Il Duce, Redux?

Trying to handle the crisis, the Fascist government nationalized the holdings of large banks which had accrued significant industrial securities. The government also issued new securities to provide a source of credit for the banks and began enlisting the help of various cartels…. The government offered recognition and support to these organizations in exchange for promises that they would manipulate prices in accordance with government priorities. A number of mixed entities were formed… whose purpose it was to bring together representatives of the government and of the major businesses.… This economic model based on a partnership between government and business was soon extended to the political sphere, in what came to be known as corporatism.… The Fascists began to impose significant tariffs and other trade barriers.… Various banking and industrial companies were financially supported by the state.… [The national leader] created the [New Governmental Entity]….[which soon] controlled 20% of [the nation's] industry through government-linked companies.… [The national leader] also adopted a Keynesian policy of government spending on public works to stimulate the economy.… Public works spending tripled to overtake defense spending as the largest item of government expenditure.

As much as that description sounds like U.S. government policy begun under George W. Bush and now greatly expanding under Barack Obama, the above passage of course describes the economics of fascist Italy in the 1930s, as summed up by Wikipedia. (A quick Google search produces plenty of similar summaries of "economic fascism.") Furthermore, "The Fascist conception of life," Mussolini wrote, "stresses the importance of the State and accepts the individual only in so far as his interests coincide with the State. It is opposed to classical liberalism [which] denied the State in the name of the individual; Fascism reasserts the rights of the State as expressing the real essence of the individual."

Obama came close to those same sentiments in his most recent press conference: "But one of the most important lessons to learn from this crisis is that our economy only works if we recognize that we're all in this together, that we all have responsibilities to each other and to our country…. We'll recover from this recession, but it will take time, it will take patience, and it will take an understanding that, when we all work together, when each of us looks beyond our own short-term interest to the wider set of obligations we have toward each other, that's when we succeed, that's when we prosper, and that's what is needed right now."

Just as Mussolini did (in slightly different words), Obama repeatedly talks about using government to "leverage" private investment for the greater good. And now, as of this week, he actually dared to force a private corporation, General Motors, to fire its CEO. Meanwhile, his close ally Barney Frank introduced a bill to give the Treasury Secretary the power to set all salary levels for all employees of any companies in which the government has a capital stake.

As George Will has written, Congress has delegated so much economic authority to the Treasury, the Fed, and the president that the Constitution itself has almost certainly been shredded in the panic.

Meanwhile, in Congress's rush to pass a huge expansion of "national service" programs, almost exactly as outlined by Obama in a 2007 speech, few congressman likely realized that the details included "campuses" with "superintendents" of uniformed youth, formed into "cadres," and indoctrinated even in math and science classes in the ideals of "service learning" financed through a "social innovation fund" funneled through favored "community organizations." (ACORN, anyone?) Even elementary school students would be recruited for these government-sponsored efforts.

As the Washington Examiner editorialized, it all sounds like a "creepy authoritarianism" on the loose. (See these examples just from last year's campaign.)

Again and again, Obama has called not just for a change of policies, but to "change America" or to "remake" this nation. And here, from his national convention speech last August, is his notion, his collectivist notion, of change: "That's the promise of America -- the idea that we are responsible for ourselves, but that we also rise or fall as one nation; the fundamental belief that I am my brother's keeper; I am my sister's keeper."

Well, no, not when it comes to state power. Government should have no authority to make us be our brothers' "keepers," lest the state itself become Big Brother. Obama said that "mutual responsibility" is the "essence of America's promise," but that's not in any Constitution or Declaration of Independence I can find. Oh, yes, voluntary mutual responsibility is essential for a healthy civic society -- but if government starts determining the shape of that responsibility and forcing it upon us, that is where freedom starts to fade.

Since when was it government's role, as Obama claims, to "invest" in all sorts of new technologies, and to "help our auto companies re-tool" while somehow making it "easier for the American people to afford these new cars"? And who is doing the insisting when Obama talks about "our insistence on something larger, something firmer and more honest in our public life"? Sorry, but if our public life -- defined by the left, in the end, always as that part of life subject to government control -- is larger, it means our private lives, our free lives, are smaller and more constrained.

All of this economic intervention and government expansion, all of this use of collectivist language and collectivist goals, combined with the first big steps towards Obama's goal of "a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded" as the American military, is straight out of Mussolini's playbook.

Then you combine it with the Obamanation of a growing, Il Duce-like cult of the leader. The stadium speeches in front of a Greek emperor's columns. The permanent campaign, the deliberate ubiquity. The "public service" radio ads with the president himself urging national service upon us. The iconic imagery on campaign materials. The millennial language about his own election as the moment when seas stopped rising and Earth started healing and about the need to "save the planet." The traveling abroad with an official entourage of 500 people (and a limo nicknamed "The Beast"). The fawning media. The simplistic slogans chanted over and over.

Then there were the words of Michelle Obama in February of 2008: "Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed."

Finally, there is Obama's elevation of raw science to what he calls its "rightful place" as an end in itself, as if divorced from questions of morality. As Charles Krauthammer wrote, "how anyone as sophisticated as Obama can believe this within living memory of Mengele and Tuskegee…is hard to fathom."

To be clear, none of this is to even come close to equating the Obama administration with Nazism. The conflation of Nazism with fascism is a gross misunderstanding of history; the original fascism and Nazism are entirely different breeds of vipers, with the latter being far more deadly.

I felt a cold deadly shiver go down my spine.

Americans , get motivated and take back our country from this man behind the teleprompters.
He scares the hell out of me. I mean, look at the picture with this article! Good Lord!

Deborah| 4.2.09 @ 7:02AM

Frightening article, Quin, and thanks for it. Thanks for not tip-toe-ing around the truth. This administration has done things behind closed doors and right in front of our faces while those too timid to call him out for it have averted their eyes. It's time to face what this man and the Democrats in power are doing to the country.

"Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." -- James Baldwin. Thanks for having the courage to face it and call it what it is...fascism in America. And, done so quickly before America has even caught its breath.

Wake up American mainstream media, is this really what you want? Your job is to prevent this type of insanity in the country by shining a light on it, not enable it.

God help this country.

Iaidoka| 4.2.09 @ 7:06AM

Yes, it is frightening. But I'm afraid it's too late to be terrified. I'm afraid that the United States of America is done. I'm afraid the majority of the American people WANT the government to do everything for them. I'm afraid the American people are now too stupid (thanks, NEA) to even understand what government control of their lives means.

Dave| 4.2.09 @ 7:16AM

I've often thought we are a nation of frogs in boiling water.

Melvin| 4.2.09 @ 7:21AM

Stephanie, Americans are going to do one damn thing to confront this plague of fascism that is washing over our country.
Many Americans are too self-absorbed, celebrity worshiping sheeple.
Oh sure, there is the percentage that sees through Obama's rhetoric and complain, but they're numbers have already been factored in by the government and are easily dissuaded and manageable.
Over sixty-two million Americans did not vote for Obama, and where are they. They're sitting on the fence waiting for someone else to do the heavy lifting of resistance.
They'll talk a good game like many do here at American Spectator, but are unwilling to commit to anything tangible. There's the silly tea parties that government officials scoff at and deride the participants as mere harmless nuisances.
Many post that what this Country needs a revolution. Earth to America, the revolution has already been fought and the Liberal fascists have won, the thing is no one from the Conservative side showed up to fight.
If a revolution is to be fought it takes a commitment from the people but somehow a revolution gets in the way of soccer practice and Facebook.
When our cultural starts to go feral and the beginnings of that are already happening such as the mob incident in Modesto California don't say that you weren't forewarned.

David Mathews| 4.2.09 @ 7:30AM

It doesn't take a lot of effort to get a bunch of uneducated, talk radio listening conservative idiots scared, does it?

The most important sentence in the above article is:

"As much as that description sounds like U.S. government policy begun under George W. Bush ... "

Yeah, the original fascist was George W. Bush.

Now you conservatives can go back to your tinfoil hats and cry to each other with your irrational fear.

Perhaps you all should go John Galt yourself!

Deborah| 4.2.09 @ 7:31AM

Well, Iaidoka, then we should just throw in the towel? No, it is up to those of us who understand the implications and what kind of future this portends for the country to do the educating ourselves.

We the people. It is up to us. To adopt and Obamaism...Yes, we can.

David Mathews| 4.2.09 @ 7:34AM

Hello Melvin,

* "Many post that what this Country needs a revolution. Earth to America, the revolution has already been fought and the Liberal fascists have won, the thing is no one from the Conservative side showed up to fight. "

The conservatives cannot fight a revolution because:

1. They aren't intelligent and educated enough to lead a revolution.

2. They aren't fit because their morbidly obese bodies are overtaxed simply by walking to the counter at McDonald's.

3. These conservative extremists are a minority so they would lose very quickly.

4. Armed insurrection is the behavior of domestic terrorists. To Gitmo you people would go if you ever attempted to lead a revolution.

