ACORN's Man in the White House

Meet Patrick Gaspard, now in Karl Rove's former position.

Newly discovered evidence shows the radical advocacy group ACORN has a man in the Obama White House.

This power behind the throne is longtime ACORN operative Patrick Gaspard. He holds the title of White House political affairs director, the same title Karl Rove held in President Bush's White House.

Evidence shows that years before he joined the Obama administration, Gaspard was ACORN boss Bertha Lewis's political director in New York.

Lewis, the current "chief organizer" or CEO of ACORN, was head of New York ACORN from at least 1994 through 2008, when she took over as national leader of ACORN. With Gaspard at work in the White House, Lewis might as well be speaking to President Obama through an earpiece as he goes about his daily business ruining the country.

Erick Erickson of the website RedState recently did an excellent job explaining the relationship of Gaspard to Lewis and President Obama so I won't take up space here recalling all his valuable insights. Suffice it to say Erickson reported that Gaspard figures prominently in Lewis's rolodex, which Erickson has in his possession.

Skeptics among you may ask, How do we actually know the low-profile Gaspard, who prefers to work outside the public spotlight and who can hardly be found in Nexis searches at all, was Lewis's right hand man?

Because Gaspard's employment with the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now is acknowledged by no less an authority than ACORN founder Wade Rathke himself. Rathke writes at his blog:

Tell me that 1199's former political director, Patrick Gaspard (who was ACORN New York's political director before that) didn't reach out from the White House and help make that happen, and I'll tell you to take some remedial classes in "politics 101."

The "before that" time period Rathke is referring to is 2003 when Gaspard was executive vice president for political and legislative affairs for 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. According to publicly available disclosure documents, Gaspard registered as a federal lobbyist for SEIU on Oct. 22, 2007. The registration and subsequent disclosures indicate he lobbied Congress on SCHIP, the State Children's Health Insurance Program.

Incidentally, the lines between ACORN and radical left-wing SEIU, whose acronym stands for Service Employees International Union, become fuzzy in places.

SEIU Locals 100 and 880 are part of the ACORN network of organizations. Local 100 in New Orleans is headed by Rathke. SEIU Local 880 in Chicago is headed by longtime ACORN insider Keith Kelleher.

You'd never know about the SEIU connection from visiting ACORN's website, www.acorn.org. That's because the website has been receiving a thorough scrubbing in recent months. On ACORN's affiliated organizations page, references to the two SEIU locals mysteriously disappeared.

It's worth noting that Gaspard's ties to ACORN, SEIU, and Lewis go way back.

According to the Complete Marquis Who's Who, Gaspard has a long history of political involvement stretching back to at least 1989 when he volunteered for the David Dinkins mayoral campaign in New York City. In 2003 he became acting field director for Howard Dean's presidential bid. He was national field director in 2004 for America Coming Together, a now-defunct get-out-the-vote operation that received a $775,000 fine for campaign finance abuses. In 2006 Gaspard was acting political director for SEIU International.

Gaspard also worked for New York's Working Families Party, which is an appendage of ACORN. Lewis is a co-founder of that party -- which endorsed Obama last year --  and has close ties to Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-New York) who has been most reluctant to have the House Judiciary subcommittee he chairs investigate ACORN.

Glen Beck needs to get ahold of this one.
It's like cleaning out a house of roaches and rats. You think you're making headway in irradicating them and then another one comes to light.
The filth in this administration is disheartening.

ten megaton| 9.28.09 @ 7:51PM

I thought Obama was Acorn"s man in the White House.

Alicat| 9.28.09 @ 10:13PM

And that's an insult to roaches and rats!

HaHa

Andrew Smith| 9.29.09 @ 12:34PM

So having read the rebuttal piece in politico, how long does this incorrectlt factually piece stay up?

