Santorum: Obama Beats Etch-a-Sketch
by

Rick Santorum suggested that voters might choose Barack Obama over Obama Lite. The comments come as respected Republican elders, including Jeb Bush and even the conservative Jim DeMint, have begun to suggest that a failure to coalesce around Mitt Romney will ultimately help Obama. Romney hit back in a statement, “I was disappointed to hear that Rick Santorum would rather have Barack Obama as president than a Republican.”

Not so fast, says Matt Lewis. Lewis argues that Santorum was speaking of a possible voter reaction to an Obama-Romney race, not his own personal preferences. Here is the full Santorum quote:

You win by giving people a choice. You win by giving people the opportunity to see a different vision for our country, not someone who’s just going to be a little different than the person in there. If you’re going to be a little different, we might as well stay with what we have instead of taking a risk with what may be the Etch A Sketch candidate of the future.

Santorum is expected to win Louisiana Saturday. We’ll see what impact that has on calls for Republicans to unite around Romney as the nominee.
