Who Is ‘Racist’?

There is rampant hypocrisy and irrationality in public discussions of race.

Whatever the ultimate outcome of the case against George Zimmerman for his shooting of Trayvon Martin, what has happened already is enough to turn the stomach of anyone who believes in either truth or justice.

An amazing proportion of the media has given us a painful demonstration of the thinking — and lack of thinking — that prevailed back in the days of the old Jim Crow South, where complexion counted more than facts in determining how people were treated.

One of the first things presented in the media was a transcript of a conversation between George Zimmerman and a police dispatcher. The last line in most of the transcripts shown on TV was that of the police dispatcher telling Zimmerman not to continue following Trayvon Martin.

That became the basis of many media criticisms of Zimmerman for continuing to follow him. Only later did I see a transcript of that conversation on the Sean Hannity program that included Zimmerman’s reply to the police dispatcher: “O.K.”

That reply removed the only basis for assuming that Zimmerman did in fact continue to follow Trayvon Martin. At this point, neither I nor the people who assumed that he continued to follow the teenager have any basis in fact for believing that he did or didn’t.

Why was that reply edited out by so many in the media? Because too many people in the media see their role as filtering and slanting the news to fit their own vision of the world. The issue is not one of being “fair” to “both sides” but, more fundamentally, of being honest with their audience.

NBC News carried the editing even further, removing one of the police dispatcher’s questions, to which Zimmerman was responding, in order to feed the vision of Zimmerman as a racist.

In the same vein were the repeated references to Zimmerman as a “white Hispanic.” Zimmerman is half-white. So is Barack Obama. But does anyone refer to Obama as a “white African”?

All these verbal games grow out of the notion that complexion tells you who is to be blamed and who is not. It is a dangerous game because race is no game. If the tragic history of the old Jim Crow South in this country is not enough to show that, the history of racial and ethnic tragedies is written in blood in countries around the world. Millions have lost their lives because they looked different, talked differently, or belonged to a different religion.

In the midst of the Florida tragedy, there was a book published with the unwieldy title, No Matter What … They’ll Call This Book Racist. Obviously it was written well before the shooting in Florida, but its message — that there is rampant hypocrisy and irrationality in public discussions of race — could not have been better timed.

Author Harry Stein, a self-described “reformed white liberal,” raised by parents who were even further left, exposes the illogic and outright fraudulence that lies behind so much of what is said about race in the media, in politics, and in our educational institutions.

He asks a very fundamental question: “Why, even after the Duke University rape fiasco, does the media continue to give credence to every charge of racism?”

Harry Stein credits Shelby Steele’s book White Guilt with opening his eyes to one of the sources of many counterproductive things said and done about race today — namely, guilt about what was done to blacks and other minorities in the past.

Let us talk sense, like adults. Nothing that is done to George Zimmerman — justly or unjustly — will unlynch a single black man who was tortured and killed in the Jim Crow South for a crime he didn’t commit.

Letting hoodlums get away with hoodlumism today does not undo a single injustice of the past. It is not even a favor to the hoodlums, for many of whom hoodlumism is just the first step on a path that leads to the penitentiary, and maybe to the execution chamber.

Winston Churchill said, “If the past sits in judgment on the present, the future will be lost.” He wasn’t talking about racial issues, but what he said applies especially where race is involved.

Good article. Here's the problem with the mainstream media today: they form a narrative, based on little (if any) information, and run with a story. If facts are later revealed that don't conform to their narrative, they manipulate the information to keep the mob whipped up.

Mainstream journalism is nothing of the sort. Journalism used to be about reporting facts -- now it's more about creating news for ratings. If pieces of information are missing, they'll simply insert opinions as facts, and walk them back a bit if they're wrong.

Case in point: In the eyes of the media, Zimmerman first started out as a white Jewish guy, based solely on his surname. When it turned out he was neither Jewish nor completely white, a new term was invented -- white Hispanic. The point was simple; white on black racism was initially implied by the media, and they were willing to stick to that narrative no matter what.

Zimmerman's ethnicity makes no difference to Trayvon's parents, nor did it make a difference to Trayvon the moment his body so rudely interrupted the trajectory of Zimmerman's innocent little bullet. If you think Trayvon was culpable, then charge his corpse or ashes with first degree assault.

If one of Mr. Sowell's unarmed teenage kinfolk were to be followed at night by a stranger more than a decade older than the victim, then shot to death, Mr. Sowell would be naturally more sympathetic to the victim. And remember, 17 is a year under the age of majority; so unless you follow the maxim "old enough to bleed, old enough to butcher", the offense, though not premeditated murder, may be 2nd degree murder or 1st degree manslaughter-- and first degree manslaughter is a considered a far more serious offense than jaywalking and removing the 'Do Not Remove Under penalty Of Law' tag from mattresses.

