Dear Left: On Independence Day, please stay home. Give America one day of respite to celebrate what you have spent the other 364 days of the year denigrating. On our national holiday, there is no greater gift that you could give America than your absence.
Having the Left in attendance on Independence Day is like encountering an atheist at Christmas. What do you wish them, when you know that they do not just fail to celebrate your holiday but actively deny its reason for being? “Happy Nothing?”
Independence Day is the celebration of America. It is pure patriotism, old and genuine. It was celebrated across what was not even yet a country in 1776, and it has been ever since. Americans do not need to be told, let alone forced as in some countries, to wave their flag and celebrate their national day. They just do it. They always have and they always will … unless of course the Left intervene.
It is for all the reasons that Americans habitually and instinctively celebrate America’s independence that the Left hate July Fourth. Oh, they may pretend to participate in their fashion of anti-Americanism wrapped in the fake bunting that claims protest to be patriotism. Yet really they are as thoroughly alienated from it as they are from the country itself.
The Left have missed no opportunity to degrade America. What once was undoubtedly their silent resentment is now loudly and continuously proclaimed. For the Left, essentially nothing is right about America. We are racist, sexist, chauvinist, polluting plutocrats. At every turn, the Left proclaim us to be hypocrites. To them the very fiber of our being is wrong, and the very fabric of our nation reinforces it.
We know that from the first firecracker the Left will have their parade of party-poopers ready to tell us why America should not be celebrated at all. The Left will tell us that the Declaration of Independence is a reactionary document, not a revolutionary one. For them it is just another thing for which we and our forebearers should apologize.
Of course, the Declaration of Independence was and remains a truly revolutionary document. It was the work of what had been 13 separate colonies audaciously declaring “That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States.” It is a document of dissolution, self-determination, and reformation based on the principle of freedom for individuals as individuals.
With this document, the colonies were dissolving ties to their mother country and hurling themselves collectively onto the world stage. Their declaration was not one of a new government but the aspiration to form one on a new principle thoroughly incomprehensible to the Left — that governments are meant to be subservient to their citizens, not citizens being subservient to their government: “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government.”
In its day there was nothing like it. There have been few since, and none so successful. It was immediately incendiary. Its flames leapt, not just in America, but across the world and across time. They still do; they always will.
Yet for America’s Left, they do not. Instead theirs is a smoldering resentment that has burst into full conflagration. We know their criticisms before they utter them. And the Left can only utter them by ignoring the context of 1776, because put into context their criticisms become utter nonsense.
America’s Left live in a narcissism of now. They are their own standard. They judge themselves the apotheosis of American development, a subjective standard to which everyone else falls short and to which everyone else should bow down. So they topple statues, they demand name changes, they rewrite history, they ban words, they cancel culture — all in a self-appointed role to “woke” the slumbering unenlightened.
That their standard is mutable and that this renders it no standard at all is of no concern to them. They move ever leftward at an accelerating pace. Even those who were once “left” now find themselves left behind. Former radicals are now conservatives to them. And former moderates, let alone conservatives, are now beneath their contempt.
For the Left, Independence Day is not a day to love America but to loathe it even more. They condemn its past, hate its present, and love only the leftist utopias of their imaginations, which when attempted the rest of the country seeks to flee.
So we urge the Left to stay home today. Do not belabor us with your fake patriotism that is obviously anti-Americanism. As we salute our flag, do not join us just to burn it. As we enjoy our fireworks, do not try to tell us that these are somehow racist. As we light our barbecues, do not tell us how these are contributing to climate change and urge us to become vegans.
In short, on America’s Independence Day, as we enjoy our parade, do not rain on it. We know that this is too much to ask of the Left. Like ants to a picnic, they come uninvited, and their pleasure seems to come from others’ discomfort. Better instead to disinvite them at the beginning. So dear Left, instead of taking a knee, just take a seat. Or, better yet, just take a pass altogether.
