This morning, at least one news organization and one citizen
advocacy group was mulling filing a Freedom of Information Act
request seeking the release of the manifest for the Air Force One
New York flyover to determine if any Obama donors or other
interested parties were on board the flight.
The suspicion that civilians — or a high-ranking White House
official — may have been on the flight is the result, in part,
of the involvement of Louis Caldera,
the Obama Administration’s director of the White House Military
Office, who authorized the New York City flyover, and who was
brought into the administration, say Obama donors and transition
team members, for his understanding of the Pentagon’s
inner-workings, his relationship with high-powered donors with
backgrounds in the defense industry, and his ties to both
Bill and Hillary Clinton and New Mexico governor
Bill Richardson.
“He’s a fixer in the classic sense of the term, and I wouldn’t be
surprised if there is more to the flyover story than we know,”
says one former Obama defense transition team member. “He would
not have been my first choice to put in that position given his
background, but it wasn’t my decision. The fact that he is in
that position raises questions of judgment on the part of [chief
of staff Rahm] Emanuel, I
think.”
Caldera served for two years as Bill Clinton’s Secretary of the
Army, and back then was tasked, according to former Clinton
insiders, with identifying “politically friendly” military
personnel who would be helpful to the Clintons, as well as
interacting with VIPs from Hollywood and the defense industry to
keep them happy. During Caldera’s tenure at the Pentagon, his
choice to serve as deputy inspector general, Maj. Gen.
Larry G. Smith, was scuttled after it was
revealed that an alleged sexual harassment complaint against him
had been removed from his personnel record.
Caldera, who served in the California state assembly, also served
as a vice chancellor of the California state university system.
It was this background that allowed Gov. Bill Richardson to press
for Caldera to be brought on as the president of the University
of New Mexico. Caldera was not considered a top tier candidate
for that post until Richardson’s staff inserted a job requirement
that the president be required to have a top security clearance.
According to former Clinton administration sources, that job
requirement almost ensured the only qualified candidate would be
Richardson’s friend, Caldera. Almost 80 percent of the faculty of
University of New Mexico voted against the hiring of Caldera, but
Richardson and the school’s board of regents overruled the
faculty’s input.
Caldera’s controversial background doesn’t end there. In 2002,
Caldera was placed on the board of IndyMac, before its failure
and placement in receivership due to its poor capitalization as a
result of poor mortgage investments, IndyMac Bank was the largest
savings and loan in Southern California and seventh largest
mortgage originator in the United States.
According to White House sources, while Caldera has apologized,
and Rahm Emanuel’s office has launched an “investigation” into
the use of Air Force One for publicity purposes and a low
flyover, the investigation’s instigation began in the White House
Counsel’s Office, run by Gregory Craig.
The White House is already on record as saying that only Air
Force personnel were on Air Force One. Yesterday, White House
spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters: “I’m told
that — keep in mind this was a — this was two training missions
that, in the end, became a picture mission, which the President
having quite clearly called today a mistake and one that he will
ensure doesn’t happen again. Because this was a training mission,
the only people on that plane were Air Force personnel.”
But there are suspicions there is more to it. “This is a bigger
deal than the White House is letting on, and there are some
nervous people there, and I’m not clear why,” says the former
transition team member. “If I were still advising them, I’d say
live up to the transparency pledge and release all the documents.
But from the get-go, this was a top secret operation, which
raises a whole bunch of red flags.”

Read Clarice Feldman's "Fly By Farce Theory" in American Thinker:
"JOM poster Mustang has a plausible theory on the fly-by over Manhattan yesterday: that it was to aid in the production of a film Red Tail about the Tuskegee Airman called Red Tail. Tom Maguire details it:..."
It's not terribly far fetched, considering George Lucas' contributions:

I find it odd. Obama disses the CEO's for using their planes and wasting money. Now he pulls the same stunt and I wonder who in the heck is going to pay this 300.000+ stunt
sinanju| 4.29.09 @ 12:38PM
I'm with Kitty on this one. The photos from the ground clearly show the distinctive red tail of the 187th Fighter Group of the Alabama Air National Guard, the spiritual heirs of the 99th Fighter Squadron. George Lucas has given generously to all the right people over the years and a shot of the descendants of the Tuskeegee Airman proudly escorting a black president against the backdrop of Manhattan would make a stirring clip to be played for the closing credits.
I can't wait to watch as this unfolds and the facts are pried out one-by-one. It's the small but indicative scandals like this that really resonate with us peasants.

