My friend Jay Swiatek, the greatest horse racing enthusiast I know, sent me this message the day before the Kentucky Derby:
Here’s my trifecta (box it, so they finish in any order).
• Midnight Interlude
• Mucho Macho Man
Longshot: Animal Kingdom
The day before that, he mentioned Shackleford as one of his top five picks. (Actually, he predicted him exactly fourth.)
Here, specifically, is what he wrote about Nehro:
While most of the other horses will be in a mob down the stretch, running as if fit with cement shoes, Nehro will be charging again… and second again.
About Mucho Macho Man, he wrote: Get out on the floor, do the dance: “Mucho Macho Man… I want to be a Macho!” Form the number three.
So it’s time to give Swiatek credit. His special longshot pick, Animal Kingdom, won. The horse he picked to finish second, Nehro, did finish second. The horses he picked for third and fourth, Mucho Macho Man and Shackleford, finished exactly third and fourth. (His only miss was in thinking Midnight Interlude would be close; he was 16th.)
Anyway, many congratulations to Swiatek, who is a good and faithful AmSpec reader. Maybe I’ll start calling him Swiatek the Swami.
(As for my horse, ArchArchArch, he pulled up lame with a minor leg fracture. Bad luck.)
