MEMO FOR THE MOVEMENT
Obama continues his Apology and Appeasement Tour-
with a stop at the United Nations
RE:
Having declared himself a “citizen of the world,” President Obama has apologized to the rest of the world for the perceived transgressions of Americans with whom he does not agree, and has broken agreements with our friends in order to curry favor with our adversaries. President Obama now proceeds to the chair of the United Nations Security Council to continue his path of appeasement and violation of the canons of statecraft.
ACTION:
We urge you to contact your elected officials and the White House
and remind them that it is their responsibility to promote
America’s national interest on the world-stage rather than engage
in futile flattery and apology to other nations. We are very
disappointed by our Commander-in-Chief’s words and actions that
have discredited America.
ISSUE-IN-BRIEF:
Specifically, we submit that President Obama and his Administration have been derelict in the exercise of foreign policy, diplomacy, and statecraft as follows:
1. Trying to appease enemies at the expense of friends.
a. Obama’s attempt to “reset” relations with Russia has consisted of helping Vladimir Putin attain his goal of re-establishing the old Soviet Empire, and signaling to Eastern Europe that we will not let their interests stand in the way of appeasing Russia. The U.S. has quietly withdrawn support from Georgia; has let Ukraine know that it can no longer count on U.S. support; and has withdrawn our agreement to place anti-missile equipment in the Czech Republic and Poland.
b. Obama’s attempts to pressure Israel to stop building settlements on the West Bank in the hopes that the Saudis will engage in “land for peace” negotiations have been summarily rejected by the Saudis.
c. Obama has removed our opposition to Syria’s resumption of control over Lebanon through Hezbollah, and exerted pressure on Israel to surrender the Golan Heights, hoping to gain diplomatic points with Syria.
d. Obama has insisted that Honduras’ removal of its President for violation of the Honduran Constitution was a “military coup” and has withdrawn aid and support for the Honduran Government in favor of the demands of Hugo Chavez and other Latin American authoritarian leftists.
2. Choosing to engage in diplomacy at the UN over issues of climate change rather than promote America’s security and economic interests.
3. Exercising Diplomatic Malpractice by pursuing international negotiations as ends in themselves.
a. Obama has attempted to restart Arab-Israeli peace negotiations by pressing Israel to make preemptive concessions just to get a seat at the table, but with no results whatsoever.
b. Obama claimed success when Iran agreed to face-to-face negotiations, even though Iran rejected the possibility of any discussions about its nuclear program, which was the purpose of the negotiations in the first place
4. Using meaningless and empty words and phrases which diminish the credibility of the United States.
a. Responding to North Korea’s launch of a missile in violation of UN resolutions, Obama said “rules must be binding, violations must be punished, words must mean something.” But there has been no punishment, no action, and no further discussion about what he was talking about.
b. In his speech to the Muslim world in June, he called for a “new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world.” Yet, there has been no explanation of how such a thing might occur. He urged Muslims to “abandon violence” as if his saying so will stop a centuries-long tradition.
5. By apologizing for the sins of domestic political opponents, Obama is telling the world that he represents only part of his country instead of all Americans, and makes it known that he is playing partisan politics on the international stage. The result is disrespect from world leaders and a cheapening of America’s reputation in the world. In the following instances, the president has offered unwarranted apologies on behalf of the American people:
Jan. 26: “All too often the United States starts by dictating …
and we don’t always know all the factors that are involved. So
let’s listen. And I think if we do that, then there’s a
possibility at least of achieving some breakthroughs. … My job
to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not
your enemy. We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been
perfect.”
— President Obama, in an interview with Al Arabiya
April 2: “I would like to think that with my election and the
early decisions that we’ve made, that you’re starting to see some
restoration of America’s standing in the world.”
— President Obama, at G20 summit in London
April 3: ” (Speaking about Europe) Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive.”
— President Obama, speaking of his nation at a town hall in France
April 5: “I know that the trust that binds us has been strained and I know that strain is shared in many places where the Muslim faith is practiced. Let me say this as clearly as I can: The United States is not at war with Islam.”
— President Obama speaking in Turkey

Mr. and Mrs. American Spectator Reader, let P.J. O’Rourke talk sense to your kids.
In Britain, defending your property can get you life.
The debacle of this president’s administration is both a cause and a symptom of the decline of American values. Unless Congress impeaches him, that decline will go on unchecked. An eminent jurist surveys the damage and assesses the chances for the recovery of our culture.
It won’t take long for conservatives to scratch this presidential wannabe off their 2008 scorecard.
The American Christmas, like the songs that celebrate it, makes room for everybody under the rainbow. Is that why so many people seem to be hostile to it?
Was the President done in by the economy, or by the politics of the economy?

There is something to be said for not publicly self-flagellating yourself. It is unbecoming. So the Memo writers have a partially legitimate point. The way to go about this would be to send messages through diplomatic channels and letting your actions speak louder than your words. Bringing the troops home would say a lot more than will empty public apologies. The problem with what they have written is that it is just more blind, mindless interventionism. For example, America should have NOTHING to say about the Israel/Palestine situation at all. It is none of our concern. And “conservatives” citing UN resolutions is both laughable and sad.

Mr. Phillips, I believe we should withdraw from a good deal, perhaps most, of our treaties and alliances, including those that bind us to the UN. Do you agree, however, that until we do, those treaties are binding and should be treated as the "supreme law of the land" as per Article 6 (so long as they do not conflict with the Bill of Rights)?

Toddard the troll will now engage Dan Philips the troll in a fake conversation in "faux conservatism." You guys aren't fooling anybody. You're just wasting your precious time.
Dan Phillips| 9.25.09 @ 11:11PM
Margie, what is a troll? I thought a troll on a conservative website would have to be a liberal. Do you doubt that I am a non-interventionist conservative? You do realize that some of the people who write for this website are non-interventionist also, don't you? Is Doug Bandow a troll?
Dan Phillips| 9.25.09 @ 11:15PM
I am not sure I agree with the interpretation that treaties become equal to the Constitution. That is not the only way to interpret that passage and there is a debate among originalists as to what exactly that passage was intended to mean.

I think it's not just the right, but a lot of the center that actually doesn't equate the US with Bangladesh or Seirra Leone that is getting really tired of this act.
He really does take Whitney Houston to heart though with the whole loving yourself is the greatest love of all. He sure has a lot of that.

I'm gonna go get the papers, get the papers.

Another dud from the Conservative [sic] Action Project. They need to stick to economics and social issues because they have served up two lame Memos on foreign policy. They are clearly stuck in Cold War interventionist police the world mode. Notice, however, that Richard Viguerie didn't sign this one. I wonder if he caught flack for signing the last one. Also, note that the President of the Free Congress Foundation signed it. This is very unfortunate. The late Paul Weyrich was already fully in the non-interventionist camp when he passed, and he would not have signed this nonsense.
Here is my take on the last Memo.

It's about time someone spoke up for our country. We have a president who hates his own country -- is attracted to all of the despots in the world. Do you think he wants to join their club? Just asking.
Malaise (Jimmy Carter-style) and "change you can believe in" (Hugo Chavez-style)...oh, what a great future our country has to look forward to. Thanks, Mr. President.
