ACORN in Retreat

While ACORN retreats across the nation, an upcoming voter registration fraud trial may reveal embarrassing information that hinders the ability of the embattled radical activist group to function.

The testimony will come as soon as next month from former ACORN Las Vegas field director Christopher Edwards. Charged with election fraud by Nevada's Democratic attorney general, he cut a deal last week with prosecutors and has pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit the crime of compensation for registration of voters.

ACORN allegedly enforced voter registration quotas with its employees and offered bonuses for extra registrations. Nevada law forbids the use of such incentives on the theory it encourages canvassers to file fraudulent registrations. No wonder: ACORN registers "Mickey Mouse" and various celebrities, out-of-state residents, and dead people, every election cycle.

As part of the plea deal, Edwards, whom state investigators consider to be the mastermind of the incentive program, has agreed to testify against former regional director, Amy Busefink, and against ACORN, which is a co-defendant. The Las Vegas Sun reported that Edwards acknowledged he conspired with Busefink and ACORN to create the "Blackjack" incentive program that gave canvassers an extra $5 for submitting 21 or more registration cards each day. The daily quota was allegedly 20 forms.

If ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) happens to be convicted, it could have its status as a nonprofit corporation revoked in Nevada, which could make it very difficult for the ACORN network to operate in that key battleground state.

Such a conviction would send shock waves through leftist organizing circles across the nation and might embolden more prosecutors to take on ACORN. Until it was charged by Nevada this year, ACORN had boasted about its ability to duck prosecution for election fraud.

Amy Schur, a senior ACORN official who has been in charge of the group's national campaigns, is likely to testify in the Nevada case, said Karen Inman of St. Paul, Minnesota, a former member of ACORN's national board.

Schur's testimony might be devastating to ACORN because it could publicly air many of the group's skeletons, suggested Inman, a lawyer by training.

That's because Schur has intimate knowledge of how ACORN operates and was one member of a group within ACORN including then-chief organizer and founder Wade Rathke that covered up a nearly $1 million embezzlement by Rathke's brother, Inman said. Wade Rathke was fired by the board last summer and ordered to sever all ties with ACORN. He has failed to do so. He is still, for example, chief organizer of SEIU Local 100 in New Orleans, an ACORN affiliate he founded.

Inman herself was ousted from the national board by management last fall after she asked too many questions about the embezzlement. Now she's one of the leaders of the "ACORN 8," a group of former ACORN members trying to reform ACORN.

Inman also made the point that ACORN is in turmoil throughout America.

Liz Wolf of Citizens Consulting Inc. (CCI), the shadowy financial nerve center of the ACORN network, has been negotiating with tax collectors on behalf of ACORN to have interest on its tax debts waived and to have some of the debts partially forgiven, Inman said.

CCI alone owes at least $400,000 in back taxes to the IRS, various states, and the District of Columbia. Collectively, the many affiliates within the ACORN network owe millions of dollars to tax authorities. The tax debts remain even after ACORN took a controversial payment from a developer in exchange for the group's support for a sports stadium and mixed-use complex in Brooklyn.

Experts say the taxes owed are probably employment taxes, the same taxes used to support the Big Government programs that ACORN is so enamored of. Always resourceful, ACORN is using its massive tax liabilities to cry poor and beg funders for more money.

According to Inman, so far this year ACORN has closed many of its offices nationwide. Offices in Ohio (Dayton and Columbus), Michigan (Grand Rapids), and Texas have closed their doors. The offices in Oakland, California, and in her hometown of St. Paul are barely operating, she said.

So the Brownshirts are tax evaders? With an example like the Tax Czar -- also a tax evader -- what else would you expect?

The shine is coming off despite the foot-dragging of the MSM. Well, gallows humour may be better than no humour at all.

My opine:
1. Insert Soros OSI's Liasion offices, Funders accounts, and Soros Operatives list for all of the above "ACORN" and you have a mirror image of corruption.
2. ACORN will be set back, but the actual prosecution comes out of the OBNA Judicial Offices, which will NOT prosecute. Delay, Ignore and eventually bless the ACORN operations.
3. OSI, Soros, ACORN, ACLU, SEIU, typically Chicago style thuggery. NOTE: THE IRS now has some obligation to investigate. What we need here is an" Untouchables Team".
Anyone willing to volunteer.?

ACORN (or whatever they call themselves now) won't have to worry about investigations or prosecutions in the blue states. The Democrats in control will not do anything because doing so would mean that they would be exposed as helping with voter fraud.

