A Bleak Day

I love this. The new kind of politics of hope.

I love this. The new kind of politics of hope. Eight hours of debate in the HR to pass a bill spending $820 billion, or roughly $102 billion per hour of debate.

Only ten per cent of the "stimulus" to be spent on 2009.

Close to half goes to entities that sponsor or employ or both members of the Service Employees International Union, federal, state, and municipal employee unions, or other Democrat-controlled unions.

This bill is sent to Congress after Obama has been in office for seven days. It is 680 pages long. According to my calculations, not one member of Congress read the entire bill before this vote. Obviously, it would have been impossible, given his schedule, for President Obama to have read the entire bill.

For the amount spent we could have given every unemployed person in the United States roughly $75,000.

We could give every person who had lost a job and is now passing through long-term unemployment of six months or longer roughly $300,000.

There has been pork barrel politics since there has been politics. The scale of this pork is beyond what had ever been imagined before -- and no one can be sure it will actually do much stimulation.

Further, no one can be sure that we are not already at the trough/inflection point of the recession such that this money will be spent mostly after the recovery is well under way.

How long until the debt incurred under this program is so immense that it causes a downgrade in the sovereign debt of the USA? What happens to us then?

This has been a punch in the solar plexus to the kind of responsible, far-seeing, mature government processes that are needed to protect America. This is more than the pork barrel. This is a coup for the constituencies of the party in power and against the idea of a responsible government itself. A bleak day.

Unfortunately, it is only the latest in a long series of such days stretching across decades of rule by both parties, to the point where truly responsible government is only a distant echo of our forgotten ancestors.

One person's "coup for the constituencies of the party in power", is anothers growth industry. Wait, I guess they're one in the same, with Professional Democrats being the beneficiaries.

Kitty| 1.29.09 @ 11:17AM

It's a small consolation, I realize, but at least no Republican voted for this porkubus. This is the sole property of Obama and his cohorts in crime.

You won't find too many Bushies Bushier than me but that is mostly for natsec/GWOT reasons. Those who declared Compassionate Conservatism a dangerous flirtation with soft-headedness are proven right yet again. The problem with the Reps generally is this spinelessness. The House vote is a glimmer... the tiniets glimmer that they may become vertebrates again but it is tough after the premises of Liberalism, basically that anyone white and/or to the right of Walter Mondale is a ravening beast, have been admitted by the Top Guy. That's what CC was, right? An urging to Conservatives to be Compassionate, as if they are not. But many difficult things, even those thought impossible we shall now have to accomplish. Necessity is a mother. Oh yeah.

Pat| 1.29.09 @ 12:14PM

Once again, Conservatives are the victims of their own rationalizations. What did the nation's Conseratives think was gonna happen - and, after all the hints President Obama gave the nation, his Party, upon gaining power, decides to enrich themselves and their political allies. There is no longer any rationalization that supports the illusion this stimulus package is anything other than rewarding the victors. They've gained power, they alone decide who gets "stimulated" and they make no apologies for that fact.

In Hungary, students learn their dismal national history of being repeatedly conquered - first the Magyars out of central Asia, the Poles, the Germans, the Slavs, the Mongols, the Turks and finally the Russians. They all crossed Hungary's borders, looted, raped, stole everything in sight and then eventually left. And they didn't even bestow the gift of good government on the captive Hungarians before departing with their slaves.

Like the Hungarians' assorted conquerors, neither the Democrats nor the Republicans pause long enough to bestow good government before the post-victory looting begins and the process seems to be gaining speed, only a week has elapsed and already the national Treasury is being emptied.

But the long-suffering Hungarians never pretended they thought what their conquerors was doing was right or part of some divine plan. They saw it for what it was and had no illusions about their pitiful submission. If only Conservatives would drop their self-delusion that legal looting by the conquering Party was the original intention of the Founding Fathers and the Constitution.

Robert Rosencrans| 1.29.09 @ 12:34PM

Mr. Stein: In this age of a dumbed down American public, I believe you have a lot of gall expecting members of Congress to actually read a bill before they sign it. That would be an act of personal responsibility and that is an issue that is neither sought or desired in a society that is fragmenting into a retarded plutocracy.