Timothy L. Pennell| 9.28.09 @ 7:38AM

Who IS this guy? I thought Bill Clinton was a LIAR? This America Hating, White Hating, Jew Hating President, sat right there on ABC, and told George Stephanopolous that he "Really hadn't been paying attention" to the whole ACORN thing. But he has THEIR GUY in his White House? He TAUGHT ACORN. He DEFENDED THEM in Court. These are his FREAKIN PEEPS! This guy wants to BRING THIS COUNTRY DOWN. Can't anybody see this? He embraces our ENEMIES, and gives our ALLIES the back of his hand. Khadafi wants him to stay President "forever". Of course he does. He IS Khadafi. He IS Mugabe. He's Chavez, and Castro, and Morales, and Zelaya. ESPESCIALLY Zeleya. He cuts the legs out from under the POLES and the CZECHS, to PLEASE the RUSSIANS, The same Russians who INVADED Georgia, a little while back. He BOWS to the SAUDI KING, while Kicking ISRAEL in her teeth. And he will let our troops be killed to the LAST MAN, before he'll lift a finger to get them what they NEED TO WIN, to please his Brownshirt Far Left Base. I've said it before. And I'll say it again. I can't IMAGINE him serving out the full 4 years. No way. I'm thinking....Musolini. There are just too many people out there who LOVE THIS COUNTRY with every fiber of their being. And they see a man who HATES THIS COUNTRY, and wants to TEAR IT DOWN. Do the Math.

Deborah D| 9.28.09 @ 8:21AM

Wow! In just a few words you defined the Obama administration to a T. I agree not only with your assessment, but with your passion. How far can Americans be pushed? How many are awake? And, do the left-wing want Americans pushed to the brink or do they just live in the "hate America" swamps so much that they don't know they're doing it, because left extremes seem so natural to them that normal Americans seem to be the "extremists?"

Or, are they just so politically correct that they can't see anything beyond that? Every criticism becomes racism and every policy discussion on the other side of the argument is something they cannot fathom and so must not hear because otherwise they might have to live in reality instead of the fantasy world where they dwell?

Margie| 9.28.09 @ 2:33PM

Debra D,
"Or, are they just so politically correct that they can't see anything beyond that? Every criticism becomes racism and every policy discussion on the other side of the argument is something they cannot fathom and so must not hear because otherwise they might have to live in reality instead of the fantasy world where they dwell?"

Oh my, have you got it exactly right. Nancy Pelosi is a prime example of this type of behavior, when she came out practically in tears recently saying how afraid she was of people on the right. She is seriously deranged, I believe. I think that it takes a long time for people to make themselves like that. You have to practice lying and believing lies until you reach the point where you really cannot tell the difference any longer.

Even with all of the evidence that's coming out about ACORN there will still be people praising Obama. Hopefully there will be enough people, (I pray) waking up and outraged enough to vote him out come next election. I wish we could impeach him but I know that's dreaming!

JoeJazz2000| 9.28.09 @ 3:35PM

Timothy, Deborah, and Margie: it's all the above. It's both the "Hate America" environment (think of fish, "water? What water?") and PC-ness, and a lifetime of character-forming associations. I never thought I'd see a politico that could make Bill Clinton look like an amateur, an absolute piker.

Margie| 9.28.09 @ 4:05PM

From what I have heard its gonna take at least an additional seventy million conservatives to outnumber the socialist mexicans coming here and being legalized and able to vote. That is the big elephant in the room no one seems to want to adress. When amnesty is passed its estimated that up to seventy million more scumbags will flood into this country. The mexicans are brainwashed just like the blacks about republicans. I talked to an illegal and tried to inform him on the truth and facts and when I told him I was a republican he told me i am the devil.

DUUUDDDEEE!!!