Apropos of Air Force One. Does anyone remember Bill Clinton's infamous haircut? Not so much for the Beverly hairstylist's fee but the fact that it took place on Air Force One while tying up a major runway at LAX for over an hour. Sooner or later, Obama's soaring rhetoric will no longer be able to be squared with his squalid actions in the adoring public's mind.
Dave Matthews, your opinion please?
KyMouse| 4.29.09 @ 12:52PM
If I understand this correctly, AF1 was wheeling low over Manhattan for some minutes. In my city, large aircraft that are approaching or departing from the main airport -- in other words, are low -- aren't usually allowed to fly over downtown, in case something goes terribly wrong and the aircraft crashes into a high concentration of people. Seems to me that flying a plane that big around Manhattan for a while risked such a catastrophe.
Danielle| 4.29.09 @ 1:12PM
Looks like we have one more thing to add to his list of indiscretions. I found this video with a lot of info on the flyover- http://www.newsy.com/videos/flyover_triggers_9_11_flashback/- and I thought the quotes from people calling for his resignation were really appropriate. Who would make such a stupid decision? He embarrassed the White House with this one.

In due time, some one will talk. Its not a matter of if but when. My question is when will the "O" people re-brand the planes? They are all about the branding and marketing of things and its been a while since Jackie put her stamp on it.
The statement will be along the lines that the U.S. is too flashy and intimidating, its time to "remake" the image.

Somebody needs to file an FOI complaint because the MSM is not interested. If this was Bush, the WHPC would have raked the chubby pinanata, Scott McClellen, so over the coals until all names of passengers were released. Oh, and of course, Henry Swine flu Waxman would be holding hearings.

People, I'm an Air Force pilot. I've flown 747s. I've done mid-air refueling in support of presidential visits. Trust me, while this photo op wasn't cheap, it is absolute peanuts compared to the cost of any president's trips overseas, or even here in the States. Iconic images, and even great art doesn't come cheap. Let's face it, Air Force One flying low over the Statue of Liberty is an iconic image. They might have wanted one that doesn't have the World Trade Center in the background. Just as a supposition.
Regarding the danger to the general population, trust me, AF1 is probably the best maintained jet on the planet. All due dilligence would have been taken to ensure no conflicts with other traffic in the area. Finally, the jet would have been a minimum of 2000' above the water for the flyby. If they had lost all their engines to some freak flock of birds (vastly less likely, given the greater size and reliability vs those of that recent US Airways ditching) they could still have glided about 6 miles from that height, enough to pick your ditching location, perhaps even land at La Guardia.
Finally, I hope that the plane was filled with people. Hopefully the airmen of Andrews AFB were allowed a once in a lifetime chance to fly on a high flying piece of history. But it was probably a bunch of damn Obama donors...

Shortly before the 747 flyover, a civilian AC got lost and violated DC airspace causing some serious responses in Congress and the WH. Since these two 747s are the main means to evacuate the POTUS in case of a terrorist-sorry can't use that term-man made disaster in the making, would not the WH not know where the evac -aircraft are at ALL TIMES? Location, availability, maintenance schedule, etc? I hope this enitre fiasco unravels and we get the facts. Mr. Ross, Aircraft recognition capability might not have been the first thought of those on the ground peering upward toward an oncoming airliner. The F-16s, to those on the ground, might have been (a) providing escort or (b) prepared to shoot it down.

Following my personal guide of believing nothing I hear and only twenty five percent of what I see, and being by nature suspicious, it occurs to me that this was a carefully disguised test of the New York response system, which failed miserbly. If I believe reports, the FAA knew about the flight; a flight plan was filed; supposedly New york City's Emergency Management Center was asleep at the switch. I also wonder at the speed at shich nes of the flight spread: are we to believe all the workers in New York are glued to windows searching for Armageddon II, rather than being gainfully employed? Some how the "news" of the flyover spread like wildfire. To me, this is the critical piece of data.

