Laughing at the Left

How can they really believe this stuff?

If the consequences for this great nation of ours weren’t so serious and the policies preferred by the left weren’t so dangerous, one would really laugh, almost uncontrollably, at the beliefs and (il)logic of American liberals. Based on things they have actually said or done, here are some of the things they really, truly seem to believe.

They believe we can spend our way out of debt. They believe taking money from one part of the economy to give to another part somehow makes the economy bigger. They believe people who have never run a business can run a business better than people who have spent their whole lives running businesses. They believe that what appears to be a 20-year spike in global temperatures (a spike itself that hundreds of scientists dispute) can mean doom for a planet whose temperatures have swung much more widely for 6 billion years — but that an eight- or ten-year flattening or even drop in temperatures can be ignored because it doesn’t comport with the “models” based largely on the previous 20 years. They believe that punishing “developed” nations for carbon consumption is a good idea even if it means that developing countries without the same environmental controls will take over the production/manufacturing forced away from the developed countries. So, somehow, in the name of saving the environment from carbon emissions, they would create even more carbon emissions (and other, real pollution) elsewhere — and call it progress.

They believe that teenage girls who aren’t allowed to get even minor cosmetic surgery without a parent’s permission should nevertheless be able to procure an abortion without a parent’s permission. They believe that would-be parents should have the “choice” to kill their babies, but not the choice of where to send their children to school. They believe that when it comes to advising about abortions, nobody should interfere with the doctor (abortionist)-patient relationship — but when it comes to caring for the elderly, anonymous bureaucrats should dictate to doctors what sorts of treatment are cost-effective enough to be “approved.”

They believe it is unconstitutional for a legislature to mention Jesus but perfectly okay to mention Allah. They think it is offensive for mass-market movies to exhibit Christian sensibilities, but that it is perfectly okay for primetime TV shows on the public airwaves to have eighth graders decide which is the sexiest from among of contestants on MILF (Mothers I’d Like to ****) Island. They believe it disqualifies an appellate judicial nominee to joke one time about praying “please God, no more Souters” on the Supreme Court, but that it doesn’t disqualify a Supreme Court nominee to repeat in multiple prepared speeches that “inherent physiological or cultural differences… may and will make a difference in our judging.” They believe it is disqualifying for a judicial nominee to have quoted Thomas Aquinas about a Catholic duty to be good and active citizens while speaking to a Catholic high school. They believe explicit words in the Constitution protecting contracts, and gun ownership rights, and property rights against government seizure, are to be ignored; but that wholly invented “rights” that cannot be found in any words of the Constitution, but that merely “extend” from “emanations” from “penumbras” of other judicially created “rights,” are somehow sacrosanct and essential parts of the Constitution.

They believe that when a white skinhead threatens a black man, it is a sign of a vast racist conspiracy; but that when paramilitary-garbed New Black Panthers with a weapon, spouting racial epithets, stand right in front of a polling place, it is no violation of civil rights at all — even after a judge has already moved to issue a default judgment against the Panthers. They believe that blacks are suffering racial discrimination when black voters themselves choose to hold non-partisan elections. They believe white firefighters can be denied promotions specifically because they are white, and that Asian students can be denied admission to college because they aren’t black, but that black students who want to attend racially integrated private schools should be sent back to de facto segregated public schools in the name of “fairness.”

The Left thinks it is good diplomacy to insult our allies while kowtowing to our enemies and bowing to problematic rivals. They tried everything in their power to stop Ronald Reagan’s Cold War policies and yet now claim to have been part of a decades-long, bipartisan consensus on Cold War efforts. They think Afghanistan is a “war of necessity” until they are in charge of it, after which it becomes a war that must be stopped, one that was inherited from bad Republicans. They oppose missile defense because they say it will never work, and then when it works they oppose it anyway. They think that American imperialists are worse than foreign Communists. They think American servicemen should be prosecuted for (allegedly) punching a jihadist-terrorist in the stomach while capturing him — and in a military court, without civilian due process rights — but that foreign terrorist suspects are too good for military justice and instead deserve Miranda rights and other domestic American civil rights.

They support jail sentences for mere paperwork violations of environmental laws, even of foreign environmental laws or regulations, but they think even violent criminals should be let free if police make unintentional mistakes in paperwork or procedure.

They also think it is dangerous to the point of being an existential threat for ordinary citizens to challenge office-holders at town hall meetings, but perfectly okay for those same powerful office-holders to call their critics “un-American.” They believe in the secret ballot for Mexicans, but not for American workers who are considering unionization. They say, against all evidence, that far more ballots are kept from being cast due to utterly unspecified “intimidation” than are cast fraudulently in the names of people who actually go nowhere near the polls, of dead people, and even of pet dogs …and of dead pet fish!!!

And, finally for now (this could go on for page after page), get this: They actually think most Americans agree with them. Now that isn’t just laugh-inducing; it’s worthy of a roll-on-the-floor, guffaw-til-you’re-blue-in-the-face, uncontrollable laughing fit.

Liberalism is nothing more than attack against the middle class. The whole purpose of health care "reform", the stimulus that didnt create any jobs and the so-called "war on poverty" was and is to STEAL TRILLIONS OF TAX DOLLARS FROM THE MIDDLE CLASS. This money is then held, traded, swapped, used, abused and swindled around by a gigantic government that no longer represents "we the people" but works only for its own selfish ends. "anti-poverty" money hardly reaches the poor: they give 'em just enough to not riot. Most of the money is spent on faceless bureaucrats and thieving politicians, and their cronies, and their relations. And healthc care "reform"? Such a f**ing joke: how the hell are we supposed to believe that we can "save" money by first of all spending 2 trillion dollars?

Sharpen your pitchforks. 2010 is almost here.

They are STATISTS who believe with all sincerity that the state - as represented by their own superiority - is the only entity capable of providing what is best for all of us. I'd give my right testicle to be able to do my PHD thesis on STUPID LYING STATIST PAMPERED ELITIST ACADEMICS. I returned to school at age 46. The above spot on piece is the syllabus I endured for 6 years getting my degree in GEO/GIS/URB PLANNING. Lectures often included eyeball from the podium accusatory statements directed at me from PUKES whom never held a job but earned a PHD by kissing arses and spewing how they taste on paper.

It was even told to my face it would better serve the world if people, Like myself, who by nature supposedly grow more conservative with age would just go ahead and die so theses overall tomes of asininity could be applied more freely.

I became conservative well before JIMMAH CARTER serving in the US NAVY. PRAISE GOD for Ronald Reagan.

Seems to me Reagan and Palin have EXACTLY the same experience - they were both Governors of large states. Palin's executive experience is actually greater than Reagan's was - having also been a city Mayor.

Mrs. Palin was a less than half term governor of a much smaller state and she was mayor of a very small (pop. 7,000) city. No way can she be favorably compared to Reagan

So you're saying that Kalifornia is a larger state than Alaska? Did you take geography in school by any chance? The number of terms is insignificant - the executive experience is all that matters. The same applies to the mayors office. Further - Sarah was nbot a "half term" governor - she had only a year remaining on her term - which again means exactly nothing when discussing executive experience.

Of course I know that land-wise Alaska is larger than California. But landmass is of little importance in politics. Witness the political clout of Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, etc. compared to that of New York, Ohio, Florida, etc.