Couldn't have said it better myself, in fact no-one could have said it better!!! Obama is a charlatan-fraud and it will also be a surprise to me if he serves-out his term. Everyday something new comes to light and aren't these fellow travelers of his a real group of piss-ants... Oh yeah, lets take a trip to Copenhagen, check things out, meet the lovely wife there and I bet she sure likes her country now with all that free travel. My, aren't tax payers a wonderful perk.

dennisintn| 9.28.09 @ 6:05PM

lol, according to what i read last week, she should be downright proud. her personal staff's salaries total $l,900,000 a year. laura bush had an appointments secretary.
this administration subscribes to the "if you got it, flaunt it" theory, and it's even more extravagant when when what you're flaunting doesn't come out of your pocket.
dennisintn

Marc Jeric| 9.28.09 @ 6:05PM

Absolutely right.
1) ACORN is a system of local soviets (in Russian soviet means community organization); the only thing missing from the complete Lenin's invention are local soviets in the National Guard and the military;
2) The co-called White House advisers or czars are in fact our komissars; they are in effective charge of government departments, not the secretaries;
3) Obama, or as I call him Abu Hussein from Kenya, had only this "working" experience: a) as a community organizer; b) a lawyer for community organizers; and c) as a law instructor for future lawyers for community organizers.
He is in fact our Community Organizer-in-Chief, and the overall boss of both ACORN brownshirts and SEIU union thugs.
The ongoing indoctrination of 6-year old kids by the teacher union thugs reminds this former refugee from a communist hell of the similar indoctrination in former Yugoslavia whe we were taught to sing:
" Marshall Tito - our little violet blue,
you fight for people's rights!
Marshall Tito - our little violet white,
all the youths are for you!"
Of course, in Croatian the words scanned.

Stan| 9.29.09 @ 5:30PM

Marc,

Let's not forget to follow the power chain: Acorn and its hundreds of affiliates, SEIU, AFL-CIO, OCAW, APOLLO, TIDES Foundation, George SOROS. Last but not least all of the POLITICALLY CORRUPT CHICAGO GANG that were rewarded for their favors and money by getting jobs in the administration. These people make the Mafia look like choirboys. I hope they learn what RICO means.

Charlene Carter| 9.28.09 @ 7:44PM

Well Said this is exactly what I think of this Man...he and his Wife hate this Country and what it stands for. I sure hope do we do not have to put up with this for long...We need to take our Country Back and Fast. We will need to clean house during the 2010 elections....No mor Dems and Lifers....if they do not vote for what the people want then they are out Repubs or Dems....I want the country to get back to its Roots that our Founding Fathers put in Place and stop all of this Nonsence. I love this Country and I Love Being an American. So lets all of us stand up and fight for what is Right!!

JT| 9.29.09 @ 10:12AM

Do you even know what our founding fathers put in place? Do you know when and why it changed? Study a little. States lost power to federal government after the Civil war!!!!! I guess the old saying is true, "History always repeats itself.". The feds took power from the States to try to prevent a repeat. You guys need to focus on making a better country, not throwing out years of progress! I don't agree with all of the changes, but you have to take the good with the bad.

JT| 9.29.09 @ 10:06AM

From reading your article, you like so many other vocal conservatives, understand hate far better than love. It is sad to see such name calling and destructive criticism. I'm sure Christ would be very proud of your article.

Margie| 9.29.09 @ 1:09PM

JT~~ Your view of love is warped. Love means caring enough to tell someone the truth. Jesus IS Truth. You cannot condone a criminal and/or criminal behavior. Jesus told the Pharisees that they were of their father the Devil. That they were hypocrites, that they preferred religion rather than to acknowledge His miracles that were being done right in front of their eyes because He was doing them on the Sabbath. Just because Obama is the President doesn't mean you should honor him and respect him if he is lying to us, and out to destroy us, and turn us into a Socialist country. It is all around you. Why can't you see it?