But what are you worried about?: Zimmerman will be acquitted because not enough evidence exists for an airtight conviction. The same proof that let's so many of the guilty off the hook, something you have always detested, will let Zimmerman off so he can write a book that will make him quite wealthy. Everyone lives happily ever after save for Trayvon's parents.

One point Sowell is making is that NOBODY knows what really happened that day; all any of us have to go on is what the media has determined that we - in THEIR OPINION - should be told. And the media is not interested in informing the public; they are interested in promoting their own worldview as to what THEY BELIEVE happened.
I certainly do not know, and neither do you what really happened. Maybe Zimmerman was out to kill this guy from the get-go. Maybe Trayvon wanted to kill Zimmerman.
The point is deciding A PRIORI what really happened is no different that what white "crackers" in the deep south did years ago when they would lynch a black guy because he supposedly stared at a white woman.

The jury may be goaded into convicting him on something just so they won't be afraid for themselves. The judge may be too afraid to overturn it. Perhaps Trayvon Martin's mother should take responsibility for raising a thug. Where is Trayvon Martin's father? Why is he not married to his mother? (Trayvon's mother's last name is "Fulton," not "Martin." This tells a lot.) Where was he during Trayvon's childhood? Why did Trayvon's mother choose to raise a son by herself? No one taught Trayvon responsibility or honesty and he was known to associate with thugs and brag about assaults. He assaulted George Zimmerman. This is evident from the facts. (If you don't think having your head bashed in to the pavement is life threatening, you are quite stupid.) Why would Trayvon Martin do this? Was crime a lifestyle for him? Would he have turned out different had his father been a responsible adult and helped raise him?

These are questions you will never ask, Brooks, because you do not care about actual facts. You see race, race, and race. Nothing more. You don't see behavior, you don't see assault, you don't see a dysfunctional teenager brought up by a dysfunctional, irresponsible, mother. There is a shooting and all you WANT to see is EEE-VILLE whitey shooting innocent black kids. It's absurd. Ludicrous. And completely unsupported by the facts. His grandfather introduces him to Marshall Davis, a self-avowed communist, to be his mentor. He goes on to college where, again, by his own words, he surrounded himself with marxist friends and professors so that he wouldn't appear to be a "sellout."

After college (Occidental), he became a community organizer. In the context of "social justice" this meant a campaign of "Give us Whitey's sh*t."

Later, he was introduced Bill Ayres, a self-avowed communist, author of Rules for Radicals (a book dedicated to Satan, incidentally), and unrepentant bomber of federal buildings and police stations. Later, the Aires family (apparently -- link below) put Obama through Harvard Law School. Obama would later launch his political career from this man's (Bill Ayres) living room.

He spent 20 years in Reverend Wright's church, which teacher Black Liberation Theology, a theology that preaches marxism, hatred of the United States, and hatred against Jews and whites.

Now, finally, to the point:

Here we have a man, surrounded his whole life by marxists and the occasional criminal, that has severe abandonment issues, grew up hating this country vis-a vis his family, friends, and church. He's got a racist chip on his shoulder the size of Texas (his wife, too). Remember the "typical white person" remark about his grandmother? Read either of his books (one of which was ghost-written by Ayres)?

And now he's the leader of the free world, president of a country he hates. What do you think he's been trying to do with that power? Destroy the country he hates!!! How? By running deficits the likes of which were unimaginable a few years ago (bankrupt the country). By pitting Americans against each other on the basis of class (OWS), race (his "Just-US" DoJ), ethnicity (licking our enemies boots, while shunning our friends), and gender (the contrived "war on women").

You see, he is a thug -- albeit a well dressed, educated one. He's been groomed from young adulthood into the job he currently occupies, like a sleep-cell awaiting activation. He's not merely content to stroll down the street and "Kill whitey, for Trayvon." He's much smarter than that. He wants the country to rip itself apart FOR him. "I don't feel like talking", he said.

An armed older person cannot follow (I would write 'stalk' but you wont tolerate that) an unarmed minor and not expect to be charged with Murder 2 (Book 'em Dan-o, Murder Two).
But you are worried about nothing: George will be much better off than he ever dreamed possible, he will either be acquitted and write a book; or be convicted of a minor offense (say, 3rd degree manslaughter), receives a slap on the wrist, and writes a book.

The point was that what we "think" about the case does not matter. We hire prosecuters and judges to make these determinations based on law and the facts as they know them.