Eight years exec experience running a large influential state is more than three running a small politically unimportant state. Did you take arithmetic in school by chance.

I like Mrs. Palin and what she stands for, but she is nowhere near ready to run for President and if she does in 2012 the Republicans will see the greatest defeat in political history.

Let her get more real experience under her bra before running. Why not run and get elected as senator from Ak. and serve a FULL term.

Failing that I think she has a great future as a talk show host or as one of Hanitty's babes.

However, Mrs Palin is smart, truthful, attractive, can debate, and not too proud to listen to others' solutions and intelligent enough to know what it the best. She would be good at picking smart people to surround her to advise her, I beleive. There's more but I think she or Michele Bauchman are the best to surface so far. Out with the old...in with the new ideas to win in 2012.

Now that Obama and Co's radical left-wing policies to take over and turn our democracy into a totalitarian government has been revealed, any decent Republican/Conservative, including the inexperienced but likeable Sarah Palin, can run on the platform of "Anyone but Obama" and win. Good luck to you and yours in 2012. Heck, even 44% of the nation would rather have George W. Bush back than put up with another day of Obama. No, I don't believe Obama will be laughing last or best. BTW: I'd rather listen to Rush, Beck, Malkin and the Founding Fathers, than Olbermann, Maher, Maddow, Matthews and Marx.
Suggested reading for you lefties: The Declaration of Independece, The Constitution, The Federalist Papers, On Liberty, Common Sense. Good luck with that because it doesn't fit with the drug laced koolaid you have been drinking provided by the left wing MSM. Is that tingling sensation still running up your leg? An appropriate side affect not covered under govt run healthcare, I'm sure.

Basically, liberal children believe that we can vote on everything, and majority rules. That is, we can vote on whether a cat is male or female, whether -21 in Calgary in December is a sign of Climate Change, whether 2 and 2 make 6, and whatever the voters decide is the truth.

Above all else, they believe that all the problems in the world can be solved by passing a law demanding they be solved, and taxing TheRich to pay for it.

You have discovered the deep truth that it is The Middle Class that is the target of the Collectivists. The history of America, and Liberty, is the history of the rise and success of the Middle Class. Throughout all of history, the Middle Class: capitalist, Liberal (in the classic sense), rational, steeped in Protestant ethic (whatever the espoused religion or lack of) has been despised by the Tribalist/Nationalists and the socialist utopians. In the scope of history, I am afraid that this brief flowering of Liberty, and Enlightenment, will be a mere flash bulb punctuating the dark ignorance of societies ruled by priests or party apparatchiks.

The term "protecting freedom requires eternal vigilance" doesn't refer to protection from external enemies. No one can beat us one on one. It refers to eternal vigilance from those inside the country who would pervert the original intent of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Read the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Federalist Papers to find out what you are losing, and then begin by removing those in office who would destroy what this country was, and keep replacing them until you find those that would restore what we lost.

We really must try to reclaim the word Liberal. Liberalism obviously is based upon Liberty, not collectivism. Those who define the terms have the advantage in any debate. We, the people who have enacted The Constitution in order to form a more perfect union and to guarantee the recognition of our Rights are the Liberals! Liberal is the person who recognizes the sovereignty of his fellow. Liberal is the system that finds human sacrifice abhorrent. (The only reason Collectivists do not often practice human sacrifice is the lack of belief in its efficacy!)

This is a wonderful artical. I must admit, sometimes when I talk to liberals I get angry and forget all the talking points. They make no sense. When you are discussing something with some one and they present absolute stupidity, you sometimes find yourself searching for a come back, and you find yourself at a loss for words. 19. Being a movie or television star qualifies you to speak out on public policy.
20. Hillary Clinton is a wonderful example for young women of feminine independence even though she has never accomplished anything worthwhile without riding on the coattails of her husband.
21. A handful of religious wackos living in rural Texas are more of a threat to public safety than

22. Passing new laws are a much better way to curb crime than enforcing the existing ones.

In it he differentiates, in broad brush, between those who believe that all problems can be solved from first principles and therefore history provides to lessons and those who believe that cultural dogmas are grounded in experience and that issues (like a centrally planned economy) are too complex to be solved "on the fly".

In one sense, the question may be unanswerable. Why does anyone believe any one thing, in the end?

But, the general answer is more mundane. Progressives have been educated in and by a culture that has taught for over a century that Progressivism is true, enlightened, and moral. Since the more educated tend to occupy positions of influence in academia, media, and government the situation is self-reinforcing and we have the culture you observe, with its inevitable political situation.

Individuals like John Dewey, who had a strong influence on all three institutions named above, started the ball rolling in a major way, though he had forerunners such as Rousseau and Hegel.

Their ideas came to dominate the intellectual life of the country and today's practical circumstances are the result.

It's because they are taught by the State and its power structure to think emotionally rather than critically. It's much easier to feel that it's fair to raise the minimum wage, for example, than to actually think about the full ramifications of the act and realize that if you raise the rates, more qualified people will be selected for the job over those with qualifications more deserving of a lower wage. Those people will be unable to find work, which will raise the number of people on welfare. Those not affected by minimum wage will demand a raise in their salary to compensate for the salary "lost" by increasing the minimum wage. The increased cost of salary will increase the cost of items produced, which makes it more expensive to buy, which increases the pressure to raise salaries to compensate for the inflation, which.....

The liberal voters don't know how to think any way but emotionally. The statist parties in power cater and nurture that level of thinking because it is easier to grow your power when all you have to do is appeal to the emotional nature of people.

Liberalism and the left in general is a relatively small part of the population; some estimates put it at no more than twenty percent. It is, nonetheless, a very, very vocal and demanding group. Its members dominate Washington and while a president—like the last one—might be relatively conservative there is a constant agitation among liberals there for him to foster and support liberal policies. Interestingly, President Reagan did not fall for it. He ignored the Sam Donaldson types and others that hectored him verbally and in print for his conservative policies. Conservative senators and congressmen come under the same pressure and most do not deal with it nearly as well. They should take Reagan’s example and patronize liberals when necessary, but otherwise ignore their demands and treat them as they deserve to be treated; after all, it is in the best interest of the country.

Three Undemocratic Temptations – by Tony Blankley

As the Democrats in Congress approach the end of a frustrating first year’s legislative effort, their leaders and the White House are being tempted by three possible shortcuts around the regular lawmaking process.

Though the Democrats have a majority of 20 seats in the Senate and 79 seats in the House, now, just a week before Christmas, the speaker [1] of the House, the Senate majority leader and the White House have failed — so far — to pass into law their desired legislation in the matters of 1) health care provision and financing, 2) public debt and deficit reduction, and 3) carbon regulation and taxation.

Given the extraordinary effects such policy changes would have on the American economy and the American way of life, to enact such changes without benefit of informed majority votes in the House and Senate would be in violation of the constitutional process — certainly in spirit, perhaps in form.

The schemes, I suppose, are thought to be clever. On health care, because the Constitution requires revenue bills to originate in the House, the plan would take the shell of a minor House revenue bill, and then inserted in it would be the entire final health bill (called a Senate “manager’s amendment”), negotiated largely among Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and such other party leaders as are necessary to ensure that the bill would pass both houses.

Then, with only minutes’ notice, they could pass it in the Senate and hours later in the House, and it would be on the president’s desk within a few more hours for his signature.