eric| 9.30.09 @ 4:08AM

Well you couldn't be more rite. But the problem is way deeper than what we see. Most all the college professors, are preaching their left wing, anti-american garbage, to brainwash everyone under the education umbrella. So now we have Rev. Rite, with all his anti-american crap, in the White House, as commander and Chief. I guess next they will load the courts, and undo our freedom, and our Constitution. Free enterprise and the great American Spirit, got us to Super Power status. No left winger no matter how great his life is in this country, will accept just how great this country is. Look up, The free enterprise nation, "Oh my". You want believe how corrupt, and lawless our gov't has become. Now what are we as a nation going to do about our situation.

jac mills| 9.30.09 @ 2:42PM

Timothy L. Pennell, I love your passion, but please, please, get off that about the President not lasting four years in the White House -- and all that it implies. Please be constructive, not destructive. You can do more good with a reasoned, factual approach to express your views. Thank you.

Susan| 10.2.09 @ 10:59PM

I couldn't have said it any better. With all the pretend president has been doing from January '09 to October 2, 09 to destroy America, I believe we may very well see an unprecidented revolt from disolutioned Americans to restore a constitutional democratic government. We can't afford wait around until it's too late to reverse the damage "the one" has already done.

Bill Hussein O'Stalin| 9.28.09 @ 7:58AM

Obama will make sure Olympic teams are a pleasant surprise for their unwavering support!

Rob| 9.28.09 @ 8:43AM

I don't like seeing Mark Levin's face pop up when I visit your website. He attacked Glenn Beck who has done more to bring down the racist socialist than anyone else.

Jeremy Stevens| 9.28.09 @ 9:47AM

Excellent point, Rob!

And how sad, since Levin has been such an articulate and passionate voice on our side.

Well, perhaps on this Day of Atonement, the Great One will apologize so we can all keep moving.

Margie| 9.28.09 @ 2:14PM

Rob & Jeremy,
I love Mark Levin, he is fabulous. Not all that familiar with Glenn. Don't watch the telly, (t.v.), and have only heard his radio program a handful of times. In my humble opinion, I wish that the two of them would get together and talk. What I heard Mark saying on the show recently was that Glenn had suggested that John McCain would have been a worse President than McCain. I can understand the outrage.

Margie| 9.28.09 @ 2:16PM

**should have read .. a worse President than Obama.

Paul McGrath| 9.28.09 @ 5:56PM

Whether you like Levin or not, Michelle Malkin was FAR preferable to seeing his grizzled, dour mug on the website very day. They oughtta just leave Michelle on there permanently !

Tyler| 9.28.09 @ 6:40PM

Mark Levins a conservative. Hes served under Regan at the time glen smeck was throwing up. The only reason he attacks beck is because beck always says there no difference between republicans and democrats. Thats an idiotic statement. I don't know how the heck he gets away with it so much. Beck doesn't have any solutions Levin does.

What's this, you diss our Bro the Prez and mention Karl Rove while doing so? Calling all Liberals! Repeat after me KKKarl! KKKarl! KKKarl!

Julie| 9.28.09 @ 6:01PM

Nice try, Ray; but it was you demoncraps who started the KKK and perpetrated all those lynchings of poor black folks. In fact, your Senator Robert Byrd was a KKK leader years ago.

I'd try to forget those ugly democrat memories, too, if I were you.

JT| 9.29.09 @ 10:21AM

Actually Julie, the Democrats actually started states rights. Lincoln, a republicant, ended states rights!!!!! Now, go ahead and vote Republican again, just like mom and dad taught you. Why not discuss D. Cheney ties to Haliburton, or the fact his wife sat on the board at Lockheed?

