House Speaker John Boehner has announced his three appointments to the super committee created by the debt ceiling legislation. He has chosen House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, and House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton.
Hensarling is a longtime favorite of fiscal conservatives. Camp played a role in crafting the tax reform ideas in the Paul Ryan plan, though there were reports of tension between the two after the Medicare reforms came under fire. And conservative leaders unsuccessfully lobbied to deny Upton his committee chairmanship.
The joint committee is tasked with coming up with an additional $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction. Reports of Harry Reid’s choices leaked yesterday. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also get three appointments each.
