Bachmann Iowa Chair Endorses Ron Paul
by

According to multiple reports on the ground in Iowa, Michele Bachmann’s state chairman Kent Sorenson has endorsed Ron Paul just hours after appearing at a Bachmann event. Sorenson described Paul as the most conservative surviving top-tier candidate, praised his opposition to military adventurism, and urged an enthusiastic rally in Des Moines to help put Paul in the White House in 2012.

Bachmann won the Ames straw poll in August and at one point was the frontrunner in Iowa. Her surge, powered by a strong debate performance in New Hampshire, helped force fellow Minnesotan Tim Pawlenty out of the presidential race. But she spent much of her money trying to win Ames and lost momentum once Rick Perry jumped in during her moment of triumph.

Bachmann never quite recovered even after Perry receded, but her poll numbers did inch back up slightly once Herman Cain dropped out. It’s a long shot given that she’s hovering around 10 percent depending on the poll (CNN/Time had her at 9 percent today) but she has been trying to beat Newt Gingrich, Perry, and Rick Santorum for a third place showing in the caucuses to keep her campaign alive.

UPDATE: The Bachmann camp is alleging Sorenson was in effect bought off; the Paul campaign has denied the charge.
