The Spectacle Blog

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who may be unaware that he is currently enjoying his final term in the U.S. Senate, claims to have the 60 votes he needs to muscle ObamaCare through his chamber. God help us if he does.

The current iteration of ObamaCare is classic Mussolini-style Fascism (i.e. corporatism). It forces Americans at gunpoint to purchase health insurance, a requirement never before imposed on the American people. The big insurance companies and the federal government have combined to subject the public to this tyrannical mandate that Americans overwhelmingly oppose. This is the economic essence of Fascism.

Shame on them on all.

Nonetheless, William Kristol of the Weekly Standard offers some words of encouragement to the patriotic Americans who still believe in limited government.

Keep fighting on health care. Fight for the next few days in the Senate. Fight the conference report in January in the Senate and the House. Start trying to repeal the worst parts of the bill the moment it passes, if it does.

After all, never before has so unpopular a piece of major legislation been jammed through on a party-line vote. This week, Rasmussen showed 57% of voters nationwide saying that it would be better to pass no health care reform bill this year instead of passing the plan currently being considered by Congress, with only 34% favoring passing that bill. 54% of Americans now believe they will be worse off if reform passes, while just 25% believe they'll be better off. Making the 2010 elections a referendum on health care should work--if Republicans don't let up in the debate over the next year.

Indeed ObamaCare may be the Democrats' undoing. They are betting it all on their healthcare plan, which won't kick in for years to come. A public backlash before then could halt the program in its tracks and kill it, leading to a Bastille Day-like slaughter at the polls for the Democratic powers that be.

Of course, it would be better to abort this monstrosity while in the womb, but the beauty of politics is that the fight is never really over. There will be more battles to come.

As Kristol writes, "Fight on with respect to health care. Fight on other fronts. And recruit new fighters. In a word: Fight. "

Amen.

re: "it would be better to abort this monstrosity while in the womb" - it takes a frightened, bitter, and myopic partisan to degenerate to this level. Clearly you cranium has yet to properly skull-f*cked with empathy and logic. The only womb in question here is the one that wrought you - a diseased, hateful, anti-humanist!

Mr Vadum,

Once again, your post is based upon a complete falsehood.

The United States government is not fascist in organization. Obama is not a fascist. The Democratic Party is not fascist. This is simply historically true.

Calling them fascist is immensely ignorant and disrespectful to the millions who actually WERE and ARE oppressed by fascist governments.

One thinks of a spoilt child who missed his afternoon Twinkie whining that he's "starving." A firm, sharp smack is the proper adult response to instill a little discipline and moral sanity.

Interested Conservative| 12.20.09 @ 5:24PM

Interestingly, the Obama administration does exhibit more "fascist" tendencies than its close relatives, socialism or communism. The intense emphasis on using corporate and quasi-governmental agencies rather than the state itself, the mandates and regulatory emphasis, the ongoing and permanent oversight.

All that said, it's still useful to keep Orwell in mind when using "fascism" as a catch-all adjective for bad or evil or unwise acts by official power.

The problem, of course, will be to undo such acts - the prior century is not very encouraging on the peaceful and democratic corrections to such policies, and the US hasn't shown much progress in correcting governmental missteps.

SoCon| 12.20.09 @ 5:36PM

I've told you many times that you're a fascist, LibReader/Jeremiah. A firm, sharp smack is what the American people are going to administer to you fascist liberals next year. November, 2010 can't come soon enough.

Jeff Perren| 12.20.09 @ 4:19PM

Mr. Vadum is accurate. While it's always dicey to rely on dictionaries for political or philosophical terms:

fascism (usually uncountable; plural fascisms)

1. A political regime, having totalitarian aspirations, ideologically based on centralized government, government control of business, repression of criticism or opposition, a leader cult and exalting the state and/or religion above individual rights. Originally only applied (usually capitalized) to Benito Mussolini's Italy."