In short, you may have hurt the feelings of members of Congress with that remark, and further, any liberals reading your post might believe that personal responsibility is something to be desired, which might insult them.

I suggest you apologize, not so much because your remarks could be construed as insulting, but mainly because your remarks could be misinterpreted as a slam against irresponsibility which is no longer a desired social effect.

Bryan| 1.29.09 @ 12:40PM

Ben has a finger on a thought when he mentions in his final paragraph where he says "truly responsible government is only a distant echo..."

With a finger of insightfullness himself, a distant echo is heard from, Samuel Adams (SIGNER OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE; "FATHER OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION'; RATIFIER OF THE U.S. CONSTITUTION; GOVERNOR OF MASSACHUSETTES) where he says:

"The name of the Lord (says the Scripture) is a strong tower; thither the righteous flee and are safe [Proverbs 18:10]. Let us secure His favor and He will lead us through the journey of this life and at length receive us to a better."

JOE| 1.29.09 @ 12:42PM

The Left has already begun its spin that the Reps are not acting to fix the mess caused by (primarily) the Dems. Let's hope the Reps have the guts to stand firm, ignore the polls and get communication out to the hinterlands (quickly) to explain to the constituencies exactly why this legislation is a pail of dung.

It HAS to be bad for Ben to be against it. What he needs to do is explain why he was for nationalizing the financial system with the Bailout that FAILED, and will continue to fail every time it's tried. socialism fails, in every form it appears. Riding the fence puts splinters in uncomfortable places, Ben. Walking down the middle of the road gets you run over.

"The Left has already begun its spin that the Reps are not acting to fix the mess caused by (primarily) the Dems".

Griff,
I don't know about you, but I don't get the sense that the Left considers yesterday's vote a victory. The Democrats didn't need one GOP vote. Yet, the MSM isn't talking as if bill's passage was something to celebrate.

Drudge and other outlets have done a good job making available the bill's details. I think the more these details get out to Joe Sixpack, the less likely that even in the Senate will there be any GOP votes for it. Even CNN reporters are talking about the massive amounts of pork, and very little to jump start the economy.

This bill is a travesty that has the potential to damage the Obama admin before it even gets going. His desperately needs 20 GOP Senators to join his majority.

It looks as if the liberal Democrats have accomplished in less than a month what they blamed the Republicans for doing over the last eight years, at least in terms of irresponsible and selfless spending. Instead of the purgative the government needs to "stimulat" we are treated to the "opiate for the masses". Got to pay off those political debts!

Deborah| 1.29.09 @ 2:01PM

The Republicans and 11 Blue Dog Dems did the right thing. Their constituents will remember. We always knew the Dems would overreach once in power...who knew it would be this much this fast? Obama is no longer pretending that he is anything other than a socialist, but don't you dare call him that.

I wonder what "Republicans" such as Christopher Buckley (the prodigal son of William F.) who supported Obama and NYTimes "conservative" columnist David Brooks -- who thought The One was so intellectual, but was afraid of Sarah Palin--think now. What kind of country do you two smart guys want, huh? Well, if it wasn't socialist then you guys have egg on your faces about now. Why should any Republican or conservative listen to you guys?

i'm pretty confident that once the country sees how incredibly ineffective this "stimulus" bill is at stimulating anything but the democrats' loyal special interest groups, the hammer of public opinion will fall unmercifully upon the Chosen One.

THE INDIANS LAND| 1.29.09 @ 5:13PM

What if, this problem is created, and it was created by people who you think are friends of America, who really hate American culture, and every thing about this arrogant State.

Perhaps this crisis was created to destroy a society of the most evil people. Perhaps they think America should go back to the people who truely love the land, and value nature, like the RED INDIANS did. The imposters who term themselves as Americans have no values or morality, it is possible that the world wants you gone. What did America look like when the true people of the land owned it, it was heaven, and these PAGANS have turned beauty into hell.