Margie| 9.29.09 @ 12:55PM

Hey JT~There still are State's right's. Guess YOUR Mommy & Daddy didn't teach you, Mr. Condecending Liberal. It's called the Constitution of the United States. It's called the 10th Amendment. "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people." And by the way~ Thomas Jefferson's Party at the time were called the Democratic Republicans. And Andrew Jackson founded the modern Democrat Party and centralized the government. ..guess you got some studying to do.

victor| 9.29.09 @ 1:42AM

Hey ray, you need to go back to reconstruction and ask why DEMOCRATS started the KKK and Jim Crow.

crazyloon| 9.28.09 @ 10:27AM

Don't agree with the caps but I understand the passion. The 'only' defense will be the 2010 elections so it would be very important to start spreading the word to get to work on this issue and this issue alone at this time. Read the left's playbook and organize, organize, orgainize. There is a practical step we all can take and this is it. So I can only agree with VOTE THESE CROOKS OUT!

tim| 9.28.09 @ 10:31AM

I'm Shocked Shocked!!

That political corruption is running rampant in the Obama White House.....

Road to the White House.....Chicago style..

Read Sal Alinsky "Rules for Radicals"
Get Gov to fund Acorn
Use Acorn as the front organization to where all other corrupt organization can funnel their dirty money.

Buy off and out right steal the 2008 election using millions of fraudulent votes in key battle ground States---enough to defeat Clinton and then the horse whipped McCain.

Use a very polished "Black" man as the front guy so that whites will be shamed into voting for him regardless of the obvious corruption all around him and his ilk.

Try to keep this party going until you can dismantle the rest of the civilian rights.

Then Came O'keefe..........

He and his partner may have very well just saved the Republic from the brink of corrupt socialist rule!

This was all too close for comfort and the sleeping majority better realize just how close the USA just came to being done in as a free Democtratic Republic!

Margie| 9.28.09 @ 2:51PM

Tim,
"Use a very polished "Black" man as the front guy so that whites will be shamed into voting for him regardless of the obvious corruption all around him and his ilk."

I haven't read Alinsky's book, but if that is indeed in it I have to say it failed miserably.

Most decent Americans don't look at Obama as a black man, Nor do I. I see him as a man who is fully set to do evil. His actions prove it every day. He lies to us about his policies and treats us like enemies because we disagree with them. We disagree with them because they are WRONG! This isn't the Soviet Union and we are not under his thumb. We are a free people and want to stay that way. Apparently, that doesn't concern him. And he has no plans on stopping. He reminds me of this from the Bible: "Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the son of man is fully set to do evil. Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him. But it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God. (Ecclesiastes 8:11-13)

Margie| 9.28.09 @ 2:56PM

**I haven't read Alinsky's book, but if that is indeed in it I have to say it failed miserably.

I should have added. OK it worked in so far as getting him elected, perhaps. But because it was deceit and not based on truth, alot of people are waking up to the real man and what he is made of, and they don't like it. They are finding out that CHARM does not a good man make.

Joyce| 9.28.09 @ 10:35AM

I have long thought that Obama was the "front man" and others are controlling the moves behind the scene. Obama has surrounded himself with radicals who will try to destroy America if they are not stopped. Gaspard is just the latest to be outed. Obama is slicker than slick willie when it comes to presenting a facade to the voters. I am so sick of hearing about his persona, "he's such a nice looking and nice sounding young man". I am sick of hearing about what an eloquent speaker he is. Oh, yes, if you want to be sold a pig in a poke, he's your man. In nine months the folks who are pulling his strings have taken us down roads that would have been unheard of two years ago. And they will take us farther down that road unless they are stopped. It appears to me that the president lies every time he opens his mouth and he tells everyone anything he thinks they want to hear. How anyone with a speck of intelligence can support him is beyond me. He is an embarrassment to the United States and it showed so plainly last week at the UN.

David Gonzalez| 9.28.09 @ 10:48AM

O'Keefe's partner is Hannah Giles (JY-uls). Name sound familiar? That's right---she's the eldest daughter of Townhall.com columnist Doug Giles!

Richard| 9.28.09 @ 11:02AM

so what?

Margie| 9.28.09 @ 2:59PM

David Gonzalez,
This means nothing. My own Dad is a life long Democrat, as is my entire family! I am a Reagan conservative. We all have our own minds. Some of us choose reality over fantasy.

