As violence erupted in Central America, thousands of people fled to the U.S.-Mexico border, crossing into Texas, California, and Arizona. This crisis has sparked ire on both sides of the political aisle. The president, however, has refused to even visit the border. He called such a visit a “photo op”:

“Nothing has taken place down there that I’m not intimately aware of,” Obama said during a hastily arranged news conference here, where he began a two-day visit to the state for Democratic fundraising and an economic event. “This is not theater.”

Funny, considering that the president laughed his way through a meeting with Governor Rick Perry about this, as the president put it, “humanitarian crisis.” Later on, a Texas fundraiser turned into a complete and total photo op, with pictures of the president playing pool, drinking beer, and posing with a statue. This is not the first time that the president has taken off and ignored a crisis: remember Egypt, Benghazi, and Israel, with golf trips, fundraisers, and vacations? Of course, one wonders how much this is costing the taxpayers, but as another famous leader said, “Let them eat cake.”

It has gotten so bad for the president that even members of his own party have been begging for him to visit the border, like Congressman Henry Cuellar and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer. Cuellar has even gotten angry phone calls from the White House, but downplayed them.

This is a humanitarian crisis, and Americans are known as the most generous, caring, and giving people in the world. This time we need to look to an example that has been set by none other than Glenn Beck, founder of the Blaze. According his website:

Glenn Beck on Tuesday announced that he will be bringing tractor-trailers full of food, water, teddy bears and soccer balls to McAllen, Texas on July 19 as a way to help care for some of the roughly 60,000 underage refugees who have crossed into America illegally in 2014.

He isn’t alone in this endeavor: “Beck said he will be joined by Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah), Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), and a number of pastors and rabbis.”

When asked about his charity Beck said:

Through no fault of their own, they are caught in political crossfire. And while we continue to put pressure on Washington and change its course of lawlessness, we must also help. It is not either, or. It is both. We have to be active in the political game, and we must open our hearts.

To be open and charitable in a time of crisis, with private support rather than government action, Beck has found the answer to making conservatives look more humane. This is the complete opposite of the president, who is too busy apparently palling around with donors.

One can be for charitable works yet against amnesty. Beck is neither a sellout nor lawless; he is upholding the Christian ideals on which the country was founded. Just take it from the Statue of Liberty:

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