Fascism
"A philosophy or system of government that is marked by stringent social and economic control, a strong, centralized government usually headed by a dictator, and often a policy of belligerent nationalism." (From The American Heritage Dictionary)"

The essential, defining attributes are these:

When a government wishes to espouse only nominal respect for private property, but de factoregulate it to the extent of effectively nationalizing it - as the Federal government has been in the process of doing for 100 years, accelerating in the past 40 - that government is fascist de jure.

True, we don't yet see black shirts patrolling the streets to beat up store owners. We don't yet have political opponents thrown in jail for espousing dissent. We still have a large measure of free speech. But, give the Progressives another generation and those things will go as well.

Dana in IL| 12.21.09 @ 2:40AM

Jeff Perren - WELL SAID!

Matthew Vadum| 12.20.09 @ 4:37PM

As I have written umpteen times before, Obama has strong Fascist (i.e. corporatist) tendencies in the economic sphere, even more so than the awful Bush 43 before him. I am hardly the first to make this observation. He is a charismatic, narcissistic figure who encourages the cult of personality that has developed around him and has tried to use government (NEA) resources to promote it. He has appointed dozens of so-called czars with vast powers over industry and the economy. He has legions of mindless fanatical followers (two of whom have commented above) who don't even seem to realize how profoundly un-American their project is. He has singled out and scapegoated specific groups within society, e.g. the rich, businessmen, in order to distract from the problems he is creating as he undermines society. He is leading America on the road to certain ruin by nationalizing healthcare, the automobile industry, banks, and by raising taxes, debasing the currency, weakening America abroad, and kneecapping the War on Terror whose name is so offensive to him he cannot even bring himself to say it. He is intolerant of dissent and wants to use the power of government to silence his opponents via the Fairness Doctrine or whatever the latest iteration of it may be. He is on record as wanting some vague kind of national security force. This last promise alone ought to scare the hell out of people who believe in freedom and democracy. I don't know or care what the Democratic Party is. It is pursuing a Fascist program in order to end the United States of America as we know it. There has to be a devastating backlash at the polls in 2010 to stem this tide. If present trends continue, we're going to get it.

Jeff Perren| 12.20.09 @ 4:53PM

Mr. Vadum,

I resile my comment on the Horowitz blog.

Well said, sir. I'm reminded of Mencken's statement to the effect that Democracy is when the people get what they're asking for, good and hard. The last election is a prime example.

SoCon| 12.20.09 @ 5:44PM

Correction, Matt: The fascist democrats are going to get it. Good and hard.

Thanks for your post.

Liberal Reader| 12.20.09 @ 9:13PM

Rubbish.

None of the facts you offer here support the notion that Obama is a fascist.

"Czars" were introduced by Nixon. Reagan, HW Bush, Clinton, and W all had "czars."

By the way, there IS NO government position called "czar." This is an ironic journalistic shorthand (if anything a holdover of Cold War humor) that applies to a variety of different kinds of jobs in the executive branch.

Obama is "intolerant"? You mean, he doesn't agree with you on everything.

I repeat.

Your contention that Obama is a "fascist" is factually false. If Obama is taken to be a "fascist," then the word has no meaning. (As Orwell would argue, the only person interested in eviscerating the word "fascist" and emptying it of all meaning would be -- a fascist. Look in the mirror much, Vadum?)

Fascism has a definition. Obama does not fit that definition.

You're either a journalist or your not. If you're going to be a journalist, your going to have to be a little more careful about how you use language.

Patriot| 12.20.09 @ 10:22PM

Shut up Nazi troll; your treachery will be answered next November.

Liberal Reader| 12.20.09 @ 10:59PM

On what ground do you call me a "Nazi"?

It's really the same question I put to Vadum.

Neither of you seem interested in the actual definitions of these words. You don't seem to understand their historical reality. It's akin to Holocaust denial. If ANYone can be a Nazi, then the word has no meaning, no reference.

