The environmentalist instinct to look for a way to blame humans for this (which Chris mocks below) strikes me as a modern secular equivalent to ancient pagan appeals to Earth-gods. It’s hard to accept the harsh reality that nature can be as cruelly indifferent to humanity as it sometimes is.
But if we’re powerless to stop tsunamis, we can still mitigate suffering. Here are some ways to help the victims of the disaster.
