ACORN's Stimulus

Is this an economic recovery package or a bailout for liberal groups?

With a new president ensconced in the White House, it's time to roll out the goodies for loyal supporters in left-of-center political advocacy groups such as ACORN.

The latest economic stimulus bill promises to do just that by providing a huge bailout --up to $5.2 billion in taxpayer funds -- for some of the same liberal groups that helped get Barack Obama elected.

The three relevant fiscal provisions are buried deep in the $825 billion monstrosity known as the proposed "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009."

Title XII of the spending legislation backed by the Democratic congressional leadership and the Obama administration would dole out $1 billion in old-fashioned slush funds for the Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) program. Local politicians love CDBG because it is flexible. The program gives them wide latitude when spending grant money and allows local leaders to use federal dollars on local projects that they wouldn't dream of spending their own local tax dollars on. ACORN loves CDBG because it is adept at lobbying for CDBG funds.

A separate $10 million is provided in the stimulus package to develop or rehabilitate low-income housing under the Self-Help and Assisted Homeownership Opportunity Program (SHOP).

But the biggest chunk of the $5.2 billion comes in the form of $4.19 billion for foreclosure relief through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

Although ACORN operatives usually get their hands on such funds only after they have first passed through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development or state and local governments, the new spending bill largely eliminates these dawdling middle men, making it easier to get Uncle Sam's largess directly into the hands of the same people who run ACORN's various vote fraud and extortion rackets. And the legislative package provides these funds without the usual prohibition on using government money for lobbying or political activities.

The current version of the stimulus package would allow nonprofit groups to compete with states and localities for $3.44 billion from the $4.19 billion Neighborhood Stabilization Program allocation. The remaining $750 million from the program plus the $10 million in SHOP funds would be set aside exclusively for nonprofit groups.

Probably chief among the groups to benefit from stimulus spending will be ACORN, the infamous network of 100-plus left-wing activist groups.

As everyone who hasn't been in a coma for the last year knows, ACORN and President Obama go way back.

You may remember in October when ACORN's CEO, "chief organizer" Bertha Lewis, appeared in a YouTube video in front of a banner reading "Working Families Party: Fighting for Jobs and Justice," and endorsed Obama for president. (The Working Families Party, a minor New York party, is an ACORN affiliate.) This plea to voters eliminated any doubts that the most diehard benefit-of-the-doubt-giving ACORN supporters may have been harboring that ACORN's voter-registration and get-out-the-vote drives were aimed at getting conservatives and Republicans to the polls.

ACORN's national political action committee, ACORN Votes, also endorsed Obama. ACORN national president Maude Hurd said Obama was "the candidate who best understands and can affect change on the issues ACORN cares about like stopping foreclosures."

You may also remember that during last year's primaries, the Obama campaign paid $832,598 to Citizens Services Inc., another ACORN affiliate, for get-out-the-vote activities. It's also well known that Obama led a voter drive for ACORN affiliate Project Vote, represented ACORN in court, and lectured at ACORN on organizing techniques.

Then-candidate Obama promised a gathering of community organizers in December 2007 that he would involve them in the policy process. "Before I even get inaugurated, during the transition, we're going to be calling all of you in to help us shape the agenda. We're going to be having meetings all across the country with community organizations so that you have input into the agenda for the next presidency of the United States of America."

Apparently President Obama is a man of his word.

What a bunch of hypocritical mother*&^fi#.

Hal| 2.27.10 @ 10:14PM

The idiocy of this comment is mind boggling. A tax cut allows the people who earned the money to keep it. It is not anyone 'giving' anything to anyone. When taking money from one person to 'give' it to another, it should properly be called robbery.

worddust| 7.5.10 @ 1:13PM

This is the kind of thinking that will start the next civil war. My wife and I earn $115,00 annually working over 70 hours each. Her entire $65,000 annual salary pays our local, state and federal taxes leaving my $50,000 to pay for everything that professional welfare "families" get for free. Homie don't plat that! I am armed and ready to stop the theft of my childrens future. Call me all the profane names you want to, after your Commiecrats bankrupt the Country I will survive and you can eat your anger.

As a member of ACORN 8 ,a group that was on the inside of ACORN until we asked to see the books and to get information about the more than 200 groups who are under the ACORN umbrella. When we asked and demanded answer the staff organized the members and lead a drive to get rid of us. The actionwas not done according to any criteria. Knowing what I know, I plan to contact my elected leaders and ask that they stop the unclean hands of the organization

JWWright| 1.27.09 @ 4:46PM

ACORN, with the open support of trusted elected officials and trusted news outlets, committed bold voter fraud in a highly coordinated, organised manner.

