, indeed.

Ralph Novy| 9.17.12 @ 10:58PM

Stephie| 9.14.12 @ 6:20AM

Ben, I hate to differ with you, but obama is NOT a Christian. He may not be a full blown muslim but sir, he is no Christ loving man.
And your wife is right. Something big is going to happen. I just hope to God that it's Romney beating obama in a landslide election.
I'm about speechless at anyone who would even think of voting for this man.

CrackerHound| 9.14.12 @ 10:43AM

Exactly Stephie...It's why I always say the polls MUST be wrong. How could Obama be leading over an empty chair much less a succesful businessman who by all accounts seems squeaky clean and extremly honest.

Seriously...you could not have failed anymore and in all aspects the way Obama has managed to do it...complete, epic fail!...and I'm supposed to believe he is at 50% in the polls?

TinaB| 9.14.12 @ 2:44PM

Oh Stephie, I am so there. Last week a close colleague broke it to me that she's working for BHOs campaign from hell. A fellow Hispanic (duh!) asked her to sign up, and she, "just wanted to get involved in something". The thought of this repulsed me so much I can't imagine talking to her till after November. I am supposed to join her and some others to celebrate another BHO supporter's birthday in a couple of hours. Can't face the thought of it.

It doesn't work like that. Simply saying you're a Christian does not always mean you are a Christian. He doesn't act like a Christian.

TLP| 9.14.12 @ 7:53AM

C'mon Kitty. Stop hating Black People.

As Brit Hume and Krauthammer, and every other Establishment Republican Pussy, are wont to say: "I believe him when he says he's a Christian."

I believed him when he said that he was Born in Hawaii, even though he has a Connecticut Soc. Sec. Number.

I believed him when he said that "We will Create Hundreds of Thousands of Shovel Ready Infrastructure Jobs with this Stimulus Money".

I believed him when he said that he's the Best Friend that Israel has ever had, and that Jerusalem is, and ever shall be, the Capitol of Israel, never to be separated again.

I believed Him when he told us that "The Economy is Roaring Back". When he tells us that he's Created Millions of New Jobs. When he says that we have never been more Respected in the World. When he says that America, once again, is loved by the World. And, when he tells us that "There are no Red States or Blue States. Only the United States, and if you elect me, I will Unify this Country with a New Kind of Politics, free from all of the Partisan rigamoro, and work with members of Both Parties, for the American People".

I believed him when he said that Bill Ayers was "Just a guy in my neighborhood", and that, in 20 Years of sitting in Wright's Black Hate Church "I never heard Reverend Wright say those kinds of things".

Did I mention that he Loves the Jews?

Oh yeah.

Loves them.

He said so.

Appleby| 9.14.12 @ 6:32AM

Many, many people in this essentially God-free country of Canada are also saying uneasily that these are the end times. Our Prime Minister, who is what passes for "conservative" up here (Moderate Democrat, essentially) is pulling our people out of the Mideast and kicking theirs out of Canada as quickly as he can, and has publically stood up with Netanyahu. Canada continues to pretend that we are not in danger "since nobody knows where we are", refusing to admit that, as in the little song in "West Side Story," "everyone there '[has] moved here. Canada has suddenly realized that there are masses of people who came here fraudulently and cannot be found, and are in the process of trying to round them up and boot them out -- but of course being Canada they still keep sending them welfare after they decamp for their Homelands...and there is no border, really, between us and America...think about that, boys and girls. These are indeed the End Times and if you are one of those that sneer at Jesus, you'd better start reading up. The rest of us continue to watch and pray.

Ralph Novy| 9.17.12 @ 11:26PM

Right, Appleby.

If your prime minister was a true "conservative," he'd be calling out the Mounties to club the illegal immigrants like baby seals.

If you think -- for one bloody second -- that Jesus would be on your side in this matter, you're flippin' looney.

YOU are the one "sneering at Jesus," guy/gal.

Zeph 2:1-3

Gather together—yes, gather together,
you shameless nation.
2 Gather before judgment begins,
before your time to repent is blown away like chaff.
Act now, before the fierce fury of the Lord falls
and the terrible day of the Lord's anger begins.
3 Seek the Lord, all who are humble,
and follow his commands.
Seek to do what is right
and to live humbly.
Perhaps even yet the Lord will protect you—
protect you from his anger on that day of destruction.

Zeph 3:6-8

6 "I have wiped out many nations,
devastating their fortress walls and towers.
Their streets are now deserted;
their cities lie in silent ruin.
There are no survivors—
none at all.
7 I thought, 'Surely they will have reverence for me now!
Surely they will listen to my warnings.
Then I won't need to strike again,
destroying their homes.'
But no, they get up early
to continue their evil deeds.
8 Therefore, be patient," says the Lord.
"Soon I will stand and accuse these evil nations.
For I have decided to gather the kingdoms of the earth
and pour out my fiercest anger and fury on them."

The world has always had anxiety from the ancients to the Romans and the West in the years that we call modern history.
And now the world is smaller and nations more shaky. I never put faith in politicians because most are not worthy of respect. Too much trading favors for advantage for them, not the people.
I am familiar with biblical prophesy and Daniel and Revelation and the range of apocryphal thought in the pre-Christian and Christian times.
I too think we live in desperate times and likely something startling is going to happen soon. However, I remember the Acts of the Apostles 1:6-8.
The disciples ask the same questions Ben Stein's wife and others are asking. Just be watchful and alert. Repent or turn from sin.
Isaiah 26:3 is a resting prayer that calms our fears and sustains our daily walk.

Back in the early 1970’s my older brother and I were having a discussion about world events. He brought up the subject of Israel and their continuous struggle with their neighbors. He said that one-day they would have to stand-alone. I said, stand alone? What about the United States? We are their friend and ally. He said the day would come when the United States would be powerless. We will, at this time, be nothing but another 3rd world country. Our military will be weak and our political class will not want to get involved. I said to him “What the hell have you been drinking?” He said, ok, we’ll see. I said, if this happens I’ll buy you a steak dinner. He said, at that time you probably will not have the money to buy a steak dinner.