It seems the 'progressive movement' miscalculated the 2008 election results, not realizing it was only an "American Idol" vote, not a mandate. Patriotic Giants are awakening. Always a great thing!

Obama is a piece of garbage, lying sack of crap who cares only about pushing his agenda---which is NOT what is good for this country. I'm sick of ACORN, I'm sick of my taxes going to drug-injecting baby-producing tax credit mothers that refuse to get off their butt and get a job. I'm tired of my money going to those who are lazy and think society owes them something, yet they won't be a productive citizen. The system should be there to help those that truly need it and will apply themselves---not to those that refuse to anything. YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO ANYTHING UNLESS YOU WORK FOR IT! GIVE THEM THE WEALTH? HOW ABOUT GIVE THEM A RESPONSIBILITY---and see what they do with it!

Margie| 9.28.09 @ 1:59PM

We knew that for sure, Oldefarte! LOL.

Mad Monica| 9.28.09 @ 5:28PM

Any other time, any other president (especially one with an R behind their name) and the articles of impeachment would already be in the works. The left and the media are going to avoid covering this story all they can because they know the trail of scum and dirt tied to this issue leads right up Pennsylvania Avenue and into the lap of their president.

Bydand76| 9.28.09 @ 6:27PM

Does anyone else find it ironic that the supposed Commander In Chief apparently does not care about the current situation is Afghanistan enough that he only has talked to the top Commander there once? This is an appalling breach of trust of all service members who are currently deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Now the revelations that ACORN/SEIU is more in bed with the White House than previously thought should be raising everyones proverbial red flag! Not to mention the myriad other examples of the American hating agenda propogated by this cuurent crop of leftist's who are running our Republic into the dirt.
The stink of corruption, cronyism, and arrogant self-righteousness emanating from this administration is becoming overwhelming.
When will enough be enough? The progressive, socialist, green, liberal left is mobilized to retain their grip on power.
If the previous election was rigged then what will happen for the upcoming elections?

Bydand76| 9.28.09 @ 10:20PM

Is this a joke?

You cant be serious here. 10% of govt. $$$ to = 2000 + houses?
Ok??? So lets do the math..........
What is the average cost of the home built in post Katrina, or the average cost of the home being built by the corrupt ACORN?
What is ACORN's overall receipt of govt funds earmarked for housing projects?
Is this money specifically set aside for the housing project? Is it subsidized by the taxpayers?

I find this very hard to believe.......... I suspect my computers leg is being pulled here.

Union Official Allegedly Liaison Between Governor, Obama Team
Blagojevich Apparently Hoped for Job Leading Labor Group

By Alec MacGillis
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, December 10, 2008; A08

Among the revelations contained in the complaint brought against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich yesterday was the description of an official with the Service Employees International Union acting as an apparent intermediary between the governor and Barack Obama's camp in discussions over Obama's Senate seat.

The alleged role of the SEIU official was surprising, given that the union had not figured publicly in the investigation into Blagojevich (D). But on another level, the SEIU's apparent involvement is an indication of the extent to which it has, under the leadership of its ambitious and controversial president, Andrew L. Stern, become an omnipresent force in Democratic politics.

With organized labor holding such high expectations for the Obama administration -- notably, hopes for legislation fiercely opposed by business leaders that would make it easier to form unions -- officials of other unions were hoping yesterday that the SEIU's apparent involvement in the Illinois scandal would not undermine their cause in Washington.

The U.S. attorney's complaint states that Blagojevich mused aloud with his advisers about the possibility that he could seek a high-paying job with Change to Win, the coalition of seven unions -- dominated by SEIU -- that broke away from the AFL-CIO in 2005. Blagojevich and his chief of staff wondered aloud about a "three-way deal" in which he would appoint Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett, a Chicago businesswoman believed to be the woman identified in the complaint as "Candidate 1," to Obama's Senate seat; Blagojevich in return would become Change to Win's executive director; and Obama would reward Change to Win with pro-labor policies.