5. There's an election in 2010 and 2012. You've got to work really hard to avoid losing those elections in a humiliating manner. Revolution talk isn't compatible with democracy even when a political party is as extremist and irrelevant as the Republican party.

Now you conservatives can get back to your crying!

David Mathews| 4.2.09 @ 7:36AM

Hello Deborah,

* "... to do the educating ourselves"

Great idea, but conservatives must at first be educated. That's something your side lacks. Ignorance and idiocy govern the Republican party.

Remember George W. Bush?

Deborah| 4.2.09 @ 7:37AM

Good grief, Melvin, which side are you on?

The tea parties are the beginning of a movement. It takes a while for all of the crap thrown at Americans in this short period of time to filter down. (The media hasn't been one bit of help either).

So, Melvin, stop your whining and start something in your own community.

Deborah| 4.2.09 @ 7:38AM

My motto: Ignore stupid trolls.

David Mathews| 4.2.09 @ 7:41AM

Hello Deborah,

* "My motto: Ignore stupid trolls. "

Boo hoo hoo ... the conservatives are cying. Listen to them cry!

Are you going Galt?

TennesseeVolunteer| 4.2.09 @ 7:47AM

Dave, you don't even want to mess with us when we get mad, now go away. You're like a chihuahua that won't let go of our pants leg.

David Mathews| 4.2.09 @ 7:55AM

Hello Tennessee (last bastion of the Republican party ... the Deep South),

* "Dave, you don't even want to mess with us when we get mad, now go away. You're like a chihuahua that won't let go of our pants leg. "

When you people get mad you'll have to expend an extra amount of effort to get your morbidly obese bodies off the couch so that you might go John Galt yourself.

Chuck| 4.2.09 @ 8:15AM

David,
You are a classic lib. You call conservatives morbidly obese and lazy and yet it is the liberal who wants to lay around and have someone take care of them. The conservatives gets up and works everyday to support himself and every liberal sucking on the government teat. Maybe we will go Gault on you. I am sure you will not be able to support yourself if we do.

Melvin| 4.2.09 @ 8:15AM

Oh I have started something in my community Miss Deborah, that is why I got my butt on homeland Security's watch list. I've paid my way to Washington D.C. to support the Veterans and military.
Come on Deborah be realistic will you. How can a this tea parties have any effect on the politicians in Washington D.C.?
I'll tell you what exactly what the politicians think while they are at their evening cocktail parties. "Hmm, the Conservatives are upset again and are having these tea parties.""Yea, my staff mentioned something about them, not much to really worry about up here though, oh sure we'll act like we're listening to them, but their harmless, just like the Fair Tax rallies they'll eventually tire of it and peter out and nothing will become of it."
I hardly agree with David Mathews on anything and I've posted numerous times to go take a flying leap, but he does have a point with his Hello Melvin post, caustic and sarcastic but read the basic premise and he does have a point.
The Republican Party is a pee poor example of the Conservative movement, all of the leadership wants to be king, hell they cannot even elect a Republican chairman without wanting to resign one day after Micheal Steele was elected.
I'm not whining Deborah I'm just stating the facts as they are and playing out.
Tea Parties might be a noble in cause and gesture but they won't accomplish didly squat to have any effect in Washington D.C. and my way won't work either because it would land your ass in Gitmo or worse.
But until Conservatives stop arguing among-st themselves the fascist bastards will keep winning elections.

I'm not whining, I'm taking action.

Paul Crowley| 4.2.09 @ 8:21AM

"It's time to face what this man and the Democrats in power are doing to the country."

Building upon the foundations established during the 8 years of the Bush Administration, with a Republican-led Congress almost 6 years of the time and a
Democratic-led Congress for the last 2 years of it. That, in turn, built upon the 12 years of Bush-Clinton.

Overall, building upon the work of over 45 years, especially of the past 39 years, and the reforms of the past 20.It's time to implement regulation for the American-Anglo-French "Free World" Bloc of over 120 countries.

The military advance into Pakistan initiated by the Bush Administration, the same day of Palin's acceptance speech at the Republican convention, and the development of lines of communication in Afghanistan, are all being continued by the Obama Administration.

The antagonism of, and belligerence toward, China, is being ramped up as well.

Nothing like a good depression to prepare for a general war?

WRTolkas| 4.2.09 @ 8:22AM

Fellow readers of The American Spectator;

I have read the comments to and from Mr. David Mathews and other readers of The American Spectator. From reading his comments and replies, I note that Mr. Mathews is very well educated, an excellent conversationalist, but is somewhat lacking in gentile grace.

To the readers of The American Spectator who write comments to and about Mr. Mathews let me provide insight I learned whilst I worked in the professional audio field:

Arguing with someone who is highly opinionated and set in his beliefs is like wrestling with a pig in the mud. Why? Because after a time you discover, after you are wet, dirty, and muddy, that the pig has been enjoying the sport.

Please go ahead and read Mr. Mathews’ comments. I do not believe in censorship. But just don’t attempt to argue with the man. You will just receive a face full of mud.

Mr. Mathews, this is just a parable. I do not think you are a pig but the loyal opposition.

Your humble servant,

WRTolkas

Why don't you go John Galt?

Make Ayn Rand proud!

You'll find out very quickly that you are easily replaced. Conservatives work so very hard because you know that already.

IMKessel| 4.2.09 @ 8:28AM

I usually stay out of the fray (and avoid using first person voice when I do), but some postings lately have called me forth to add my voice.

Reading the post-article commentary is often like a postprandial walk. It allows the enjoyment to be remembered, extended or re-experienced. But just as dog waste left by an uncaring pet owner can be a most unwelcomed distraction, so are some of the postings; they are just a pile of steaming crap. If I were to see such an owner, I would feel compelled by manners and civic duty to speak up. I now feel compelled to do so now.

Some simple rules for debating: no ad hominem; attack the argument, not the person. Use your brain then your mouth (or keyboard), not the other way around. Hold your convictions but allow for reasonable response. One does not need to be disagreeable when disagreeing.

As for how to debate:

Persuasive Essay
What is a persuasive/argument essay?
Persuasive writing, also known as the argument essay, utilizes logic and reason to show that one idea is more legitimate than another idea. It attempts to persuade a reader to adopt a certain point of view or to take a particular action. The argument must always use sound reasoning and solid evidence by stating facts, giving logical reasons, using examples, and quoting experts.
When planning a persuasive essay, follow these steps:

1. Choose your position. Which side of the issue or problem are you going to write about, and what solution will you offer? Know the purpose of your essay.

2. Analyze your audience. Decide if your audience agrees with you, is neutral, or disagrees with your position.

3. Research your topic. A persuasive essay must provide specific and convincing evidence. Often it is necessary to go beyond your own knowledge and experience. You might need to go to the library or interview people who are experts on your topic.

4. Structure your essay. Figure out what evidence you will include and in what order you will present the evidence. Remember to consider your purpose, your audience, and you topic.
The following criteria are essential to produce an effective argument

• Be well informed about your topic. To add to your knowledge of a topic, read thoroughly about it, using legitimate sources. Take notes.

• Test your thesis. Your thesis, i.e., argument, must have two sides. It must be debatable. If you can write down a thesis statement directly opposing your own, you will ensure that your own argument is debatable.

• Disprove the opposing argument. Understand the opposite viewpoint of your position and then counter it by providing contrasting evidence or by finding mistakes and inconsistencies in the logic of the opposing argument.

• Support your position with evidence. Remember that your evidence must appeal to reason.

The following are different ways to support your argument:

Facts - A powerful means of convincing, facts can come from your reading, observation, or personal experience.

Note: Do not confuse facts with truths. A "truth" is an idea believed by many people, but it cannot be proven.

Statistics - These can provide excellent support. Be sure your statistics come from responsible sources. Always cite your sources.

Quotes - Direct quotes from leading experts that support your position are invaluable.

Examples - Examples enhance your meaning and make your ideas concrete. They are the proof.

Have a good day.

You've just described the entire conservative noise machine!

Oxycontin Rush, Weeping Glenn Beck, Hannity the Insanity, Sarah the Moose-Killer, Michael "the token" Steele, Bobby "I'm a token, too" Jindal, and all these blog blowhards who spend all of their time weeping because they are such losers and they know it all too well.

Hello IMK,

* "Some simple rules for debating ... "

Thanks so very much. The conservatives need some educating before they can become educated, though.

There is always eugenics in fascism. To say you are not comparing Obama to the Nazi's is a cop out. He doesn't much care, as he showed on Jay Leno, for those in the special Olympics. His good bud, Tommy Daschle doesn't think old folks should be given life-saving treatment. Watch out, Hillyer, Obamaniacs may find some trait of yours they don't think is worthy of life.

Mark H| 4.2.09 @ 8:40AM

Dear David,

I see by your inane posts that you've figured out who John Galt is. Congrats! It's best not to overuse it though. Makes you appear ignorant. Like the kid who just learned a new word and uses it over and over. Oh yeah, sorry!

