BOSTON — The crowd circled around the televisions at the Copley Westin. Drinking $9 beer, young men were saying, “C’mon, c’mon,” as Fox News said that Virginia was too close to call. The networks reported a late surge for Ron Paul. Then, when the news broke that Mitt Romney had defeated Paul, the crowd erupted into cheers. Numbers then flashed on the television screen showing Vermont too close to call. Exit polls showed Paul winning 41 percent of independents there. “Wackos,” said a Romney supporter. “That state is full of wackos.” Fox News is now projecting that Romney will also win Vermont.