Google Indian Dream sacred spirit.

The spirit of these people have come back to destroy you with forest fires, and fisical problems, the spirit of the dead slaves, and the spirit of the dead around the world have come back to kill you with famine disease, poverty, confusion, stupidity, homelessness, joblessness. And economic failure, and eventual extintion.

THE CAKE IS A LIE| 1.29.09 @ 6:03PM

And we all know the Indians never fought wars with other tribes, killed people and had taken slaves from other tribes...

Karcarius| 1.29.09 @ 6:25PM

Republicans know this isn't going to work that's why they voted no on it.Obama can get a bill passed without them but he wanted their vote because I think he even knows it won't work. And when it doesn't he wanted to say well the reps voted for it too and try to pin it on them. They already voted the first $850 billion and I think they learned their lesson.Businesses need to fail to open the doors for ones that won't make the same mistakes they made. It's the economy's way of weeding out the non-hackers.

Jimmy Otis| 1.29.09 @ 6:57PM

A blunt assessment would be to label this monstrosity "The Democrat Party Reelection Fund" because of the targeting of key Democrat unions and "non-profits" like ACORN and the timing of when the primary bulk of the bill would kick in during the 2009 midterm elections and the run up to the 2012 reelection efforts.

There is almost nothing in this bill that is stimulating. and as it becomes clear how this is clearly a payoff to those that helped elect Obama and Co. there will be a drop off of support from the middle-to-left voters that helped put him over the top.

keith| 1.29.09 @ 7:23PM

The Americans have long since abandoned federalism, and it seems most lack even the understanding as to what federalism is, how to maintain it, and why it was worth having. Moreover, I don't know if anyone knows how to restore a government as a federal order after it has decayed, first into a national government and then into a deranged national government.

Heavens know what I will think tomorrow, but tonight, I think you may just be doomed. In that case I may have the misfortune to be doomed along with you, but the good fortune to get to watch the collapse.

leatherhelmet| 1.29.09 @ 10:07PM

Proposing this unimmaginable amount of money to be turned loose into the hands of these people that have never had a real job is just about the biggest nightmare I can think of. For people like me that have always had to work hard to achieve what they have in life, and to watch this display of super inflated proposed distribution of finances, is beyond my comprehension.

$56 TRILLION BEBT| 1.29.09 @ 10:55PM

This is one of the mostd difficult time in HISTORY, this is not an ordinary RECESSION.
The first thin one has to realise, what the government tells you is not the real facts, till you can understand that you are getting no where.

This GOLBAL collapse is not a coinccident, it's by design. The whole idea of printing money and giving it to banks, that is to cover for the national debt owed by the people, in loans and so on.

Stage two, is to keep the economy going till they do the switch over to the AMERO, so this is called the transitional phase.

The fact is the government cannot tell the people what is going on.

You will ask the question why does it affect the rest of the world, it does because all the banking system operate togeather, the rest of the world leaders knows this. The rest of the world is planning on which currency will be the leading one of the future, what they need is a stable currency. My bet is it will be the Euro, that is what I think.

The war in Iraq had nothing to do with what the Government says, none of it is true.

One if Saddam got his way to sell oil in Euros, where would America get the foreign currency to buy the oil to keep it's economy going, it would mean borrowing from Europe, and no one would lend them the money, because America has no means of paying the money back.

Americans I am sorry but the most part is Americans do not know what is going on in their own country, because they do not get the real news. The people America thinks are their ally, are not the ally they think they are, ones who control the media is not a friend of Americans, if they were you would know what I am saying is true.

America is a powerfull country, in armed forces, it has 300 million people, but most of them don't know what is going on. America is a great market for the rest of the world because of numbers of people to sell to. But here is the problem, what is America selling to the rest of the world? America is the biggest consumer of oil and gas.

The next problem is America is the biggest consumer of manufactured goods from China, what does America sell to China?
So for every $10.00 America generate $9.50 goes to the Arab world and China the next $0.50 goes to paying America debt to the rest of the world and the $0.50 cents is not enough, so America has to borrow more money just to provide Petrol for industry cars, paying for basic items imported from China.

