Conservative lawmakers from both houses of Congress held a press conference on Capitol Hill this afternoon to proclaim their support for the Cut Cap Balance Pledge. These legislators are tying their support for an increase in the debt limit to spending reductions, enforceable spending caps, and a strong balanced budget amendment. Sens. Jim DeMint, Rand Paul, and Mike Lee joined leading house conservatives like Republican Study Committee head Jim Jordan and dozens of outside conservative groups in supporting the pledge.
“I am convinced, after my time here in Washington, that the only way we can get our fiscal house in order is through structural reform such as those proposed in the Cut Cap Balance Pledge,” Paul said in a statement. This sets up a confrontation with Democrats in the Senate and the White House, who are less likely to support such a sweeping stand. That said, the CAP Act has bipartisan support, with the backing of Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO).