Rich Berger| 4.2.09 @ 8:44AM

What really bothered me yesterday was the following:

"Don't think we're not keeping score, brother." That's what President Barack Obama said to Rep. Peter DeFazio in a closed-door meeting of the House Democratic Caucus last week, according to the Associated Press.

A few weeks ago, Mr. DeFazio voted against the administration's stimulus bill. The comment from Mr. Obama was a presidential rebuke and part of a new, hard-nosed push by the White House to pressure Congress to adopt the president's budget. He has mobilized outside groups and enlisted forces still in place from the Obama campaign.

We're dealing with a cold-blooded, vicious man protected by a fawning press.

David Mathews| 4.2.09 @ 8:56AM

Melvin's post was subliminally on my mind as I drove to work today. For decades, I, and I suspect many at TAS, have struggled with the glass half full/empty when assessing the common sense and good will of the average American.
Bill Buckley famously intoned that he would rather have been governed by the 1st 2,000 names in the Boston phone directory than the 2,000 faculty members at Harvard.
Melvin's frustration is palpable and I can't say he is wrong. I can say however, that human nature being what it is, requires much time to react, like the great ship changing course. The left has done a masterful job of shoving incrementalism down our throats, and we've taken the doses willingly.
I have not given up hope however, Obama and his drones will stub their toes because leftists always over reach, it's their nature. All it will take is one brave man/woman to lead the charge and the leftist house of cards will collapse.

Obama Drools| 4.2.09 @ 9:10AM

Hey, how about an iPod?

This pathetic graduate of C.O.C.O (College Of Community Organizing) uses his Chicago Thug tactics to strong-arm Democrat Congressman Fazio---"We're keeping score, chump. Don't you forget it.".

"Il Duce, Redux?"

This is a bit much.

Rather, since it's a new era, and a different country:
The One, arrives.
Is probably more fitting.

Besides, the Bush-Clintion-Bush-Obama administrations military adventures and conquests leave Benito M. looking like a piker.

America, supported by European Advanced Bases [and industry, since Americans no longer supply American forces (literrally no "support to our troops")] has made incursions into northeast Africa (G.H.W. Bush; Clinton; G.W. Bush; Obama),
maintained a 12-year aerial and missile bombardment of Iraq (G.H.W. Bush; Clinton; G.W. Bush), invaded and conquered Yugoslavia (dissolved and partitioned) (Clinton; G.W. Bush) and Iraq (G.W. Bush), bombarded and invaded Afghanistan (Clinton; G.W.
Bush), launched military incursions into Pakistan (G.W. Bush; Obama), and made political incursions into northwest, north-central and sub-Saharan Africa (G.W. Bush; Obama). Britain has grabbed Timor, with American air transport and naval support (G.W. Bush); The American-Anglo-French "Free World" bloc have China increasingly boxed in (The Japan-Taiwan-India-SEATO, including new member Vietnam, element in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean, with India arming rapidly and ramping up the
tough-guy rhetoric against Pakistan). The Dali Lhama has uncovered what is hinted as Chinese "Cyber warfare."Our "Free World" Anglo-French-Dutch allies have dissolved Zambia (ex Belgian Congo) and been running about in their old African colonies (G.W.
Bush).Syria, Libya, Cuba and Venezuela are cutting trade deals with the Russians; Iran is cutting trade deals with Syria, Cuba and Venezuela; American Propaganda against Chavez is being ramped up; Chavez is ramping up propaganda against Obama;
Venezuela and Bolivia are aligned with each other; Brazil and Colombia are aligned with America; Argentina and Chile still seem to be on the fence. . . Russia appears to be playing both ends.

Iceland, Ireland, the Baltic states and the eastern Europeans are sinking; the euro is probably rising; China and Brazil are advocating a world currency to
replace the American dollar;

Iran and the DPRK are launching satellites into space; Gingrich, an ex Speaker of the House is claiming that only 1-3 nuclear missiles can immobilize the entire U.S.A., and possible destroy the country, killing up to 90 million people, and calling to shoot down North Korean ballistic missiles (which the DPRK say
will be an act of war and Gingrich says, 'so be it.').

The ex American Vice President, Al Gore is continuing his predictions of 20 foot sea-level rises and global environmental catastrophe; The ex-Commuunist President of the Czech Republic, lame-duck president of the EU, hero-to-the-right "Free Market" lion, is decrying Gore as a phony and alarmist, out to harm The Markets; Ron Paul, the great Libertarian hope, who no one would have ever heard of if it were not for the Internet is plagiarizing William Jennings Bryan's statements and style for the purpose of advocating a return to the Gold Standard(!) while plagiarizing the Wobblies critique of government to advocate more power to the corporations(!); Reformed Marxian organizations are advocating nationalization of Finance (without
mention that it is all intertwined between the U.S.A., Japan, Britain, France, Belgium and Germany, and associated satellites). . .

America (USia?), Russia and China have reversed roles and rhetoric in the course of this Clinton-Bush-Obama phase of the post-Bush-Gorbachev New World Order.

Blatant misdirection propaganda like "Il Duce, Redux?" and other diversionary articles are being released by the right; the left is doing the same on their websites. . .

America is a nation of metropolitan areas, which is to say that is effectively a nation of Icelands. . .

With a mess like this . . .

One should be at least curious to see what develops in London this week, no?

Paul Crowley| 4.2.09 @ 9:19AM

"Il Duce, Redux?"

In fairness:

What has Obama gotten to "run on time," yet?
When were there riots in our streets?
What order had to be restored?
In this regard, Benito M. makes Obama look like a Piker.

Another Chuck| 4.2.09 @ 9:20AM

Good reading.
http://liberalfascism.nationalreview.com/post/?q=OTEwYmM4OTE4ZTgzODJiYmE0NzU0NTdhNTUzMDhhYmE=

“Fascism,” Il Duce declared time and again, “is a religion.” And the animating dogma of that faith was that if we’re all in it together there’s nothing we can’t do. Everything in the state, nothing outside the state.

Such a vision is comforting because it plays upon man’s inherent desire to belong, to be protected by his fellow man and his community. “Strength in numbers” is the narcotic of all populists, the logic of all “people powered movements” as leftwing bloggers like to say (though for reasons that defy easy analysis, the left has mastered the art of casting itself as the voice of the dissidents against the oppressive, stultifying “herd mentality” even as it places the group at the top of its hierarchy of political aesthetics). This is the motivating passion behind the fascist quest for order.

Isn't it amazing how Obama and other statists use the term "my brother's keeper"? The phrase first used by the murderer, Cain, when God asked him what happened to Able. Trying to weasle his way out, Cain asks God, "what, am I my brother's keeper?"

Elijah| 4.2.09 @ 10:27AM

Good to know that there others out there who "didn't drink the Kool-Aid" concerning Obama.

During the campaign anyone who questioned the Great One was accused of McCarthyism. We were told it was irrelevant that for 20 years he sat in the pews of a racist, semi-literate radical like Jeremiah Wright. It was irrelevant that he launched his political career in the home of good friend Bill Ayers, Anti-American radical and domestic terrorist. It was irrelevant that he bashes his own country on every other page of both of his narcissistic "auto-biographies". It was irrelevant that his admitted "mentor" (Frank Marshall Davis) was a member of the Communist party. All of his dubious connections to ACORN and the like had no relevance in the new post-partisan age being initiated by the Brilliant Leader.

Well, is it irrelevant now??

Bram| 4.2.09 @ 10:48AM

I didn't understand why Bush so obviously and willingly played the part of Herbert Hoover. Nobody who has been paying attention can be surprised by rise of the Neo-Fascists.

Fascism was a leftist movement until the Nazi's sullied the name to the point of it being an insult. It was a form of Socialism with some of the real nonsense stripped out - combined with sufficient force to make it effective. It requires a disregard for rules (such as the Constitution) and hostility towards freedom - both economic and personal. Useful idiots like DM come in handy too.

Melvin,

I think it's like Deborah said: the tea parties are a start. Don't count us out just yet; the fact that you're getting involved with Homeland Security proves that not everyone is taking this lying down. Good for you.

Lastly, I don't think it's conservatives arguing among themselves so much as it is elected Republican officials. I've learned recently to distinguish Republicans from Conservatives; these days I think it's necessary.

Big Leo| 4.2.09 @ 11:15AM

Bram,
You are right about Fascism being a socialist movement with some of the nonsense left out-- it's also Social Democracy with a club. And Obama has shown himself eager to use that club, as per his personal attacks on Rush Limbaugh. We've already seen Obama's disregard for rules and the Constitution and his hostility to freedom.
Anyone who read his books and watched the faces of his followers could have easily predicted this whole thing.

There is no rational person on this thread who doesn't see the inherent Fascism in Obama's actions and words. I'd like to hear a rational refutation of this analysis, but so far I haven't. Even among friends who are reasonably intelligent I get the same vicious response, as if they were pixilated by him. The ad hominum attacks we read in the press are duplicated in the vox populi. That is what worries me the most. The support for him isn't calm and rational-- there's a hysterical edginess to it, a meanness focusing on the enemies of the State rather than the content of the argument.

