Michelle Obama Refuses To Wear Headscarf in Saudi Arabia

Yesterday, President Obama and his wife Michelle attended the funeral of Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah. And while most of the delegation – of all dudes – that met them in the nation’s capital was clad in the traditional funeral black (though not the President, who wore navy blue), Michelle Obama dressed in a festive electric blue blouse and patterned coat over pants. And she refused to don the country’s requisite headscarf designed to prevent her male compatriots from staring lustily at her hair.

And I have to say, I think the outfit was not only perfect. It was just awesome.

Joining President Barack Obama for a condolence visit after the death of the King Abdullah, Mrs. Obama stepped off of Air Force One wearing long pants and a long, brightly colored jacket — but no headscarf.

Under the kingdom’s strict dress code for women, Saudi females are required to wear a headscarf and loose, black robes in public. Most women in Saudi Arabia cover their hair and face with a veil known as the niqab. But covering one’s head is not required for foreigners, and some Western women choose to forego the headscarf while in Saudi Arabia.

As a delegation of dozens of Saudi officials — all men — greeted the Obamas in Riyadh, some shook hands with Mrs. Obama. Others avoided a handshake but acknowledged the first lady with a nod as they passed by.

For the most part, American feminists, who are all too happy to gripe about, the inherent aggression of spreading your knees too far apart on public transportation, have been loathe to take on real threats to women across the globe, like Saudi Arabia’s oppressive scheme of gender-based laws that prevent women from driving, that require women to get permission from male relatives before traveling, and force women to have an escort when going out in public, among other things. The late Saudi King, whose life the Obama’s were in Saudi Arabia to fete, kept his three daughters imprisoned in their palace quarters for daring to speak out against the regular practice of throwing women into mental wards for seeking help in abusive marriages.

And although American women, specifically Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush, have also refused to wear the headscarf in Saudi Arabia, Michelle Obama’s refusal carries with it an impact on exactly the right people. Which is probably why Saudi television blurred her out of their coverage.
