A Nominee Too Radical To Get Through Dem Senate

Seven Democrats voted with all Senate Republicans to oppose the nomination of Debo Adegbile as assistant attorney general.

You know a person is radical when he can’t get even the simple majority now required after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s use of the “nuclear option” last year to block filibusters of the Obama administration’s nominees.

And Adegbile certainly is.

Not only was he responsible for the NAACP’s unnecessary and polarizing defense of cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal (whose death sentence was commuted to life in prison in 2012), causing great opposition to the nomination from law enforcement, but he also (perhaps even more disturbingly, even if it might not seem that way at first) believes that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is correct to say that employers cannot use criminal background checks in hiring decisions because refusing to hire felons has a greater impact on minorities. As Byron York put it, Adegbile believes employers should be forced to hire convicted felons.

You have to dig pretty deep into the legal sewers to find a person who could make the Obama Justice Department even more radical than it already is. Amazingly President Obama found just such a person. It is rather a miracle that he was not approved, and it says something about the declining fear that Democrats have of this president. Strangely, three of the Senate’s most vulnerable Democrats, Mark Begich (AK), Kay Hagan (NC), and Mary Landrieu (LA) voted for the nomination, handing their opponents another campaign issue.

In addition to the seven “real” no votes, Harry Reid changed his vote to no in order to allow himself the right to bring the nomination up for a future vote.