If Obama worries me, the people who are his fanatical supporters worry me even more.

Dudes!

I can't believe it! I've been gone for only a few weeks and you let this fat hippy chick, David Mathews, to vomit stupid crap all over the board! Heed my warning, once you let one stupid, fat hippy chick on the board, other hippies will follow – dumb ass white guys with dreadlocks and Bob Marley hats. They will infest your neighborhoods. Then you know what you have? A music festival!

Listen, that stinky hippy, like all stinky hippies, only parrots what she was told in her freshman semester class in community college: Che Guevara for Dummies 101. Or worse, at the Rackham Social Science Graduate School at the University of Michigan. She gets her stipend from Gorge Soros or the DNC or Keith Olberturd’s dumpster to survive and pay for her granola cereal, trail mix, weed and Hippie Hippy Indian Water Buffalo Sandals! Then her and her ilk sit around their communal public housing tenement off State Street in Ann Arbor and infest discussion boards because they can’t get a job with their lousy degrees – not until Obama came along! Now they are on the verge of taking over!

Very soon, I warn you, Obama will mandate that we all buy our vegetables at a local co-op, and that is where you will find David Mathews and other fat hippy chicks! At places with names like The Chairman’s Little Red Book Community Co-op They will run the place – they will have to, since their boyfriends can’t hold down any jobs because they are too busy smoking pot and trying to finish the first chapter of their Eco Manifesto, “The Trees Are Crying!” (Can’t you understand, Babe! The world needs to hear what I have to say! This will be the male hippies’ plea to the females of the tribe! If you hear it, shoot the poor bastard – he’s too far gone at that point.)

I warn you here and now! Shun the fat hippie chick named David Mathews – and any other of her breed that may post here. The live on the blood and money of others! If you must see what your board will look like if you persist in letting this scum rest here, Google Detroit! See?! See what they bring! She must be captured, de-pierced, hosed down and scrubbed with a big soapy brush, forced to get a real job and ditch her hippy boyfriend! If she resists?! Well, I can only say that my services are expensive. I have only used the Hippy Driller once and many died. But I am willing to be hired again for this important mission. Damn you, hippies! I though I was out! But you always drag me back in!

Sadly, many innocent hippies will die along with the deranged, leftist community organizers. Those innocent souls who have been rendered harmless by years of Grateful Dead and Fish concerts and balloons of laughing gas and smoke tents. You will see their pathetic lives in what remains on ther bodies – bottles of patchouli oil, pot seeds in a plastic pill container, unused food stamps, old, unused rubbers (they had dreams, once) and underwear made from hemp (parts of them smoked). Both funny and pathetic, true - but the innocent always die in war.

So be warned! Banish the hippies from your midst or they will eat your seed corn; sleep in your garage; rummage through your rubbish; beg for change; fall asleep stoned behind the fertilizer spreader and smell up your garbage can area.

God Speed, posters. May you squash the stinky hippies before they skitter under the floorboards and infest your walls and drains. If you need me, you know where to find me – Eric Cartmen.

Don't worry so much. Fairly soon the republicans will be in officae again and they will completely forget any and all lessons they could have learned while in the minority. Reconcilliation will be considered great again, filibusters will be considered terrible again, if a popular repoublican president wins then suddenly the two term limit will be a bad thing.
If you want to change things run for office, just remember before too much longer you'll be out of power to.
Republicans were in solid control for 6 years during which time balanced budgets would have been nice but weren't of vital interest. Now the democrats are in control and balanced budgets would be nice but there is more important stuff to do.
And don't whine that RINO were in control. The republicans party is majority ruled, therefore the minority is the group that does not abide with the party line and are the RINOs.

Parmenter| 4.2.09 @ 11:40AM

Let us not forget that Obama only won by 2%. Just 2%.

And that doesn't involve subtracting the 100,000 per State fraudulent votes thanks to ACORN, the multiple votes by Dems, voting by Disney characters and the Dead.

There is no overwhelming majority supporting the Socialist Democrat putsch in Washington with the Pelosi-Reid-Obama triumvirate.

The Christian principles of political resistance teach that if reform can be accomplished by the political process, that is the method to use.

If it cannot be, then flee.

If flight is impossible, then, and only under the authority of the legitimate lesser magistrates (the States and counties), is the place for armed resistance.

While threats to the political process have been breathed - such as against talk radio - they have not yet come to pass. While disarming the citizenry-in-arms has been spoken of, it is not yet underway.

The 10th Amendment movement is booming.

The key date thus remains the first Tuesday of November, 2010, barring precipitous action, such as gun grabs or arrests of political opponents by the junta.

As a former boy scout, I believe in being prepared. Even so, the political process is not yet dead, and that is the sole lawful path at this time.

Paul Crowley| 4.2.09 @ 12:05PM

"END the FED fools."

That'll get it done. Address people by a term of endearment like "fools."

This is another favorite theme these days, being set up for years now.

It unites a whole host of "strange bedfellow" propagandist writers ranging from Libertarian fronts to the libertarian "paleo-conservative" fronts to reformed Marxists to self-named "neo-conservatives" to Objectivists (Talk about a "menagerie") to the
Baldwin faction of the so-called Evangelicals (i.e. Reformed American Congressional Protestants) to the Nation Institute.

Ok. We nationalize the Federal Reserve (exactly how "we" do this isn't stated).

Then what?

“Free World” Bloc Finance is intertwined between the U.S.A., Britain, the Dutch, France, Japan, Germany and now Saudi Arabia and Dubai (“Islamic Banking:” which would have been an oxymoron prior to 2005). Brirtain includes the reformed British Empire: The
British Commonwealth of Nations; officially known as The Commonwealth. Singapore, India (The Hindu Raj), Pakistan (The Moslem Raj), and the bank island “nations” of the Caribbean.

The People's Republic of China (PRC) is not allowed to invest or purchase anything of any real significance in the U.S.A. The relationship is nothing like that of American-Japanese relationship in the 1980s. China is not able to invest heavily in banking.

The same is not true of Britain, the Dutch, France, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Mexico or Venezuela (real estate, banking, mining, chemical process industries, petroleum refining, manufacturing, transportation and shipping. . . ).

The entire American distribution system has been reformed, and developed, circa 1956-present (maritime, road, rail, air, pipeline, information communications), interconnecting British Canada, the U.S.A. and Mexico in continental North America,
and continental North America with Western Europe, the Western Pacific, the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf.

American industry has been literally shut down and relocated, north to south and west, in about 40 years’ time.

Large mining, processing and manufacturing modernization projects are underway across the continent, around the new reformed distribution system.

American minerals, metal-ores, coal, petroleum, precious metals, shut in, and conserved,
for 50-25 years, are being opened up again.

Industry in the U.S.A. (I won't call it "American," because it’s not), is being modernized and large to huge projects have been in the works, some begun, some beginning, other set to begin: Petroleum refining, steel production, and manufacturing plants.

Germany, France, Japan, Taiwan the Republic of Korea, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia have effectively been developed as advanced processing and manufacturing centers, supplying American-led military forces from East Asia and from Europe, via major Advanced naval and air bases, including repair facilities, in the western Pacific, Mediterranean (Italy and Spain) and the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf.

British companies dominate maritime routes, the Japanese have un-matched logistical shipping expertise and are expert in weapons manufacture, ground, air, and naval (obviously with the aid of American battle experience, or else they would not be).

Manufacturing within the Bloc has been formed on the manufacturing procedure adopted by the American-Anglo-Russian alliance in WWII: Parts shipped to Russia and assembled in Russian factories.

This is what provides a great deal of the "support the troops" in the Indian Ocean, Central Asia, and Africa.

The U.S.A. is sure no "arsenal of democracy" any longer. It hasn't been to "allies" since about 1946.

The U.S.A. has not been an "arsenal of the U.S. Military" since about 1974 onward.

The populations of North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa have undergone severe de-culturization over the past 50 years and are being reformed. The “Moslem world” is having the same done to it by military force, and the usual debauching influences imposed upon them by force.

America is not the sole military power or force within the bloc. The technically advanced militaries of Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Germany, France, India, Pakistan, and the manpower of the smaller “nations” of the British empire, the Dutch and French “ex” colonies, and probably a good bit of the ex Warsaw Pact have to be factored in. Modern
communications, decades of common training, and the principle of division of labor, facilitates formation of an effective combined military force, dwarfing the
American-Anglo-Russian alliance of World War II (when the British and Dutch contributed very little by way of manpower).

Lines of Communication in, and between, Asia, Africa and Central and South America (maritime, road, rail, air, pipeline, information communications), make military action by modern military forces designed for rapid movement possible, where it was not possible 60-70 years ago.

Standardization and simplification of designs now allow for mass-production of military ships, aircraft and ground vehicles, equipped with complex weapons systems, able to be manned by operators, that would not have been possible just 30 years ago while development was still underway. Military expansion has potential to be rapid and huge.