Patriot| 12.20.09 @ 11:36PM

You are a single, sniveling Nazi in a party of Nazi thugs responsible for the slaughter of over fifty-million innocent babies. Holocaust, indeed.

Now, you're going after the elderly and infirm with your barbaric rationed care. I repeat--You monsters will be dealt with next November.

Dana in IL| 12.21.09 @ 2:46AM

Obviously, you are ill informed as to the true meaning of "fascist" - EVERYTHING Obama does can be taken right out of "Mein Comp". My husband is a German, born in Berlin in 1944, while his mother was alive, we had MANY conversations re: how Hitler managed to gain control of the German people - Obama is following Hitler's plan to the "T"!

Liberal Reader| 12.21.09 @ 10:39AM

Vadum: "He has legions of mindless fanatical followers (two of whom have commented above) who don't even seem to realize how profoundly un-American their project is"

I think many Obamaphiles know exactly how un-American 'their project' is, of which ObamaCare is just a component (although a monster one). Tearing down America so it can be rebuilt in Obama's image was a clear goal of the messiah's most fervent supporters prior to Nov 08. Obama today still shows more allegiance to his ideological push than any considerations of what's good for Americans at the street level suffering from his refusal to acknowledge American concepts like free choice, supply & demand, free enterprise, and unrestricted opportunities that individuals can either succeed or fail at. These are not Obama values. They are American, which again makes me wonder what exactly are the values Obama used to tell us we should 'return to'.

Ken (Old Texican)| 12.20.09 @ 5:45PM

Mathew,
from your keyboard to "God's ears".

I want to thank you guys at AmSpec once again for your open forums. It is a pleasure to open your site and be able to read the inmost semi-thought from the little useful idiots following their pied piper.

I spent the best $20 of my life joining moveon.org. I am now on their almost daily e-mail blasts mailing list, and I get to go into their "huddle" as they call their plays and watch those plays executed here a day or two later. heh.

What is really cool is to observe their growing desperation as the massive middle of Americans begin to grow more and more involved, and committed to stoping this facist/communist coup attempt upon our Constitution, and our day to day lives.
I do pray...and work toward...that devastating backlash at the polls in 2010. I am in touch now with LOTS of tea partiers across the country. Most of the organizers are thrilled that I can pick up the phone and visit with just about any CEO in the country, and most conservative candidate campaign committees.
(your words)
""This last promise alone ought to scare the hell out of people who believe in freedom and democracy.""

Sir, as I wrote the other day, "being scared is so far back in my rear-view mirror, that I cannot even see it any more."
When I helped found "T.E.A.M. AMERICA" heh, I sorta' put myself on all their lists.
But,
Our org is now in a position to "nationalize" almost every congressional election. We can pour in the votes...which will pour in whatever money is needed...to win those suckers.
OK,
The communist/fascists know that already. They know their days are numbered...unless they are willing to "go all the way"....with their thug gangs, or gun registration/confiscation attempts, or intimidation tactics still to be determined.
Heh!
"Rots a-Ruck" with that, commies.

One of the primary components of "Team America" is our military combat veteran cohort. The other of course is the "small" business community nation-wide....which interestingly enough harbors a lot of those vets.
The real question then is: What happens if the fascist/communists "defer" the elections...or rigs them somehow with "Mickey Mouse" votes?

My thought is that then...we will truly see what middle Americans are made of. We have never failed before................Never!
Best regards

