It won’t surprise anyone to learn that I think Paul Ryan made the right call. He’s especially right here: “Ryan has hoped that he might play the role of Jack Kemp to the next Ronald Reagan.”
That strikes me as exactly the role Ryan needs to play, and that his many admirers on the right are trying to shoehorn him into one for which he is not ideally suited. Kemp had similar admirers — I was one — and he has a better legacy from the House than from his 1988 and 1996 national campaigns. Imagine if Kemp had run before Kemp-Roth was even enacted.
Ryan will contribute to the movement for a more responsible fiscal policy for years to come.