Americans are now almost entirely an urbanized people (99.1%: About where Britain was by 1870, and where most of Western Europe was by the turn of the 20th century). The overwhelming number of Americans OWN nothing but disposable property. Even the hope of property and business ownership has been lost by most, since owning anything other than disposable property is not an option for the majority of Americans. Hence the ability of the McCain Campaign to redefine the “American Dream” as mere “home ownership” last year.

The majority of Americans are laborers, with pay severely reduced, and pensions and benefits removed (and redefined). The aspect of the “American Dream” of the 1950s and 1960s in which laborers were able to live at the level of lower middle class, supporting a
family on a single paycheck, is now fully gone for more than 95% of the population.

The Populist Party (long gone) support of such as the Silver Standard, and the Federal Reserve, at the end of the 19th century, and turn of the 20th, and of post-WWII America to make financing available to the lower middle class and working man so as to own his
own property or business no longer applies to the vast majority of Americans.

This is an entirely different country from 1941.

The entire population has been corrupted, divided against itself, led astray by liars, and formed into moral midgets, RIGHT and LEFT. Now in the “process” of being reformed as “communities” (Again, via an amazing assortment of “strange bedfellows” organizations).

This is already a nation of slaves.

And the slaves cry out: "Give us jobs!"

The majority of Americans serving in the military since 1980 onward, have done so because they need a job.

America is a tremendously wealthy country, in terms of real property (mineral and natural resources) and population. North America is a tremendously wealthy portion of the continent in terms of real property and population.

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is more dependent upon the American-Anglo-French Bloc, then the Bloc is upon the PRC. In like manner to Japan's dependence upon America, circa 1939.

In real terms, natural resources, and population, the U.S.A., while inconvenienced, can easily survive without the PRC, but what about the PRC without the American-Anglo-French Bloc?

The PRC has settled the long-running border disputes with Russia.

Border and maritime disputes otherwise aboud, north-east to south-west Asia, and all between: China-Japan, Korea-Japan, China-Taiwan, China-Vietnam, China-India, India-Pakistan. . .
And unstable hot spots: Kashmir-India-Pakistan, Myanmar (ex British Burma, Tibet, Sri Lanka (ex Ceylon). . .

Russia is both aiding and seemingly inhibiting American-Anglo-French Bloc advances into south-central Asia, but mostly aiding it (without Russian support it would have been next to impossible and subsequently unsustainable).

The American-Anglo-French Bloc has the PRC encircled, with interior Lines of Communications, while the PRC Lines of Communications, outside continental Asia, have to cross the encirclement.

So, again: Ok. We nationalize the Federal Reserve exactly how "we" do this isn't stated).

What will be the consequences of this?

What will be the "global" consequences of this?

What will be the consequences of this for the People's Repbulic of China?

Then what?

“While disarming the citizenry-in-arms has been spoken of, it is not yet underway. . . . barring precipitous action, such as gun grabs or arrests of political opponents by the junta. As a former boy scout, I believe in being prepared.”

I’ve always been opposed to gun control, but rejected the notion of a “citizenry-in-arms” as a safeguard of American freedoms as foolish and unrealistic. It is.

In hindsight, fear of gun registration was a lot of nothing. Gun registration would have become a mess, and utterly useless, very quickly, given the large numbers of people being herded, and shifted around the country, especially about 1960 onward. In the 1960s and 1970s it would have all been paper and clerks, since personal computers didn’t begin to become common until about 1981 onward.

Today, then gun registration, or physical disarming would be unnecessary. Whoever controls the ammunition controls the guns. Ammunition supply could be isolated to an area easily. With modern computing systems, and product tracking technology, data bases would be a more efficient way to ascertain the extent of arms and who has them.

I obviously didn’t care for the “The Czechs registered their guns” bumper sticker, complete with the little red tanks at the bottom.

I detest the “they’ll pry my gun from my cold dead hands” bumper stickers. What a foolish phrasing.
I understand the intention is supposed to be one of defiance, but THAT phrasing isn’t it! If it comes to a confrontation with a modern military or police forces, then that’s right: They will (actually, they’ll pick it up from beside your cold, dead, body).

It’s ridiculous to believe that individuals armed with shotguns, pistols and hunting rifles would be a match against a modern military, or even against modern police forces (SWAT teams are common as dirt: Most “Bedroom” communities around here have one.
Effectively they are para-military units armed with automatic weapons and trained in light infanty assault tactics). “Urban warfare” has become a military specialty. Good luck taking to the woods, swamps or desert. At this point and time, most who call themselves “hunters,” increasing aren’t. That resistance” wouldn’t last long at all. And resistance
movements are useless without the hope of conventional military forces arriving in relief or liberation (and are usually used to facilitate entry of conventional military forces into a region). I thought the movie "Red Dawn" was ridiculous. But did notice that the young guys ate the fantasy up like chocolate candy.

Given today’s military, than even if an modern armor division mutinied, which is difficult to imagine being possible (it’s hard to conceive that such could be organized), then given the federated structure of our armed forces, with highly-centralized overall command and control, particularly over the satellite communications that the vehicle operators, and most of the American military, depend upon, then, while it might cause some localized damage, the mutinying division would be isolated and annihilated in short
order.

My support for gun ownership is for self protection, since crime was allowed to balloon out of hand, and become institutionalized in America, circa 1969 onward. It falls and rises, and shifts, place to place, but, unfortunately, the barbarism has become a part of
American culture.

What this country was allowed to become is a national disgrace. But given it, then people need to be able to defend themselves in a crime-ridden society such as America has been allowed to become in the past 40 years, especially females. Sorry girls, there is no such thing as a “fighting women,” except in fiction and government propaganda. A gun is the prefect “equalizer” for a female.

I don't comprehend the degree of pessimism shown by some here. The conservative cause looked much worse after the '64 election, and even after that of '92. But these erratic swings by the voters have a way of righting themselves with the help of the very Democrats who won those elections.

Arrogance has a way of pulling down the temporarily mighty, and arrogance is BO's most distinguishing characteristic. He and our lovely First Lady are riding high now, but are already starting to sow the seeds of their own downfall. The only question is whether whoever is pulling Obama's strings—be it Axelrod or someone else—will see the danger coming in time to reprogram Barack's teleprompter before the next national election.

BO is merely the front man for this socialistic conspiracy. His only experience in governance is in running for office, then serving as a figurehead for those who do the actual work of legislating and developing programs. Except for a few pet projects, he allows others to make the decisions and do the work of passing laws, only standing at the podium to take credit.

Before allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed by the charisma of Obama, we should consider the DVD and iPod fiascoes—what's next, an Xbox for Putin? This man is not nearly as bright as we've been told, and his intellectual weaknesses become steadily more apparent.

Son Of Sam| 4.2.09 @ 1:32PM

Fellow patriots, we are not forced to blindly obey the ObamaNazis, any more than our ancestors were bound to blindly obey "a dunce of a king, born without brains". The TelePrompter in Chief doesn't represent "change" of any kind: he's just another ridiculous sad sack imagining that he's been given the authority of a god. He is arrogating power to himself, just as Caesar did, and any good reader of Shakespeare knows how HIS career ended. Caligula thought that he WAS a god, and anyone who read "I, Claudius" knows how well that worked for him. A picture of this grinning fool is on every magazine cover, and they report on him in the same puppy-eyed, hand licking fashion that was used in Mussolini's Italy; and any student of history knows how "Il Duce" ended his days. (At the end of a rope, spat on by those who used to blindly obey him!)

There are only two things that need to happen, and happen they will:

A) lovers of America need to DROP the slave mentality. Stop talking about how the people "want" this new tyranny, because they don't: they were tricked by a lying demagogue using slick marketing, just as the German people were fooled by Hitler. I know from my own personal experience of dozens of friends and co-workers who voted for "change", and are already completely dis-illusioned. We need to work on them, and get them to
1) DIS-AFFILIATE from the party of tyranny known as the Democrats
2) UN-SUBSCRIBE from all the propaganda rags posing as "independent" magazines

B) the other thing that needs to happen is that the ObamaNazis and their Kool Aid swigging, zombie-brained followers need to STEP ASIDE gracefully, before they get run the f**k over. Just remember a little history, you sawed-off puffed up little bucket mouths, and avoid the people's wrath while you still have time

Parmenter| 4.2.09 @ 1:59PM

Bilwick,
Fascism has always been a liberal idea, also called Progressivism.

The book you are thinking of is an older one, _ Barbarism With a Human Face_ by Bernard Henry Levi.

Crowley, then you reject the America and Great Britain of the past 15 centuries. The Englishry-in-arms enshrined in the Bill of Rights of 1688, and going back to the original Angle and Jutish settlers is a natural right, and unalienable. It is strongly defended in the Federalist and Anti-Federalist Papers and in the Constitution. It is our answer to the old question "quis custodes ipsos custodiet?" It is essential for any free people, and its suppression is always one of the first steps of tyranny.