The complaint also states that on Nov. 12, Blagojevich spoke by phone with an "SEIU official" who was in Washington and with whom Blagojevich had met a week before on the understanding that the official was an emissary to discuss Jarrett's interest in the Senate seat. In the conversation, the SEIU official is alleged to have said that Obama now wanted Blagojevich to consider candidates other than Jarrett.

Apparently undeterred, Blagojevich allegedly suggested that SEIU could assist in the formation of a nonprofit political organization that could employ Blagojevich while also assisting Jarrett. The SEIU official agreed to "put that flag up and see where it goes."

SEIU leaders, who were gathered yesterday at a Denver hotel to discuss the "card-check" legislation that would make it easier to form unions, declined to comment yesterday, saying through a spokeswoman, "We have no reason to believe that SEIU or any SEIU official was involved in any wrongdoing."

A spokesman for Change to Win said: "No one connected with Change to Win ever considered, discussed or promised any position at Change to Win to Governor Blagojevich, his staff or his advisers. In the affidavit released by the United States Attorney, a position at Change to Win is discussed only in conversations between the governor and his advisers."

The complaint's wording suggests that the SEIU official who allegedly talked with Blagojevich was Stern, because it quotes the governor's chief of staff as saying the official "could make" the governor the head of Change to Win, a level of authority that only Stern holds over the coalition. But the SEIU official with the closest ties to the Obama team is Tom Balanoff, head of SEIU's Illinois chapter. A labor source who was not authorized to speak publicly said that although Balanoff had planned to be in Denver, he was not at the meeting yesterday.

SEIU officials did not return repeated calls yesterday.

Stern has emerged as a central player in the labor movement by pressing aggressively to expand union rolls, along the way irritating AFL-CIO leaders, whom he accused of being complacent, and leaders of some SEIU chapters who accuse him of cutting deals with business and government that enhance his profile while undercutting local chapters. Among his victories was Blagojevich's decision to let SEIU, and not the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, organize Illinois' child-care workers.

Stern resisted attempts by some SEIU chapters to endorse Obama early in the primaries, because Stern also liked former North Carolina senator John Edwards and hoped to preserve the union's resources for the general election. But Stern went along with a full endorsement in February, and the union invested heavily in the general election -- though it probably played less of a role in key Rust Belt states than the AFL-CIO did. A former SEIU official, Patrick Gaspard, was named Obama's political director.

Richard Hurd, a professor of labor relations at Cornell University, said it was doubtful SEIU would have conspired with Blagojevich, because it knew how relatively weak his ties to Obama were and because it was doubtful that Change to Win would hire him.

"They don't just create high-paying jobs like that. It doesn't even make sense. It sounds like someone's pipe dream."

But, depending on what else emerges in Illinois, SEIU's role could affect labor's agenda, he said: "If there turns out to be a connection with SEIU, it's not going to be a great thing for labor."

e.m. mason| 10.1.09 @ 10:53AM

For many months I've been trying really hard to embrace a conservative outlook. I won't bother anyone with the details. I've tried to find an intelligent source. I thought The Americam Spectator might be it. But now I found out that Matthew Vadum was wrong when he said Patrick Gaspard was employed by acorn. Wade Rathke admitted in a statement to politifact.com that he was wrong, Gaspard never worked for acorn and he apoligized for that mistake. Will Vadum, Beck, and Hannity do the same? I'm not defending any Democrats. I expect polititians on both sides to lie. But writers and commentators, especially ones whose vocation is to spread the real truth should be sure that what they're saying is the real truth. Unfortunately, I'm having a lot of trouble with conservatives on this point. From the many, many comments I've read on many, many conservative websites, it doesn't seem like many of those people read or listen to anything unless it already meets their mind set. And if Glenn Beck says something, they believe it without even a pause to look up his sources. That's disturbing to me. As I said, I'm trying to find a place for myself in the conservative network, but when I keep coming across comments that aren't true and not corrected, how am I supposed to feel about it the whole movement? The liberal websites are full of name calling posts as much as the conservative ones. Each side keeps questioning the others' love for our country. Of course we all love the U.S. Those who don't have either left or are planning to. Spreading lies defeats any purpose of keeping our country whole. If conservatives want to be taken seriously they need to be serious.