And of course they have been doing this for years. Back in '03 or '04,, it was announced that a man in Louisiana was nabbed for the rape and murder of several women. Having heard nothing about said crimes until it was news that a suspect was caught, and wanting to know more, I read several articles on the web. There I saw the victims names and photographs, and, those of the suspect in custody as well.

I could not help but notice all the victims were white, the suspect, black.

Yet, there was not a single mention of anyone's race.

Leaving race out of it is fine by me, but why must the media only mention race when it's white-on-black crime? (Or white hispanic, white asian, etc.)How about not mentioning it at all? By bringing race to the forefront, the media is as guilty of race-baiting hackery as the press of the Jim Crow south when blacks were denounced and assumed guilty before their trial even began. (Zimmerman can certainly understand that part)

One might shrug and say the reversed race-baiting press of today is simply balancing things out and making amends. But two wrongs have never made a right, and to believe otherwise is to be a simpleton.

The Atlanta newspaper has a strict policy of never revealing the race of a criminal -- and then they add, "Arrested at the scene were Condoleeza Thigpen and Napoleon Bonaparte Jones."

I have also been wondering why nobody who mentions Obama feels it necessary to add, "whose mother was White and whose father was a Black African national," since they cannot mention George Zimmerman without this parenthetical. If people felt it necessary to say of me, "whose father was the son of Germans and Swedes, some of whom were Jews, and whose mother was the Southern daughter of Methodist missionaries from Alsace-Lorraine" I would find that amusing and also rather tedious. Or they could say "who is eligible for membership both in the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution" which in our case probably means they were selling merchandise to both sides in every war in Western European and North American history.

What happened to the whole idea of America being a place where people came to leave the Old Country behind and become Americans? Who cares what your ancestors were? Isn't America about what YOU are?

On the other hand, when O.J. was "acquitted" by a jury of his Peeps as a stick in the eye of Whitey, the most trenchant comment I heard on the verdict was spoken by a member of my family, who commented, "Oh, he's got his punishment. Now he can't be White anymore."

The unsubstantiated "facts" in the indictment are enough to show the Special Prosecutor "has got nothin'". Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz called the indictment "irresponsible" and "unethical" and in fact showed that Zimmerman acted in self defense. It's likely that the only evidence the "prosecution" has is exculpatory for the defense.

It's a clear case of media malpractice. The original moron media narrative was that some white Republican conservative law-and-order guy sneaked up on a little black kid who was just visiting his mother, and shot him in cold blood.

As the facts came out, it was clear that the media had played fast and loose with the truth. As it became clear that the shooter was partly Hispanic, the moron media began to fear a backlash from Hispanic groups. So they changed their narrative to "white-Hispanic" so as to keep the whiteness in there and downplay the Hispanicness. Their white-Republican-kills-black-kid narrative began to break down.

Finally, it came out that the media had doctored tapes, left out crucial information, and came across looking like an extended arm of far left organizations like Media Matters.

In the meantime, the moron media's false reporting inflamed the situation in the black community. Is there any way Zimmerman and others like him can file a lawsuit against the media for slander? I hope so. This is Richard Jewell all over again.

This story is primarily one of behaviors that has been re-cast as one of race. If what has been reported is accurate (and so much has not been, or at least has been woefully incomplete), the demography of the gated community was less than 50% white. Seeing a person of color would therefore be at least as likely as seeing someone whose heritage was primarily European via the Caucasus. Seeing an unfamiliar teenager in a hoody at night in the rain moving in a manner not resembling standard purposeful pedestrian transit likely drew much more attention from Zimmerman than the indeterminate nature of that teenager’s race (I think he’s black).

If the account that that Martin’s girlfriend was told by him during the cell phone call that someone was following him, how that would be perceived and responded to needs to be examined. Someone who was in the demographic of the 13 year old photo may have run straight home to his sanctuary from the dangerous outside world. A more mature person might have hung up and called 911, to report a strange character acting suspiciously, and had the matter resolved by the dispatcher (he’s reporting you as suspicious, both of you can go home).

On the other hand, someone who is immersed in a youthful culture of violence and criminal activity might size up his potential adversary, determine that he is taller and more fit, and double back to confront and challenge this person. That he turned out to be a “white Hispanic” may or may not have fit into his calculus, and how if so it might have affected his decision-making loop is unknown. He is unable to tell us, because he did not calculate that this other man on the block watch waiting for the police to arrive while he was performing whatever surveillance he was engaged in was also lawfully armed, and his reported failure to disengage upon learning that fact turned fatal.

It would seem at this point that most or all of the racial aspects of this case have been injected after the fact by those who weren’t there.