ACORN should be eradicated as an organised crime entity, not rewarded for their crimes with millions of our hard earned dollars!

How does paying them off stimulate the economy, again?

Peter McGrath| 1.27.09 @ 5:48PM

The goal is not to stimulate the economy, but to create a permanent Democratic majority. This is accomplished through lobbying, paying off constituent groups, fundraising for Democrats in power and those seeking power, and voter fraud.

Keeping the economony in the tank will help stimulate the burdgeoning Democratic majority because of the large numbers of voters who will come to depend on benefits for subsistence. The attitude of the gentleman calling himself the "Wrestler" (above), is emblematic of what the left is trying to achieve: a nation of poltroons (i.e., resentful cowards) who equate income earned - and allowed to be kept - by "the rich" with benefits bestowed upon "the poor." This destructive mentality is akin to an illness where the payoff for resentment of those who are "better off" is increased benefits for those who deem themselves less better off. The latter, of course, are the ill-informed, government school matriculated rabble the Democrats call "their base."

Didn't Obama clearly state that he wanted to review all programs and those that worked fine but does that didn't he would get rid of.

Well Acorn clearly demonstrated in 2008 that it cannot contain the rampant fraud being committed within its ranks.

Granted they helped get Obama elected in some key states but now I call on Obama to throw them overboard for their corrupt and illegal actions.

At the very least they should get no more public funding and be investigated by a special prosecutor.

This is Obama's big chance to rise above politics as usual and throw a corrupt organization under the bus and show the world that he will not tolerate corruption even with political soul mates.

ACORN (Association of Communist Organizers for Revolution Now) apparently operates on the "blind squirrel" method of voter registration. By repeatedly registering every man, woman, child, and dog, whether living, dead, imaginary, or otherwise, they will eventually find one eligible voter.

jcharles| 1.28.09 @ 3:50AM

$5B to Acorn and affiliates will get distributed to low income inter-city people. So the woman who said all her troubles are over because Obama will pay her mortgage, and car payments was right. She knew this money was coming and she would get a piece of the pie.

It's the generation after mine (and the one after that) that will have to pay for this ridiculous "stimulus," and in more ways than one. All the young voters who went ga-ga over Obama, you've just sealed the deal on the future of this country. Yours will be the first generation in this country not to improve on your parents'. The "change" you voted for is called "socialism." Go look it up in the dictionary as I'm sure you were never taught about it in your government school.

Don L| 1.28.09 @ 7:15AM

Gee wrestler: You fail to understand the most elementary economics (liberals vomit at the word profit -which affords them jobs) When we get a tax cut we don't get money from the gov't (Obama will reverse this) we merely get to keep our own (such evil huh?) and if we get it from the gov't -we send them $3 and get $1 back (they use $2 to buy votes from the economically ignorant)

The Big Lie comes to America. This will no more stimulate the economy than that picture some time back of Rosie O'Donuts hanging upside down stimulated me.
The truth is simple, this is designed purely and simply to entrench the socialist state. In essence a bloodless coup powered by creating and exploiting a crisis. And now I see this morning that the new brown shirts are once again going to attempt to shut down any dissent (I thought that was the highest form of patriotism?) with a "petition" to express their outrage at Rush Limbaugh. Well count me among the outraged, but I won't be signing their fascist petition. No, I will be exercising my freedom of speech and dissent. How many petitions will it take to shut us all down?

END TIMES| 1.28.09 @ 10:21AM

It's obvious that some people would prefer the economy stay in the mess it's in.

How about just let the market find it's own levels, if your company is going to go bust, just leave it to market forces. If you lose your job it's just bad luck.

When people are losing their jobs, they don't suddenly decide to buy a new car, or buy a new house, or buy new items for the house they may not have because they can't pay their mortgage.

If the money in circulation is finite, with no stimulus package how do you acheive new growth? there was a time when new foreign investment would work but the world is in the same mess. The wise would do a study to discover how this happend, but there are too many who feel they know the poor brought down the global economy.

It may be a surprise to many, the very poorest people in the world does not live in the west they live in the third world in shacks. What part did the poor really play in this, the fact is none.

