Trump and Haley are set to play Grinch to the UN’s collection of Islamic supremacists, kleptocrats and Eurotrash following the Jerusalem embassy vote.
Nikki Haley, in case you weren’t aware, is a superstar. She proved it this week while most of the rest of the diplomats at the United Nations proved themselves to be, well, something else.
Haley, our UN Ambassador, was tasked with handling a touchy issue — namely, President Trump’s decision to fulfill a campaign promise and do something most Americans have wanted done for some time. That being to place the American embassy in Israel in that nation’s capital, Jerusalem.
Israel is, after all, an American ally, and a pretty good one. It’s been unseemly that our embassy wouldn’t be in their capital. The U.S. embassy is in the capital of every other country we have one, so it’s only proper that we would have the one in Israel in Jerusalem — which is, after all, the city Israel has chosen to serve in that capacity.
And our choice to place the embassy in Jerusalem is nobody else’s business but ours and Israel’s. It’s not Britain’s business, or China’s, or Afghanistan’s, or Cuba’s.
And yet nevertheless, a resolution went in front of the United Nations’ full body this week to condemn us for placing the embassy in Jerusalem, and the four abovementioned countries and 124 others — including the usual suspects like Iran and Egypt, but also others like Denmark, France, Austria and Germany — voted to condemn us.
Eight countries — Israel, Honduras, Guatemala, Nauru, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau and Togo, not to mention the USA — did the honorable thing and voted against the resolution. Some 35 others, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, the Bahamas, Poland, Romania, Croatia, Mexico, Jamaica, Haiti, South Sudan and a few others, did the defensible thing and abstained.
For the rest, here’s to a crappy Christmas. Lumps of coal in all your stockings.
Trump and Haley warned the anti-American crowd that we would not be lectured to on morality by the likes of Bolivia and Belarus, and that some of those countries are the recipients of American foreign aid — a spigot he would happily cut off if they followed through on their threats of condemnation.
“They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us,” Trump said. “Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us, we’ll save a lot. We don’t care.”
And Haley, just before the vote, was even more spot on.
“The United States will remember this day in which it was singled out in this assembly for the very act of exercising our right as a sovereign nation,” she said. “We will remember it when, once again, we are called up to make the world’s largest contribution to the U.N., and we will remember it when many countries come calling on us to pay even more and to use our influence for their benefit.”
Previous American administrations lacked the sand to do the simple, obvious thing and place the embassy in Jerusalem. Previous American administrations would have let themselves be mau-maued into backing off such a position out of a fear of “world opinion.”
This is the first administration in a long time to recognize that “world opinion” consists of the bloviations of Third World kleptocrats, Islamic supremacists from the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Russian satrapies and Eurotrash sitzpinklers from countries torpidly micturating on their cultural patrimony as a hijra of millions descend upon them. In short, Trump recognizes the UN is a collection of crooks and frauds, not statesmen, and deserves no better treatment than it gives its host and patron.
The American people have long recognized this. It hardly requires much attention to understand that when Iran and Cuba are put in charge of the Human Rights Commission the whole organization isn’t to be taken seriously, and when the UN is given a mission like peacekeeping or arms control and the result turns out to be a series of prostitution rings and massive bribery schemes, any intelligent person would recognize that to support those missions with American tax dollars is to compound the theft.
So let’s hope Trump and Haley weren’t just making idle threats. Let’s hope there are real consequences to these enemies and false friends who delivered their pinpricks to us this week.
It’s Christmas. Trump should offer lumps of coal to deposit in each of their stockings. Don’t ask for anything in 2018, fellas. The bridge has been burned.
