PoMoCon Beck

Here's something to consider alongside today's lead story. Nate Silver looks through some numbers and determines that Glenn Beck is not your average conservative rabblerouser like Rush Limbaugh. He isn't hated by everyone on the left. Instead, he appeals to anti-establishment types, and is more or less disregarded otherwise.

In other words, Silver concludes, Beck is a postmodern conservative. I guess then he'd fit right in with these guys.

"Beck is a postmodern conservative"

I think it would be more accurate to say that, as of right now, he is leaning in that direction. It could be that tomorrow he returns to spouting standard neoconservative rhetoric. Or it could be that we are watching a true transformation, and that he is morphing from a Fox News Right neocon imperialist into a populist conservative (small-r) republican before your eyes.

Who the hell knows with this guy.

SL,
Or he is a paleo, neo-Kantian post-Goldwater social libertarian cum Straussian post Reagan liberal.

Good point.

I think that gets Beck just about right. I don't watch him much, but I do think he's done good work pushing some issues that have not been covered by the MSM. He's wrong on a whole lot of issues in my opinion, and his "mad as hell and I'm not going to take it schtick" wears pretty thin, but it's hard to argue with his success.

…are destined to fail, and attempts to demonize him as some sort of standard Republican bogeyman will inevitably be so over-simplified as to be false.  Such efforts assume far more coherence than he possesses.
