Packing the Supreme Court with four leftist justices.
Expanding the U.S. Senate to add four Democratic senators by making states out of Democratic Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Abolishing the filibuster.
Abolishing the police.
Abolishing the Second Amendment.
Effectively abolishing the southern border of the United States and replacing it with an “open borders” policy designed to provide the Democratic Party with a permanent majority by turning red states blue.
Pressuring TV broadcasters to deplatform conservative cable networks.
Fighting election integrity.
Increasing the national debt by trillions.
In short? This is the stuff of dictatorship: remaking America as an iron-fisted socialist country.
But in the darkness, a light appears.
Former North Carolina Congressman and Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former Trump White House Senior Adviser Stephen Miller have had enough. And they are doing something about this incredibly dangerous moment in American history.
Specifically they fave formed “America First Legal,” issuing this mission statement:
We believe that all Americans deserve a government that puts their needs, their interests, and their country FIRST. This is the sacred obligation of every elected leader. This is the system our Founding Fathers established. This is the priceless heritage of every American citizen.
Yet America First principles are now under attack like never before. Our security, our liberty, our sovereignty, and our most fundamental rights and values are being systematically dismantled by an unholy alliance of corrupt special interests, big tech titans, the fake news media, and liberal Washington politicians.
We founded America First Legal to save our country from this coordinated campaign. With your support, we will oppose the radical left’s anti-jobs, anti-freedom, anti-faith, anti-borders, anti-police, and anti-American crusade.
What will Meadows and Miller be doing? They are quite specific. Says their statement:
The radical left is using its power inside and outside of the government to destroy our country. It is opening America’s borders, shutting down American energy, trying to take over American elections, and violating the fundamental civil rights of the American People. At America First Legal, we are building a team of some of the nation’s best legal, political, and strategic thinkers to challenge this lawlessness at every turn.
We will use every legal tool at our disposal to defend our citizens from unconstitutional executive overreach. We will also stand up against corporations that restrict free speech and violate our citizens’ civil rights.
We are committed to fighting for all Americans–regardless of race, color, religion, or creed. We will defend the rights of all Americans from attacks by anyone, in any party, who would seek to attack their freedom, their dignity, and their equal rights under the law.
For years, progressives have used the court system to attack our founding documents, undermine the rule of law, and erode our nation’s most cherished principles and traditions.
With America First Legal, we are turning the legal tables on the radical activist left. We will wage a forceful defense of our rights, our country, and our cherished American way of life.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but this announcement could not come at a more critical time.
As House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy said the other day on the House floor when discussing the attempt to pack the Supreme Court: “Never in my time in politics did I ever believe they would go this far.”
But, alas, they have gone this far — and they want to go further. So much further that America as founded will be gone forever if they succeed.
There can be no illusions. By no means does this effort by Meadows and Miller mean the other side will simply roll over. To the contrary. What America faces is a lengthy, massive battle over the future of this country. As Congressman Jim Jordan pointed out the other night on Sean Hannity’s Fox television show, the Left already commands the heights of major American institutions, from Hollywood to the media, academia, corporate America, the law, and government. And as Americans have been reminded in recent days with the removal of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game from Atlanta, the Left is effectively running large sections of the world of American professional sports.
It will take more than America First Legal alone to fight — and win — this battle. But clearly there has to be a place to start, and this announcement by Meadows and Miller is an excellent one.
They are joined in this effort by other former members of the Trump administration. That would include former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, former Trump Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought, former Counselor to the Attorney General Gene Hamilton, president of the Conservative Partnership Institute (CPI) Ed Corrigan, and CPI’s Chief Operating Officer Wesley Denton. The pool of expertise here is wide and deep.
In the very first issue of William F. Buckley Jr.’s National Review — in 1955 — Buckley famously said that his magazine “stands athwart history, yelling Stop, at a time when no one is inclined to do so, or to have much patience with those who so urge it.”
Not so famous is this, also from Buckley: “The few spasmodic victories conservatives are winning are aimless, uncoordinated, and inconclusive … because many years have gone by since the philosophy of freedom has been expounded systematically, brilliantly, and resourcefully.”
Sixty-six years later, the conservative movement has made much progress. Over time Buckley would be joined by R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr.’s The American Spectator — the publication you are reading. And eventually, there would be Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin talk radio, Fox News, Regnery Publishing, and, in this era, Newsmax and One America News Network.
But Buckley’s point from those 66 years ago still stands, if not even more so. There is no time for “spasmodic victories” that are “aimless, uncoordinated, and inconclusive.”
This is a quite serious war for America as founded, not to mention the very soul of the country. There is no time to waste.
And to the great good fortune of conservatives, Messrs. Meadow and Miller and company at America First Legal are not wasting a minute.
