Less than one out of three Americans have a favorable view of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to Gallup — the lowest ever recorded by the polling firm.
The latest poll shows her approval rating at just 29 percent, with 56 percent having an unfavorable view of her. When she became speaker, her ratings were 2-to-1 positive, with 44 percent having a favorable view and just 22 percent having an unfavorable view.
Pelosi fares even worse among independents, just 21 percent of whom have a favorable view of her.
Back in 2006, weeks before the Democrats retook Congress, I remember hearing Newt Gingrich argue that Republicans needed to run a campaign against Nancy Pelosi’s liberal San Francisco values. But that was actually a hopeless strategy at that point, because very few people even knew who Pelosi was. However, now that she’s a much more recognized — and unpopular figure — the prospect of firing Pelosi is sure to provide a boost to Republican candidates.