With all that has transpired since Obama has been in office and with his connection to the Muslim world, it certainly looks like Israel will have to stand alone. And I’m not sure that I’ll have the money to buy that steak.

All this is to influence the election and set the ground for yet another war in the ME. As I have said repeatedly a war with Iran will not enhance Israel's security by one jot. The simple fact is that the pedophile pervert you sand monkeys worship was born almost 600 years after the birth, life death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our savior.

Your people are the only convincing argument for darwin, as you have not yet fully evolved into civilized humans.

You and the other primitives are the reason the media is "islamophobic" as the liberals in media are simply afraid of you.

Muslims are sexually repressed sub-humans who mutilate their own women's genitals and murder their own children in the same houses where they raise them.

Muslims sodomized and murdered an American Ambassador we sent to your people.

You are devoted to a "religion" that is comprised of violent sexual deviants and homosexuals.

Your answer to anything is to kill it, wait I meant sodomize it and then kill it and you think your reward is to rape virgins when you are sent to heaven.

You cannot co-exsist with anyone, anywhere, even each other.

You need to be eradicated.

Alas that will not happen in this life, where the one true God rules and is using you sub-humans to bring about his apocalypse.

Islam will be eradicated when God casts all muslims into the lake of fire to burn in hell for all eternity with Allah (who is satan) and Mohammed his prophet.

John786| 9.14.12 @ 2:29PM

Mr boar,
Your cage is definitely rattled. forgot to have your cereal this morning. Worship should be directed to the creator not the messenger. Comprende. Muslims are very good generous people. Model citizens. I suggest you get out a bit. Maybe, even get to know one or two muskims. It shouldn't be difficult there are two Billion Muslims in the world.

Boar Hunter| 9.14.12 @ 3:12PM

You say worship should be directed to the creator? If you burn a bible what do I care? It does not affect my relationship with the one true God or my worship of him. You people are the ones who riot and burn every time someone perceives a slight to the Koran (Which I burned on 9-11) or draws a picture of your pedophile prophet.

As far as getting to know "muskims?" I do know muslims.

I know what they did on 9-11 and I watched them celebrate the murder of 3000 of my countrymen in the street.

I know they sodomized and murdered the Ambassador America sent them.

I know what they are doing in the world even as you write your lies.

Model citizens? That is hilarious. You cannot name one place in the entire world, in the entire history of the world where muslims have existed in peace. Muslims are a scourge and a blight on humanity. Sexually repressed, violent cowards who kill with bombs or when empowered by the anonymity of a mob.

They kill their neighbors, they kill each other each other and as far as their being a billion or two of them, so what?

You useless primitives cannot even get rid of Israel who you long to destroy. You are merely cockroaches feeding on the labor of others.

When Israel takes out the Iranian nuke capacity next month to the shock, horror and surprise of the libs who say it cannot be done, my family will be the ones celebrating.

Stkman| 9.14.12 @ 3:55PM

@John786,
Muslims are generous? Instead of putting an end to the misery of their own people by properly housing them and feeding them they pocket all the money they get from oil. Yes, they are building the tallest building and some expensive housing in some areas. All of that is for members of royalty and foreigners.
Most of the problems we've seen for the last fifty years center around the Palestinians. Do they look any better off to you John? They sure don't look better off to me. No one of their own kind does a damn thing for them, but for some reasonthe Arabs think it is the responsibility of the United States to care for them. Well we have, we've fed them and supported them and what have we got for it. We got a big fat know when Isreal agreed to all their terms. Everytime they have been offered peace or land or both they have turned it down.
They are used by other Arabs and Muslims as a pawn.

I have never thought Obama was a practicimg Muslim because he thinks he is God, and I can't imagine him worshipping any other. But Islam certainly get preferential treatment from him.

Kwan| 9.14.12 @ 9:08AM

We are definitely living in the "end times" of sanity if we keep electing fraudulent imposters like Barack Obama to be the leader of our country and the free-world. It would seem that besides having an agenda to destroy the United States, Obama also has an agenda to destroy Israel. Well we can't accuse Obama of being unable to multi-task.

Louis Jenkins| 9.14.12 @ 9:23AM

Dear Mr. Stein:

Yes I know that you are Jewish. Therefore, it must be hard to write an article condemning Obama, but you managed to. H0wever, if Obama says he is a Christian comment does not mean that he is. Muslims may lie to further their cause, the Koran says so. But maybe all politicians are Muslim because they all stretch the truth, or as in Obama's case, lie like there will be no retribution. However, the main theme of the article is pretty good. You're improving.

C Smith | 9.14.12 @ 10:57AM

"I came to my Christian faith later in life and it was because the precepts of Jesus Christ spoke to me in terms of the kind of life that I would want to lead. Being my brother's and sisters’ keeper, treating others as they would treat me..." (President Barack Hussein Obama during a pre-election campaign stop in Albuquerque, N.M.).

Remember little red riding hood and that one particularly intense moment when she says: "Grandmother, what big teeth you have"? No matter how hard the big bad wolf tried, there are some things a wolf just can't fake.

Same with President Obama today. Even with an army of ghost writers scripting the answer for an obviously staged question, faking faith just isn't easy. Here are just a few of the words of Scripture Team Obama got woefully backwards:

"Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them..." (Matthew 7:12).

Ben,
I'm sort of an expert on the Bible. Fortunately, I could throw an unhittable knuckle-ball so got t go to Baylor University. (Jerusalem on The Brazos, smile).
I majored in Family Counseling (Baptist/New Testament based). I sat at the feet of some the finest Biblical scholars of our day, many of which I know you know. My old testament prof was Dr. Kyle Yates.
He was the guy who helped the Israelis "re-birth" Hebrew as a spoken, living language.
(He was actually an archeologist by specialty and on a dig early in his career,in (today's) Israel they came upon the keys to that language on "King David's Arch".

I digressed there just to assure you that I did indeed sit at the feet of our finest.