You are correct that the citizenry, experiencing illegal restrictions on arms and training since the 1930s, do not possess the arms intended by the Framers. I made it very clear that I am strongly opposed to private armed actions. In the case of repelling tyranny, under lawfully elected magistrates, with the State militias and federal regulars being the greater part of the defense force, the role of the armed citizenry would be what von Clausewitz called "friction" just as it was with the French Resistance.

nothing,
Education != agreeing with you.

BO was proclaimed as the avatar of what you call "education" and "sophistication" and he's shown himself to be a deeply embarrassing incompetent idiot in the international sphere.

Oldefarte| 4.2.09 @ 2:01PM

Outstanding article, Quin! As I've said numerous times, all of this was [or should have been] known prior to 11/4/08. The question/concern is what do we do about it now? Tea parties et al are to Queenburyish and proper, when Democrats operate [and foreverhave been] in gutter of politics. What's needed is to fight them according to their rules, which are no-holes-barred. Conservative-Republicans should, as intelligent, income producing-business owners and individuals, place political pressure on their employees to reject Obamaism/unionism and vote for their own best interests and for conservative-Republican candidates [if they wish to maintain their current employment status]; should begin a tax revolution movement whereby employees submit Federal w-4 forms indicating numerous personal exemptions [and thereby negating any tax withholding by their employers], and subsequently NOT file income tax returns that are due in April each year; should demand by written, oral, etc. form that their state legislators rule conservatively, and should defeat any such state officials who refuse to comply; should defeat the Hollywood liberalism actors/liberal activists by refusing to fianacially support/patronize movies and television programs that are liberal in content; should demand that public school officials cease their secularism agendas and socialistic brainwashing of their children via their hiring practices, teachings, and textbook materials; and demand that our governments begin immediately eliminating/reducing the cradle-to-grave welfare payments made to its recieients and correspondingly demand that current welfare recipients immediately begin to ensure their numerous offspring's applying their every effort and abilities into obtaining an education from their free public schools in order to be able to support themselves and their families going forward. These ideas are just a start. Until conservative-Republicans begin to ACT, instead of just COMPLAINING/TALKING, politicians such as Hitler, Musselini, JFK, and now Obama will continue to be able to brainwash their lemming constituents into submissively obeying their dictates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Liberal Media

Most of the media provides a similar perspective while a small minority provides a very different one. What is more likely?
A) Most people like honestly and so the general media plays to that audience. The minority capitalizes on those radical individuals who prefer soothing half-truths and lies to sometimes disagreeable facts. This minority boosts its legitimacy (and therefore revenue) by repeatedly claiming the majority is engaged in a massive conspiracy.

OR

B) The majority of media really is engaged in a massive conspiracy. They have secret meetings where they plan out their lies and kill babies for fun. The purpose of the massive conspiracy is to ultimately oppress everyone because that's just what being evil is all about.

Iaidoka| 4.2.09 @ 2:06PM

Yes, I'm being pessimistic. But I truly am afraid now, as never before, that the majority of the american public WANTS the government to do everything for them. My confidence in the American people has been shaken to its core. I no longer have that confidence. And I truly am afraid that the majority of the American public is too stupid and/or ignorant to know what government control of everything means.

But mostly, I really hope I'm wrong.

n0thing| 4.2.09 @ 2:11PM

Oldefarte, you propose we stop paying taxes, enforce ideological curriculums in public school, and legalize racism-inspired hiring practices. All this to....prevent these very things from happening?

Yes, that is quite sensible indeed. Thanks for your perspective.

n0thing| 4.2.09 @ 2:16PM

Iaidoka -- no one wants the government to take care of them. Please, put on your honesty cap and ask yourself: Is such a black and white perspective really sensible? Or is it the product of hate-filled opposition?

The USA is free and will continue to be, because the simple-minded fear mongering that has obviously gripped you will never take hold of us all.

But sure...things were better under Republicans who created laws to spy on us and punish us without a trial -- all in the name to make us safer. They weren't taking care of us -- no no. They were making us more free, you see. And Obama's opposition to this, well, it is all part of his grand conspiracy to ruin the world. Yes, indeed.

Also, recovery.gov, which links to local govt websites, is also part of this massive conspiracy. Be afraid...BE VERY AFRAID!

Todd| 4.2.09 @ 2:28PM

Paramater,
Bilwick is referring I believe to Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg, a great book btw. Never heard of Barbarism With a Human Face but sounds interesting.

Nothing,
Appropriate name since you have nothing to say but stupidity. I am sure you are nothing and will always be nothing.

Excellent article from Quin as always, there is indeed many frightening parallels between the cult of personality of Mussolini with Obama with the pervasive desire to control corporations (Corporatism) to meet the desires of the State. It is no secret that the progressives of their time loved Mussolini and to a lesser degree Hitler (Joe Kennedy sure had good things to say about Hitler). Fascism is again rearing its ugly head in the Obama administration and Democrat party in general, attempting to nationalize the banks and GM is just the start of their plans to take complete control of the economy. They will not completely succeed in their nefarious plans but they will do great damage along the way until they lose their grip on power.

stephanie| 4.2.09 @ 2:30PM

Dave,
You're truely a sad individual to say such such ugly things to your fellow Americans. We ARE all in this together and I don't believe for one minute that you want your liberties or freedoms taken away any more than we conservatives do. Do you think they are not being eroded? Surely you are not that naive.
Get with a good anger management group and with it, do some meditation and/or prayer.
You need it.

stephanie| 4.2.09 @ 2:34PM

Son Of Sam~WONDERFUL POST!
You give me hope.

n0thing| 4.2.09 @ 2:40PM

Todd, do you actually believe there is a massive conspiracy going on? Really? You don't seem to like the restrictions Obama has been adding to bailout dollars. Do you propose there should be no restrictions? What do you propose?

You say Obama wants to nationalize the banks and GM, meanwhile most investors agree the possibility of nationalization for all of these entities has subsided. The big three (C, BAC, WFC) have all risen steadily because they are poised to report profits in Q1 2009. Are all of those investors part of the grand conspiracy too?

Aindyin| 4.2.09 @ 2:41PM

Ah yes, I can see it now. David is in his grandmothers basement reclining in his overstuffed obamite infested chair eating taxpayer funded ding dongs and sucking on a Jonestown Koolaid while writing naughty things about conservatives. Boy if this how you act when you when win I would have love to see how you act when you lose. Guess there would have been a pretty big mess in you bat cave for ole granny to flame out.

Bilwick| 4.2.09 @ 2:52PM

Thanks for the helpful tip, nothing. (Is your pseudonym meant to convey your commitment to liberty, or your knowledge of history and economics?) No matter how eerie the growing paralells between "Il Gufe" and Mussolini become (even the same jut-jaw pose) become, those of us who value freedom should say nothing.
You're obviously a man who loves his Big Brother.

n0thing| 4.2.09 @ 2:53PM

That's right, avoid details. They are also part of the conspiracy. Platitudes are all we need in today's modern world.

Oldefarte| 4.2.09 @ 3:02PM

"nothing" , obviously applies to what is between your two ears! I want to STOP the liberalism that NOW EXISTS in the teacher/textbook brainwashing goin on in our taxpayer-funded, free public schools. I want teaching of authenic history about Washington [not Obama!] crossing the Delaware River. Do those racist hiring practices you refer to include those current minority language teachers who proclaim, " I teaches English" ?

Todd| 4.2.09 @ 3:06PM

Nothing,
It is not really a conspiracy since Obama has pretty much told us what he intends to do and his socialist beliefs are well known though he pretends to believe in capitalism. I look at his actions and not his words since his words mean nothing just like you. In case you have not been paying attention, GM has all but been taken over now and Obama has fired their CEO. Bankruptcy has always been the way failed business models have been dealt with in the US, not nationalism but this is a Brave New World under Obama.

Since all the major banks have taken bailout money whether they needed it or not, Obama will hold that over them like a hammer and tell them how much money executives can make or his regulators will ruin them and have them fired. Are you aware that Bank of America did not want to merge with Merrill once they learned the true extent of the damage but were given no choice in the matter? This is nothing less than Corporatism just like Il Duce himself set up in Fascist Italy. But it is all for the good of the people right?

Todd| 4.2.09 @ 3:17PM

What a shocker that Dave is some trust fund moron. I love socialism because I will never have to work a day in my life, what a jackass! The real story is in the names: Hitler's party was named "Deutsche Nazional-Sozialistische Arbeiter Partei" (German National-Socialist Workers Party); Mussolini's party was called "Partito Italiano Socialista (I Fascisti)" or in English "Italian Socialist Party (Fascists)". And the word "Soviet" in the name of the defunct USSR means "community organization". With our Abu Hussein from Kenya who is our Community Organizer-in-Chief and his brownshirts from ACORN we are already there, to a great delight of our house jerk David Mathews.