Jim Hlavac| 12.20.09 @ 5:53PM

I have long argued that it is statism -- or statists -- that we are facing. They masquerade behind a bewildering array of labels: fascists, socialists, royalists, community activists, theocracy, environmentalists, communists, nazis -- dear leaders, presidents-for-life, commissars, plenary committees -- on and on it goes, almost endless. Then, when a critic uses a term to describe the logic of the situation, they are called to task for using the wrong adjective -- "oh, no, we are not fascists, we only want the king to control the guilds" -- and then the logic of it all is lost in the terminology. The logic is clear -- statists believe that the state, the government, is the owner of all the wealth, and is free to order it about, that a controlled society is best, that commands by a few work for the many, and that individual liberty interferes with what society wants. Gone unsaid is that the statists want to do the ordering around. Then it is merely a matter of what jots and tittles, terms and titles, words and metaphors, they use to put their measures into law.
But the impact of the law is the same whether a decree by Medieval King, past century commissar, or current times Democrats in secret sessions with their czars.
The solution would seem to just use the word Statist. Or if that fails, the old fallback of pop-psychology -- Control Freaks. Let's just call what they are -- they are Control Freaks. These seek control by whatever name or means. They are freakish about it, really. It is obsessive.
So instead of saying Obama is this or that political term -- just says what is true -- he is a Control Freak.
Like all control freaks, he is clueless about how to actually do anything that needs doing, but he did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Having affordable health care with more options to choose from, and that values the individual and not big insurance companies is more freedom, not less freedom. Fascism is a political form of government, not an economic form of government.

Fascism is used by the Republicans when they nominate conservative Supreme Court Justices who almost always rule in favor of the State and not the individual in first amendment and 4th amendment cases, and other cases involving our individual freedoms and rights to privacy.

Fascism is when the government denies people their individual freedoms. Other than the 2nd amendment the Republicans could care less about our constitutional rights and individual freedoms.

The Democrats are the party of individual freedom, not the Republicans!

The Republicans are the party of fascist-like policies that dictate to people what their standard of morals should be, and policies that destroy our individual freedoms and rights to privacy.

Get educated about our Supreme Court. The Democrats nominate Supreme Court Justices who almost always side with the rights of the individual as opposed to the rights of the State. A State is the biggest form of government power.
The Republicans are the party of fascist-like policies.

The Democrats are the party that values individual freedom!

Patriot| 12.21.09 @ 12:26AM

OMG! What a moron. Individual freedom? Really? Like the individual freedom you fascists are forcing on us by MAKING us buy health insurance or be fined and jailed? That kind of freedom? Affordable? Another liberal lie; ObamaCare is going to bankrupt us. Please cite 'more options' in ObamaCare. Nice try, clown, but your leftists talking points are a joke.

60% of Americans DON'T want ObamaCare, moron--is that freedom? We are tired of the corruption of you democrat liars, cheats and thieves and your sneaky, behind-closed-door health care negotiations.

It's the ignorant and arrogant stupidity of public school educated Americans like you that's destroying our country.

Dana in IL| 12.21.09 @ 3:40AM

Patriot - WAY TO GO! Very well stated. Thank you for you comments.