Last Days:
Perhaps the most powerful understanding I walked away with is that nobody...nobody ...can claim more than a "hunch" as to how those days start and play out.
It can be fun to speculate and compare the different visions and prophecies, but the overall message is to be clean and ready at any time.

I do know one thing for sure, if Jesus returns with a shout, then Christians leave the world in a heartbeat.

Sir, that in itself would bring on the biggest catastrphe in history. Think about it a minute. Other than your righteous Jewish friends, we Christians are the only people you have any reason to trust in the world.

Ken (Old Texican)| 9.14.12 @ 10:59AM

If next Thursday morning, say, you turn on the TV, and hundreds of inexplicable jetliner crashes have occurred....or similar "newsy" events of similar magnitude. That might be your first clue.

Your Messiah has come in glory and power, the Christians are gone, but you stiff necked knotheads are going to have to endure at least part of the tribulation until the bad guys actually kill you I suppose.
(contiued from above)
That would be a pretty good thing to avoid until you have a chance to repent of your prior disbelief, and welcome Jesus back to the earth.

Ben Stein does well when he speaks of the passing of pets, sunrises, and his dialog of his neighbors and friends is very insightful. However, he voted for Obama and has supported every “stimulus” the Marxist architect has conjured up. He is entertaining but lamenting about the escaped horses after fools like him opened the barn door is somewhat disingenuous.

No, Ben. Just because Obama says he's a Christian does not make him a Christian. As you and we all know, Obama says many things that are not true. Why would you suppose that on the matter of his religion, he would tell the truth, particularly since the truth just might sink his badly listing ship?

The advancement of medicine has outstripped the ability of the West to pay for the medicine of the elderly. Keeping old people alive when normally they would have died has driven up social security costs. Combine present actuarial tables with modern medicine and budgetary disaster is assured no matter whether Obama or Romney is elected in 2012.

How to solve the problem. The drastic solution is to end both medicare and social security at 80 years of age. If you've saved and kept your body well, you will survive. If you've not saved and you've let your body go to pot, then you'd better hope to have someone other than the government to mooch off of.

Caring for our elderly doesn't need to be in the constitution. Have you ever heard of honoring your parents? It's what decent people do. This isn't about taking care of lazy welfare queens. We are talking about the elderly. When most of them came up there were no social nets to help them. They left us a wonderful country. Look what we've done to it. Geez, Derek, my parents we not exactly the best parents around but I do love them and want them to be well. I can't imagine what would lead you to even think of not taking care of our elderly citizens.

It took until the first paragraph to find the errors in this argument. "Anything at all that offends any Muslim and they start killing Christians and Jews" -- actually all of the evidence points to the killing of our Ambassador as an Al Qaeda 9/11 act with the theory that American would be naive enough to believe it was protest for the propaganda film. "-- and then Obama apologizes," if you can find a statement of apology from Obama for this even in the Spectator or Foxnews, you would be the first. Who did apologize was the Libyan Ambassador to us. I noticed this phenomena of "End Times" over 50 years ago. The dying-off generation of Christians has for 2012 years in a row, have been convinced that the world would end in THEIR LIFETIMES!
Anything that happens for 2012 years in a row is a "constant".
Whether it's true or not,matters not...it IS a CONSTANT.
This "always happens" is based on the SAME two emotional thoughts/opinions.
1st: dying-off-ers are scared
2nd: the dying-off-ers are convinced that all the young people are simply too stupid to figure out how to live once all the SMART PEOPLE are dead...referring to themselves of course...as the SMART PEOPLE.
I have no idea whether the end times "are here" or even if there will be an end times before 9 billion years in the future when the Earth will be burned-up BY the Sun, before being swallowed by the Sun, before it's implosion.
The "Olders" being convinced the world MUST end when all the SMART people are dead, is nothing but pathetic arrogance of their acquired-through-aging-perfected-genius.

MarkS| 9.14.12 @ 1:15PM

"I think she's bit off the mark here. If Obama says he's a Christian, he's a Christian."

I do to Ben, but of the warm dishwater, metaphorical-only type. For his true religion is Liberalism. But more germane in this latest crisis is what is he REALLY to the "muslim world"?

Well, Obama once explained he "had converted to Christianity". Merriam-Webster’s definition is- a: bring over from one belief, view, or party to another b: to bring about a religious conversion in. His was a very curious, deliberate formulation because if one is merely an unbeliever, a heathen, he doesn't "convert". He's not switching from one belief to another but coming into a state of belief from unbelief. In Christian parlance such folk "accepts" or "comes to" Jesus as his Savior and Lord. At least that’s how us normal Christians put it. But Obama said "convert" so the question becomes "convert" from what? What was he BEFORE?

We know he spent some time in madrassas and his father was a muslim. Could it be Obama was indeed muslim before “converting to Christianity”? If so, like you Ben, I take him at his word now but to islam he is worse than a dog, lower than the low, he is an...APOSTATE deserving only implacable hatred and death. Could this be what’s driving what looks increasingly like a personal hatred of Obama across the muslim world? Are the 7th century, gay killing, women enslaving, weird-beards driven even madder than ever that the Great Satan is now led by an Apostate?

Remember Mr. Stein that Obama has spoken in public about his Muslim "faith" and has also publicly stated that his place would be with the Muslims in bad times. He also couldn't find time in his "busy schedule" to speak with Netanyahu, but was able to squeeze Beyonce and Jay Z in somehow. Disgraceful to the nines.

Richard S.| 9.14.12 @ 1:24PM

I wish conservatives would get their heads out of the clouds with all the religious allusions to End Times and Muslim presidents.

That is just lazy thinking.

Here are the facts: Obama is a horrible president. He is an embarrassment to this country. His foreign policy is a disgrace.

Our country has been under relentless attack by Muslim terrorists for the last 2 days, an American ambassador was sodomized and murder, and Barack Obama is getting a free pass in the liberal media.

How do you deal with that in a democratic society?

Call him a Muslim and start wishing for the Rapture and Apocalypse?

If that is what the conservative movement is really about, then I might as well move to a foreign country and give up.