Nothing

I certainly do not see a "conspiracy". Not in any traditional sense of the word. Lots of like minded people who are pushing for the same thing do not make a conspiracy. But, that makes it no less dangerous. Probably even more so. I have been accused all my life of being an "optimist". For the first time in my life, I see nothing to be optimistic about. The unfortunate fact is that the growth of government power is seldom rolled back without bloodshed. It is generally the youngsters who foment that. Partially in the belief that they will survive it and live to prosper. Us old farts don't have that as a reasonable expectation. Ergo, we are more likely to put our heads down and hope for the best. Too many responsibilities to risk - wife, kids, etc. I see no significant risk of "bloodshed" any time soon because the kids are all on the Obama bandwagon. But our childrens children may have different take on living under a facist style regiem. In short, I am pessimistic because at best it will be two to three generations before all this is can possibly be rolled back. In the meantime, we will all adopt what I recently read as the European philosphy of life, to wit "while away the time as pleasantly as possible".

I hate to agree with a leftist like Mathews, but he is right. The left has won. It's all over. The socialist revolution has been marching forward for the last 45 years, since the 60's. The left is infinitely better organized than the right. These tea parties serve only as a vent for frustraton, but are all smoke and no fire. The GOP lost its way when it caved to the so called Religious Right. Those kooks who are concerned only with abortion, evolution, gay marriage, prayer in schools and other so called social issues. In the meantime we have lost the Republic. The radical left simply laughs at these ineffective stumblebums.

The tragedy is that the intellectual strengths of conservatism and the free market have been marginalized by concerns over meaningless social issues by the emotional and anti intellectual segments that gave us G W Bush and the previous incompetent GOP Congress. In fact, the GOP and Conservatism didn't lose to the left, hell, they surrendered 20 years ago before the conflict really warmed-up. Where were the Tea Parties back in 1988, it's far too late now. Get used to it, we are now and have been for some time a Socialist Country. We were essentially a Selective Socialist form of government that is now accelerating rapidly toward Total Socialism.

"Nem" is correct, we are all Europeans now. Wait until those 80% tax rates begin to be implemented for the entire Middle Class, it's coming as sure as Summer.

Paul Crowley, thanks for your post. Forget gun control, all the government has to do is control availability of ammunition; and Obama recently tried this tactic by attempting to sell scrap metal (meant for creation of bullets) to China, right? Also, you're right about guns being great equalizers for women--I have tried to impress this fact on my daughters since they were young. Thanks for your post, it was very informative.

Concerning liberals like our buddy Dave Matthews, who sounds like the typical 3 year-old name caller is so arrogant and full of venom it must be torture worst than underwear over his head just to exist. It's funny how most of the conservative people I know are college educated business owner's who work for a living at all levels of the work spectrum. They can enter the arena of idea's with true thought and principle rather than childlike name-calling and heralding their absolute ignorance. Many more work hard every day and don't ask their neighbors to support them. More than likely a child of rich parents and probably never worked an honest day in his life because he foolishly believes he is better than everybody else. To blindly follow a populist charlatan and persecute the people who provide the jobs and make this country run only proves further that his sanity should be questioned. Most liberals I now are miserable people who follow a set of beliefs that have no merit. They produce very little beyond their own comfort, never donate to charity, and have not a clue about personal responsibility. Always somebody else's fault. Evil rich this, evil rich that. All the while supporting politicians who are stealing theirs, along with everyone else's hard earned fruits of labor.
Keep it up moron. The only post's I see from liberals across all of these various stories demonstrate the same childlike mentality and only reinforce the fact the liberalism is a mental disorder.

The rest of the G20 decided on 3.9 Trillion a total of 5 Trillion US Dollars, that will make the Banksters happy more debt more taxes, for the slaves to find. Who has ever heard of spending your way out of debt?

If that was possible no one would have lost their jobs or their homes anywhere. This money is going to the IMF, when the IMF takes control of any country in the world it leads one way, what ever your GDP is the IMF gets it. Great idea, but conservatives must at first be educated. That's something your side lacks. Ignorance and idiocy govern the Republican party.

Remember George W. Bush?

I can't argue the George Bush angle as I can't stand him and his ilk...but you painting all conservatives with the same brush is what is
irrational. It is the Democrats that have fallen off the cliff with their political correctness. As a matter of fact, the far left has totally abandoned all logic, reason and common sense to join this group of idiots that celebrate and deny reality as some kind of daily ritual.

I once made a study of the Peron period in Argentina and am amazed (and alarmed) by the many parallels between the programs that Peron undertook between 1945 and 1955 and the destructive result to the economy. And remember, Peron was elected twice in reasonably (by Argentine standards) fair elections.

He empowered the unions and allowed them to make outrageous wage demands. He increased governmental subsidies for businesses, and exercised control over them just like Obama is beginning to do. He expanded welfare and encouraged people to rely on the government. In ten years, he managed to take the second strongest economy in Latin America and wreck it. And he did it by the same route-- government control of big business, big deficits, big subsidies, and big taxes. He continually played the class envy card (los descamisados) and also had a wife who was more radical than he was.

The parallels to Mussolini's Italy is very strong, and the parallels to Peronista politics right on.

It's a waste of time appealing to the mainstream media to do their jobs in a responsible way. As a general proposition, they know they're wrong in their propagandizing for OhBummer and against privately-employed taxpayers ---- and they enjoy being wrong and getting away with it.

It is important to reach over and under and around the mainstream media maggots ---- to the current and future victims of the OhBummer gang and the Democratic party in general ---- much as the 'destroyer' in "Atlas Shrugged" hunted down and liberated the victims of that fictional 'statist' society.

Who are the victims? Anyone required to "sacrifice" to the government one moment of their time or one cent of their treasure. Anyone whom the fascists call "selfish" and of whom they demand the submergence of the individual in the collective mass of society at large.

We know that the market is superior in every respect to government except in the areas of crime, punishment, and national defense --- and even in these areas there is plenty of room for privatization and innovation.

Here is where conservatives and libertarians had better quit with the squabbling and get together to derail the OhBummer gang by whatever means it takes. Let these statists --- whether socialists or fascists ---meet the opposition of glad and uncompromising warriors wherever they turn.

Boycott some big businesses, any of your choice. Have nothing to do with them. Don't take the good or service they offer; don't pay for their goods and services; don't use 'em.

Simultaneously, don't have anything to do with the State. Most importantly, choose not to pay for any of the State's goods or services. In short, don't pay taxes.

Not sure why you take your frustrations out on an ally. I think you do feel helpless, and you should. I applaud you for your new found courage. But, I am a realist, our side no longer has the power to resist our emerging tyrannical central Government. All of your courage and small arms cannot change that balance of power. We don't even have the power of the ballot box to effect change. We now must deal with the Courts, the DOJ and ACORN - there will never be another "free" and fair election in this country. Just look at the current Senate which is being taken over by the left through the courts and the DOJ. Remember it was the Bush DOJ that prosecuted Stevens long enought for him to lose an election. It is the Court giving the recent election to Franken. I don't blame Bush directly, he, like us, was simply powerless over a Dept of Justice taken over by the radical left.

The only true revolution in the country must be led by properly elected State Governors. Governors who still believe in the 10th Amendment must assert States Rights and resist the encroaching power from Washington. But, just look at Sanford in SC, he is trying to resist, but even the people of a conservative state like SC are angry at him because he is not accepting the bribes from Obama's Admin. It's for the children, ya'll know. There can be no real resistance when the majority of the people really desire the Nanny State. You are spitting into the wind when over 43% of tax payers pay no Federal Income Tax and can just wait for their handouts and free stuff. They like this new Socialism; they like Obama's policies. You're forgetting that a) Obama knocked up Bristol Palin

b) Obama is responsible for the global increase in human trafficking over the past five decades.

c) There are rumors that Obama has been involved in intense negotiations with an intergalactic colonial power for the peaceful and orderly hegemonization of the planet by a cohort of Blues and Greys now headquartered in Area 51.

Obama is an evil man; his father was Satan; his mother a White Virgin who was raped then sacrificed by a sleeper cell of insurgent Negro Nazis located in Indiana.

Washington DC. Rumors are circulating the capital today that Michelle Bachmann, the outspoken Republican from MN, is going to announce the secession of her state from the Union. While Bachmann's office has given no official word of the announcement to the press, sources close to her claim that since she has been unable to debunk rumors suggesting the United States would soon convert to an international currency, she and her state will be leaving the Union and declaring war forthwith.

This is not the first time Bachmann has flirted with treason, sources say, and rumors abound that she is in intense negotiations with Todd Palin to join her as the first Premiere of a Federated Midwest Conglomerate of Capitalist Entities.

Hey people, it won't be all that bad if Obama merely wants a US that looks like Europe. I have traveled in Europe extensively, even Russia before Putin. Their form of socialism isn't all that bad. Good food, good drink (love german beer) and , for the most part, content people. Yep, they complained about the very, very high taxes and certainly did not have many of the material goods that the common American has, but didn't seem to suffer from not having four flat panel TV's in their homes, or driving a large SUV to their boat or second home. Hell, they all took advantage of the three week government mandated vacation periods in August-September. There wasn't even much discussion about healthcare or government control of most business decisions (hiring, firing, etc.). Their biggest fault is the failure to control immigration, but we have failed there also.