There are several things that don't make sense about this. 1) If you need pictures of Air Force One, why would you take them from a single-seat F-16? Did they find a pilot who was also a pro photographer and who could fly with one hand and hold the camera with the other? 2) Why was the F-16 behind the other plane in all the footage I saw? Wouldn't you want pictures from the side or the front?

The White House is lying about why this flyover happened. It was to get a photo of Air Force One with an F-16 with a red tail (commemorating the Tuskegee Airmen). The F-16 was from the 187th Fighter Wing Alabama Air National Guard. The following link is for the 187th http://www.almont.ang.af.mil/ As you will notice, there is a picture of the WWII P-51 Mustang (with a red tail) and a 187th F-16 with a red tail. Just like the one that flew over NY City. It all has to do with African-American flyers in WWII and our first African-American president.
Here is some background on the Tuskegee Airmen.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuskegee_airmen
From the Wikipedia article on the Tuskegee airmen:
On December 9, 2008, the remaining Tuskegee Airmen were invited to attend the inauguration of Barack Obama, the first African-American elected President. Retired Lt. William Broadwater, 82, of Upper Marlboro, a Tuskegee Airman, summed up the feeling. "The culmination of our efforts and others' was this great prize we were given on Nov. 4. Now we feel like we've completed our mission." More than 180 airmen attended the January 20, 2009 inauguration.
It would appear that this (the flyover) was supposed to be Barack Obama's "mission accomplished" photo op.
They (the White House) lied. And the press wimped out.
The MSM is dying. There is no one in the MSM with either the spine or the smarts to ask the correct questions of the White House. The MSM will die on its knees like the cowards they are.
As you sow, so shall ye reap.
They don't deserve to survive.
clarice| 4.29.09 @ 10:34PM
Papaya, If this was a photo shoot wouldn't you have the same question--where were the cameras? If this was for a movie, the chase would be the thing and would be filmed from many angles--boats in the water, tall buildings nearby and maybe even some shots from AF 2.

Think of all those poor people in NY who were in a panic when they saw the plane!

Plus all the footage with people running/panicking.
The GOP needs to call for investigations about this.
The White House needs to fire people for this.
The attorney General needs to bring criminal charges against who was responsible.
PapayaSF| 4.30.09 @ 1:57AM
Clarice: Yes, that's my question. If the photo op is AF1+Manhattan, you need a camera in the air, yet the only place for it was the F-16, which is not really suitable for taking high-quality pictures of other aircraft, and which was in the wrong place most (if not all) of the time. If it was for a movie, there would usually be many cameras all over the place. So neither the White House explanation nor the movie explanation makes sense.

If this was a photo-op where was the photographer? The news accounts so far have mentioned only three airplanes - one of the president's 747's and two F-16's. The F-16 is not a photography platform. Professional photography requires a specially modified airplane. Was there such an airplane in the area? If so let's see the photographs for we paid so much to produce.

Go scan the news stories for Michelle Obama. There are lots of them. But there is not a single story for her regarding her activities on
Apr. 27, when Air Farce One buzzed Ground Zero.
The plane's flight pattern puts the lie to the photo op, because the plane swooped low over lower Manhattan....a totaly unnecessary and
unprofessional thing to do, traumatizing thosands of New Yorkers.
This means the plane was there for some other reason. It makes no sense that the plane would have been empty, as there would be zero
reason for the plane to pass over the area at 1,000 feet.
So the plane had passengers. Who were the passengers? Barack was probably at the White House. But where was Michelle?
And who is it that Barack can't say no to AND who could take a presidential limo to AAFB where the planes are kept, thereby getting access to the planes?
There is only one person who fits that description. Michelle Obama? Did she take George Soros for a ride to pay off the massive debt the Obamas owe him for running the scandalous fundraising operation?
The plane was not empty. Someone damn important was on the plane. Who was it? If Michelle had not been on the plane, the personnel at AAFB could have easily said, "You are not authorized to get on this plane."
But Michelle is authorized, or at least she could pull rank.
If Barack was at the White House, Michelle was the passenger.