No, we need to fight back, win elections, do what needs to be done to change the evil instead of wallowing in lazy resignation.

The only thing I can think of worst than a liberal is a conservative who talks about Muslim fairies and End Times and doesn't deal with the cold hard reality of politics.

vtwin| 9.14.12 @ 2:17PM

Hell of an epiphany, realizing your comrades are a bunch of idiots?

Pablo| 9.14.12 @ 1:32PM

This would be a funny article. You're reconciling yourselves to a likely re-election of Obama and formulating your response. Will you reassess the extremism that drove independents to Obama? Will you reassess your vigorous support for the 1% over the vast majority of Americans?

Why no! Republicans lack the maturity for such an exercise. Instead, let's just say we were right all along and now it's the end of the world. That's a helluva lot better than having to eat a bit of crow. That is, if you're a republican or 5 years old.

In order to hold up this delusion, you have to believe in a few things that are demonstrably false:

1) Obama apologized to Muslims who attacked the embassies. First, it was the embassy that released a statement, not Obama, and it wasn't an apology but a call for cooler heads to prevail. And it occurred before the embassies were attacked.

2) Republican presidents have never apologized to Muslims. Fact is, George W issued apology-like statements to Muslims, which you can read all about here: http://www.salon.com/2012/09/1.....o_muslims/

3) Somehow Obama's policies have overwhelmingly favored Muslims, even though he's blown up hundreds of them (including women and children) from remote control airplanes and oversaw the assassination of bin Laden.

As I said, this would be a funny article, were it not for the fact that you're all so desperate, some of you are bound to go truly crazy if Obama is re-elected and do something hideous.

Richard S.| 9.14.12 @ 1:42PM

Pablo-

What do we know is true:

1: The US has been attacked in multiple places in the world. An embassy or consulate is considered sovereign US territory.

2. Our ambassador was sodomized and murdered.

3. Our flag was desecrated on the anniversary of 911.

4. The US embassy in Egypt made an announcement apologizing for hurting the feelings of Muslims. Since you are a liberal, you are evidently ignorant of the fact that embassies take direction from the White House.

5. Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama's hand-chosen diplomat, runs around saying that Islam is a great religion on starts making excuses for free speech and constitutional liberty, as if being free was some sort of moral deficiency that we need to apologize for.

6. In the final analysis, Barack Obama is weak and stupid and has gotten a free ride on the backs of our worthless liberal media over his feckless foreign policy.

And the truth is Romney should have come out even stronger against Obama's limp wristed stance.

Pablo| 9.14.12 @ 1:52PM

I welcome the opportunity to point out more details of your delusion:

=====================
The US embassy in Egypt made an announcement apologizing for hurting the feelings of Muslims.
=====================

That never occurred. The embassy's statement distanced itself from the film by saying that it doesn't condone those kinds of statements (which is objectively true). It was not an apology but a clarification. You can provide no examples of that statement that constitute an apology.

Further, by listing that one as #4 after the murder of the ambassador and the rest, you're trying to suggest that the embassy statement was in response to those things. It was not. But you're trying to pretend it does because it feeds your delusion.

=====================
Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama's hand-chosen diplomat, runs around saying that Islam is a great religion on starts making excuses for free speech and constitutional liberty, as if being free was some sort of moral deficiency that we need to apologize for.
=====================

There are no examples of this.

The embassy and Clinton statements are not apologies. Since you're a republican, I accept that you truly do not understand the concept of an apology, so let me explain.

An apology, using a variety of wording, ultimately communicates the idea "I was wrong and I'm sorry for having done that." This statements were not that. These statements were "We had nothing to do with that shitty video, so quit directing your bullshit at us." That's not an apology, that's a clarification

They didn't apologize for the video, nor did they apologize for the 1st amendment rights that made the video possible. They apologized for nothing.

Pablo| 9.14.12 @ 1:52PM

=====================
In the final analysis, Barack Obama is weak and stupid and has gotten a free ride on the backs of our worthless liberal media over his feckless foreign policy.
=====================

This conclusion does not follow given the fraudulent points you've used to support it.

=====================
And the truth is Romney should have come out even stronger against Obama's limp wristed stance.
=====================

Funny, but most Americans do not agree. This is why he's apt to lose this fall.

JP| 9.14.12 @ 2:09PM

You should give up while you can. That stupid film, which has only been seen by 10 people in a private viewing at the Vine Theatre last June could not have possibly been the cause of the assaults. Hillary, and the Prez are apologizing over a red herring. The assaults that occured on 9/11 were well trained, and coordinated operations, which had to have had the authorizations of both the regimes in Libya and Egypt. Only a small trailer of the film was posted on You-Tube, and Rev Jones never even heard of it until this week. The fact is, Obama was set-up by the very people he considers kindered spirits- the Muslim Brotherhood.

To make matters worse for the President, his press secretary just a few hours ago claims no linkage between these uprising and organized terror. He said with a straight face that the spreading protests have nothing to do with the US or his policies.

Obama's foreign policy now lays in tatters. North Africa and the Med just became an extension of the Muslim Brotherhood terror network and Obama enabled it.

Pablo| 9.14.12 @ 2:12PM

Let me give you an analogy that will explain a major difference between republicans and everyone else.

Say you go out with your friends to a crowded bar. And one of your buddies gets really belligerent, goes up to a gang of thugs, and starts calling them a bunch of names. What do you do?

1) Try and convince your buddy to simmer down, suggest to the thugs that you're friend is wasted, and try and defuse the whole thing?
2) Stand by your buddy's legal right to call these guys names and let the chips fall where they may.

You choose #2. Mature people choose #1. You consider #1 to be cowardly. That's because you have an adolescent mentality.

nathan| 9.14.12 @ 2:28PM

One of course. The end goal is to arrive home safely. The ONLY GOAL is to get home safely. This isn't about your manhood, your STINKING PRIDE, it's about you and your friend not ending up in the hospital or the morgue. You don't know if these guys are armed and what they're capable of doing. So you get him away from them and say sorry folks. Because you and he want to get home safely period.