The provisions never would be seen or comprehended by most of even the Democratic Party members of the House and Senate. Certainly the public would have no chance to hear about the details, let alone a chance to contact [1] their congressmen to express opinions.

(By contrast, the original Medicare bills were designated as H.R. 1 and S. 1 in January 1965. The House bill moved forward to markup in the Ways and Means Committee and then to passage on the floor of the House on April 8, by a vote of 313-115. The Senate approved its version July 9, 68-21. A conference [1] committee worked for more than a week in mid-July to reconcile 513 differences between the two versions of the bill. President Lyndon Johnson then signed the Medicare bill into law, July 30, 1965.)

On the public debt and deficit crisis, the White House, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, Judd Gregg (the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee) and other leaders (but not Speaker Pelosi, yet) want Congress to create a bipartisan commission [1] that would have authority to add new taxes and rewrite all the tax codes, all the entitlement laws and any other laws affecting revenues or expenses in order to reduce the deficit to no more than 3 percent of gross domestic product. In other words, the commission could transmogrify the entire body of U.S. law, and then — reporting back to Congress after the election — each house of Congress would have one unamendable up-or-down vote.

What a shocking abrogation of representative government. This is not a matter of policy; it is a matter of constitutional process. Even our friends at the left-wing Daily Kos condemned this as “particularly galling” and favorably quoted the “strong opposition” statement of the progressive Campaign for America’s Future, as do I:

“Those supporting this circumvention of the normal process have stated openly the desire to avoid political accountability. Americans — seniors, women, working families, people with disabilities, young adults, children, people of color, veterans, communities of faith and others — expect their elected representatives to be responsible and accountable for shaping such significant, far-reaching legislation.”

Amen, my brothers and sisters [1] of the left. The day that either of us loves our constitutional process less than we would love to see some particular policy enacted — that’s the day democracy dies in America.

Finally, as the White House does not expect to be able to pass a cap-and-trade bill in the Senate, it has announced that it intends — without benefit of legislation — to have the Environmental Protection Agency regulate (i.e., tax, restrict or prohibit) any source that emits as little as 250 tons of carbon dioxide a year (or, in some cases, 100 tons). At 250 tons a year, the kitchen in a restaurant, the heating system in an apartment or office building, or the running a family farm would trigger federal regulation; potentially, more than 1 million buildings, 200,000 manufacturing operations and 20,000 farms would fall under the arbitrary power of the state.

Of course, all these methods have been used before — commissions to decide base closings or Social Security changes, sharply interpreted expansion of regulatory authority over some small new category of creature or process, middle-of-the-night legislative passage of a pork-laden spending bill.

But the proposals before us now are of such a magnitude as to transform American life and work as we have known it. Whatever the motives of their leaders, it is within the power — and it is the duty — of the rank-and-file members of Congress to insist on regular legislative order. Their careers — to say nothing of the republic — may require that insistence.

This is a huge problem - for one, this talk of a third "Tea Party" party is ill advised. It's ok by me if the Tea Party folks take over the GOP, but a third party will simply fracture the conservative vote - the very same thing that brought us Bill Clinton.

Second, even if the GOP were comandeered by the Tea Party mentality, we would very quickly find ourselves betrayed by the "reformers" we elect - as Pete Townsend said, "Meet the New Boss - Same as the Old Boss."

The reason is the way government is now constructed. Our elected officials immediately become ensconced in a world where they are seduced and intoxicated by power - even those who resist. Why? Becuase they're guaranteed huge benefits for life, they deal with lobbyests far more often than they deal with constituents, and the apparatus of government has become to big, and too inertial, for anyone to resist. Government grew under Reagan - not because he was a hypocrite or succumbed to Washington's Ways - it was because the bureaucracy is far, far bigger than any one reformer - or any group of reformers. Look how quickly the Contract for America devolved - and its one shining victory, Welfare reform, has been neutered in any case.

The fact is, as Tytler said, once a populace realizes they can vote themselves goodies from the Federal Treasury, it's OVER. And really, liberalism comes down to that in the end.

I think it'll take a herculean effort, starting with a 5-million taxpayer seige of - not march on - Washington that is so big that big media cannot ignore it because they won't be able to leave their homes becuase the streets will be clogged with people.

I also think we need to have conservatives with deep pockets step up and take over some mainstream media outlets. We have to change the culture in this country. Because it has devolved to empty posturing, where "caring" is measured by how willing you are to steal from person "A" to give to person "B" - picking up not only a halo for yourself, but skimming a bit off the top in the process.

It's going to take a massive awakening of the silent majority, of conservatives like me who are very busy with their lives and don't typically turn to government for answers - in short, it's going to take a revolution - it can be peaceful or it can get ugly, but that's the only way things are going to change.

Like Sarah Palin said recently~ We have a 2 party system in this country, and that she is in agreement with its conservative planks.. this is where I am too. IF it were a reality to be able to vote third party and win, it'd be one thing, but it isn't.
And like Rush basically said~ Name me a Socialist or a Marxist in the Republican Party! There aren't any!

As I say, I think a lot of it is that the system is so rigged now that even principled Republicans have little chance of going against the tide - let alone the RINOs, of which there are too many.

True, there are no Marxists in the Republican party, but I do wonder about socialists - far be it from me to demur from Rush, with whom I agree more than any other conservative pundit - but if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck, even if you call it a goose.

It's not that any Republicans are dyed-in-the-wool socialists, but there are too many who are ideologically weak, and membership in "the club" overrides their original intent such that, hey, who are they to fight the deluge of Big Government? Might as well swim with the current.

For example, I think Charlie Crist would be happy to go where ever the wind takes him. And I think the Bush family's innate sense of Noblesse Oblige pushes them dangerously close to socialism - what else is compassionate conservativism? It's agreeing with Democrats the Government is sometimes the answer when in fact it is NEVER the answer.

I think in his mind Bush was a conservative, but he ceded far too much ground to libs - never vetoing a bill in his first term, letting Ted Kennedy write the education bill, Social Security, illegal alien amnesty and on and on and on.

I worry about a guy like Romney - he's extremely competent and he's properly oriented and, I think sincere - but I fear he'd be pushed around by the Washington zeitgeist - he's a competent manager, not a leader of men (and his performance in the 08 campaign - in which I supported him - was very, very disappointing).

We need a true leader, and those are rare. That's why so many of us are looking to Palin, and I really hope she has the mojo - but it hasn't been proven to me - yet - that she does (but believe me, I'm rooting for her).

Now they'e talking about Pawlenty. So far, I'm not that impressed, but I'm willing to be persuaded!

I have thought about it - Unfortunately, I had a fairly wild youth, and I think by the time the media researchers got to my antics in fifth grade, that would be it for me.

Not that I was horrible - but let's just say I unofficially minored in do-it-yourself pharmacology in college and grad school.

I always wanted to persuade people in other ways, and, frankly, I never thought our society would devolve to the point it has.

I don't think that's true. After all, it was the creation of a "third party," specifically the break up of the Democratic Republicans into the Democrats and the Republicans that allowed Conservatism to advance and flourish for almost 100 years. It is the belief on the "two party rule,":especially in the last 20 years, than has caused Conservatism to flounder in the Republican Party.