You ask a huge question. After all, heavily biased and shoddy/lazy reporting are now with us for the last quarter century that I have been paying attention. That's a long time with no real fix.

So -- How do we improve media and chastise it properly so that media "professionals" get it right the FIRST time AND are not encouraged to play fast and loose (for ratings, sensation, "splash") by news and editorial management?

Well, just to ask, how is Newsweek doing? Even Time? Probably most would immediately say that their dropped circulation is due to web news presence and those under age 40 shunning print media in all forms.

Maybe we need a series of scoring matrices that compare the National Enquirer with the NYT, Washington Post, L.A. Times, and CNN (web new included). Yes, that would be a lot of work.

Or maybe many people are just (consciously and unconsciously) tuning the NBC, ABC, CBS, and CNN news world out? For many people, "old style" news is so cumbersome as one must wait through endless opinion bloviating, nauseating (loud!) commercials, and nonsense until one gets to the story one is curious about in the 25th minute of the broadcast.

How much easier to go to a news only website on one's hand-held device and just get the who, what, when, where facts from a more INDEPENDENT source.

Maybe, just maybe the market can decide.

Also we can do this: If we're upset at NBC for how they handled Martin-Zimmerman, write to Proctor & Gamble, Pepsicola, Kraft Foods, Fidelity Investments, Goodyear, and Ford who advertise there.

In well-worded letters to the CEOs of these business titans who splash out million$ on TV adverts, explain that the crux of the matter is fact-based, truthful journalism.

Hit them where it hurts. Then there may not be any quarterly bonuses.

The market has failed to chastise the media with unfavorable financial results or those media corporations experiencing disappointing revenue streams fail to heed the market signals – possibly both. Whisper a threat to a corporation’s bottom line and that whisper becomes a deafening shout in boardrooms around the nation. But to increase the tempo, you’re very correct that corporate sponsors must instruct their ad agencies to avoid certain media outlets. And the way to bring that off is with a Tea Party type campaign to boycott products and services of firms keeping our mainstream media on life support – and, ironically enough, that form of protest is also protected under the 1st Amendment.

As long as the media is leftist, nothing will change. Yes, yes, we have alternative media like Fox and conservative internet sites and publications. But you don't realize how small a number of people get their news from alternative sources.

To cite one example, the nightly mainstream media, ABC, NBC, CBS, and PBS, have an evening news viewership of 22+ million people. The highest rated cable news show is O'Reilly (which is not even conservative) and his viewers total only 3 million.

I'm also a Texan and one thing I've noticed, at least in the Houston area, is that blacks seem to be treated better here than they are in northern cities. It's nothing to see the N word used on some northern city streets, but I never hear it said in Houston or Dallas or San Antonio. It may be used is some of the rural areas of deep east Texas.
So what bugs the heck out fo me is how southern states are still required to abide by the voting rights act and most other states are not? An illegal law being rammed down our throats. As the writer so wisely said, "democratic Jim Crowe laws". The democrats don't control the south any longer. It's time the southern states stood up and told the feds to take ahike, that unless the law is applied equally to all states then we'll have nothing to do with it. It isn't 1964 anymore.
Why do I bring up the voting rights act? Because right now Eric Holder is holding Texas elections hostage claiming that a new law in Texas requiring voters to have state issued ID is discriminatory. Under the voting rights act, Holder does not have to prove that it is discriminating, the state has to prove that it is not. What???? Yep. So how do you prove something isn't? I guess it all depends on(all of you know whats coming) what the meaning of is is?
Racism only exist as it does because our very own government is always asking on every form or application of anykind from the government what our race or ethniticity is. I was really proud of Houston back many years ago when there were blackouts happening all over the country. I recall when New York City, Detroit, Chicago, L.A., and maybe Pittsburgh and/or Philly had blackouts there was widespread rioting, looting, and other lawlessness by you know who....................blacks.

As the Obama Era (hopefully) fades into history, I have observed two postive side-effects of his regime :
1) The cry of "racism" is becoming more and more marginalized and is rapidly morphing into a "McCarthyism of the Left."
2) The incidence of "Liberal White Guilt" is becoming less detectable in the general population.

Trayvon had a cell phone. Why didn't he call 911 or why didn't his girlfriend call 911 if he felt threatened?

After Trayvon ran, why didn't he run home? Why did he circle back and punch Zimmerman?

The media has blamed "Whitey" for Trayvon's shooting. No matter what the facts are. So where is the media now? Where is Jackson, Sharpton, Congressman "Hoodie" Rush, the Black Caucus and the others now that there have been "Trayvon" hate crimes against White folks?