And to all of you I recommend the NRA safety courses, especially Refuse to be a Victim. Best money time you'll spend.

And here's the thing, there's a difference between what you CAN do and what you SHOULD do. The Founders emphasized the responsible exercise of those rights they gave us. Regarding the video would Madison author of the First Amendment have defended the maker? Maybe. Would he have applauded him? NO.

Same thing with the minister who burned the korans in Florida. Can he? Yes. In terms of helping missionaries in muslim countries bring these people to Christ, which is THE most important thing, did it help? NO. Should he have? NO

Again the difference between what you CAN do and what you SHOULD do.

JP| 9.14.12 @ 2:58PM

What in the hell are you talking about? We're not talking about Republicans, but Obama's foreign policy. If you won't answer my points, fair and good. Just move on. But, don't change the subjects with strawmen.

They ALWAYS got their man to go to ground. Even 6 feet 240 pounds goes down to 8 people and 1400 pounds.

We just needed to tell the vermin that could have stopped these scum that if it continued, the Aswan Dam would be destroyed. Then WE SHOULD HAVE DONE IT! Much shutting up would have ensued.

Mr. Stein, There is an altruistic and common bit of advise that I believe you would be wise to consider. It is: "If you really wish to know a man, you must analyze his actions and ignore his words."

But then, when he is in a Muslim country, Obama claims to be a Muslim.

How do you explain this away?

SteveHC1| 9.14.12 @ 2:07PM

Obama thinks he can pacify war-mongering, barbarian Islamist terrorists and "convert" them to true democracy and respect for all religions (NOT going to happen). Romney thinks he can "scare" them into submission without any real plan for doing so (NOT going to happen).

We are doomed to having to choose a Presidential candidate who we hope will be the least incompetent of the two.

nathan| 9.14.12 @ 2:19PM

We REAAAALLLY need a moderator on this site.

In any case to address what Ben started out talking about, from the very moment Christ went home, Christians have been looking for His return and we are encouraged to live our lives as though He may return in the next breath we take. If we look at Revelation more of the things talked about in that book, specifically to Israel, appear to be in place than at any time in history.

But God acts when He alone acts. God's will, God's way, God's time. Christ can return before I finish this, He can hold off another thousand years.

There are clearly however evangelical what we would call "millenialists" who think that maybe they can influence the process. One way of doing this is promoting a war between Israel and Iran. Some of what Revelation describes looks a lot like nuclear exchanges to many people and a necessary condition for Christ's return. Provoke the war and VOILA! Christ descends through the clouds.

The idea that you can move God off HIS time table is ludricous of course but you wonder if such people are simply terrified of dying, not secure in their faith, and wonder if Christ returns while I'm alive, then I don't have to worry about dying and wonder where I'll end up. Interesting thought. Not to say all Beach Boy singers are thinking this way but the literature says these folks are out there.

Occam's Tool| 9.14.12 @ 3:46PM

SteveHC1| 9.14.12 @ 2:23PM

Folks, I agree that Ben's blog writings here, as of late, have often seemed to be tinged with a bit of depression if not desperation. But on the matter of Revelation or Armageddon he may not be too far off.

Militant Islamists across the globe have essentially declared war against all others who inhabit this planet, and may soon have nuclear bombs at their disposal via Iran. Israel, which in all likelihood already has nuclear weapon capability, is literally surrounded by Islamists with thousands upon thousands of "conventional" rocketed missiles aimed at it. And right-wing extremists on both "sides" are constantly pushing for and encouraging stubborn intransigence if not full-blown escalation. A third world war with multiple nuclear armaments included is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Pierre Montagne| 9.14.12 @ 4:54PM

Jim in Felton| 9.14.12 @ 2:26PM

I have heard it said that if you tell a lie often enough, it becomes as truth. It would seem that Ben has succumbed. The Democrat party continues to call us a democracy, we are a republic. Egypt and Libya are democracies, also known as mob rule. The people of this region lack the moral fiber for peaceful self rule and require a dictator. The people of Israel do have the moral fiber. That is not racial, there is only one human race, the difference is cultural. There are many cultures that should not be encouraged to govern themselves. The Muslim world has shown themselves inadequate.

DA| 9.14.12 @ 3:07PM

"I hope Mr. Romney will not let himself get pushed around by the Obama smear machine. I see that at a rally today in Virginia, his speech was derailed by a lone Obama heckler asking, "Why are you politicizing Libya?" That apparently rattled Gov. Romney badly."

Not quite. I was there and Gov. Romney was not at all "rattled." In fact, he was talking about the tragedy in Libya and as he said, he was going to suggest a "moment of silence" when the heckler interrupted him. Gov. Romney very smartly said that obviously one person (the heckler) was not interested in a moment of silence in honor of those who had died in Libya. When the heckler tried to drown out Gov. Romney the huge crowd began shouting him down with "USA,USA,USA, USA . . ." until the rude heckler was removed. Gov. Romney was in NO WAY "apparently rattled badly." In fact, the commotion that the heckler created ruined the moment of solemnity that Gov. Romney had tried to bring about. However, Gov. Romney is in no way so thin skinned to have been "rattled badly" by such an inconsiderate imbecile.

DA| 9.14.12 @ 3:21PM

And, one further comment . . . Gov. Romney's speech was NOT "derailed by a lone Obama heckler . . ." as once that heckler was gone, Gov. Romney stayed right on message about the terrible Obama economy. Prior to his taking the stage several women spoke on behalf of Gov. Romney and what he would do to turn our country around. One such woman spoke of how she had lost her job two years ago and under the failed Obama presidency she has been unable to find work. Furthermore, on the issue of the heckler who accused Gov. Romney of "politicizing Libya" the truth is the only ones politicizing Libya are Obama and his administration!