As both party's know that a lot of Americans , like yourself, believe that a third party, a party independent from the two major parties, is not a viable threat to the existence of those two parties, this belief has lead to both parties become virtually indistinguishable in their proposed legislation and in their actions, the votes they cast.. It doesn't matter any more what the stated ideals of the members of two party's are, they both are becoming indistinguishable in their actions, especially their voting patters and election strategies. (one of those strategies, by the way, is to claim, again and again, that a third party is not a viable idea in America and would actually be detrimental to our system of government even though the two party system itself has become detrimental to our system of government. But nether party want yet another party in which to compete with, so let's go there, shall we? That would hurts their election chances, does it not?)

Contrary t the claims of the member of the two party system, it is the existence of a their party, the threat of an interruption of the shared power of the two parties, that allows members of a particular party to actually follow their own stated ideals and not feel obliged to follow the "party line" and cast votes that are in direct opposition to their stated ideals.

Once a member of a particular party realizes that they can find support of their ideals OUTSIDE the main parties while maintain the ability to affect law, and one the rest of the members of those parties realize this ability, the members of any given party will be more inclined to vote according to their beliefs as the coercive power of any party is reduce when any given member has several sources of support.

The more choices a given politician has in finding sources of support OUTSIDE their own party, the more likely they are to follow their own ideals and beliefs rather than having to accede to the majority in their own party in which to find support.

Therefor, the existence of a viable third party, whether that party has a majority or not, is actually a benefit to the representation of one's own constitutions than a limitation a two-party system imposes uopn them through those two party's control of access and support structures.

In other words, the addition of a third party will force politicians to be more accountable to their constituency and less accountable to the party itself. For when a politician can be actually held accountable for their state goals as a representative, as is likly when there is a good possibility that a THIRD party candidate will be a better representative to the constituency, something the two party system reduces, the more likely that politician will actually abide by the wishes and demands of their constituency rather than their fellow party members.

So, you want to see more Conservatives in Government? Well, you're not going to see that happen that as long as people, like yourself, believe that a third party would be detrimental to America. It is the threat of a third party, the threat of another source of support, where you'll see politicians acting according to their stated goals and believes as opposed to following the party line or risk losing the support and access that party offers in exchange for a politician's vote.

If you need an example of the power of a third party, look to the Clinton years, especially the 1992 election and the result that election had on the Republican Party. . The support that the Reform party received during that election, 15 percent of the popular vote, directly lead to the creation of the Republican's "Contract with America." Had the Reform party not garnered so much support amongst "ordinary" Americans' that "contract,' and the resurgence of Conservatism amongst the Republican we witnessed at that time, would never have occurred.

Once the Reform party was no longer a threat, one it lost support amongst the American people, that "Contract with America" was abandoned and the Republicans, one again, became almost indistinguishable from Democrats, all because they didn't face the competition for office form a third party.

The prime focus for the election of 2010 is : "get rid of the Democrats period. That means channel all energy into that one goal. No deviations of third parties. And, it should be made clear that that try this are sabateurs of the left. Any third party candidate should be equated with the Democrat left. This is a very practical issue .

As to the curruption thru power- it does not matter who is control. Power currupts. I suspect that the best that can be achieved is divided government where no one party has total control.

As to the issue of the media thius is a serious problem indeed. It is ironic that the forces that have MSM control are the same ones who call for the "fairness doctrine" I think that if one wants to talk along those lines then all ,media should be subjected to "fairness doctrines and that means for example that CNN is required to have conservative commentators or PBS is required to have real conservatives ( not your David Brooks phonies ) etc etc. And yes, it would be preferable not to depend only on"fair and balanced" Fox News Just some random thoughts from a random
citizen.

In addition to 'laughing at the left', I suggest everyone read one of the editorials on ATLAS SHRUGS today that suggests severals ways to fight [non-violently] these domestic terrorists' policies-----DEFUND AND DISOBEY. The suggestion is that if Republicans could win enough House seats in 2010 to obtain a majority, that it would be possible to [through a pledge from each/every Republican elected] to have as it mian goal the DEFENDING of their governmental programs/mandates/policies,etc. It's an interesting and [I think] viable political strategy. I suggest reading same and commenting/discussing here to possibly get some kind of movement started!!!!

I wouldn't try too hard figuring it out. It'll give you migraines.
In brief though: We're all born liberal. Liberalism is all about good feelings, selfishness, I want what you got and if you don't give it to me I'll cry and demand it, etc. etc. When you grow up, you usually learn to give up those childish ways. Conservatives (or right-minded people) learn that the world doesn't revolve around them, that they need to make a living for themselves, that "it isn't all about me" that life isn't always fair, but that if you work hard you can make it because this is the land of plentious opportunity, etc.
The problem is, whether through our government run school system (mostly), and/or Parents who are Liberal and pass it on to their children, some don't learn to mature.
In a nutshell, that's it. Hope that helps. Anybody want to add to that?

The anaphora that structures your essay ("They believe ... They believe... The left believes ... etc) is eloquent and, I suppose, effect rhetorically, but it betrays a flawed view of the American electorate.

Most people, as you know, aren't "liberals." Yet values and policies famously backed by "liberals" continue to be approved by a large percentage of the electorate. And of course there's a big mix out there: a person may love Medicare but resent affirmative action; a person may be pro-life but in favor of increased educational spending.

The only thing I see worth laughing at are the simpletons who buy into this kind of lame reductivism -- a reductivism that is, by the way, toxic to the body politic and a debasement of public discourse.

I know of no one that likes medicare it is a pile , I paid into it since 1965 I believe that is when it went in to effect . So instead of loving it I am stuck with it . I would like for it to go away if nothing else for the good of the country . We could phase it out by attrition , stop medicare for all under 30 and those that have a vested interest they could opt to place the money in a private account for their retirement . I of course would be stuck with it till I die because the governement has all the money I spent on it and I could not afford to pay for health care on my own. I do not hope for a public option as I have seen how a governement run post office thrives and also how medicare is a doctors and patients night mare. You are right about not many are liberals , the sad fact is they are in power now.

MOST Americans like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. MOST Americans want a PUBLIC OPTION in this healthcare bill.

Conservatism has a long and justifiably proud tradition in this country, and is as American as apple pie. However, it has dramatically changed over recent decades with the emergence of the more secular rightism of Barry Goldwater and especially the New Right activism under the leadership of folks like (the late) Paul Weyrich and Irving Kristol, Norman Podhoretz, and others. That is, it has dramatically devolved to a dogma driven ideological movement and relentless cultural warfare. Recall that the aforementioned Paul Weyrich founded the Heritage Foundation and also the Moral Majority with Jerry Falwell. In fact, Weyrich coined the phrase “moral majority”. As one of the foremost conservative leaders of our time, his influence on conservative policy and practices cannot be overstated. What should concern free-spirited Americans of all stripes are the avocations made by him and others of the New Right persuasion, perhaps best exemplified in his publication “Integration of Theory and Practice” wherein he states:

From Paul Weyrich's training manual -

1.Falsehoods are not only acceptable, they are a necessity. The corollary is: The masses will accept any lie if it is spoken with vigor, repetition, energy and dedication.

2.It is necessary to be cast under the cloak of “goodness” whereas all opponents and their ideas must be cast as “evil.”

3.Complete destruction of every opponent must be accomplished through unrelenting personal attacks.

4.The creation of the appearance of overwhelming power and brutality is necessary in order to destroy the will of opponents to launch opposition of any kind.

