No Back-Pay for Federal Workers!

Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will vote on a bill which would pay federal workers for the time they were furloughed during the government shutdown.

My initial reaction is that this is primarily an attempt to buy moderate voters in Virginia, a key swing state which also happens to have a governor’s race going on right now, with two weak candidates slugging it out.

If the government is closed, it’s closed. People shouldn’t get paid for work they didn’t do, even if the closure is not their fault. (Those who are deemed essential and therefore working during the “shutdown” should be paid.)

And while it may cause some pain for government workers, there is a substantial offsetting benefit to the public in terms of cost. Back pay for those workers is debt burden on my children.

Private sectors workers should wonder (again) why government employees, the most difficult people on earth to fire (Lois Lerner being a great case in point), continue to get treatment that an ordinary citizen would never expect to receive in the private sector yet which is being paid for with our money.

It will be interesting to see if the House ties anything else to the bill, and whether the Senate will act on it. Given that government workers tend to lean Democrat, I expect they would act if it were a “clean” bill.

I’m sorry for people who have chosen such a dysfunctional employer and whose finances will be temporarily inconvenienced. But while the workers are not working, taxpayers should be off the hook for their salaries.

Next time vote for a president who is more willing to sit down with duly elected Republican representatives than he is to sit down with the Iranian terrorist regime.