POTUS bowed symbolically to the King of Saudi Arabia; Bush (with UK's Blair) was hand-in-hand with him; the petro-dollar depended on Saudi Arabia; the 9/11 suicide-stooges came from Saudi Arabia; Salafism born in Egypt now at home in Saudi Arabia lives well with the extreme Saudi Wahhabis; Saudi Arabia has sent a lot of financial support to the mosque-building programme in the west also supported by our liberal modernist governments; the "terrorist" scapegoat Osama BL & his Al-Q. mission came from Saudi Arabia; USA and UK have sold plenty of the latest armaments technology to Saudi Arabia. What a lovely little mess this unnatural alliance USA, UK and the EU has had with Saudi Arabia.
And all of this for a drop of oil. The West has sold its soul for a mess of oilage and this will haunt it until its final demise.

Strange too how we have removed great dictators whom we built up to protect various Middle Eastern & Maghrebi territories from tribal revolt. Intelligently, we have removed the strong men capable of doing this to facilitate a radical movement our feeble-minded liberal rulers have never understood. And they still do not. Nor will they ever. They have rejected Almighty God in their liberal modernist "constitutions". We no longer trust in Almighty God. The liberal modernist gods of "democracy" (or selling political programmes to the highest bidder) and "freedom to do as you please" (including killing babies in the womb; allowing unnatural marital partnerships and permitting the elderly to euthanase) will not save us in our hour of greatest need. What a pathetic, fragmented and delusional society we have become.

There was widespread talk of a devastating financial collapse at the end of the 1970s - early 1980s. The apocalyptic talk is just talk.

On the other hand, I've also been thinking lately about Tolstoy's thesis in War and Peace, that history unfolds according to its own dictates, and people and societies follow.

If Tolstoy was right, it would explain those interesting moments in history when societies have made decisions and taken action when the decisions they made and the actions they took were clearly against their best interests and even against the common perceptions of the time. They should have known that they were choosing upheaval and disaster to their systems. We do indeed seem to be doing that in America (and in the West in general) currently.

I think that Tolstoyan analysis is the reason why Barack Obama continues to attract a more-or-less even amount of voters and is running close to 50-50 with Romney. I know Romney isn't all that charismatic, but OBAMA'S GOT TO GO! Surely everyone knows that, but they're not saying it.

Obama has voiced his displeasure with our form of government and said china being a dictatorship is easier to govern. He has voiced contempt at our poorly written and unusable constitution. He has stated that in a conflict he will stand with the Muslims and he did, three days ago. He recently said that Catholicism is not a legitimate religion. He was unhappy that we were paying less than two dollars a gallon for gas. He is feeling better now that he has pushed that past four dollars a gallon. He really... really... really hates that we, this nation, is so productive and as a result wealthy and is working his hardest to make us unproductive and as poor as any other third world country. He has taken up the mantle of dictator.

SeattleBill| 9.14.12 @ 4:10PM

Meanwhile, back in reality, President Obama said this::

"Since our founding, the United States has been a nation that respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others," he said. "But there is absolutely no justification for this type of senseless violence -- none."

(I found this buried, with diabolical cleverness, in an article on the CNN website.)

He also ordered the U.S.S. Laboon and U.S.S. McFaul, complete with Tomahawk missiles, to points off the Libyan coast.

Delusions can be comforting, of course, and you're entitled to them. But when you're indulging them, you should probably say so, as a courtesy to your readers.

Stkman| 9.14.12 @ 4:33PM

What Obama says and what he does are very different. Obama has shown disdain towards Jews by the way he treats their leaders. Back door exits or, just flat out refusing to meet with them.
He shows disdain for Christains when tries to force us to do things against our beleifs, like paying for birth control or abortions for others.
Oooohhhh, big deal, he sent to destroyers to the coast of Lybia. It would have been better for him to have protected the Ambassador and his staff. He had five hours to get help there. We have aircraft carriers in the Mediteranian, yet no help was sent.
Actions truly do speak louder than words.
Thats the reality Seattle Bill.

SeattleBill| 9.14.12 @ 4:37PM

I was responding to the article, not to your post, Surly.

But now that I look at your post, I see that it too has some delusions. Let's just pick one. Find me the quote where President Obama said that Catholicism is not a legitimate religion. I did a Google search but I'm still not sure what you're referring to. Would a professional politician really be so stupid as to say such a self-destructive thing? Or are you perhaps inferring that that's "what he meant", based on something he actually said ?

Actually, let's do a second one: you believe that President Obama " really... really... really hates that we, this nation, is so productive". Was it when he said that the free market is "the greatest engine of growth and prosperity the world has ever known" that you became convinced of this?

For some reason that I don't understand, some people are driven to delusional thinking regarding President Obama. There are real things about him that we could discuss. Why is it so often about imaginary things?

Richard S.| 9.14.12 @ 5:10PM

Seattle-

There is a lot of evidence concerning Obama's beliefs:

Direct evidence:

1) Obama's books.
2) Obama's speeches.
3)Obama's legislation
4) Obama's executive actions
5)Obama's actions as a private citizen, teaching, community organizing, some law practice.

Circumstantial evidence

1) What are the results of his words and actions?
2) What are his allies and underlings doing in his name?
3)Who were his friends and allies who sponsored his career?

So what do we know?

Obama grew up in a Marxist environment: his mother, grandfather, his father, his teachers in school, his political idols, his early supporters were all Marxists.

He admits this in his books.

So there is direct evidence for his hatred of capitalism in his early life.

Now, if we were to look at Obama's political career, it is evident that he despises capitalism by virtue of his policies.

Obamacare
Bailing out the big banks and Wall Street
Spending billions on failing Green companies that were owned by his political supporters.
Bailing out GM.
Taking over the student loan business.
Spending billions on failed jobs programs that didn't create any jobs.

As far as religion goes, Barack Obama grew up in an irreligious Marxist household, then went to Chicago and ended up in white-hating, America despising Black nationalist cult pretending to be a church.

Now, Obama also made a speech about how "angry, bitter people who held onto their religion and guns." He was referencing Christian conservatives.

Pierre Montagne| 9.14.12 @ 4:45PM

When Obama kills terrosists with drones he does so to help jihad and to keep them from being caught.
It is no accident that he is personally Killing them. Terrorists are killed with Drones and not captured alive...think about that....