Sound familiar??

Over the course of the Fall campaign and since his inauguration, our President has been subjected to all manner of vulgar, belligerent, hateful speech from the Conservative Hate Machine. Here are some documented examples uttered by Republican officials and supporters .... that have appeared both in the media and on numerous right-wing journalistic forums and at rallies.

He's a “Muslim” .. he's an “Islamic Fascist” .. he's, he's an “Arab” .. he's the “Messiah” .. he's the “Savior” .. he's “Barack the magic negro” .. he's a “member of Hamas” ... he “hates America” .. he's “Godless” .. he's “that one” .. he's a “Socialist” .. he's a “Racist” .. he's the “Anti-Christ” .. he's a “Communist” .. he's “Evil” .. he's a “Nazi” .. he's a “Gangsta Rapper” .. he's a “Traitor” .. he wants to “euthanize the elderly” .. he's a “fascist dictator” .. he's a “Jihadist” .. he's “gonna take away our guns” .. “Kill him, Kill him” .. “Off with his head” .. he's an “Illegal Alien” .. he “forged his birth certificate” .. he's “Adolf Hitler” .. he's a “Terrorist”.. he “should be buried with Kennedy”.

Does this look like the kind of speech one would expect from true American patriots .. or does this sound more like mob speech? Wouldn't a true American say “he's our “President”? The late Paul Weyrich would be proud of this ad hominem belligerence. Abraham Lincoln would be deeply ashamed.

But the current mainstream GOP doesn't stop with offensive hate speech. Indeed, here's a more recent demonstration of morality and American spirit coming from these protectors of American values .. on display at the Capital during the GOP's Thursday, November 5 mob rally against health insurance reform led by the House Republicans. Prominently displayed at our our Nation's Capital in front of the speaker podium was a large banner containing a terrible Holocaust image showing a pile of dead, naked, emaciated bodies that reads National Socialist Health Care, Dachau Germany, 1945.

True Conservatives are inherently skeptical .. cautious .. even loath to take leaps of “faith”. Historically, they greatly value empiricism and are resolutely guided by it in policy formulations. .. and they are pragmatic. The party also has progressive roots, valuing incremental change over revolutionary shifts. Sadly, this empiric discipline has been replaced by dogma, hubristic confabulation and a descent into hysteria. And, in the face of the catastrophic failure of “supply-side” economics .. driven by a party that controlled the Presidency, Congress, or Both for the last 14 years prior to the last election, the GOP has mired themselves and this country in a miasma of failed policies. They've also burdened this country with a legacy of debt. As a factual matter, since 1945, four of every five dollars of added national debt were accumulated under Republican presidents, a total of $7 trillion. Blinded by ideology .. they are unable to come to terms with what they've done and are desperate, in the Weyrich tradition, to destroy anything that runs counter to their failed beliefs. Worse still, the GOP has codified all this into a “true republican” litmus test that is antithetical to many of its progressive roots, and antagonistic to all those in the party that advocate reform.

I don't think this is what John Adams had in mind for the American colonies. True pragmatic, working, deliberative Conservatism evolved well into the 20th century .. as exemplified by the Eisenhower and Rockefeller Republicans (now derisively called RINOs .. Republicans In Name Only). In its place, the current Grand Old Party's conservatism has devolved to a sad, twisted, ideologically driven parody of its former self .. a parody that came to devastating fruition under Ronald Reagan and G.W Bush, now led by hate radio talk show and television hosts. Sadly for all of us, this pestilence of failure will be with us for years to come.

I've written this before on this website on different articles and on other websites and it looks like it's time to write it again.

I see a lot of left/right bickering here. Consider the following:

In the words of Ronald Regan, "Government is not the answer, government is the problem." I think that Regan was almost right. I think that the problem is politics. Politics is not the answer, politics is the problem.

People on both sides of the political spectrum have decided that they have some "right" to determine the lifestyles of the people living on the other end of the spectrum.

I didn't vote for obama and I didn't vote for bush. The last guy I voted for was Perot. Perot was the last guy I heard speaking in terms of truisms. Consider this...

I'm not a republican or a democrat or an independent. I don't care who you marry. I don't care if you marry, what you marry or how many you marry. I don't care if you go to church or where you go to church. I don't care who you vote for or if you vote. I don't care if or what you smoke, snort, inject or ingest. What you do in the privacy and comfort of your own home with or without another consenting, mature adult is your problem. Please have the common decency to leave me out of your activities, thank you.

For the people on the right, think about this: let the boys that want to marry boys marry boys. Let the girls that want to marry girls marry girls. Let the women that want to kill their unborn babies kill their unborn babies. Before long there won't be any democrats. Now really, how hard can this be?

Same case with recreational drug use. Folks that spend all of their time screwed up on drugs can't hold jobs so there are fewer people in the job market competing for jobs. There, piece of cake.

I've heard the argumant that drugs cost society a lot of money and to an extent this is true. Legalize drugs with the cavieat that when you show up at the hospital with a drug related persistent medical condition then that's it, you're on your own. Same with smoking and out of wedlock pregnancies and the like.

If an individual wants to engage in self destructive behaviors then let them. If you want to totally disable the left, agree with them. Show up at the hospital with COPD after smoking a pack and a half a day for twenty years and the doctor says, "we can take care of you but it's going to cost YOU (not the government) a lot of money." Such a policy will, trust me on this one, will stop smoking in it's tracks.

I hear the arguement that if you were to legalize drugs you'd have people driving up and down the road in cars on drugs. Like you don't have people driving up and down the road on drugs now.

Think of the impact on crime, especially organized crime. If wal-mart were selling cocaine over the counter for a buck a gram the hoodlums on the street selling crack for $25.00 a rock would be out of business.

If you want to truely and critically damage the political left in this country then give them what they want.

I'm for getting up in the morning and going to work and making a living and not having most of what I earn stolen by criminal politicians so that they can pander to a heriditary welfare class. Or criminal politicians that spend billions attemptting to fight a collection of uneducated, uncoordinated, half-wit savages halfway around the world for no apparent reason at all. (I know what they're trying to do and why, I don't like the approach.)

I'm tired of being told that the gas that I exhale when I speak is melting the world. I'm tired of "experts" and "advocates" of whatever political persuasion attempting to make all my decisions for me. I'm a big boy, I'd like to take a swing at the problem.

We have alternate oil free energy production tecchnologies that can be implemented. We have the Z-Axis/ITER process and the Pebble Bed Fission reactor design. We have breeder reactor fission technology to reduce massive amounts of radioactive waste. I don't hear the current criminal-in-chief talking about any of these technologies. I didn't hear the last criminal-in-chief talking about these technologies either.

We put Neil Armstrong on the moon. A geeky kid named Sy Rosenbloom did it with a stick. I think that we can build a power plant. Really.

I'm disturbed that few people are disturbed that the current criminal-in-chief refuses to answer a simple question of proving where he was born in compliance with the law of the land. I'm disturbed that the last criminal-in-chief pronounced the word "Nuclear" as "nookalur." I think that the guy that has the keys to the freekin' gun cabinet should be able to speak conventional english.

I'm tired of having a "Just-Us" system in this country instead of a justice system. I'm tired of seeing people like the president of the United States of America commit perjury in front of a federal judge, on TV in front of God and Everybody and have idiots defend the scoundrel when if you you or I had pulled the same stunt we'd be packed off to a federal prison for at least five years.

