Even European liberals have taken to complaining about American “wokeness.” French President Emmanuel Macron, who is hardly a conservative, has denounced “certain social science theories entirely imported from the United States.” America’s poisonous identity politics, he says, is infecting French society.
Macron is sounding a bit like Alexis de Tocqueville, the 19th-century French author of Democracy in America, who predicted that America’s mania for equality would swallow up its love of liberty. “Americans are so enamored of equality, they would rather be equal in slavery than unequal in freedom,” he said.
It would appear that America has reached that point. The “equity” campaigns of the Biden administration are all predicated on suppressing freedom. The race-based social engineering that Biden espouses can’t permit freedom lest it results in unequal outcomes. The Democrats don’t even bother to speak about “equality of opportunity” anymore. “Equitable treatment means we all end up at the same place,” Kamala Harris has said. In other words, the job of government is to level everything down to the lowest common denominator. Hold people back, don’t let anyone excel — these are the imperatives of the “equity” commissars.
Hence, we see the Left across the country wiping out academically superior schools and weakening their admission standards. These schools offend the egalitarian sensibilities of liberals. They prefer to see students equal in ignorance rather than see them free to pursue excellence.
One can understand why Europeans fear this “Americanization.” It is an egalitarian obsession obviously at odds with a nation’s best interests. How can a country have a future if it is deliberately sabotaging its most promising students? On Fox News recently, Mark Steyn read from a letter penned by a group called Dallas Justice Now to the parents of white children. The letter sounded like something Kamala Harris could have composed:
To our white allies, talk is not enough. Commit yourself to taking action and making sacrifices to correct centuries of injustice. Open up spaces for black and Latinx communities by refusing to send your kids to Ivy League and U.S. News and World Report Top 50 Schools and encourage friends, neighbors, and family members to do the same.
Imagine if those hundreds of thousands of spots of these institutions were occupied only by marginalized communities; imagine the opportunities. We can achieve true equity within our lifetimes, but only if white folks are willing to sacrifice their privileges.
This goes beyond even the dour predictions of Tocqueville. Here we have liberals demanding that politically unfavored children be sacrificed on the altar of political correctness. They are lower than slaves. They are equity’s ritualistic expiation.
The indoctrination of white children in critical race theory is designed to brainwash them into accepting their sacrificial status. The more dogmatically liberalism adheres to its perverse definitions of equality and equity, the more victims it offers to the PC gods. The high priests of feminism, obsessed with leveling the military, are now demanding that all women submit to the draft. Democrats, with the help of pliable and craven Republicans, have advanced this draft proposal on the Senate floor.
The gratuitousness of this push — America hasn’t had a draft in decades — speaks to the insanity of wokeness. It is utterly idle and destructive. If women don’t want to partake of the equal opportunity to die in war, well, too bad, say liberals. They must be conscripted anyway. Here we see the consequences of liberalism’s false definition of equality between the sexes — not sameness in dignity but sameness in all respects.
Dragging women into combat, we’re told, is a great triumph for “gender equity” by the same feminists who decry “violence against women.” A government policy that treats men and women identically guarantees the exposure of women to violence and kills any ethos of chivalry at the very moment the “Me Too” movement presupposes it. Just as liberalism forbids academic excellence, so it forbids military excellence. It chooses no standards over high standards since its goal is mandated leveling.
Macron has good reason to see America’s eruption of identity politics as a pernicious influence. It is a civilizational death wish. The institutions most essential to a nation’s survival can’t possibly endure under such an unserious ideology. Wokeness is presented as a remedy to the barbaric practices of the past, but it just generates new ones. “Women and children first” was once a phrase invoked to protect them. Now women and children themselves are liberalism’s first victims.
