The Democrats insist that they represent a return to normalcy even as they celebrate the abnormal. Their agenda is an ongoing experiment against common sense, from closing schools to opening borders to imposing transgenderism by edict. The Democrats ignore the essential functions of government while pursuing extraneous ones. They fight harder for foreigners than Americans. The unfolding chaos of the Biden administration offers a glimpse of the price America will pay for this frivolously radical politics. We are already seeing the costs of Biden’s utterly heedless immigration policy.
Biden has no one to blame but himself for a crisis of illegal immigrants massing at the border. He had spent months flashing a green light toward them. One of his chief campaign promises was that no one would be deported at all for the first 100 days. Biden prided himself on running to the left of Obama on the issue, assuring illegal immigrants that they would enjoy greater laxity under his leadership. He in effect called for turning America into a sanctuary country.
Now responsible for the consequences of this wildly imprudent policy, Biden administration officials are backtracking a bit. Alejandro Mayorkas, Biden’s Homeland Security Secretary, has been reduced to this plea: “We are not saying don’t come. We are saying don’t come now.” He says, “What we are seeing now at the border is the immediate result of the dismantlement of the system and the time that it takes to rebuild it virtually from scratch.” Who asked them to start from scratch? What did they expect would happen if they junked a system that was working?
What Democrats call a return to normalcy is a return to chaos. Even CNN, normally in the tank for the Biden administration, admits the border problem is ballooning:
The Biden administration is racing to find space for the growing number of families and unaccompanied children crossing the US-Mexico border alone, which may include opening more temporary facilities and providing federal funding for Covid-19 testing.
“We’re apprehending more kids than we can release,” a senior Homeland Security official told CNN. “There’s a lot of discussion about who to release to make room for these kids.”
“We’re not keeping up,” said a Department of Health and Human Services official, referring to the department’s capacity to care for unaccompanied migrant children.
The Border Patrol had more than 1,300 children in custody waiting for placement by HHS on Tuesday, roughly a 300 person increase from the day before, a source with knowledge told CNN.
Meanwhile, Fox News reports that migrants are lining up at the border, donning “T-shirts in support of President Biden.”
Having created a problem where there wasn’t one, Biden is now begging Mexico’s president to stem the migration tide, reports the New York Times:
President Biden on Monday sought help from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico in averting a new crisis at the border, hoping for diplomatic cooperation from one of the key supporters of the harsh tactics imposed by Mr. Biden’s predecessor to choke off immigration.
Mr. López Obrador won the admiration of President Donald J. Trump for cooperating with his hard-line immigration agenda, and the Mexican president praised Mr. Trump during a call with Mr. Biden, then the president-elect, in December.
Facing an uptick of illegal migrant crossings at some parts of the southwestern border, Mr. Biden is now hoping that Mr. López Obrador will become a partner in preventing another cycle of out-of-control migration from Central America, but that he will do so without resorting to the full range of policies Mr. Trump embraced. The Mexican president appeared open to collaboration, issuing a joint statement committing to address climate change, the pandemic and migration north.
This mess tells American all they need to know about the priorities of the Democrats. They don’t eliminate crises; they create new ones. Their open-borders experiment is already fizzling in their faces. But they won’t admit that they should have left well enough alone. They will, rather, call on Biden to devote even more scarce resources to accommodate illegal immigration. They are the party of open borders and closed businesses and schools. Let it be noted that as America reeled from a pandemic, as children waited for classrooms to open and unemployment grew, the Democrats busied themselves with the causes of amnesty and transgenderism.