I could go on and on.

I'm tired of people speaking in cliches such as "if you don't vote, don't complain." The truth of the matter is as plain as the nose on your face. We get a choice of the criminal that's going to rob us and indenture us and that's about it.

We have a national debt of over twelve trillion dollars now. The Chinese don't want any more to do with our deficit spending habits and I don't blame them. I'm tired of politicians attempting to spend the country out of a depression when common sense and personal experience will indicate to anyone with a hat full of brains that when you've spent more money than you have, spending even more money doesn't make the situation any better.

What business person will allow you to write them a check to cover a cold check that you've written? How many cold checks are "We the People" going to allow these clowns to write?

I'm tired of being told that we can't afford to tell the UN to go screw themselves and put the seven hundred billion dollars a year that we the people contribute to their annual operating budget toward paying off the debt. While the UN bureacracy sits there in their American taxpayer financed office space in New York City and run this country into the ground.

I'm tired of paying three hundred billion dollars a year in order to finance the DEA and their "War on Drugs" when you can choose to spend nothing, decriminalize what are called "Drugs" and have these self same "Drugs" disappear from our streets. Didn't we learn anything from alcohol prohibition?

I'm tired of dealing with people on a day to day basis that appear to be reasonable, rational and sane individuals who turn out to be suffering from a mental disorder.

We have problems, problems, problems and we have answers to lots of these problems. We sit in front of the one-eyed baby sitter and have idiots of the likes of Wolf Blitzer and Peter Jennings tell us that we're screwed. Screw those guys.

I guarantee you that I can turn the world into a peaceful and productive place. All you got to do is identify the criminals, tell them one time to get their hand out of your pocket and if they fail to comply then break their hand.

You want a better world then go get it. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome. We've been electing criminals since the first depression that have reduced our nation to the world's largest debtor nation and tell us not to worry because the "experts" say that it's all OK.

You know better. You know better. We all know better.

What do you do about the problem? Simple. When you hear the same old sewage running out of the same old politicians do something different, stay home on election day. Remember Viet Nam and folks saying "What if they had a war and nobody came?" I say, "What if they had an election and nobody showed up." I think that somebody would decide to alter the equation if the vote tally in November were to be zero to zero.

The idea that someone using whatever sundry chemicals for recreational purposes somehow or another is bad for society. How you decide to kill yourself is your problem.

The idea that some group of people half way around the world that don't even have a national power grid, interstate highway system and use still use steam powered choo-choo trains is somehow a threat to national security.

The idea that (in common with liberals) deficit spending is somehow or another good.

I'm sure that there are other aspoects of conservitism that resemble mental disorders. I'll think about the idea some more.

Realistically I think that I tend to be more conservitive than liberal. I still say that I'm neither though.

Based on the assumption that someone's behavior has no impacts on bystanders I can't understand why anyone would care what the individual does. We have the right to life, liberty and the persuit of happiness.

I have my life, for now. My liberty has been seriously impeded by liberals and conservitives. I can't do as I please as long as I do not impact anyone else for fear of attracting the attention of a car load of thugs with guns and badges. By virtue of my liberties being impeded my persuit of happiness has also been impeded. I am robbed at gunpoint every two weeks in order to underwrite the life and happiness of someone that hasn't earned either.

When I say "robbed at gunpoint" every two weeks stop paying your taxes and see what happens. A promise you that a carload of thugs with guns and badges will show up at your house to take what they decide is theirs. If you give them any crap about it at all they'll kill you.

Should we pay taxes? Of course, it is the obligation of citizens to support their society physically and financially. I resent being robbed to keep paying little girls to produce another generation of useless, government dependant eaters.

Conservatives don't feel that your use of a 'recreational" drug is a problem, as long as that use affects only yourself. It''s when your use of that drug affects others, like when you kill someone to get their money so you can buy more drugs, that's the problem. You may believe that your use of a drug is a not a problem, but when that use leads to crime, as some many "illegal" drugs do, then there's no such things.as a "harmless" drug. As a Conservative, I say: smoke all the pot and drop all the downers you want , but when you come onto MY property and steal MY things just to feed YOUR drug use, then you and are going to have a problem!

We have direct evidence that the people you describe, those without "technology," used OUR technology to kill thousands of Americans citizens. You may not realize this, but threats are not dependent upon a society's (or individual's) level of technology, they are dependent upon motivation and determination as to achieving a goal. When that goal is the death and destruction of a single American, let along our entire society (as is the goals of the people who fly planes into buildings) than that is REAL threat. It doesn't matter if you're going to be attacked by a hijacked car or a nuclear weapon, the threat is the same. We CAN NOT ignore a threat simply because we believe that the person or persons planning on attacking us is too technologically inept or "disadvantaged" to cause us harm. It was that belief, that they don't have the means to harm us, that lead to the attacks on 9/11.

The true madness is assuming that your actions do not affect the actions of otherwise, that your "rights" supersede the right s of others, that Man is an island, beholden only onto themselves. Everyting we do affects every ones around us. therefor, it is necessary for us to create rules, laws, in which to regulate our behavior, to control our actions and the actions of others. Without such rules, without such laws, we create nothing more than chaos, and no individual, group, or society can survive for long in a chaotic environment.

-American tax payers don't have to work a large chunk of the year to send money ($1 billion a day) to China, Japan and the petro-states to finance the deficits caused by GOP tax-cuts that don't pay for themselves.
-Support for hunters who shoot their friends and blame them for wearing orange vests similar to those worn by the quail.
-With the economic collapse: like arsonists watching a house burn .. the GOP stands by and hurls epithets at those who are trying to put it out.

Most of what you have written here is factually in error. I have another obligation at present but I'll write more on the topic later.

One point for now in regards to the Geneva Convention, the Geneva Convestion has specifically to do with governmental operators. Governmental operators in this case are considered to be members of a military organization operating in behalf of a government. Traditionally people caught carrying weapons on a battlefiels, out of uniform and without documentation proving their affiliation (dog tags for example) were shot as spies.

Just one case in point.

I said that I'd write more so here I go.

I read a book years ago in regards to information in regards to intelligence gathering. If memory serves it was written by William Casey.

Now, in regards to torturing people. I'm sure that some folks were tortured. What is the magnitude of the problem? Hard to say.

Have you ever had surgery and were anaesthetized? I have, just recently.

There was a scandal a couple years back. The wife of a state politician had some surgery performed and during the course of the surgery informed the folks in the operating room of her maritial infidelities and the like and word got out.

If I understand this correctly state of the art anesthesia leaves the patient largely conscious, apparently capable of communicating and the like but unable to remember what has happened to them or to control what they say.

Now, if we have such technology then why would you bother to mistreat anyone when you can give them a shot and wait a couple of minutes then ask them questions and get the answers that you want?

I would think that maybe this story of torturing people was promoted in order to have an influence on enemy combattents. They know that if they're captured that they are going to be mistreated so they're perhaps more cooperative and the like.

Just a suggestion. I'd think that in regards to this issue that there's some fire but more smoke.

I really ought to stay out of this because I made some really stupid comments late last night. I'm not too bright some times.

Did you know that there are three ways to lie? Lie number one is the way that you lie when you are a child. "Hey mom, there's an orange and white zebra in the front yard." You don't run into lie number one too much because it's the easiest way to get caught.

