Emily tells us that Elizabeth Warren won’t be seeking the White House in 2016 citing her interview with Fortune magazine in which she said no when asked, “So are you going to run for President?”
But over at Vox, Andrew Prokop is far more skeptical. He cites Mitt Romney using the word no 11 times in three sentences followed by, “I’m not running again,” to Ashley Parker of The New York Times. As Emily herself noted last week, “Romney 2016 is Officially a Thing Now”.
Prokop also notes early in his Senate career, Barack Obama repeatedly denied he would run for President until shortly before the 2006 mid-term elections. Indeed, Prokop links to an old New York Times piece co-written by Adam Nagourney and Jeff Zeleny. They wrote:
Should he run, Democrats said, his decision would pose a major complication to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, who is widely viewed as the dominant figure in the field of potential candidates.
Nagourney and Zeleny’s words proved to be prophetic.
Needless to say, if Elizabeth Warren were to indicate she was reconsidering it would pose a major complication to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is widely viewed as the dominant figure in the field of potential candidates.
Unless Elizabeth Warren were to join Hillary onstage in a joint press conference wearing a Hillary ’16 button and say, “Hillary Clinton should succeed Barack Obama in the White House,” then I’m not buying her supposed disinterest in the job.
When it comes to running for President, no doesn’t always mean no.