TownTalk| 10.1.09 @ 7:07PM

When will the American Spectator retract the misinformation in this article?

Gaspard, in fact, never worked for ACORN.

Seized Up!| 10.9.09 @ 10:49AM

I am sick of the looney left folks in this administration telling us real folk how to live our lives! America is not a socialist commie pinko country. If you think George Bush sold us out to his rich country club friends, then you ain't seen nothin yet in this here Harvard Obamaism administration! We are the land of the free and brave - and Obama and his thugs had better rember it.
Every time we point out the lies and corruption of Obama, they say we're racist - as if that's the worst you can say about a person. I think its worse to be a socialist or a commie Nazi thug than a racist! Let t he Free Market solve our problems - not the evil money changers in the White House with their Czars and their socialist presceiptions. No more handouts! No more social security! No more medicare! This is America, not Russia!

William W. Wexler| 10.19.09 @ 9:10AM

Actually, Wade Rathke made a mistake when he said Gaspard worked for ACORN. Gaspard was not an ACORN staffer.

Rathke retracted the mistake, and you ought to read the retraction because what he has to say about McCarthyite liars like you would shame anyone who has a shred of common decency in them.

The funny thing is that Glenn Beck, serial liar and delusional ADDD dry drunk, is putting $18 million a year in the bank making this stuff up and you right wing fools can't tell who's telling the truth.

Oh, and by the way, did Glenn tell you that he's a Mormon, a member of a secretive polytheistic cult that believes that it has living prophets on earth right now? A group that lets everyone believe that it is "Christian" but only uses the Bible at Christmas and Easter?

Google for Cleon Skousen if you want to know the truth about Glenn Beck. That is, if you're not afraid to know it.

This past 9 months has been like waking up in the Twilight Zone every single day. Alion| 11.19.09 @ 1:27AM

It's a pity for you lot that this whole thing is based on a lie innit?
I quote Robert Rathke.
"Patrick was never on the staff of ACORN," Rathke wrote. "I double checked with people I still know there, and it appears that I dropped a stitch there. Hopefully my misstatement won’t lead to the White House throwing him in front of the bus in this rush to neo-McCarthyism that has become so prominent. In this case, my memory tricked me. I’m glad to carry the weight and simply say I made a mistake, and damned if I’m not sorry and hope no damage is done to a good man doing a hard job."
...and Fox 'news' ran with this story because it suits their current political agenda. People don't let your narrow views blind you.

JAVSnyc| 3.2.10 @ 9:45AM

In his budget, Governor Paterson proposed a number of new taxes, the closure of facilities and other measures to suit a political agenda. With the end of his tenure well within sight, what is to come of these initiatives and the outside agencies that support them?

It is hard to believe that the Service Employee International Union (SEIU) 1199 will simply allow the two million dollars investment in the soda tax simply fall to the wayside. We know whom the SEIU had in their pocket. And how that black-handed, double-dealing agent worked out for them.

So who will be the new face of the SEIU’s regressive policy for New York? What politician would be willing to back a union in their money grab from hardworking middle and lower classes of New York?

SEIU should take care of involving itself in politics. Back in 2003, the SEIU chastised AFL-CIO for being overly involved elections. Now in 2010, it is hypocritical that they should be involved in a campaign to burden New Yorkers with a new tax. The SEIU is backing a tax on the middle and lower class, the very same janitors, elevator operators and window washers who formed the union back in 1921.