Gas is very expensive, but, hell, rolling down the Autobonn in a small Audi at 90mph was a gas (and no big potholes to dodge). One good thing is that they have real Socialism there, not the Selective Socialism like we have here in the US. If you think this is Capitalism, you have been brain washed. In Europe everybody pays high taxes, not like the US where 43% pay not Federal taxes at all, what's Capitalistic about that?

The Government confiscates well over 50% of your earnings in the EU, but everybody is provided Government Services of equal value, not just the selected welfare victim class given free stuff as in this country. Even the very wealthy get Government healthcare and share other Government services equally. There is a difference between Wealth Re-distribution being used to punish success and the Euopean model.

I am a Conservative, in fact probably a Libertarian, but since the die is cast I'll sit back and hope that our new Socialist Government can implement its vision as well as they have in Germany. Yes, Russia is a disaster, but improving after their experiment with Communism and then experiencing the Corrupt Capitalism era. Remember, there is a vast difference between true Economic Socialism and the dreams of the radical leftists like and Saul Alinsky. Alinsky and his ilk are not focused on economics, they are focused on hate of accomplishment and of those who have prospered. Theirs is a politics of envy and the desire to "get even". This we must fight. Some form of socialism is inevitable, but we must prevent it from evolving into a system to punish the achiever, individuality and destruction of the entreprenurial class. Remember, BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler aren't going bankrupt, and Siemens is one of the most successful corporations on Earth!

To everyone else:
If you REALLY, honestly want to make a change, do not support the republicans or the democrats for they are both the same -- they just approach how to accomplish the same goals differently, but the results are the same!

I am a proud libertarian -- who believes capitalism is sink or swim under your own power, charity & kidness are good when they come from the heart not forced upon us to do, government does not have a role in our day-to-day lives, etc.

The problem is that most people do not know what they want. Time for people to really think about it and finally stand up for what you belive in...

This was all in many ways very much predicted by Friedrich Nietzsche in the late nineteenth century. After declaring that “God is dead“, Nietzsche wondered what would replace religious belief. His answer was politics. Politics has in fact become the new religion. It started with started with cult-like worship of Il Duce and then moved to figures like Stalin, Hitler, Kim, Castro and so on. Democratic states have seen a different manifestation of this tendency. Political religion takes the form of party and ideology worship – especially, but not entirely with the left.
With postmodernism and post-structuralism truth is now defined through politics. Just look at the global warming debate. This is not a scientific debate but a political debate. The truth of global warming is about political consensus as defined by the IPCC. Once the political process has reached a consensus the debate is over and the truth is declared.
The unfortunate thing is that I see both sides (Democrats and Republicans) falling into the same religio-political trap. They are just warring factions of the same religion fighting over theology –Sunnis against the Shiites.

MT| 4.4.09 @ 3:23PM

MT| 4.4.09 @ 7:20PM

Government grew rapidly after 9/11. You had a problem with George W. trying to protect the country? Bush wasn't power hungry--Conservatives wouldn't tolerate it. Team Obama are liberal fascists; they have a goal and are aggressively pursuing it. No checks or balances there. If you can't discern the difference, I guess there's no point in discussing it.

MT - The difference is one of magnitude not one of principle. Of course the Obama administration is taking a radical turn to the left. And of couse I am concerned with the agenda of the entire Democratic establishment.

But unfortunately, by the way they have governed the last 8 years the Republicans have lost their moral authority to speak against it. Bush did not veto a single bill until the last two years of his administration. And unless I am mistaken the Medicare prescription drug extension was not a homeland security measure. Your allegence seems to be far more to a party than to a principle.

MT| 4.5.09 @ 3:02AM

Alfred, I see that you're 'concerned' about Obama's extreme, leftist policies. Well, maybe you've lost 'your' moral authority to speak out against the liberal fascist, Obama--but I haven't. Of course, maybe you never had any moral authority to begin with: That's your problem. I didn't agree with Bush's policies, and I certainly don't agree with Obama's power grabs. I am gonna yell and scream my outrage and disapproval of Obama's policies all day, every day. Many of my courageous fellow Conservatives agree, and we don't need weak, whiny losers like you in our way. Now, shoo, weenie troll!

Daphne| 4.5.09 @ 3:22AM

Oh, that makes sense: Bush enacted a prescription medicine plan for old people, so Alfred the clown believes we have no right ever again to object to Obama's fascist power grabs; even if he decides to become King Obama for life! Must be a new troll strategy--give Obummer a pass for his extremist policies 'cause old people got a break. Moron.

Jack Bauer| 4.5.09 @ 7:09AM

"And of couse I am concerned with the agenda of the entire Democratic establishment. But unfortunately, by the way they have governed the last 8 years the Republicans have lost their moral authority to speak against it. "

That's a non sequitur. And your second statement makes no sense even standing alone.

If you are really concerned about the Democrat party's extermist socialist, quasdi-Marxian agenda ( headed by el Presidente Benito Obama), what ARE YOU going to do about it given that Ross Perot isn't running for anything?

Apart from seeking to float ridiculous reasons why "Republicans" should do nothing?

Richard Poor| 4.5.09 @ 7:21AM

David Mathews: “It doesn't take a lot of effort to get a bunch of uneducated, talk radio listening conservative idiots scared, does it? The most important sentence in the above article is: ‘as much as that description sounds like U.S. government policy begun under George W. Bush' ... Yeah, the original fascist was George W. Bush."

-You speak of uneducated, yet you show no education; many conservatives appreciate the effort of George W. Bush – yet, that is not to say that they love absolutely everything he ever did.

-Unlike liberal democrats, who blindly follow whoever is in front of them – conservatives have the ability to reason and choose what they like or dislike about a leader within their own party. It is clear that, in the so-called liberal party, is it absolutely forbidden to criticize comrade Obama – however, that is not the case for free-thinking Republicans… and a truly educated man would have understood this without an explanation.

David Mathews: “Blah, blah, insult, blah, insult… The conservatives cannot fight a revolution because… Blah, blah, insult… They aren't intelligent and educated enough to lead a revolution… Armed insurrection is the behavior of domestic terrorists. To Gitmo you people would go if you ever attempted to lead a revolution. Blah, insult, insult…”

-Hmm, apparently you did not get the memo from the office of Chairman Obama, but there is no more “terrorism” per se – remember, in his brilliance, they changed the word to something akin to man-caused-disaster. Moreover, your supreme leader also closed Gitmo as a detention center – so, not only are there no more terrorists in your pink world, but there is no place to put them… if you are going to insult, at least try to keep up… of course, a truly educated man would have understood these without an explanation.

-Amazingly enough, your numerous posts just go downhill from there and I see no point in wasting my time further by pointing out the obvious… In the end, you sound like a baby repeating whatever liberal lie was implanted in your head over and over again. Of course, all you are accomplishing by dong this is to embarrass yourself and your cherished party… a truly educated man would have understood this without an explanation and would have stopped long ago.

Liked the article for pointing out curtailments of economic freedoms under the current administration. These economic policies are similar to the "third way" type of socialism espoused by Mussolini. That's where the comparison should end though. Italian fascists came to and maintained power through violent means. Obama did and does not, we still maintain fundamental freedoms which allow us to change our government peacefully as the founders intended. To overstate comparisons of Obama's policies to those of authoritarian regimes is hyperbole, irrational, and corrosive.

If we are to make comparisons to the past, Obama's style of governance is more akin to the SPD during the Weimar Republic. They too were titled fascists by the KPD (German Communist Party). The KPD's refusal during the Comintern meetings of 28 and 29 to create a coalition government with the SPD (the main supporter of democracy left in Germany) helped the Nazis gain power. Like the SPD and KPD Obama is feckless.

I don't like using the term fascism - especially when connected to Mussolini/Italian Fascism. The reason is that although "fascist" has come to mean simply authoritarian, totalitarian, autocratic, dictatorial, etc; original Fascism had strong, and inseperable, components of nationalism and racism. One could easily argue (and I would) that the "anti-racism" of the Left in America is, in fact, racist - or, that Obama's racism is simply anti-white (a la Rev. Wright); BUT, as far as "Liberal Fascism" goes .... Nationalism ain't in it.

In fact, Anti-Nationalism (i.e., Anti-Americanism) is the rule for the "American" Left, generally -- and especially for the Obama Administration.

As far as the Obama Administration is concerned, distinguishing between authoritarian and totalitarian is a distinction without a difference. It is true that our government is not totalitarian ... YET; but, do not doubt that total control is the goal. Moreover, totalitarianism is not as absolute as it sounds. No totalitarianism can be "totally" complete. Thus, there is either a "greater" or "lesser" degree of achievement of total control. Our government is already far too close to the "greater" side, and far too far from the "lesser"/"least" side advocated by America's Founders. All of American history is the story of the movement from less government control to more government control; hence, from "least" totalitarian to "more" totalitarian. Obama clearly wants to finish the job.