If people have jobs, they pay their mortgage, if they have no jobs they can't pay. Companies go bust when people have no money to spend, and those who are smart hold on to their money, and put it in safe places, at the moment Banks are not safe. Banks are covering themself from bad debts, so they don't lend, because if they do lend money how long will those people have their jobs for?.

So what does the government do, they borrow to invest, but what they invest in is very important it has to be long term projects. The best ones are the ones that generate wealth. Things that can be sold to other countries as well.

China made things and sold it to Americans, because they could make items cheaply, with cheap labour. So where is Americas money it is in china's reserve Banks, so will China be spending that money buying anything from America? the answer to that is no, because America was not manufacturing anything that China wants. That created an imbalance in trade in America and the rest of the world.

The only companies who are not losing jobs is the ARMS industries around the world. They sell Arms world wide. The obvious thing is to have growth in your economy and the ability to trade with the rest of the world.

The ones who are worried about ACORN forget it, that is not the problem, the problem is about how we trade with the rest of the world.

The New One World Order, creates a one world problem, and nothing more. The people who profit from a one world order are the ones at the top, and countries go broke and then they own the people and the countries around the world. Eventually they will need less people, and the world needs less goods, less homes because you the people would either have starved to death, or the people would have been frozen to death because you have no where to live. There is the prospects of people fighting over what little is left, which is good for the one thriving trade the ARMS industries.

The government knows this, but they want to get rid of people because there are too many people on the planet. The way the rich shot animals is how people and their countries will be destroyed.
Animals become extint, and whole race of people will become extint, there will be chemical and Biological war on countries.

Less money will result in less health care for people, because it has to be paid for, if you are not working you can't afford health care, so you die. If you live no where you die, if you have no money to buy food you die. The issue is not about Government it is about you, and how you fight back, you are fighting for the survival of not just yourself but the future and that of your children, children.

The best answer is find ways of growing your own food, and making things you would normally buy, go for renewable energy, find ways of filtering your own water supplies, stay as healthy as you can. If you have land grow food on it, so you are able to feed your self, keep a few chickens. You can team up with others to produce food, and shair it. And be carefull what you think is true look for the facts.

Heartlander| 1.28.09 @ 10:24AM

It is as if the Democrats think that the only way they can get elected is by stealing the election.

Every State where there is a non-Democrat majority should investigate ACORN to the fullest extent of the law, lest they too, lose their democratic republican form of government.

Institute the purple fingers to insure only one vote per citizen.

Investigate ALL absentee ballots prior to opening them to make sure that they are real people, citizens of voting age, still alive, and non-felons. Further validate that they did not also vote on election day. In Minnesota, college students were bussed to vote multiple times for Franken, and prisoners were assisted in illegally voting for Franken.

Secretaries of State put in office by Soros' funded operations should be investigated to the full extent of the law, and if found guilty of voter fraud (as in Minnesota) should be impeached and face justice.

Tim| 1.28.09 @ 10:50AM

Perhaps what needs to happen in the 2010 congressional elections is that we allow thousands of nuetral observers to be stationed at the American voting polls to insure that no hanky panky is going on on either side.

I suggest we import these nuetral election observers from Iraq.......and recruit the "purple finger" lovers of democracy to come do the job.

The far left can't object because:

1. These are people of color.

2. many will be women of color.

3. These Iraq observers will insist that the one vote one person rule be strictly followed.

Of course this means that groups like Acorn will have to be outlawed.

As for myself ,I'm so sick and tired of whats going on like most everybody else . Just why do
OUR employees in Washington believe so strongly that they know whats best for us . Well
they don't ,but they know whats good for them.
Pelosi should be in jail for going overseas and acting as a representative of our country. That is not her role. Pelosi . Reid and Frank should be brought up on charges of treason, sabotage, coersion, misconduct and abuse of power. All have profited from thier conduct in office. These people in government do what ever they want.
They get paid the rest of their life ,have great insurance , all kinds of tax breaks, offshore bank accounts , pass bills where alot of the money ends up in thier own pocket. It's not just Democrats but also Republcans.Oh yeah ,this great country of ours was not founded as a democracy but as a republic where all citizens will be REPRESENTED.I believe the system needs to change . Each state should have 3 federal gov. representatives. No state should have more than any other. The States should be more governed on thier own . Of course we do need a central government for all the states. Also the states should have control of paying and how much money the representative makes. There should be some sort of term limits . Look at Ted Kennedy . Now thats a good reason for term limits. But in this day and age we do not need big government. We the people , with our technology should decide what is good for us. I'll
sign up for a voters card . Who ever votes is suppose to register anyway and to be checked at polling booths. And having it done eletronicly
it would be able to show up if theres any type of fraud. No more hanging chads. Or finding a box of votes in the back seat of an automobile.
Some states do have the right and ability to remove its self from the Union . Texas I know for sure and maybe Alaska . Texas can be self sufficient .Texas has oil, farm land ,ports, logging,
cattle, and is bigger than alot of countries. The people also have a great deal of pride and loyalty.
So does the state of Alaska. But they have fishing, polar bears, moose, and a HUGE amount of oil. I could go on forever but this is enough for
now.
No matter what we do oil will always be needed