This is a warning about the coming elections. You think that voter fraud, false registrations and the like were bad the last time...Just be prepared for the wholesale voter fraud in the next elections.

At the present time, there is no way to prevent this as all the blue states will assure that democrats are elected. Come the Presidential election it will be the same.

ACORN operatives need to be caught on film blocking election poling areas, fraudulantly filing voter registration cards and bullying Americans. Evil will never withstand the light of day. Organized better than you...| 8.26.09 @ 1:08PM

Hello Folks,

Just thought I'd add my two cents... ACORN has not committed voter fraud. I several hundred cases around the country that I saw first hand- it was the local board of elections that inserted known bad cards in the VR (voter registration) batches. I personally handed over boxes in PA, NJ, and other states to local officials identifying cards that could not be verified after several attempts to contact said registrant. Not one soul registered and voted as "Micky Mouse"- that is more messaging that lazy folks like to eat up and re-message. Remember WMD's? Secondly the get out the vote efforts. Help turnout of Americans to vote which sadly and ungodly number Americans don't vote.. How un-American. The Census is done by several organizations across the country besides ACORN, and the federal government funds them all. ACORN was funded by both Bush administrations due to the high accuracy rate of ID'ing valid addresses. Lastly I will say that ACORN had several employees beholden to interests outside of the ACORN mission and bylaws. Power to the people, and the people shall rule- Unfortunately some of ACORN leadership mainly it's former chief organizer Wade Rathke and a handful of insiders did what they thought was best for those they were helping to organize. This ultimately led to a collapse- You help your members fight their fight not your own, you organize to win based on mutual self interest, not for the benifit of a few ideologues.

let's start looking at the real problem- disinformation and the lack of critical thinking!

Bebbette| 8.26.09 @ 1:50PM

ACORN is nothing but a thug org & should be obliterated from existence. They have no right to one more dime of taxpayers money. They are accused of embezzlement, corruption, $ laundering & voter fraud. That should take away any tax exempt status & free $ from the govt. They are now in NJ trying to do away w/2nd amendment, while Obama & Van Jones are creating AmeriCorp, civil troops, that according to Obama will be funded as well, if not, better that the military & will have military training. Communist Van Jones is overseeing them, community orgs & unions. Obama has given them a provision in HR 3200, which they are exempt from, but will benefit from our $ with payoff of their underfunded subsidized plans for their retirees & families. Did he forget to mention that?
An event organizer told the Birmingham News,"We are looking for supporters for Obama's HC, education & energy policies. We're are not looking for a fight. That will come later, when we have an army." We must rise to defeat this objective. This agenda needs to be exposed & Obama impeached for crimes against our country.

So Democrats try to get more minorities to vote and Republicans try to suppress that vote. In fact, there was a book written about Republican suppression tactics by a Republican operative. This is why more and more people are becoming independents -- both parties are corrupt and the professional politicians interest is only to get reelected. Both sides will say anything to get elected. We need term limits and citizen representatives and election reform on both sides.

Scientific American's Dishonest Attack
On 911Research

The editors of Scientific American followed in the footsteps of Popular Mechanics in exploiting a trusted brand in order to protect the perpetrators of the mass murder of 9/11/01. The column by Michael Shermer in the June, 2005 issue of Scientific American, titled Fahrenheit 2777, is an attempt to deceive the magazine's readers into dismissing the overwhelming evidence that 9/11 was an inside job without ever looking at that evidence. More specifically, Shermer attempts to inoculate readers against looking at the decidedly scientific refutation of the official story found on our website, 911Research, with a cluster of disinformation techniques including:

Attributing to 911Research an obscure and unrepresentative statement that steel has a melting point of 2,777ºF
Falsely implying that 911Research embraces a straw-man argument that the official account of the Twin Towers' collapses depends on the fires having melted steel.
Contextualizing 911Research as nonsense by surrounding its mention with absurd claims, and racist ideas.
Although the column aims to marginalize the 9/11 Truth Movement generally (without ever acknowledging it by name), mentioning the books Inside Job, The New Pearl Harbor, and 9/11: The Great Illusion, it appears to be aimed primarily at 911Research for several reasons:
It is one of only two sites Shermer mentions.
It's the source of his 2,777 figure.
It's the target of his mis-attribution of the straw man claim about melted steel.
Its most persuasively argued claim -- that the Towers were destroyed through controlled demolition -- is the only point Shermer attempts to debunk.

