Bob Kerrey to Run for Senate in Nebraska
by

The Associated Press is reporting that former Sen. Bob Kerrey will seek the Democratic nomination to replace Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE). This turns a near-certain Republican pickup into a toss-up, and coupled with Olympia Snowe’s retirement complicates the Republican path to a Senate majority.

That being said, Kerrey is no lock to win the election. Kerrey was already to the left of Nelson during his previous stint in the Senate. Since then he has been president of the left-wing New School and has toyed with running for mayor of New York City. In addition to being relatively liberal and living out of state, he’ll have to get a decent number of voters supporting the Republican presidential nominee to split their tickets and vote for him.

Kerrey had previously said he wasn’t going to run for the seat and turned down an opportunity to run for the seat vacated by Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) in 2008.