Lie number two is the lie that media news outlets and politicians tell. Lie number two only uses part of the information, the part of the information that serves the purpose of the liar. There's the atatement that we're torturing people. OK, where are these people, what evidence do they have. How, many? Who? What? When? Where? Why?

The third way to lie is the way that the military lies and that's to tell the truth in such a fashion that it won't be believed. For example, military battlefiels radio commiunications are in large part fictious, computers talking back and forth to each other, completely false communications. Salted into this communication traffic are some real communication threads. How does the enemy tell which is which in time to make any difference?

Main stream media makes money by sensationalizing news in order to hold the attention of the viewer. Then they can sell beer or toothpaste. Wouldn't someone like yourself say society can only deal with them when their actions "impact" on someone else?

So, if a meth-head gets in a car, that's okay, as long as he doesn't infringe on my rights? Should it be every man for themselves on the public roadways? It's the responsibility of the individual to protect himself, isn't it?

And public drunkeness laws are wrong, right? If a drunk doesn't bother anybody else, who cares what he does to himself.

As a Christian, I believe society has an obligation to protect those who cannot protect themselves. When you alter your brain chemistry to the point that you are a danger to yourself, society must intervene.

The reason alcohol should be treated differently than other drugs is because many drugs can't be tested, for one thing. Also, we tried banning alcohol 90 years ago. It didn't work out so well.

We should tolerate alcohol, while severely punishing those who abuse it. We should not compound the devastation of drinking and driving by legalizing drugs so we can have more deaths.

A Christian cares about both the individual AND society. You don't believe in LIBERTY, you believe in LIBERTINISM. There is a huge difference.

When the political authority (government) declares to the rest of society that a specific act or activity is wrong, we call that a LAW.

What makes a law JUST is when it is based on God's Law. Rights are a gift from God. When man's law violate these God-given rights and His Laws, they are unjust. This is what made America great.

I suggest you read what the Founders read in the lead up to the War of Independence. If you don't know who they read, try Blackstone, Grotius, and de Vattel as a start.

Towns and counties were allowed to make all kinds of ordinances. Like no alcohol sales in a county. Or all businesses must close on Sunday. Or that you couldn't walk your pig on Mainstreet.

These laws did not violate anyone's rights. Because there is no right to buy alcohol, or doing business on Sunday, or walking your pig. If you didn't like it, you tried to change the law or you moved to a place that didn't outlaw such activity.

People sell drugs to make lots and lots and lots of money.

A business is a black box. Raw materials, power and labor go into the black box. Finished product comes out of the black box. What the black box does is that an investor puts a dollar into the black box and the black box gives the investor back his dollar with some number of pennies.

The competition in regards to the black box from the perspective of the investor is to locate the black box that returns the dollar in the shortest amount of time with the most pennies.

The drug peddler punk piece of human garbage down on the corner with his nine tucked in his laundry has a black box that gives back dollars for every dollar put in. From the perspective of the investor this punk has the best black box.

Now ask yourself, what do you do to put this punk with the black box out of business? ELIMINATE HIS PROFIT MARGIN. The punk down on the street corner can't compete with wal-mart.

Now, if wal-mart decides not to sell heroin over the counter there could be a problem. However, I refer you to the history of this country when you could walk into the neighborhood pharmacy and buy heroin or cocaine or codine or whatever your little heart desired over the counter no questions asked. You didn't have criminals engaged in turf wars and the like. You didn't have problems with prison overcrowding. You didn't have street gangs. You didn't have cops falling all over each other and the like.

Have you ever stopped and thought about the perversity of the relationship between the cops and the drug dealers? The only difference between these criminals is that some of the criminals have badges and some don't.

I won't tell you the number of hours that I've spent trying to teach cops to shoot. Trust me on this one, the criminals with the badges are in a lot of cases worse than the criminals without the badges.

Six out of ten cops that I know personally I wouldn't turn loose with a sharp stick let alone a handgun and a pump shotgun.

The drug dealers depend on the cops to keep the price of their commodity high. The cops depend on the drug dealers to justify their existance. The "war on Drugs" will be perpetual and you, sucker, are going to pay for this "War" forever.

Now, me on the other hand, I don't have trouble with drugs. I don't mess with the stufff. I have two college aged children that have not to my knowledge ever messed with drugs.

What do you do with the idiot that gets into his car under the influence of one drug or another? perhaps for the first offence you put him in the empty jail for ten or so years. The second time around you shoot him.

Another point, I think that you misread the history. When there was no government restriction on access to whatever drugs one desired their use was probably fairly low. Nobody knows for sure as best as I can tell because nobody collected information.

On the other hand we do know that the "experts" of the day, Dr. Sigmund Freud for example used to administer cocaine for just about everything.

One thing that we do know for sure is that there weren't bands of armed thugs, with or without badges, roaming the country or the city. I reiterate, if you eliminate the profit margin in the drug business there won't be half the people involved.

Look, this is easy. I don't use drugs. I don't think that anyone with sense enough to pound sand messes with drugs. However , I don't have the right to dictate to you. What you do in your house is your business.

I concede the car point. Don't get messed up and get in your car.

I think that our difference in opinion has to do with approach to the problem. If I'm reading this right you are of the opinion that prohibition of drugs is a good approach to restricting use. My opinion is that unrestricted access to drugs will reduce both the use of drugs and the availability of drugs.

Now, not to be a jerk or anything but history proves that prohibition is a failed methodology. Whenever prohibition has been tried it has failed. Prohibition is the mentality that puts the money making potential into the proscribed substance. Prohibition is the stance that results in the most violence and destruction.

The reason that I wrote that drug use was probably fairly low was because if drug abuse prior to prohibition, if drug abuse was a rampant problem, there would be some historical record of the fact. Wouldn't you think that there would be newspaper articles and the like written about crimes being committed by people under the influence of some drug or another that they had purchased legally from a local pharmacy?

According to Wikipedia the Black Hand gang was a political extremist group in Serbia circa 1911 dedicated to the assasination of Franz Ferdinand. Did they have some drug link?

Again, according to Wikipedia the five points gang was involved in gambling and prostitution in New York in the early part of the 20th century. No mention of drugs. (Although I'd say that if they were in to gambling and prostitution that they probably sold drugs too however I'd also say that peddling drugs would have been a lean business because of that neighborhood pharmacy.)

I will agree with your assessment that punishment of drug offenders has failed. That is true and apparent to the casual observer. However I will say that short of extermination upon detection no form of "progressive" correction can or will work. There aren't enough jails and the state doesn't have enough money.

Trust me on this one, the cops know for sure and quite well who the local junkies are. As long as the junkies don't bother anybody the the largest number of cases the cops don't bother the junkies. Why is this you might ask? processing the junkies through the "Just-Us" system ties up the judges rendering the court system even less functional than it is at present. Processing the junkies fills up the jails so that you wind up paroling the junkies to make room for some genuinely dangerous people. Processing the junkies absorbs massive amounts of capital in rehabilitave medical treatment during and after incarceration.

Why is it do you think that the government qualifies heroin junkies for socialist security? Because putting a heroin junkie in a public housing unit, providing the in-duh-vidual with food stamps and the like and pumping the in-duh-vidual full of methadone is cheaper than putting them in jail.