The Cryptic Origin of 2,777 Degrees Farenheit
Just after mentioning "creationism, Holocaust denial and the various crank theories of physics," Shermer states:

[A]ccording to www.911research.wtc7.net, steel melts at a temperature of 2,777 degrees Fahrenheit, but jet fuel burns at only 1,517 degrees F. No melted steel, no collapsed towers.
In fact, 911Research has never contained the figure 2,777 degrees Fahrenheit. What 911Research does contain is passages like the following:

1535ºC (2795ºF) - melting point of iron
~1510ºC (2750ºF) - melting point of typical structural steel
~825ºC (1517ºF) - maximum temperature of hydrocarbon fires burning in the atmosphere without pressurization or pre-heating (premixed fuel and air - blue flame)
(See The Killer Fires Theory is Pure Fantasy.)

Unable to locate the source of Shermer's figure of of 2,777ºF in the over 500 pages of original material on the 911Research website, I accused him of lying. Previous versions of my essay noted:

Shermer's attribution of 2,777ºF appears calculated to discredit the site in the eyes of the casual reader. Even the reader who doesn't know that steel does not have a single melting point (since steel is a[n] alloy whose melting point depends on its composition) is likely to conclude that 911Research chose 2,777 for numerological reasons and ignores physics, and will be very unlikely to type in the unnecessarily long URL www.911research.wtc7.net .

In correspondence dated 7/11/05, Shermer revealed the source of his 2,777ºF. He pointed out that a page containing a transcript for my slide presentation The Twin Towers Demolition contained the figure 1525 Celsius, whose Fahrenheit equivalent is 2777. This number was a typo, since the temperature it referred to was the melting point of iron, 1535ºC. The number 1525 appeared only two sentences after a link to the corresponding slide, which listed both 1535ºC, and its equivalent 2795ºF -- not 1525ºC, which appeared nowhere on the site outside of the typo on the obscure transcript page. Nonetheless, my earlier characterization of Shermer's statement as a "bold-faced lie" is unwarranted, and I apologize for my error.

Shermer's Melted Steel Straw Man
In the above excerpt, Shermer implies that our argument for demolition is that the fires could not have melted the steel. In fact, 911Research nowhere embraces the claim that the melting of the structural steel was a prerequisite for a gravity collapse of the towers. What we do is debunk the claim made by apologists of the official story that the fires melted the steel. This claim appeared in several places, including an article in Scientific American itself, in which M.I.T. professor of civil and environmental engineering Eduardo Kausel states:

I believe that the intense heat softened or melted the structural elements--floor trusses and columns--so that they became like chewing gum, and that was enough to trigger the collapse.

The fire-melts-steel idea was also endorsed by structural engineer Chris Wise, who was quoted by the BBC as stating:

It was the fire that killed the buildings. There's nothing on earth that could survive those temperatures with that amount of fuel burning. The columns would have melted, the floors would have melted and eventually they would have collapsed one on top of each other.
In the article that quoted Wise and in other articles, the BBC ran the graphic to the right, which asserts that fires of 800ºC were "hot enough to melt steel floor supports."

For more information on claims by "experts" that air-aspirated hydrocarbon-fueled open fires can melt steel, see:

"Experts" claim fires melted the towers' structures
The Killer Fires theory

In the transcript mentioned above, the paragraph immediately following the source of Shermer's 2,777ºF debunks the column failure theory. Subsequent paragraphs debunk the truss failure theory. Thus it is difficult to imagine that Shermer's false attribution of the melted steel straw man argument to 911Research was accidental.

Shermer Parrots Debunked Fantasies

Following his misrepresentation of 911Research, Shermer gives a short narrative of the truss failure theory, featuring M.I.T. Materials Science Professor Thomas Eagar, who gave us the zipper and domino theory. Shermer cites Eagar's article in the Journal of the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society, failing to mention that 911Research had long ago debunked that same article. Shermer, not one for facts, exaggerates the article's already fantastic claims, stating that "rugs, curtains, furniture and paper" ignited by the jet fuel "raising temperatures above 1,400 degrees F and spreading the inferno throughout each building." Compare Shermer's description of the "inferno throughout each building" to the photo on the right showing the South Tower moments before its collapse.

The claim that the Twin Towers were destroyed by controlled demolition is the only one that Shermer attacks, which he does with the following rendition of the zipper and domino theory:

Temperature differentials of hundreds of degrees across single steel horizontal trusses caused them to sag--straining and then breaking the angle clips that held the beams to the vertical columns. Once one truss failed, others followed. When one floor collapsed onto the next floor below, that floor subsequently gave way, creating a pancaking effect that triggered each 500,000-ton structure to crumble.