Dana in IL| 12.21.09 @ 3:37AM

Dan1967 - Just WHERE did you get your info about the Democrats & Republicans? Do you guys have "brain-washing" sessions where they teach you to espouse their doctrine?? You are soooooo WRONG on sooooo many issues, it's hard to know where to start, but I'll try. 1st - Having affordable healthcare with more options & that values the individual IS NOT WHAT THIS PLAN is about! Have you READ the BILL?? Have you LISTENDED TO OBAMA & what he PLANS??? This will be WORSE than HMO's that get between you & your Doctor - some GOVERNMENT bureacrat will be DICTATING to you & yours when, where & IF you can get the care you & your family need. There will be MILLIONS that cannot obtain the care NOW provided for them by their private insurance carriers & those millions will mainly consist of "infants to 15 year olds & then 40 & above". The ages between 16 & 39 will be considered "prime recepients".
2nd - AFFORDABLE??? Just whom do you think is going to PAY for this AFFORDABLE insurance? Those on welfare will NEVER pay. The wealthy have so many tax loop holes - they will never pay - SO, that leaves just us good ole boys in the middle class to pay for EVERYTHING. I'll pay for it, my children will pay for it, my grandchildren & great grandchildren will pay for JUST what is designated in this Bill - IF WE'RE LUCKY!!
4th - This is not FREEDOM, this is political strangulation! Obama, himself, has stated their "end game" is to have a ONE PAYER system (meaning Government-run health care). NO ONE WINS when they get in bed with the government. Example: Medicare is BROKE, Social Security is BROKE, the Veterans healthcare is a JOKE - they couldn't even run the "CASH FOR CLUNKERS" program correctly & you think they can run 1/16th of our economy????
You're right about 1 thing - fascism IS a political form of government - & the DEMS are using EVERY political "trick" they know to get this MONSTER BILL passed. The Military is run by the Goverment - my grandson was sent home from Iraq in August with a dislocated rotor cuff - he waited 3 months to get an appointment with a doctor & was informed he had to wait until May to have surgery on a shoulder where all the ligaments have been separated from the rotor cuff & will not heal properly without surgery. He could lose PERMANENT use of his right arm because a GOVERNMENT agency is in charge of his healthcare!!! He has chosen to take vacation & go to a private doctor to have his surgery - he's scheduled for Jan. 5th. If the CURRENT Health Care Reform Bill is passed- EVERY American citizen faces the same care as my grandson IS NOT receiving.
5th - Freedom, it isn't FREEDOM when the GOVERNMENT can DEMAND that you purchase insurance - whether you want it or not. That, not surprisingly, is FASCISM! It isn't FREEDOM when the GOVERNMENT can DEMAND an employer pay a TAX PENALTY if they don't offer the PUBIC OPTION for insurance. Again, FASCISM (dictating to free peoples how to live their lives).
You're WRONG about the Republicans - I haven't been 100% satisfied with them in the past 10 years, but they beat the DEMS all to Hel* when it comes to individual freedoms.
It's YOU who needs to become educated about the Supreme Court! Siding with the rights of the States, simply means the State governments have the RIGHT to set laws for their citizens, as opposed to the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. The Constitution reads, "The Federal Government is only given that authority which the individual States allocate." The DEMS want EVERYTHING to be regulated by the FEDS - now THAT is true FASCISM!!!

bluecollarbytes| 12.21.09 @ 8:50AM

Dan1967: "The Democrats are the party that values individual freedom!"

except as freedom relates to:
health
vehicles
foods
child rearing
most school systems
businesses politically designated as evil
freedom of choice in energy use

and now we have a clear majority expressing their opposition to this health scare monstrosity, yet Obama and Democratics say 'nuts to you'.

Clearly the Left defines "freedom" as something much different than what most Americans know in their everyday lives.

On Freedom:

The Roman author Cicero differentiated between personal freedom -- today we might call it consumer freedom -- and civic freedom.

Civic freedom, he wrote, is far more important.

Civic freedom, in essence, is an ability to participate in government.

Market freedoms or consumer freedoms are nice, and they do result in Good Things, but they are not the most important freedoms. Too often, in our society, we've allowed ourselves to be bought off with cheap thrills and endless garages full of plastic junk: we've sacrificed civic freedom for the Right to Eat Big Macs.

Thomas Jefferson would never stop throwing up if he could see us now.

Sure, Clown; wrap yourself in your shimmering, majestic prose, but underneath your shallow shimmer, the dark heart of a pro-death fascist beats.

Democrats are the party of death: Death for those millions of fragile innocents who once sweetly slumbered within their mothers' wombs to the vulnerable old folks nearing their final days on earth. You monsters are equal opportunity destroyers; no one is safe with you in power.

Talk about being bought off behind closed doors--you democrat whores don't come cheap. Just ask Landrieu, Dodd, Nelson and all of the moral junk food liberals in congress. You make me throw up.

Patriot --

You are a simpleton. I don't see any point in discussing anything with you.

It would do no good, I suppose, to tell you that 1 out 4 Democrats in the House are pro-life, as are many senators. It would do no good to tell you that Republicans and evangelical Christians and ever conservatives get abortions.

I am pro-life, but I refuse to let the one issue my party gets wrong turn me into a Republican: Republicans get nearly everything ELSE wrong.