Heroin junkies start getting out of hand then they need a fix, don't have any money and heroin costs around $100.00 a fix. That's when old folks get hit over the head for their socialist security checks and the like.

Sell heroin dow to the wal-mart and the stuff will cost less than $5.00 a dose and we all live happily ever after. Put ten percent of the money that this society wastes into educating the public on what happens to people addicted to drugs. Do something productive.

What we do at present certianly isn't working.

The point is, there were bands of thugs roaming the city a hundred years ago and they were involved in criminal activity.

Also, states began prohibiting hard drugs about a century ago. Yet, drug use didn't become the huge problem it is until the 60's and 70's.

Now, if it is prohibition that creates the profit motive, why did it take 50+ years to materialize?

The problem with your argument is that you are comparing the U.S. of today with the U.S. of 1900. Apples and oranges.

People didn't have the money to spend on drugs. There was no welfare state. Robbery was dealt with harshly. Repeat offenders got longer sentences for their second and third offences, not their 35th. Illicit drug production had not been industrialized yet.

There simply was no huge demand for drugs, either before or in the decades after they were criminalized. So no one tried to figure out how to supply them economically for a profit. As demand slowly increased over the decades, organized crime stepped in to fill the supply.

Ask yourself this: Why did states and municipalities start outlawing drugs in the first place? Did they just wake up one day and say, "Hey, lets ban cocaine today. Not because it is a problem, just because we feel like it." I don't think so. Obviously, they started making drugs illegal because of their impact on society.

Please tell me your theory as to why the states started prohibiting drugs, FTM.

In regards to the origins of recreational chemicals, I'm glad you asked.

Marijauana, for example was banned in the US not because of it's chemical properties but because of it's mechanical properties. Marijauana was banned as a textile crop because it is more durable than cotton. As a part of civil war reconstruction congress wanted to encourage the production of cotton in the deep south. Marijauana was produced primarily in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. The idea was to provide southern farmers with a (larger) market for cotton as a cash crop. If you look at pictures of civil way era soldiers, both north and south, you'll sometimes see these guys wearing tan colored pants. That's because these pants were woven from hemp.

Marijauana as a drug was banned because it was used primarily as a free alternative to alcohol by predominantly black and latino field laborers. White people were afraid that marijauana intoxication would send these people into sexual rampages and that no white female would be safe.

Also, it's very difficult to tax the use of a weed. Alcohol comes out of a factory, a brewery or a distillery and can be conveniently taxed.

By the bye, the Romans served a marijauana tea to their galley slaves and other slaves that performed hard manual labor. The marijauana eased the pain induced by hard physical labor and these folks could sleep at night and be ready for another day's work.

We discussed Freud and cocaine. A caviat to the Freud story, Freud stopped using cocaine because of the cardiac problems that became apparent after prolonged cocaine use. By the bye, Freud injected cocaine. I don't know when folks started snorting cocaine.

An aside to cocaine use, Central American indians chew cocoa leaves so that they can live and work at extreme altitudes. Cocaine is made from cocoa. Apparently cocoa leaves suppress the feeling of suffocation when you are in an oxygen poor atmosphere. The Air Farce says that you need oxygen at altitudes over ten thousand feet. Central American indians can perform hard agricultural manual labor at altitudes well in excess of ten thousand feet.

Heroin was first synthesized by a general practioner doctor in Germany in the late 1800's or early 1900's because he noticed that his tuburculosis patients were dying from exhaustion rather than from tuburculosis. The guy wanted the most powerful seditive obtainable at the time which was opium. However opium was smoked and smoking anything for tuburculisis patients was out. So basically the guy created an injectable form of opium vis a vis heroin. At the time being alive with a heroin addiction was generally accepted as a better alternative than being dead from tuburculosis.

There are two formulations of methamphetemine, or just plain 'ol "meth." By the bye, meth is a bad actor and shouldn't be messed with.

By the bye, messing with any of this stuff is a way bad idea.

Anyway there is Nazi meth and American Meth. The German army was experimenting with meth on the eastern front during WWII. They didn't have the manpower that they needed to fight the Russians so they decided that if you could keep a soldier awake and alert for days on end that soldier could act more like three or four soldiers. Meth as a force multiplier.

The American military experimented with meth during the cold war for the same reasons. Bomber crews flying extended missions needed a stimulant to keep them awake and alert for a long, long time.

Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) was accidently produced by some doctor guy in Northern Europe, if memory serves, from ergot fungus that grows on rye grain. The guy was trying to produce a chemical with which to treat psychatric patients. Something along those lines anyway.

Anyway, other than smoking marijauana perhaps five times in my whole life I do not and have never used drugs. However I have studied the topic at length. If you want to make drugs less available in a society then legalize them. If drugs are available commercially the profit margin is low and the number of people involved in the logistics of drug trafficingg are also low.

An added benifit of making drugs commonly available in a society is that it tends to eliminate congenital stupidity from that society, eg. early twentieth century China. Knuckle heads and riff raff smoked opium and eventually killed themselves off. Smart people knew better than to mess with opium and led productive lives. The rub came in China when the opium addicts couldn't afford to buy opium, that's when the crime started. Fast forward a hundred years and the drug related crime in this country revolves around the marketing of recreational drugs. The crime and violence from the selling end, the competition of who is going to sell what where and which cops are going to get a cut. Then there's the crime and violence that comes from users trying to get the money that they need to support their habits. Legalize the stuff and the cost will be low so a user can afford his habit and because the profit margin is low the stuff won't be readily available in the first place.

Look at all the drug violence in Northern Mexico. If cocaine were legal in the US and sold for a dollar a gram instead of one hundred dollars a gram do you think that the folks in Mexico would be so hot to trot to kill off their competition?

Most of the "Hard Drugs" that you refer to didn't exist until the fortys and fifties so they weren't around to be banned, Meth powder coke and LSD for example. Other naturally ocurring chemical substances codeine for example had common medical uses. Abuse was typical but apparently not recognized as being problematic.

Coca-Cola was orginally a product sold by a physician in Atlanta, Georgia called "French Mocha Coca and contained wine, cocaine and soda water. The wine in French Mocha Coca was outlawed in Atlanta before the cocaine was.

The banning of even more common recreational chemicals, marijuana for example was based on racial prejudice and because of government revenue generation problems.

Among the many lessons to be learned from the Bush GOP era is that slash and burn, anti-government approach to governing does not work. An anti-regulatory approach to formulating public protections is utterly untenable. And, as we've seen over the past 8 years of history, the militant, anti-regulatory fervor applied by the GOP has resulted in direct threats to our democratic system.

Getting Hercules to Help You Poptropica

Hercules won’t help you until you have all five items from Zeus’ quest. Once you have the five items, bring them to Athena. Zeus will appear and steal them. The big jerk! Once this happens, talk to Athena and she will tell you that Hercules will help you. You’ll need to have the magic mirror from Aphrodite because Hercules doesn’t want to have to walk. He’s so lazy!
Getting the Hydra Scale poptropica

You can see how to do this in the videos, but basically you need to jump up when the Hydra is about to strike. He will rear one of his heads back to attack and his eyes will bulge out. poptropica
When this happens, jump up in the air and then try to land on top of his head. That head will get knocked out. When all five heads get knocked out, the Hydra will be asleep and you can click on him to get one of the scales. poptropica