Not capturing them alive...
Prevents questioning the terrorist
Prevents further information on their activities
Prevents Intelligence being gathered to stop future activites
Teaches other terrorists to be more careful.
Killing them with drones - ensures the concealment of their activities and only helps Jihad.

Only with this President - he personaly controls this kind of stuff.

Rubbish. Qaddafi was intimidated into limiting his overt anti-American acts, but he was never anything but our determined enemy.

Ben writes, "God help us when Judgment Day comes."

Ben, He has already given you all the help you need, and infinitely more. All you need to do is accept it.

Jesus told Nicodemus, a Jewish leader, in John 3:14-18—

“…And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness [Numbers 21:4-9], even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

“He who believes in Him [Jesus] is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God….”

God loved His Hebrew people so much that He rescued them from slavery in Egypt; but when they sinned against Him, He required them to look toward the bronze serpent on the pole if they wanted to be saved from the poison of the fiery serpents He sent to punish them.

Jesus explained that the bronze serpent was a symbol of the death He was about to suffer on the cross in order to save from the fatal poison of sin everyone who looks to Him in faith.

No one need sweat out the End Times or Judgment Day if they gratefully accept the sacrifice Jesus made on their behalf. I pray that you will.

So, you are up on Vickie Weaver because you read one book by one writer about the Weaver lawlessness?

I am up on Vickie Weaver because I read Randy Weaver's lawyer's book, "Every Knee Shall Bend". I also read pretty much everything I could find. Most of all, I watched Randy Weaver testifying before congress. That alone outpoints your writer no matter how good you think he is.

Vickie Weaver was killed because the murderer of a federal agent, Kevin Harris, ran behind her just as the bullet from a federal agent, aimed at Harris, passed though the drape covered window in the door Vickie Weaver was holding open to assist the murderer's escape.

Weaver testified that Harris knew the man he killed was a federal agent.

Vickie Weaver was not visible because the curtains were closed over the window, as Randy Weaver testified before congress.

Get over your love of people who would have hated you if they knew you.

MarkS| 9.15.12 @ 10:54AM

I guess because you are better informed about Ruby Ridge that you've deftly left out some salient details regarding the crucial aspects you chose to cite. Next question is was it deliberate?

I too read Spence's book and watched every electrifying moment of the Senate hearings. And what you've left out is Harris testified he knew he killed a Federal Agent after the fact but at the moment of engagement he and Weaver's 14 year old son, Sammy, were headed downhill to investigate a suspected intrusion when the Marshals shot their dog from cover. What happened next is in dispute. The marshals say they rose and identified themselves when Harris and young Weaver opened fire who in turn claimed the marshals opened fire on them without warning. I'm inclined to believe Harris because of the whole over-the-top militarized overkill of the pursuit of Weaver over a questionable, piddling firearm violation of shortening a shotgun barrel an inch or so too much that had all the earmarks of an entrapment case. But there is no question the marshals pulled the trigger first by killing the dog and who can wonder that in the next few seconds a person would think they were under attack. Harris and young Weaver did and fired back. Agent Degan died from a wound to the chest but young Sammy was shot in the back, running away, and later died. Not exactly a gung-ho warrior holding the line against the marshalls, eh?

MarkS| 9.15.12 @ 10:54AM

Your next is even more egregious in that the only reason FBI HRT sniper Horiuchi took the shot was because Cdr. Richard Rogers unilaterally loosened the rules of engagement, flying out in the helicopter if memory serves, to permit firing on any person holding a weapon even though the team was well back on a perimeter and not being fired on by said person nor were any innocent civilians at risk. From 200 yards he first wounded Randy Weaver and then turned to the running Harris by timing his shot to hit him through the door window as he passed into the house thus violating another former ROE in not knowing with certainty, because of the curtain, if any other person was behind that door. An obvious question is how was it the door was opened from the inside and thus a distinct possibility someone was standing there? So there was- Vicki Weaver holding her infant child who had shot at no one and was not armed.

The final outcome? $3 million awarded to the Weavers. Charges against Harris eventually dismissed, 12 FBI employees disciplined, Rogers career disappeared and Horiuchi prosecuted which was later dropped. Ruby Ridge and Waco were terrifying examples of the militarization of policing in the US and harbinger of things to come well before 9/11, Homeland Security and the coming meltdown. It’s easy to say, “Get over your love of people who would have hated you if they knew you.” but will you be able to get over your love of people who loved you when we’re all at risk?

Albert Constantine Jr.| 9.16.12 @ 11:42AM

As I read the response of the troll from District 9, much of what I was formulating as a response was summarized well by you. At the time of the Weaver hearings in the mid to late 90s, I was assigned to the local FBI Resident Agency in a violent crime fugitive task force. I watched the hearings with great interest, given my daily involvement in interacting with individuals like those who were being questioned (the only one I actually met involved was Larry Potts).

Among the important lessons I learned was that out of everyone I saw testify, the only one I saw actually take responsibility for his actions was Randy Weaver. He had already received his settlement from the federal government, but he acknowledged his role in events, and agreed that nothing would have happened had it not been for a series of bad judgments he made.

From my fellow government agents, however, I did not detect any such concessions. While I understand (and myself often possess) the mentality that to apologize is to show weakness, I feel it is better to act right the first time, and have little to apologize for when things are done. Watching them, I always tried to ensure that my enthusiasm for catching the bad guy was not at the expense of my fidelity to the Constitution, or I risked becoming a bad guy too. In the years since, in my subsequent assignments, I tried to impart the same lesson on those who worked for me.

Judge Moore, sued by ACLU for displaying the Ten Commandments in his courtroom was stripped of his judgeship.