The ad seeks applicants to fill the position of “Public Affairs Special Projects Coordinator”. The URL and text of the ad are as follows:

A national association representing county governments is seeking a Public Affairs Special Projects Coordinator to work on two projects. One project seeks to reestablish a partnership between the federal government and America’s counties. The second will focus on developing a national strategy for combating anti-government/anti-tax efforts. The ideal candidate should have knowledge of county, state and federal governmental structure and interrelationships; experience at the federal or congressional level; experience running issue or public service campaigns; and excellent oral and written communication skills.

Obama's community organizing -- you -- would somebody tell me what the stimulus is in that?" Limbaugh continued: "Oh, it's not called 'ACORN,' it's called 'neighborhood stabilization programs.' Now, would somebody explain to me what in the name of Sam Hill ... $4.19 billion to a voter-fraud organization has to do with stimulus?"

In fact, the bill contains no language mentioning ACORN. The false claim is based on a misrepresentation of a provision that would appropriate $4,190,000,000 "for neighborhood stabilization activities related to emergency assistance for the redevelopment of abandoned and foreclosed homes as authorized under division B, title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008." The provision requires that money will be distributed through competitive processes.

It is not the proper role of the US federal government to stimulate the economy by giving money to businesses, volunteer groups, churches, or anything else. The proper way for the feds to stimulate the economy is to stop taxing and regulating it to death.

Now Obama has done what I saw coming long time ago - after he bought the banks, he set the salaries on the CEO's. They lost their freedom, and so will everyone else who bites the Apple of Socialism.

It appears that the moral majority finds themselves playing partisan politics.
Both put on an argument, distracting from the truth. Smoke and mirrors cloud the fact that we have been duped by Politics in general. Sure there is genuine public servants among them, but their numbers are not sufficient to overcome the power of the machine.
I feel anguish for those people I run into every day that don't have a clue, and wont until it is to late.
Our fate is in their hands. Im not optomistic.

ACORN, the right's bogeyman. They are one of THOUSANDS of entities that make use of CDBG. Most of the funds are spent directly by local governments. The CDBG program is structured to allow many different uses (hence the term "block grant") but the vast majority of the funds (including the $1 billion in the House bill that you call the "slush fund") are for the formula program, which distributes to big cities and states (which in turn uses it in the smaller, more rural areas).

In Texas, which gets around $70 million each year in CDBG, 90% of the funds are spent on water and wastewater infrastructure in rural areas and small cities (it's been that way since 1981 when the state began administering CDBG). The funds are matched by the local governments and often supplement loans or other more expensive funding sources.

Anyway, I know many folks would rather throw the baby out with the bathwater but it might help if you actually knew some facts first.

You know what's amazing? ACORN's statement at the bottom of their "About" page states that "ACORN is a non-profit, non-partisan social justice organization with national headquarters in New York, New Orleans and Washington, D.C."

Just like the rest of the Democratic party...they can lie and lie and lie to the American public (i.e. there's no "pork" in the stimulus package) and the nation falls for it each and every time. ACORN is by far anything BUT non-partisan. Hell, they got Obama elected through massive voter fraud. Didn't see them do that for Bush now did ya?

And now I see this morning that the new brown shirts are once again going to attempt to shut down any dissent (I thought that was the highest form of patriotism?) with a "petition" to express their outrage at Rush Limbaugh.easybookmark

Just how is that supposed to help the American economy? Or is it the nail in the coffin of democracy.

It is scary that we rarely hear about the disceit and dishonest behavior that goes on in our government. Our media does an excellent job of ignoring the truth. Yet I have heard hours upon hours of news bashing a plumber named Joe, and a Vice President nominees young daughter. How sad that our country has come to this.