No Democratic politician marches a woman to an abortion clinic.

The moral junk food comes from the hypocritical right: all talk, no walk.

You name me ONE time a Republican politician risked so much as a HALF a percentage point at the polls for the sake of abortion.

They're "pro-life" at election time when they want to harvest the votes of millions of people who on the basis of this one issue lend their support to the party of greed, corruption and unrestrained military aggression -- those eternal verities of the Christian faith.

Patriot| 12.21.09 @ 11:17PM

Pro-life democrat is an oxymoron, with the emphasis on moron. You fascist democrats are all about power and control; the lives of the helpless mean nothing to you because they can't vote.

The party of greed and corruption? Surely, you are speaking of your own stinking, cockroach infested democrat party. How many billions of dollars have been stolen from the American people that now fill democrat political slush funds? You're going to need those ill-gotten gains, along with the corrupt, thuggish and thievish tactics of ACORN to re-elect your back-door dealing democrat pariahs in 2010.

Unbridled military aggression? Surely, you jest. It was your fellow democrat, Harry Truman, who ordered the hideous nuclear incineration of those hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese civilians, and your heroes, JFK and LBJ are the democrats who started a war of napalm horror against the Vietnamese. Those two democrat bastards are also responsible for the senseless slaughter of 5o,ooo+ young American lives in that same stupid war. Last, but not least, your Precious Obama is ordering American drones to maim and kill Islamic 'freedom fighters' every damn day--just like the man you idiots demonized, GW Bush.

Don't lecture me, moron, and get off your high-horse; you just make yourself look even more stupid than before. Libtard.

Listen, you weasel. I'm not a fascist, and fuck you for saying so.

You have no clue what you're talking about. You've picked up snatches of loose, disconnected narratives here and there -- probably on television and right wing radio -- and you cobble them into this lame, trite speech.

You're a bigot and a fool. You're the sort of person, for example, who takes Glenn Beck seriously.

I'm not going to debate with you, because you are an ignorant man.

I will give you some advice, however.

First, fascism was at the center of the most important events of the 20th century. There's no excuse for being as ignorant as you are about what fascism is and how to use that term appropriately.

Second, you might actually be persuasive if you didn't abuse the language and didn't make such outrageous and silly claims. Try a more moderate tone: you'd be surprised about what it can accomplish.

Third, I didn't lecture you before. But now I am. Go to a library. Read some books. Visit a museum. Turn off your goddamn television. Use some of the sense the Lord gave you, and stop being such a chump. You'll be happier if you do.

Patriot| 12.22.09 @ 1:45PM

I notice that you couldn't refute ONE accusation I made against you and your stupid, corrupt, greedy and feckless fascist political party. You are the party of unrestrained military aggression; you are the party who is responsible for the needless murder of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in WWII and Vietnam. Eat that, A-Hole!

Not to mention the slaughter of millions upon millions of innocent babies your disgusting, pro-death fascist policies have caused since 1973. And you say you're pro-life--what an ugly, nauseating joke. Your claim would be hilarious if it weren't so tragically wrong.

I don't know how you can sleep at night, continue to look at your own silly, wasted mug in the mirror every day and live with yourself. You are a walking, talking lie; deception personified.

In short, you are useless, like most fascist liberals. You'll get yours on Judgment Day. Just wait and see. God have mercy on your soul; you're gonna need it, sucker.

Patriot| 12.22.09 @ 10:18PM

I knew you would run, you yellow-bellied skunk.

Liberal beta-males are the worst.

…they wouldn’t be forcing this vote in the dead of night.” Yes, it’s a coup ; of course it is. Once in place, all of our lofty ideals about what America is, stands for and can do may not be enough to rescue what our founding fathers so brilliantly bequeathed to us. As the saying goes, we are in the very best of hands. Michelle Malkin has the rundown on the payoffs. Boy, that hope-and-change stuff…