America the beautiful,
or so you used to be.
Land of the Pilgrims' pride;
I'm glad they'll never see.
Babies piled in dumpsters,
Abortion on demand,
Oh, sweet land of liberty;
your house is on the sand.
Our children wander aimlessly
poisoned by cocaine
choosing to indulge their lusts,
when God has said abstain
From sea to shining sea,
our Nation turns away
From the teaching of God's love
and a need to always pray.
We've kept God in our
temples,how callous we have grown.
When earth is but His footstool,
and Heaven is His throne.
We've voted in a government
that's rotting at the core,
Appointing Godless Judges;
who throw reason out the door
Too soft to place a killer
in a well deserved tomb,
But brave enough to kill a baby
before he leaves the womb.
You think that God's not
angry,that our land's a moral slum?
How much longer will He wait
before His judgment comes?
How are we to face our God,
from Whom we cannot hide?
What then is left for us to do,
but stem this evil tide?
If we who are His children,
will humbly turn and pray;
Seek His holy face
and mend our evil way:
Then God will hear from Heaven;
and forgive us of our sins,
He'll heal our sickly land
and those who live within.
But, America the Beautiful,
If you don't - then you will see,
A sad but Holy God
withdraw His hand from Thee.

And though I despise their cowardice in the face of Muslim demands we ignore the First Amendment whenever they bare their teeth and demand it.

Last night I happened to read the book of Habbakuk. The prophet’s feelings and concerns about the corruption and growing tyranny he saw were eerily similar to what is going on today. I would encourage your wife and everyone to read Habbakuk’s 3 short chapters. Not only is it a book of stern warning about evil and difficult times ahead for all, but more importantly, Habbakuk’s words remind believers to hold fast to their trust in a faithful God. “For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.” ~Habbakuk 2:3 http://bible.org/seriespage/habakkuk

Better to read Prophet Daniel - we live in times when there is abomination of desolation in the holy places. Chrisitian leaders have sold out to false religions claiming any belief will get you to Heaven; they allow any politically correct programme to dictate to how they speak and the interpretations they make about Holy Scripture. Self-aggrandisement, avarice and gluttony are fine as they are part of The American Dream; USA permits policies that are blatantly immoral and so on to the effect that good has become evil and evil is counted as good. No wonder you feel it is the end times. One thing is for sure - the west is no longer Christian. As a consequence it is at its most vulnerable since the fall of The Roman Empire.

I have, for many years, enjoyed your clever commentary and appreciated your even-handed treatment of the views of others who don't always perceieve the world in the same manner as you, Mr. Stein. This article is certainly no exception.
I would repectfully suggest, however, that your suggestion that "If Obama says he's a Christian, he's a Christian" may not bear up under careful scrutiny. Does a person saying something is so necessarily make it so? Does the term "Christian" imply a specific, definable world view, or is it open to the interpretation of whomever may desire to co-opt it? Is it possible that Obama really believes he's a Christian and may be deluded? Might he simply be misrepresenting the facts about himself as he knows them? I would respectfully submit that your friend may not be so off the mark as you have suggested.

The inability to become enraged over Jesus jokes when ever "Christians" see said jokes is a weakness. More power to people who have the balls to demand their religion be respected.
One last point, we are forced to swallow a "religion" called Judeo-Christian. What the heck is that? One is either a Jew or a Christian, can`t be both. Jews follow the Old Testament and Christians believe and accept Jesus as our savior. All this has led to a misguided pro-Israel "patriotism" which has essentially made the US a target of every majority Muslim country and left the country with few allies in even non Muslim ones.
So be an American and look out for its interest at all times not when it only takes your fancy. And spare us this crap about your Christian friend. I know the type, they go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem thinking they can get closer to God. Read the Bible that will get you closer much faster.

Indeed, Joe, the US govt you voted for along the years as jus another anaymous type of citizen has certainly caused an immense amount of needless death and suffering.
How do you manage to be so righteous Joe?

Frankly it's just sad to see someone like yourself descend into mean-spirited, selfish senility.

Did you NEVER admire what Chomsky represents?

How could you have allowed yourself to be put in the company of such ignoramuses?

I feel sorry for you. I hope the condition might be helped by "education therapy."

"Why did the State Department not protect our Ambassador in Benghazi? Why isn't Mrs. Clinton resigning over this? Why isn't Secretary of Defense Panetta apologizing and resigning?" ...that's because a well designed plan came together so well! In the face of such success, celebrate...even if you must do so privately for a few years.
Mr. Steien, you do a good job of pointing to the set-ups in Libya and Egypt. Now, just continue connecting the dots all the way to identifying the origins of Al Queda and who they work for. ...almost there, just a few easy strokes to arrive at the whole truth: Al Queda is an instrument of the CIA. Handy when you need to overthrow a few dictators and move global assets under tighter central bankster control. When you have an international band of thugs you can always stage a convincing false flag event to kill innocent people and rally the ignorant masses behind some notion you want to sell as a 'greater good'...or whatever.

I guess Romney won't be bringing this up, though, because he may need the same band of thugs if he gets elected. As I said, handy.

OMG EVERYONE IN THE MIDDLE EAST IS AL QAEDA!!!!!!!!

RUN FOR YOUR LIVES.

No, get a hold of yourself... if it is the end times, then the rapture is near.... I heard election day, but if you were in a voting booth, you will be overlooked.

Oh, and of course Ben, you'll be stuck here with all of us jesusless liberals.

But if you really believe the crap you right, you might want to go find a nice church and introduce yourself to "the lord"

Oh, and if any conservative wants to live the life of security, that they expect from their incompetent government to protect them from Terrorists, Criminals and non-believers, I suggest hiring a big contractor to build you a prison, and move into it.

You can't have it both ways, all the time....

Cognitive Dissonance - The GOP and their cultish followers.

By the way, I thought Ben was crazy and now that I've read the comments, I see that he's not.

Question, if all ya' all want to be saved in the end times so you can sit at the right hand of god, and Obama is the anti christ that will bring that day sooner, then why are all ya' all so up in arms.

Sit back, enjoy the rapture. Eternal peace is yours.

Vote for Obama, just to make sure.

"Because this is a democracy."

This country has not been a democracy for at least 225 years, Mr. Stein, and you do us a grave disservice by referring to us as such. Until Barry completes his coup, we are still a constitutional republic.