America had Hollywood, and the music industry but it's not enough to run a huge economy. Then there is TAX which has to be paid to the Bank, so the bank wanted their money back, then there was the war.

The American economy is BROKE, put it another way BANKRUPT. The size of Americas debt is enough to BANKRUPT THE WORLD.

ICELAND is BANKRUPT, BRITAIN is the next to go down then FRANCE, GREECE, ITALY.
This is very very serious, this is not a petty RECESSION like the 1929 crash it has no resembelance. The Banks is holding on to collect the bebt in America in housing businesses, credit card debts, any kinds of debts once they have theyr money back in full, you may see a change.

How can you get change till you know the full amount of money America owes the rest of the world in debts, you have no clue. The last time I heard it was a total of 56 TRILLION, so is there an end to this.

America is spending money it does not have. Every one in America is in debt to the system, it's not money you borrowed but money the government borowed on the nations account. Most people are proud Americans, fine but you also have to accept you voted in people that were not responsible to govern your country and there is a price to pay and this is it. We are all in it togeather, each person has to think of a way out.

no surprise| 1.29.09 @ 11:09PM

ANARCHY 2009 - 2010| 1.30.09 @ 12:34AM

America is in GRAVE DANGER, it's nothing to do with OBAMA, the problem has been there for the last 60 years and growing.

The ECONOMY is far far worse than OBAMA can convey.

The Army will have to control the people when the news finally get through to the people, by that time WALL STREET will be empty because that is going to be burned down.

People in Washington DC have their plan to go into hiding, because that may be burned down.

How do you tell people the whole country has no money, has nothing to buy oil, nothing to pay for food to get to the shops, and even if food got to the shops people have no money to pay for it.

The Armed forces has to be deployed to fire on the American citizens. Your own Army which your own taxes pay their wages is now killing their own citizens.

If most Americans knew the true reality they would leave America now before it's too late, but the reality is it is already too late for the vast majority of us.

America is a ticking time bomb waiting to blow, and it will. The whole of FRANCE is on strike on 3oth Jan. And Greece have been having civil unrest for the last two months Iceland is Broke and the Government was forced to resign.

Britain will be the next to go cap in hand to the IMF. Anyone saying this is like the 1929 RECESSION is not being honest.

Call it the Largest Pork barrel created by private sector - It’s official: your suspicions of Wall Street greed have been confirmed. Despite last year’s huge losses, multibillion-dollar bailouts and closings of some of the biggest names in the industry, Wall Street still gave out an estimated $18.4 billion in bonuses. Indeed, last year’s bonuses were the sixth-largest on record.

I say they should be taxed retroactively and simply forced to pay this money back.

Back in 1990, the Government seized the Mustang Ranch brothel in Nevada for tax evasion and, as required by law, tried to run it. They failed and it closed. Now we are trusting the economy of our country and our banking system
to the same nit-wits who couldn't make money running a whore house and selling whiskey.

Repubs had the majority in the House and Senate for 12 of the last 14 years and the White House 8 of the last 8. During that time, very little got done, very little got regulated, 16 million more illegals walked in than out, lobbyist bought and paid for the best government money can buy and a really nice old war hero who tried to please everybody in the political middle ran for President and only missed winning by 4%.
35,000 registered lobbyists in Washington DC.
And now, the Dems are going to pay for their win. Not unlike the way the Repubs paid for everything the lobbiest paid the Repubs.

Poptropica cheats

The poptropica island has been in the news lately after it was revealed that they would be beginning a special ‘reality tv’ project – inside the virtual world. Contestants in a variety of online games will be selected from the players of the virtual game, and be taken by helicopter to a special zone where they can compete for prizes, as well as to become the King or Queen of the island.

The virtual online games will be available to all users of the game from today, although they have been used by ‘Members’ of the community for the last three weeks. Memebership of poptropica costs a small amount per month, but allows users to take advantage of a range of offers and special deals which are not usually available. Paying doesn’t allow access to any poptropica cheats though!
